Architects of the Business Revolution is a journey through the remarkable new territory of e-business and the new economy. Dearlove and Coomber identify the entrepreneurs, radicals and thinkers who have made the greatest contribution to this new world. From wunderkinds like Marc Andreessen and Sabheer Bhatia and rocket scientists like Tim Berners-Lee and Vinton Cerf to visionaries like Don Tapscott and Esther Dyson and business engineers like Scott McNealy and Jim Clark, these are the guys and girls you have to know about. Beyond the individuals themselves, Dearlove and Coomber take ideas into action and offer practical guidance drawn from these pioneers.

            4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-02-23

Authors Des Dearlove and Stephen Coomber present capsule biographies of 50 individuals who have played a major role in the spread of e-business. Besides providing some background on each person, these bios highlight their major contributions as individuals or through their companies. While many names and stories are familiar - Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates - others are less so, such as the developers of Google and Real Networks. The bios mix high-tech contributors, entrepreneurs and journalists covering the e-business revolution. Though the book has a brief introduction, it suffers from its alphabetical listing of the contributors, which presents the bios out of context. We at getAbstract.com say this book "coulda been a contender" if it grouped its bios in chronological order or by field, and offered introductions to local sections of that nature. Still, it's a useful encyclopedia of the selected individuals and a valuable e-resource.

The most famous house in the United States serves as both private home and public domain. Every year brings an assortment of international dignitaries, down-home performers, local civic events, and family meals. Encompassing both rich historic tradition and modern lifestyles, the White House is a national symbol of pride in our distinct culture. An Invitation to the White House brings together detailed history and recent events with style. Each page is covered with lush photographs; some are public displays of formal greetings and gift exchanges, while others are obviously personal family snapshots from the Clintons' collection. From Chelsea showing her young cousin the family Christmas tree to Bill and Hillary listening raptly to a speech by Stephen Hawking, you'll find shots showing every facet of life at the White House. Many photos are devoted to showing the house "behind the scenes," and they present us with details like flower arrangements, plate garnishings, and delicate calligraphy for the place cards at formal dinners.

The accompanying text by Hillary Rodham Clinton is written with a pleasing mixture of fine detail--"Mrs. Barak and I did not stay awake as late as our husbands did"--and general sociopolitical commentary such as "The unified stance solidified that weekend was yet another reminder of the importance of NATO's alliance." Food is an important part of this book, and many sample menus have been included in full. The last chapter is filled with delightful recipes from the White House chefs, and includes such treats as new potatoes with lobster and bacon, hot pumpkin soup, and mocha cake. Whether you're a history buff, a die-hard Democrat, or just a fan of vivid coffee-table books, An Invitation to the White House is the next best thing to an actual visit. --Jill Lightner

            Book Description

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton has worked to make the White House a distinctly American showcase -- from historically accurate renovations and acquisitions of important American art, to celebrations of jazz and gospel music and an expanded emphasis on American cuisine. The first family's home has also been distinguished by the diversity of Americans honored and welcomed there. In this lavishly illustrated book, the First Lady invites you into the best-known house in the country and celebrates the very best of American history, arts, and culture.

An Invitation to the White House shows how the White House figures prominently in the cultural and political life of the country, as well as in the life of the first family. You'll have a front-row seat at the full range of White House occasions, from an elegant and historic State Dinner for the Emperor and Empress of Japan to the annual Easter Egg Roll, from a performance by Lou Reed to a private recital for President Clinton by a saxophone quartet. You'll follow a State Visit -- from the planning of the seating arrangements to the arrival ceremonies to the dancing after dinner -- and meet the dedicated staff who work behind the scenes to make it all possible. This is a White House you won't see on any public tour: As historian Carl Anthony writes in his introduction, "This book makes the rooms come alive -- one can almost taste the food and hear the music."

