      Book Description

Gerald M. Weinberg, James Bach, Naomi Karten, and a group of successful software consultants present powerful ideas on how software engineers and managers can amplify their professional effectiveness -- as individuals, as members of teams, and as members of organizations.

The collected essays address diverse topics in personal empowerment, interpersonal interaction, mastering projects, and changing the organization. Contributors include James Bach, Marie Benesh, Rick Brenner, Esther Derby, Kevin Fjelsted, Don Gray, Naomi Karten, Bob King, Pat Medvick, Brian Pioreck, Ken Roberts, Sharon Marsh Roberts, Johanna Rothman, Steve Smith, Eileen Strider, Gerald M. Weinberg, and Becky Winant.

The idea for this collection arose out of a brainstorming session for the Amplifying Your Effectiveness Conference (AYE), which debuted on November 6-8, 2000, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Like the book, the annual conference is designed to help technical people become more effective individually, within a team, and within an organization. The contributing authors served as hosts of the inaugural AYE Conference. The variety of techniques and perspectives represented in the book will help you amplify your effectiveness -- whether or not you are able to attend the live event.

3 out of 5 stars Articles on people oriented issues in Software development.......2004-07-19

This slim text (146 pages) is a collection of 19 brief articles concerned with the people aspects of software development.

The essays are divided into 4 parts with common themes.
      1. Empowering the individual
      2. Improving Interpersonal Interactions
      3. Mastering Projects
      4. Changing the Organization.

There are 17 different contributors -- mostly consultants, whose names are familiar from magazine contributions and software conferences. Their views are diverse and the writing is uneven.
I've always appreciated James Bach's writings which questioned conventional thinking on software testing and software QA. I also found Becky Winant's essay on "Maneuvers to Disable a Team" humorous.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for your project-management shelf........2000-10-31

In the preface, the editor explains that this collection of essays arose from a "brainstorming session for a conference of the same name." As you'd expect with over a dozen authors, the results are uneven. If you're involved in software development, the following chapters will justify your purchase of the book:

      - Don Gray: "Solving Other People's Problems"

      - S.M. & K. Roberts: "Do I want to Take This Crunch Project?"

      - Gerald Weinberg: "Congruent Interviewing by Audition"

      - Johanna Rothman: "It's Just the First Slip"

Although the critical reader may find some other sections offering commonplace or occasional misguided advice, the whole book is stimulating and easy to read in one sitting. Recommended for your project-management shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Effective ways to effectively be more effective.......2000-10-29

Since it is not possible to extend the length of the day, the only hope to improve your efficiency is to improve what you do with this most limited of resources. Working extended overtime has proven to be a short term solution only, as with few exceptions extended overtime leads to a general drop in productivity. The only situation where extended overtime does not appear to be a self-defeating condition is when the work is challenging enough so that it becomes a legitimate combination of livelihood, hobby and recreation. Tall order indeed!
However, the situation is not impossible if you simply take the time to explore the ways in which you can save time. The first and foremost way is to reduce the number of simultaneous projects. Study after study has demonstrated that the term momentary distraction is a gross misnomer. Any interruption takes us off task for at least ten minutes and the best essay in this book describes the plight of a man named Sam. Overseeing several projects that would each individually take only a few weeks, the constant switching created a near deadlock state in his managerial life. The simple solution is to declare one the highest priority and concentrate on it alone until it was complete. Repeating this simple process removed the deadlock and all projects were completed in a short time.
The simplest way that work can be made fun is to make the surrounding interpersonal interactions pleasant. The most interesting work in the world will not make a job fun if the interpersonal atmosphere is poisonous. This involves both selecting the right people as well as helping them enjoy each other through the emotional ups and downs of the long haul of building a major project. In my experience conducting technical interviews, the advice here of having candidates audition is the right way to select the people you want. If someone cannot handle the auditioning of their supposed skills, then it is difficult to see how they can survive the pressure of working closely and intensely with others for months at a time. The second and by far the most difficult is how to walk the fine line of allowing for individual differences without letting the differences become too individual. The advice here is good, but one could write volumes on how to practice this critical art.
As a group, IT workers commonly work 50-60 hour weeks filled with "crisis" after "crisis." The only hope to break this destructive cycle is to either cut the hours or make them more fun, and there is sound advice in this book that will help you do both.

