Wisdom is Vindicated by Her Works.......2007-03-22
This is a wonderful collection of quotations and thoughts. I can certainly vouch for the author. Diamond Capsules is an excellent introduction to the great teachings Arnold Zegarelli has given to help so many.
This makes a great table book to share. The thoughts are non-denominational, universal and ever-lasting. A truly inspirational gift to anyone, at any time. You will treasure it.

Alfred Portale is one of our foremost chefs. His cooking at Manhattan's Gotham Bar and Grill is widely acclaimed for its refined yet down-to-earth deliciousness. "When it comes to cooking," Portale says, "there are 12 seasons," a truth his 12 Seasons Cookbook explores in bountiful detail. Reflecting that each month embodies its own seasonal and psychological moment, and therefore makes its own demands in the kitchen, he presents more than 100 recipes matched to the culinary calendar. Though many of these require a cooking workout, a sufficient number are simple enough for most cooks to try when the mood strikes.
Portale characterizes the months. November means Thanksgiving and December Christmas, and for these he provides recipes like Pumpkin and Sweet Garlic Custards and Lamb Chops and Truffled Mashed Potatoes. The depths of February require a little "culinary sunshine" in the form of Lemon Risotto with Spot Prawns, among other dishes, while May is "the big bang of the culinary year," a rebirth celebrated with dishes including Grilled Soft-Shell Crabs with Asparagus, New Potatoes, and a Lemon-Caper Vinaigrette. July is "birthdays and barbecues"--Montauk Chowder salutes this height of summer--while September signals a return to school and work, demanding "recipes for busy times" such as Orichette with Chicken, Swiss Chard, and Reggiano Parmigiano. A wide range of dessert recipes, such as Coconut Panna Cotta, are also included. Throughout, Portale offers "flavor building" ideas for dressing up recipes, "thinking ahead" notes for staggering preparation, and dish variation suggestions. With 150 illustrations, thematic menus, what-to-drink advice, and a section on basics like stocks, the book presents a culinary calendar that works for year-round dining enjoyment. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
"When it comes to cooking, there are twelve seasons," says Alfred Portale, the world-renowned chef of the Gotham Bar and Grill restaurant. To him, each month is a season unto itself--not just because crucial ingredients peak at different points during the traditional four seasons, but also because each month carries with it a unique set of emotions and associations.
Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook takes the home cook on a deeply personal journey through the year in food. Many chapters are ingredient-driven, such as May, which Portale dubs "The Big Bang of the Culinary Year," because of the proliferation of vegetables such as fava beans, asparagus, and morel mushrooms. August, entitled "Seize the Day," presents recipes that lend themselves to late-summer entertaining. "November--Giving Thanks" is devoted entirely to Portale's interpretations of Thanksgiving standards while "December--Celebrations" shares elegant holiday dishes as well as a selection of canapés and food to give as gifts. Portale also offers his unique approach to months like September in which he responds to the post-Labor Day return to work and school with "Recipes for Busy Times."
As in his award-winning Alfred Portale's Gotham Bar and Grill Cookbook, Portale provides instructions for planning ahead and for how to vary or expand recipes to accommodate ingredient availability and seasonality. He also includes essays on favorite foods and techniques, tips on preserving, advice on what to drink, and suggestions for thematic menus. Brought to breathtaking life with more than one hundred full-color photographs, Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook captures the glory and possibility of every month of the year.

Ok.......2002-03-16
This cookbook is not as good as I expected to be, but does offer some decent recipes & good ideas for what best accompanies certain main dishes. The majority of the recipes are easy enough to do.
Great Visuals and Inspiration, lacks Proper Detail.......2001-10-19
This is a fantastic book written by a fantastic chef. The physical quality of the book is terrific as is the layout of the pages. Especially striking are the pictures that accompany every recipe (Portale is known for creating some of the most stunning visuals in culinary, and all the recipes are captured splendidly). However, although he explains why he chooses a particular recipe for each of the "12 seasons", he does not go into any detail concerning the ingredients used. I was hoping for more of a "where and why" for the ingredients that make up each recipe. I will have to complement this book with another that details the peak seasons for ingredients that make up the recipes as well as how to select the best of them.