With more than 350 color and black-and-white photographs, menus and invitations from State Dinners and other events, and more than fifty recipes used in the White House kitchens, here is a glimpse of the day-to-day life behind the historic events that take place in the people's house.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary First Lady.......2007-01-13

I have a collection of Congressional Cookbooks and "White House" Cookbooks and such by former White House Chef's. Hillary's is beyond the traditional "family cookbook" but gives a white house glimpse and is much more than the tradition, which of course is Hillary!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but NOT a cookbook.......2005-05-12

Beautiful illustrations of the White House, there's no doubt about that. But if your looking for fancy recipes, this is not the book. Few recipes in it, I was expecting more of that, so I was a little disappointed. I thought I was going to have a book with lots of recipes, for special ocassions; I wanted to invite some friends and tell them, look this dish was served in the White House.
Not a bad book, just not what I was looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great.......2003-12-09

I bought my copy cheap from one of Amazon's excellent network sources. I consider myself pretty neutral on Bill and Hillary, but this truly is a shameless advertisement for the two. I was expecting more on the house itself, but basically this is a photo journey through the happier social moments during the Clinton presidency. For this, I still consider the book documenting the Ford presidency to be far better, certainly more candid, and a better artistic statement. The most interesting part of this book for me was the documentation of the planning for a state visit. The recipes at the end of the book weren't very interesting. Certainly, anyone curious about the internal workings of the House itself will be disappointed; JB West's "Inside the White House" is far better. I'm unsure where this book should rest in anyone's library. It could easily be considered fuel for the Clinton spin on their own celebrity. I'm glad I paid only a few bucks for it as I'll have no problem getting rid of it. Recommend looking elsewhere; the Natl. Geographic video on the White House is done much better.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Photos (Except for the Cover).......2003-05-12

This book has some delightful photographs of various White House rooms, furniture, and memorabilia. The text is fairly limited and the photos of the author are (thankfully) kept to a minimum. Overall this is a very enjoyable book and one I can recommend to anyone interested in the White House. As for the invitation, I wonder if the Girl in the Blue Dress received one of these...

5 out of 5 stars History comes alive in the Peoples' House.......2003-04-20

I actually purchased this book in Washington, D.C., while there for a conference. One of the great First Ladies of the twentieth century provides fascinating glimpses into the most important Home in history, while entertaining the reader with bold and whimsical insights into its many and varied occupants. Did you know that a 145 year-old, crumbling White House was completely gutted by President Harry Truman, with every scrap of detail preserved to be replaced as it was when John and Abigail Adams first occupied it? Such are the fascinating details of history the reader is provided while experiencing the most intimate, day-to-day functions of a house that is both a living, personal family residence while functioning seamlessly as the epicenter of the free world.

I love the White House. Its history, its beauty, its timeless architecture, and its symbol as the center of democracy to a world hungry for freedom. Long may this home be occupied by men and women of good will who seek to serve the wishes of a free people.

Governments and policy-makers are increasingly aware that access to knowledge enables better policy-making practice. The policy-makers of the various Member States are also more and more aware that they face common challenges and can learn useful lessons from across national boundaries that shed light on their own specific national situation. The challenge for the Regional Office is to build on the existing data and experience, to facilitate the sharing of this experience and, ultimately, to make those data and indicators practically comparable across the countries.

The European health report responds to the statutory requirement to provide the Member States with essential public health information. It provides a broad but concise picture of the health status and health determinants in the Region, and identifies areas for public health action for the Member States and the European public health community. The report focuses on concrete evidence useful for decision-makers in public health. Its role is to summarize and feed back to Member States the information created, deposited and "accredited" during the Regional Office's work with Member States on key topics and issues in public health in Europe, in the context of the values and principles of WHO as "one Organization".

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic how-to for beginners and experts alike.......2001-08-24

Mastandrea's sharp eye for color is matched by her ability to articulate in step-by-step format the techniques for beautiful ceramic pieces. Techniques include how to do sponge painting, plaids, stamp painting, which brushes to use for which effects--enough information for someone who's never painted ceramics before but not so much that an experienced painter might find condescending. The projects included in the book are cheery, bright, and motivational. I highly recommend this book for any painter who has recently discovered paint-your-own ceramics studios but doesn't know where or how to start.