      Book Description

Aah, romance…synonymous with the South and especially Louisiana, Chef Folse's sixth cookbook introduces readers to another romantic element of our state—the bed and breakfast homes. Readers are taken on a tasty rendezvous through 26 of Louisiana's premier bed and breakfasts. Two of the most important elements in life—food and romance—come together as the central theme. Perhaps the unique feature of this book is that it is as much a romance novel as it is a cookbook. The 308-page book features almost 200 recipes only found at Louisiana bed and breakfasts. It is an anthology on the origin of breakfast as an event in New Orleans.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cookbook.......2007-03-10

I have long wanted to write a review of this book and I am finally doing so. I just want to say that this is the most beautiful cookbook I have ever seen! The photos are wonderful and the recipes and the format are great. I love the way John Folse visited each bed and breakfast finding special recipes. It is a joy to own this book and I cannot praise the lovely people enough for the hard work and love that I can tell went into this cookbook. Thank you for it!!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificant recipes, Fantastic photos, Wonderful reading.......2000-03-01

I recieved this book for Christmas 1999 and fell in love with it and the chef! The quality of the book is GREAT and the recipes are easy to prepare with no unusual ingredients found in most books. Although I live in New England, I love to experiment with different cooking styles and this book walks me through it with ease and flavor. It has become my favorite gift for friends...especially those who love to cook!

      5 out of 5 stars A great cookbook, a wonderful gift.......2000-02-07

This is a cookbook that's too pretty to keep in the kitchen! The recipes are fantastic and really capture the flavor of Louisiana cooking, but the pictures capture the soul of Louisiana. I can almost hear John Folse's Donaldsonville accent as I read the recipes and the descriptions of Louisiana's bed and breakfasts.

Some recipes are simply down-home and delicious like Frog in a Hole. Others are more elaborate like the Giant Mushrooms stuffed with Crawfish and Tasso. All of it is Cajun cuisine from a native Louisianian's perspective--a refreshing change from hearing how those from the frozen nawth cook Cajun. Folse even tells his readers how to cook a Cajun roux!

I received this book as a gift, and I liked it so much that I am buying a copies as gifts.

                  Book Description

Bruce Ackerman and James Fishkin argue that Americans can revitalize their democracy and break the cycle of cynical media manipulation that is crippling public life. They propose a new national holiday—Deliberation Day—for each presidential election year. On this day people throughout the country will meet in public spaces and engage in structured debates about issues that divide the candidates in the upcoming presidential election.
Deliberation Day is a bold new proposal, but it builds on a host of smaller experiments. Over the past decade, Fishkin has initiated Deliberative Polling events in the United States and elsewhere that bring random and representative samples of voters together for discussion of key political issues. In these events, participants greatly increase their understanding of the issues and often change their minds on the best course of action.
Deliberation Day is not merely a novel idea but a feasible reform. Ackerman and Fishkin consider the economic, organizational, and political questions raised by their proposal and explore its relationship to the larger ideals of liberal democracy.

5 out of 5 stars AN ANTIDOTE TO SPIN.......2004-10-21

Full disclosure: I just started a non-profit with the authors to educate people about ideas like Deliberation Day. Our website is at www.CitSov.org. Here's why I joined the effort.

At the height of the Cold War, a majority of Americans could not correctly answer whether the Soviet Union was in NATO. It was not.

Prior to war with Iraq in 2003, half the public thought that Iraqis were among the 9/11 hijackers. There were no Iraqis.

When British citizens were polled recently on whether the nation's constitution is written or unwritten, a quarter answered correctly, a quarter incorrectly, and one-half confessed ignorance. The British "constitution" is unwritten.

Six decades of modern public opinion research establishes the general public's unawareness of important factual background to major civic and political debates. That's not snobbery. That's fact, and it's completely understandable. Time spent on public affairs competes with the need for information on more personal matters, such as price and quality of a home or car, in which ignorance can have a direct cost.

In contrast, no voter perceives a consequence for voting offhandedly. The outcome of a major election never hinges on a single ballot.

Today's political techniques exacerbate the problem of offhanded voting. The science of focus group and public opinion research enables political professionals to identify and exploit the power of different images and slogans, rather than listen to and address the voters' priority concerns. Candidates' time and campaign funds are devoted to efforts to take advantage of preconceptions, not on efforts to inform or engage.

The result is that the issues of greatest public interest, such as homeland security, education, health care, and social security, are treated by our politicians as topics for sound bite and image-making manipulation, rather than as priorities for debate and resolution.

Deliberation Day adapts an antiquated civic institution, President's Day, to provide voters the opportunity and motivation to make informed citizenship a larger part of their busy lives. By engaging every citizen better, Deliberation Day will transform the quantity and quality of information that is grist for public opinion. In a democracy, public opinion is king. The candidates, the media and political professionals all will adjust to its new demands.

Read Deliberation Day. Take a look at www.CitSov.org. Get involved in making it possible for everyone to participate thoughtfully in American politics.