Don't be afraid - dive in and mess up every pan you own........2001-08-09
I received this book as a gift from my mom for Christmas 2000...the timeline goes something like this: Voraciously read every recipe and narrative, groaning in ecstacy at the photos for the first 2 months. Displayed on cocktail table for guests to do the same for 2 months. Finally overcame intimidation and tried the recipes in 5th month! Dinner guests, who previously ooh-ed and ahh-ed over my cooking were stunned by the new circle of culinary bliss I had acheived. The recipes may be a bit initimidating, like you could possibly find baby turnips at the local supermarket to go with seared duck and roasted peaches (a winner - I subbed cubed, peeled turnips to good effect), but are well worth the effort. Honestly, invite guests who will be so grateful for the plates you set before them that they will jump up and volunteer to help clean up the kitchen later! Every recipe is worth the challenge and the mess... and its a good excuse to add new items to your kitchen equipment collection. If you don't cook, buy this book as a gift for your most kitchen-accomplished friend and ingratiate yourself in hopes of an invitation.
Mouth-watering recipes suitable for all occasions.......2001-02-16
Alfred Portale is the world-renowned chef of the Gotham Bar and Grill who draws upon his many years of experience and expertise to present a remarkable, impressive, extensive collection of mouth-watering recipes suitable for all occasions, from simple family dining to special event celebrations. From Grilled Lobster with Grilled Corn, Potatoes, and Roast Garlic-Tarragon Butter, Grilled Tenderloin of Beef with Corn, Chanterelles and Chervil, and Pumpkin and Sweet Garlic Custards to Squab Roasted with Potatoes, Pancetta, and Sage, Roast Cod with Savoy Cabbage, White Beans, and Black Truffle, and Duck Confit with Frisse, Green Lentils, Beets, and Roquefort, Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook has palate pleasing cuisines for all seasons and segments of the calendar.
Portale is a FOOD GOD!.......2000-12-07
Having had enormous success with Alfred Portale's previous book-"The Gotham Bar and Grill cookbook", I couldn't wait to buy this one. 12 Seasons goes into detail about ingredients that are "in season" for each of the 12 months throughtout the year. Its as if every month is a "season" - what a delightful concept!! This book brings out the artestry in food and makes you appreciate it's beauty and flavour. The recipes in this book are easy to follow and the final outcomes have all been impressive. I have been using both of Alfred Portales books as guides and educational tools in my quest to be a greater cook - and they have helped me tremdously. I have learned so much. Unlike other famous chef's cookbooks that I have purchased - Mr. Portale seems to have taken a concerted effort to "teach" his readers. He helps you to realize the beauty in cooking. That's what makes him a food god.

Book Description
President Reagan called Afghanistan's mujahedeen the moral equivalent of our founding fathers. Thirteen years later, they were on America's hit list. This thoughtful primer examines the role of politics in America's foreign policy.
Customer Reviews:
A "must have" for every American.......2006-10-02
Take a look at the cover photo of this book, and the inside content becomes apparent. You can see people, who are now branded as terrorists, were, at one time, chief guests in the White House.
This book carries some of Eqbal Ahmad's writings and transcripts of lectures on various international conflicts including US-Afghanistan and India-Pakistan. This book does a good job of exposing US Govt's hypocrisy and its unilateral goal of furthering only its own interests at the expense of everything and everyone in this world. It also tells you why and how the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts erupted, and why they have only worsened ever since they began. There's a brief discussion on the Kashmir issue as well. I wish it carried more details. Overall, this book presents to its readers a brief but accurate insight into the most prominent present day international conflicts.