Unless you're actually from Illinois, chances are you remember "the other Paul Simon" as the 1988 Democratic presidential candidate who achieved more recognition for his bow ties than for his political platform. But the former senator has always been a prolific author--in fact, before he was ever elected to office, he was a rather successful muckraking journalist. In P.S., he reflects upon a career in public service that has included stints in the Illinois state legislature, a turn as lieutenant governor, and positions in both houses of Congress. The insider's view he presents is never quite candid (Simon demonstrates a general reluctance to speak ill of peers and colleagues that readers will find either admirable or frustrating), but it is highly informative. Simon continues to write about various policy matters; P.S. will help you understand where he's coming from.

                Book Description

In this candid and sometimes controversial autobiography, the late former SEnator Paul Simon sheares his insights into the activities of President Clinton and other politicians as well as his views on international affairs.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful look at public life.......2006-04-09

Senator Paul Simon (1928-2003) of Illinois was a rare politician who earned respect from nearly all, supporters and opponents. In this readable autobiography, we get a feel for the man, the times, and many important national and international issues. The son of missionaries, warm and sincere, and a bit nerdy in his trademark bow ties, Simon was a highly capable public servant. Here he describes his trail from muckraking newspaper publisher (at age 19) to national political figure. As a young Democratic state legislator from the farm and coal country of Southern Illinois, Simon eventually married a Republican colleague from Chicago's wealthy suburbs. He also describes his time as Lieutenant Governor, defeated candidate for Governor, U.S. Congressman, and U.S. Senator (elected in 1984 & 1990). Simon gives essays on issues such as the U.S. role in the world, entitlements, and campaign finance reform. Simon also gives insights into many heavy hitters he worked with and at times against, from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton, from Mayor Daley to Charles Percy. Simon retired from the Senate in 1996 to lecture at Southern Illinois University - some think he was happiest in that role. This book is an interesting and intelligent read, as warm in its tone as the Senator was in public life.

5 out of 5 stars A great book written by a great Senator.......2003-04-09

The name "Paul Simon" comes with it an aura of respect and admiration from both political parties in Illinois. Paul Simon was a principled liberal and a true blue Democrat, working on both sides of the aisle to get things accomplished in congress yet being standing for core Democratic ideals, like workers rights, social programs, and civil rights for all Americans. He was first elected from the Deep South of Illinois, a traditionally conservative area, as a state legislator and then a US Representative after having made a reputation for himself as a fighter of corruption with his work as a newspaper publisher and editor. He was elected to the US Senate during the Reagan landslide of '84, defeating Republican Senator Chuck Percy, a former liberal Republican who had campaigned on "100% support for the Reagan program". Simon didn't shy away from unpopular votes he made in the house, like his vote against the Reagan tax cut and instead defended his position and attacked Percy for being wishy washy himself. Simon gave the image of a principled Democrat who stood for core Democratic ideals and was willing to work hard and independently for what he stood for, and his hard work, strong record, and dedication led him to victory in 1984 when Ronald Reagan carried Illinois by 600,000 votes.

Simon ran for President in 1988, having made a good showing but having lost because of a lack of funds. He would have made a fine president, in my opinion. His speech for his announcement of his candidacy presents a point that has cemented my belief in a Democratic party -

"The tradition of fighting for decent jobs for all Americans and long-term care for seniors, the tradition of leveling with the American people and having pay-as-you-go government, the concern for quality education for everyone, the tradition of standing up for human rights - these are traditions I embrace, not just with this speech but with my whole heart. Those who tell us to abandon these traditions are telling us to abandon our soul and our chance of winning. I'm pleased that there is a Republican Party, but one Republican Party is enough. You can't win an election by standing for nothing."

In reading the account of this great man, I have renewed hope in what my party stands for. It is true that we are going through a tough time right now and that men like Paul Simon in congress are fewer than before, but the mere fact that people like him can exist in our political system is enough to give me hope for the future. We need more men like Paul Simon.

Simon is truthful and covers many political bases in his book, from Presidents to the media. In it, Simon dispels all possible doubt from his reader of his reputation as an even handed and principled politicians. Simon never shied away from unpopular issues if he believed in them, Simon never let himself get overly partisan and never let politics get in the way of serving the people. I can say that my only dissapointment is that this man isn't serving us anymore, becuase now in these troubled times do we need his leadership the most.