1 out of 5 stars Listen Up You Silly Unwashed Masses.......2004-03-21

You stupid regular people! How dare you not be as involved as Bruce Ackerman thinks you should be? That's the basic tone of this book, as Yale elites come up with a far-fetched plan to pay silly Americans to be involved in the political process. For anyone familiar with the Iowa Caucuses, this is what the book is advocating for all Americans every presidential election year. What's more, it advocates it in a snobish tone throughout, the authors barely concealing their contempt for people who are too busy earning a living, raising their kids, and doing the hundreds of other things required of regular people to spend time having oxford style debates about public policy issues. Deliberation Day would be the name of a two-day national holiday (everyone gets one of the two days) scheduled two weeks prior to a presidential election. Anyone who uses their day off to attend a full-day session discussing the issues in the election will be paid $150.

Fishkin has conducted extensive deliberative polling -- sessions in which large groups representative of a society discuss a political issue in depth. He's found that positions shift dramatically, though not necessarily in a predictable direction, as a result of these sessions, that these shifts are the result of increased knowledge, and that participants' new positions have staying power.

Ackerman and Fishkin argue that Deliberation Day would better inform and involve a woefully ignorant public, in part through the effects it would have on candidates, the media, activists, and political parties. Testing a sound bite with a focus group would not predict its usefulness in winning over a public that would be deliberating the issue. Politicians would be obliged to develop positions that could withstand examination and substantive debate.

Deliberation Day activities would begin with a live televised debate between candidates answering questions from participants in an advance deliberation session. Written materials would also be provided by the candidates. Deliberators would discuss the issues in groups of 15 and take questions to plenaries of 500 at which local representatives of each campaign would respond to questions. Back in their smaller groups, deliberators would discuss their concerns further.

When I first heard of this idea, I loved it until I found out a televised debate would be involved. Anyone who watched the Democratic primary debates this season knows how few topics are raised, how little substance is produced, and how biased the affairs are toward the candidates the media prefers. I raised this concern with Ackerman, and he replied that his principal concern was that relying exclusively on written presentations would overly depress turnout.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but after reading this book I do agree with including the televised debate, provided it is not conducted by a media corporation with an interest in ratings and in the needs of major corporations, and provided it will - as the authors describe -- involve questions developed through the thoughtful dialogue of a large and representative group of citizens. In fact, televising such a debate would be a significant experiment in and of itself, which if properly promoted and made available would likely accomplish a good bit of what Deliberation Day is intended to do.

The design of Deliberation Day is well conceived by the authors and spelled out clearly in 219 pages of detail, including cost and logistics. I'm completely sold, but I have a few concerns.

First, how will the campaigns ensure that they have informed representatives in every location who can answer questions? In the recent primaries, I represented one of the Democratic candidates in debates in which some of the candidates were represented by volunteers or staff who repeatedly had to say "I'm sorry, I don't know where he stands on that." This was the case even in a debate in which the questions had been provided a week ahead of time. For Deliberation Day to work, the campaigns will have to take it seriously enough in its first run-through to organize a small army of better informed supporters.

Second, isn't the real issue the nominating processes, not the choice between the two nominees? What will happen if we all become informed and discover that there isn't much difference between the two candidates, and they're both ignoring some of our concerns? Will this force them to compete to meet our needs? Will Deliberation Day lead primary voters to look for different strengths in candidates than they do now? Or will a full frustrating day of deliberation confirm many people's current belief that there's no point in getting involved (except maybe for the $150)? After all, people already support many positions that I find admirable and well-informed but that we can't get our government to enact to save our lives.

Third, what about third and fourth parties? Ackerman and Fishkin largely avoid the topic and otherwise suggest that they would restrict candidates' involvement based proportionately on their parties' success in the previous election. But some discussion is in order here. If Deliberation Day can be expected to change many people's minds, is it not conceivable that they could make a third party actually viable? Or is it more likely that this exercise in civic participation will force one or more of the two major parties to address the concerns that have led to the development of other parties? I don't know, but I find the authors' avoidance of the topic uncharacteristically shortsighted.

Fourth, what makes this - any more than, say, media reform or campaign finance reform - something we can create in the absence of already having it in place? The source of hope for egalitarian ideas these days seems to be starting locally and working up to the state and national levels. Ackerman and Fishkin argue, however, that Deliberation Day must start with presidential campaigns, because the greatest number of people vote in those already. They are convinced that a less than stellar debut for Deliberation Day would put an end to the project. It's an excellent point, but not one I find a source for optimism. Getting this into John Kerry's platform would persuade me.

That may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. While Kerry avoids many issues on which he attempts a delicate balance intended to please all of the people all of the time, he also takes positions on complex issues that would benefit from discussion longer than 10 seconds. A presidential challenger ought to commit to putting Deliberation Day in place for his reelection attempt. Perhaps Kerry is the one to do it.