Do not think that if you are not interested in international politics, you may find this book boring. Due to its concise nature, this book is very much readable and comprehensible to all. I say it is a "must-have" for every American, because it will tell them what their politicians haven't. US is the only country that, since its birth, has been at war every single day of the year at some place on this earth. It is mind-boggling to imagine what kind of wealth its people would have amassed if the same trillions of dollars that have been cumulatively spent on mindless killing of people and building nuclear weapons that will never be used, had been just distributed in cash to its citizens. It is no wonder that Eqbal Ahmad's words carried a great deal of truth. Why else would the CIA send its operatives to his house at night to threaten him if he didn't shut up? Eqbal was however up to the challenge, and told them to pack-off immediately since he was acting only in accordance with the US constitution, which says - "No taxation without representation". He said that since his views were not represented by the policies of the US Govt even though he paid taxes, he had every right to protest.
That was Mr Eqbal Ahmad, a foremost authority on international conflicts, alongside, I would say, Noam Chomsky. Do not miss this book. It is worth a thousand times its cover price. After reading this book, I can assure, you will be only egged on to read his other detailed books.
Good things come in small packages.......2005-09-17
Now, if this only came with crayons and pictures to color in, it might attract the attention of those who really need a crash course in terrorism. To the point, devine intervention happens to other people, but the self-righteousness of powerful America is what makes it so hypocritical. Unfortunately, I expect this primer to be as relevant for decades to come, so let's hope it doesn't go out of print.
Too Brief But Densely Packed With Ideas.......2005-04-04
Wonderful prescient, but all too brief. Serves as a good introduction to the ideas of the dear departed Ahmad who would be a valuable contributor to the worldwide debate on what exactly consititutes terrorism. The way he shows that the term "terrorism" is construed to eliminate any links to state-sponsored violence and torture demands our attention and respect. This is a courageous and intelligent book.
Required reading for people who want real freedom.......2005-03-02
This book affirms that American foreign allies are classified on whether their own goals converge or diverge from our own.
During the 1970's and 1980's we had partnered with Saddam, deciding that he was a 'brutal dictator' only when his objectives no longer echoed American public policy priorities.
Similarly, the people whom the State department now identifies as being 'dangerous' were at one point benign or even considered beneficial---because they had then supported our world view. It is critical and sobering to wonder who is organizing outside of today's policymaker scrutiny.
Regardless of the administration, such relationships of convenience are THE rule in international relations. America talks a good deal about wanting to respect human rights, but the real world often facilitates less stringency.
A look at the background behind terrorism.......2004-08-04
From the perspective of someone from South Asia (Ahamd was from Pakistan), this book looks deeper at this thing called terrorism.
There are several aspects to the official approach to terrorism. First, terrorists change. Yesterday's terrorist is today's freedom fighter, and vice versa. Second, there seems to be no such thing as an "official" definition of terrorism. Explanations are designed to arouse our emotions, instead of stimulating our intelligence. Third, government officials may not be able to define terrorism, but they know that it must be stamped out worldwide.
Fourth, it's supposedly possible to tell the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter. Fifth, the official approach ignores the causes of terrorism. Cause? What cause? Sixth, the moral revulsion against terrorism needs to be selective. Terror from disapproved groups needs to be strongly condemned, but terror from allies or approved groups can be ignored.
Why do groups commit terrorist acts? Getting their grievances heard through regular channels hasn't worked, so, to them, terrorism is the only way to be heard. Terrorism is an expression of anger and helplessness, and also a sense of betrayal. Through the spread of modern technology and communications, terror has become globalized. Everyone is a target.
The author recommends several approaches for America. Stop with the double standards. Don't condone some terrorism, and condemn others. In the present situation, such an approach will not work. Also, America should actually consider the causes of terrorism. It's a political problem; seek a political solution. The author also recommends reinforcing the framework of international law. Try going through the International Court of Justice.
This is an excellent book. It's short, and written from a non-American perspective. It does a fine job looking at the background behind terrorism, and it's well worth reading.

Presents the intriguing biographies of twelve exceptional women who made an impact not just on their home state, but on the nation and the world.