5 out of 5 stars As sincere in reality as he is in his book.......2000-05-07

I have had the opportunity to deal with Paul Simon in a student/teacher relationship. Let me assure anyone who has read or is interested in reading this book that Paul Simon is as sincere as he sounds. Readers who carry the standard stereotypes of politicians should be made aware of the fact the former senator is indeed as high moraled as anyone could be as a leader of our country. He has battle for what he believed to be right instead of what would get him re-elected. It is absolutely refreshing to see a political figure who genuinely wants to make a difference and improve the nation and the world. When the founding fathers set up the framework for this country they had men like Paul Simon in mind to run the "great experiment." Paul Simon is not just a great politician, but an amazing man.

5 out of 5 stars Great autobiography by one of our greatest public servants.......1999-05-16

With all of this messy and ugly trouble going around with the Clinton Administration(Chinagate, Monica, Paula, Kathy Willey, Travelgate, Whitewater, Filegate, Hairgate, etc.), I think we all know, despite what we may say, that Clinton should not have been nominated by the Democrats in 1992. When I look over the Democratic field, 3 names of potential great persons pop up: Mario Cuomo, Bill Bradley and Paul Simon(with nods to the late, great Paul Tsongas, Senator Bob Graham, VP Gore, NC Gov. James Hunt and the late, great Governor of Florida, Lawton Chiles).

Paul Simon is an outstanding American, a proud progressive in the FDR/Truman mold(can you believe those two were once on a ticket - what a vote that must have been!), a decent man and a committed humanitarian. He shows himself to be a fine man of Christian faith and ethics. He has great integrity, as he has shown in his stands on the need for a balanced budget, entitlement reform and health care reform, despite what the press and polls say.

In this book, Simon shows just how great he is. I may not necessarily agree 100% with the Senator, but as both a proud American and a proud Democrat, as well as a person who is sick and tired of the lack of integrity in the White House and politics in general, I think that Simon is great. Two thumbs up for Simon!

By the way, if Senator Simon is reading this, I loved 'Let's Put America Back to Work.' It's a great read on an idea nobody talks about anymore - get the word out on the WPA!

Well, anyway, we should've put America back on the road to integiry in public office and put Simon in the White House in 1992. The least we can do is read his book!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights into the American political process.......1999-02-17

This book is excellent reading for anyone who has an interest in the American political system. Paul Simon spent more than four decades in politics, retiring from the U.S. Senate with a well-deserved reputation for integrity, candor and genuine concern for the public interest. His lifetime of public service is thoroughly documented in this interesting and provocative autobiography.

Simon offers fascinating insights into the American political process at every level as he describes his years as a corruption-fighting state legislator and lieutenant governor in Illinois, his five terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and two terms in the U.S. Senate and his experiences during an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination. (One cannot help but wonder how different things might have been had that campaign been successful!)

Sen. Simon's relationships with political figures such as the late Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicago, U.S. Presidents from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton and an array of international leaders reveal much about the decision-makers of our time. His level of international experience is impressive, and gives weight to his views on the world today and the U.S. role in international affairs.

I personally found his detailed accounts of various campaigns engrossing reading. Others no doubt will be more interested in his insights into the legislative process or his views on hot-button issues like abortion and gun control or vital questions like campaign finance reform and the proposed balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. No matter. There's something here for everyone.

"P.S." left me glad that we had Paul Simon--I'm an Illinois resident so he was my Senator--and happy that he's still involved. Few political figures in our time measure up to his standard. I already knew that, but this book reaffirms it--and then some.

                Book Description

In this revised edition of his earlier biography, Paul Simon provides an inspiring account of the life and work of Elijah Lovejoy, an avid abolitionist in the 1830s and the first martyr to freedom of the press in the United States.

Lovejoy was a native New Englander, the son of a Congregational minister. He came to the Midwest in 1827 in pursuit of a teaching career and succeeded in running his own school for two years in St. Louis. Teaching failed to challenge Lovejoy, however, so he bought a half interest in the St. Louis Times and became its editor. In 1832, after experiencing a religious conversion, he returned east to study for the ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary. After his graduation, Lovejoy was called back to St. Louis by a group of Christian businessmen to serve as the editor of a new religious newspaper, the Observer, promoting religion, morality, and education. It was through this forum that Lovejoy took an ever stronger stance against slavery.