1 out of 5 stars For All You Who Are Not Working For a Living ..........2004-03-09

For all you who are not working for a living, but have time to sit around the ivory tower, thinking up blue sky ideas that will only be read and commented upon by other self-involved political scientists, here is the book for you. The authors propose an impractical, completely ridiculous national holiday, where citizens will get paid to attend forums, debate public policy, and vote. This is the type of patronizing claptrap that is so irritatingly espoused by people like tenured university professors and limousine liberals such as Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich -- people who are entirely insulated from the negative impacts of a George Bush presidency and can doodle around with ideas about the public good, deliberative democracy and the notion of the city state. Meanwhile, you and I are struggling to not get outsourced and keep the Visa bill paid. Uh, sorry, professor, I can't come to the "Be-in," I'm busy earning a living. The book's tone is irritating and patronzing, as Professors 1 & 2 pose a scheme to bribe us ignorant unwashed massses into joining their "informed democracy." I imagine that they are wholey ignorat of the fact that a lot of poeple tuned out of politics a long time ago because the choices are too often limited to people like Mr. Bush who want to give all the money to corporations, and people like this author, who want to spend hard earned tax dollars on NSF grants to do probit models and qualitative analysis of whatever nonsensical political science theory that springs into their head. Hey, guys? Politics is about people's real lives, their money, their security, their environment and their families. It's not real complicated. When candidates realize that, people will come out and vote. Until then, most choose to stay home as a form of protest, or because they realize its got little to do with them. Deliberation Day? We deliberated: Take a pass on this book.

                          Book Description

Just Good Politics is the autobiography of Raymond Chafin, the savvy, free-wheeling political "boss" from Logan County, West Virginia, who managed political machinery for the elections of several state governors, U. S. senators, and, in 1960, for John F. Kennedy. It also provides a genuine bridge between our increasingly homgenized American society and a largely unexamined part of rural mountain life.

                          Book Description

It's easy enough to tell ourselves "Don't sweat the small stuff," but let's get real-it's not all "small stuff."Sometimes we have to face tough decisions. Should we move to a different city? Get a divorce? Change religions? Terminate life support? Quit our jobs? Have children? Get Off the Fence! covers all of these life-transforming decisions, and much more. This is not an ivory tower textbook on decision theory-it's a step-by-step handbook for guiding people through the process of making difficult choices. Mother/son authors Rhoda and Jeffrey Makoff bring years of personal and professional experience to the table-they have made hundreds of "big decisions'in their successful careers and counseled thousands of people through difficult choices. The Makoffs present ten steps to effective decision-making, but they also recognize another essential component-the role of emotional issues in making the best decision possible. This crucial eleventh step is where the "gut," "heart" or intuition comes in. Get Off the Fence! also includes fascinating stories about people who have made major life decisions. Get Off the Fence! will help people take control of complex situations instead of feeling helpless and paralyzed by indecision. It will prevent them from making poor decisions that create a lifetime of regrets and self-recrimination.

I was thinking about investing in this Wireless ISP in Lawrence Kanasas, and WOW! this book made all the difference.

Since I have invested the company's value has more than doubled and we are looking forward to spectacular future growth.

Thanks Amazon, for helping me to make that big decision.

Living Your Life! The energy wasted by most of us while wrestling with a big decision and the valuable time lost, are troubling conditions addressed by the terrific ideas in this book. I particularly liked the authors giving hearty approval to the simple solutions of reviewing a decision with someone you trust, and writing pros and cons and priorities out on paper. This may seem obvious to those who readily open up to others or who automatically grab a pencil to write out options, but for those for whom these actions are unusual this book provides direction, encouragement and comfort.

4 out of 5 stars Premise: Difficult Choices Define Your Life.......2004-01-23

I appreciate that statement made very early in this book: "Difficult choices define your life." It is in the opening chapter of the book which contextualizes the 10 + 1 Steps.

I also found value in a distinction the Makoff's make about a "decoy decision" which is not the "big" decision (or the Big Duck) instead it just LOOKS like the Big Duck. It is an energy sapper, it misses the core issue... and it can appear genuine.

This distinction could have been fleshed out: perhaps there is room for another book in the series.

I also found a lot of benefit in the simplicity of the process itself coupled with the real-life examples. What was missing for me, however, was examples from outside the personal realm.

I was hoping for some choices which were in the area of big career changes, making professional choices, making choices about ending or finalizing a partnership or quitting a job, etc.

Overall, great for Decision Making 101 which made me hungry for Decision Making 102.

The decision making steps in Get Off the Fence! are straight forward and the authors have serious real-world credentials. I learned a lot about myself (and other people) from this book. I highly recommend it.