Customer Reviews:
Little-known women celebrated.......2002-03-17
A wonderful, easy to read yet informative introduction to some women I knew little about. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Women Who Break the Rules Unite!.......2002-01-21
It is refreshing to see this book, with its women of various backgrounds and cultures showing the determination to live their lives by the rules they choose, instead of what their individual societies forced upon them at differing times in our history. From the earliest record in what was New Amsterdam, to more recent times, I enjoyed at times a thrilling view of some women of New York I had not heard of but whose nerve and determination helped put women in the position we now enjoy in America, and New York in particular. Women who, in the face of rejection of their communties or downright danger still said "My way or the highway!" This book takes them from their obscurity and shows them as the courageous beings they were. Very inspirational!
Herstory,History and some great New Yorkers.......2002-01-14
Finally a well written, easy to read yet scholarly work about some fascinating New Yorkers, who just happen to be women.
Before television, before the internet, before the vote, the women in this book influence issues as diverse as the Catholic Worker Movement, the Whitney Museum, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The book brings alive their experience, and makes you a partner in their sucess.
A must read for anyone with an interest in hertory, history or New York.
Could have been much better..........2002-01-03
Featuring important but not necessarily well-known women, More Than Petticoats (New York) could have brought our attention to neglected parts of our history.
Unfortunately, the author gets bogged down in Catholicism. At least I _hope_ she is Catholic. What possible other reason could there be for featuring Kateri, the first Native American Catholic martyr? (Her claim to fame, BTW, was neglecting her health until she died for her religion.) The author goes on an on about Kateri's devotion to "The Blessed Mother," without explaining who that is. Whose Blessed Mother do you mean, when fewer than 40 percent of Americans are Catholic? And if you are NOT Catholic, how in the world does it advance women, in general, to be a martyr? Similar bias is shown toward Dorothy Day--who at least DID accomplish something, the Catholic Workers' movement. However, the author's adulation of Day, without bothering to point out the hypocrisy of a woman who had an abortion, dissolved a marriage, and had a child out of wedlock and then becoming a Catholic hero is just ridiculous. (She includes the information, but does not put forth an opinion--this, in a very chatty and opinionated book.) The author's hero-worship in view of this makes her other opinions suspect.
The author also gets some basic information wrong, such as the number of the amendment that guarantees a woman's right to vote. (19th, not 20th.)
Such a shame! A book on important New York women that gives us Sybil Ludington and Harriet Tubman but put together so shabbily!
Perhaps subsequent editions of this same book will be better.
Keep trying, Twodot Press!

Book Description
This title confidently puts forward a practical, new approach to decision making in an uncertain business world.
Many variables are accounted for and the authors are innovative in integrating previous types of decision-making approaches with a more fluid, and therefore realistic model that can be applied across a wide range of contexts and decisions.
A new title on a important topic that not only stands well on its own, but also complements Chapman and Ward's previous title Project Risk Management. This book is practical and rigorous yet written in an engaging way.
It is perfect for courses, or to be used by practitioners.
Download Description
"Rigorously grounded conceptually but developed to meet practical concerns, this book underpins and extends the scope and power of current approaches to the management of risk and uncertainty in projects and related operational and strategic management decision making. Ten tales, based on real cases, explore a range of project related problems, including: cost estimation, pricing competitive bids, risk allocation and incentive contract design, evaluation of threats and opportunities, buffer management in a supply chain, investment appraisal, portfolio management, and strategy formulation. Each tale provides practical guidance on achieving effective and efficient uncertainty management through simple analysis and discussion of emergent issues. Using a 'constructively simple' approach to model building and the associated decision support processes, the authors show the reader how to take the guesswork out of managing risk and uncertainty.

Product Description
In California, local sales tax revenues accrue to the jurisdiction in which the sale occurs. This gives cities an incentive to promote the location of retail businesses within their boundaries. Although sales taxes account for only a modest portion of total city revenues, cities regard them highly because they represent a major share of their discretionary income. This study focuses on two crucial questions related to cities' pursuit of these revenues. First, how does the sales tax affect land-use decisions? If cities are systematically favoring retail development over other types of growth, this may negatively affect overall economic development in the state. Second, which types of communities are doing better or worse in the quest for these revenues?