In the slave state of Missouri, such a view was not only unpopular, but in the eyes of many, criminal. As a result, Lovejoy and his family suffered repeated persecution and acts of violence from angry mobs. In July 1836, in hopes of finding a more tolerant community in a "free" state, he moved both his printing press and his family across the Mississippi River to Alton, Illinois.

The move to Alton was a fateful one. Lovejoy’s press was dismantled and thrown into the river by a mob on the night of its arrival. Lovejoy ordered a new printing press, and it, too, was destroyed eleven months later. A determined and dedicated man, Lovejoy ordered a third press, and city officials took special precautions to ensure its safety after delivery. Nevertheless, an organized and angry mob rolled this third press, still in its crate, into the river exactly one month after Lovejoy’s second press had been destroyed. A fourth press, housed in a large stone warehouse and guarded by Lovejoy and his supporters, met the same fate but only after a drunken mob had killed Lovejoy himself. He was buried two days later, 9 November 1837, on his thirty-fifth birthday. No one was ever convicted of his murder.

Rather than suppressing the abolitionist movement, Lovejoy’s death caused an eruption of antislavery activity throughout the nation. At a protest meeting in Ohio, John Brown dedicated his life to fighting slavery, and Wendell Phillips emerged from a Lovejoy protest meeting in Boston to become a leader in the antislavery fight.

Simon defines Lovejoy’s fight as a struggle for human dignity and the oppressed. He distinguishes Lovejoy as a courageous and admirable individual and his story as an important and enduring one for both the cause of freedom for the slaves and the cause of freedom of the press.

If you: are familiar with the charming but rough little city of Alton, Illinois; live near St. Louis; have heard of Elijah Lovejoy but really don't know anything about him; are interested in the times and issues of Americans in other eras; appreciate the late Senator Paul Simon; or, are interested in the issue of slavery and its abolition in America, then this is a book for you. I acquired it only because I attended one of Senator Simon's book signings, but in reading it I was pleasantly surprised to see how well this short biography is presented and how much I learned. The life and times of Lovejoy are extraordinary pieces of American history that, like so many others, are fading from general public knowledge. Simon started life as a newspaper man, and the writing in this book reflects that. Lovejoy's life is presented with stark objectivity. Editorializing is not necessary with these facts anyway.

This is a well-written and short presentation of Lovejoy. There may be more 'scholarly' biographies out there, but if you are interested in the subject, this is a good bet.

5 out of 5 stars Throwing pearls before swine..........2000-03-27

I've concluded that the epic of Mr. Lovejoy, a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln, is about a man who didn't know when to quit. Former U.S. Senator from Illinois, Paul Simon, has formulated a fast reading, riveting rendition of the way too brief life of this "glutton for punishment." Simon's account coincides well with the embarrassing story presented in Alton,IL these days. Still, I was left with questions, like "Why didn't Reverend Lovejoy move on?" "Was Lovejoy the catalyst for the American Civil War rather than John Brown?" and "Why was Abraham Lincoln's duel in Alton cancelled?" I found the answers by visiting the city where the final months of this anti-slavery newspaper editor's life transpired. The tale of Elijah P. Lovejoy, although 165 years old, gave me plenty of food for thought. If you want to know more there are other books. If you want the gist, this volume will serve you well.

                            Book Description

This volume records for the first time a fully documented family history and genealogy of the primary leader of Dutch immigration to western Michigan, Albertus C. Van Raalte, and his wife, Christina de Moen.

Drawing on previously compiled genealogical information, archival records, and family letters and photographs, the authors have worked diligently to "set the record straight" regarding the Van Raaltes' ancestors and descendants, as well as to provide a document that future historians and genealogists can build on. Beginning with a brief biographical sketch of their lives, the book then traces Albertus and Christina's ancestors and tells the story of each of their seven children who lived to adulthood and their respective descendants. Also included is an account of what happened to the Van Raalte papers and homestead.

Fully documented and filled with photographs of the Van Raalte family and homestead, "Albertus and Christina" will be a welcome source for anyone interested in the story of this pioneering family or in the history of western Michigan.
