5 out of 5 stars Hope for frustrated idealists.......2002-12-11

Ideal for people who work in or own any size company and fear they have 'sold out' in order to earn a living wage. McConnell demonstrates in humorous yet logical sequences how one can influence a corporate environment or control one's own decisions and settings with cooperative and socially responsible attitudes and more importantly, actions. Her short quizzes cut right to the issues and actual behaviors, leaving one with hope and even an action plan for becoming a "change activist."

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Passion to Change.......2002-10-16

By putting the heart into business everyone wins. According to Carmel change is not working in many companies because of the lack of passion. Change Activists make things happen because they care

Carmel creates a compelling case for becoming a Change Activist. This benefits the individual, the business and society as a whole. She learnt her activist skills at the Greenham Common US Air Base in the UK and has successfully these skills into the business world

The free flowing style is refreshing. And her case is backed up by many interviews with the likes of Anita Roddick of Body Shop fame

I've recommended this to my website members and they've told me that it has helped them to - take control of their lives, turn up the volumen on what they really care about, and above all - make things happen.

      Definitely different and definitely recommended

          5 out of 5 stars Functional knitting.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent book containing a variety of knitting tips and patterns for useful pieces for the home, such as blankets and cushions. It is a worthwhile investment for any knitter interested in creating useful and attractive objects for themselves or as gifts or heirlooms.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple.......2006-03-09

This is a very basic knitting book. it is a great book to buy for a new knitter as the patterns mostly use garter stitch (all knit rows). As an experienced knitter it is impressive to see how effective the old garter stitch can be. It works really well for home accessories, and doesn't require the purchasing of expensive yarn. In fact, the more basic the yarn (like string and cotton chenille) the better. Unfortunately Erika Knight mostly uses Rowan yarns. Rowan yarns are gorgeous but expensive, particularly when you need large quantities to make a throw rug. Detailed yarn specifications and hints for substitution would have been great.
I would buy this book for a beginner knitter, particularly who doesn't feel inspired by knitting scarves. Despite the photography which really is quite minimalist and appeals to adults, I think the patterns are great for children who are learning to knit. Using garter stitch squares and some funky coloured yarn they can make baskets, cushions and even blankets.
Overall it makes a great present for a new knitter. I'm hoping to inspire the person who will recieve this book and will package it in a string basket (made from the pattern in the book) with a set of needles and a ball of string.

2 out of 5 stars Simple Knits for Easy Living.......2004-06-21

This book is the EXACT same book as Erika Knight's book: Comforts of Home, simple knitted accents. "Simple Knits for Easy Living" was produced for England's market while the "Comforts of Home" was produced for the United States market.

I was very disappointed in the book and thought it lacked creativity. It's definitely TOO basic for an advanced knitter. Not at all worth buying.

Definitively, a book that needed to be written. Kudos to Ratner and Smith for their exhaustive research combined with lucid and skilled writing.
If more people would read this book, debunk the propoganda here in the U.S.A., possibly another Wall would come down with the end of the draconic Embargo against Cuba.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting documents from CIA and FBI on Che........1998-04-14

A great book documenting how the US spied on Che and what the CIA and FBI thought about him, Cuba and Latin America. Of all the recent books on Che this is the only one to reproduce authentic documents reflecting contemporaneous material. We could not put it down.

              Book Description

Finally, owners of small businesses have a practical book that can prepare them for the most common and destructive crises they face. Even problems that would be "small" to a larger company can be disastrous for a small one. Entrepreneurs know this, but many balk at the prospect of crisis planning because it seems endless and overwhelming.

Debra Traverso shows business owners how to best use their limited time and resources to address the most important potential threats to their businesses. By laying basic groundwork for crisis planning and zeroing in on the most likely, most damaging problems, owners can stay a step ahead of the disruptions that plague their peers.

This book covers preventive measures for bullet-proofing a business and explains what to do if a crisis has already struck. It offers a wealth of information in an easy-to-browse format, including proven checklists, examples, case studies, and resources. A "Vulnerability Identification Form" helps the business owner conduct the kind of risk analysis that a large company would typically perform.

Best of all, these strategies are ready to implement immediately, because they don't revolve around 500-page contingency plans and big emergency response teams.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A small business owner's helper.......2006-05-09

At first glance I thought this book was written for managers who regularly put out fires. But when I started studying the book I quickly learned that the book identifies a myriad of typical "fires" that can sprout up at work and describes how a good manager/leader can PLAN so the likelihood of such fires ever starting is minimal. I highly recommend this book for any entrepreneur in business to use when strategically managing his or her business rather than managing with a fire extinguisher.

The book is split into 3 sections:

              1. Principles of planning for a small business
              2. Getting your house in order
              3. When the crisis moves from in-house to the public

My favorite chapter was #3 (Avoid the Most Common Management Missteps), but chapters 2, 4 & 5 were very good ones as well concerning self-audit, employees, and computers. If you are a small business owner, then do yourself a favor and read this book. I suspect it will inform you of a few things you should do at your work that will improve your way of doing things.

I got more advice from this book's chapter on dealing with employees than I
have in the last three books I've read on employee relations, put together. I
especially appreciated the information on how to involve families of
employees to, in turn, motivate the employees even more.. . . and all while
keeping the families out of the way. I'm not sure I agree with Traverso that
a small business can survive and even thrive through a recession, but her
tips seem to make great sense, so I'm going to try them.

This is one of the best books I've read in months on how to manage your
business prudently and efficiently. I bought it so that I would have it on my
shelf for when those frightening unexpected and negative times arise. . .and
we know they do in every business. . . so I was surprised to find myself
reading the book for about two hours without putting it down. I also took the
time to do the small business self-audit, and the author was right: I DO have
problems brewing in my organization that I wasn't even aware existed before I
read the book. Worth the money.

Imagine if Brad Meltzer or John Grisham's first book had been a memoir about working for the Internal Revenue Service and you have an idea of just how thrilling Richard Yancey's Confessions of a Tax Collector: One Man's Tour of Duty Inside the IRS really is. Serving as a revenue agent--or, more informally, a tax collector--of the IRS for two years, Yancey went through strange transformations--from a tall, pencil-thin theater major, in an unforgiving relationship with no steady income, to a mean, muscle-wielding, unyielding revenue officer at the top of his game. What happens in between this tax collecting, money-hungry metamorphosis makes this memorable memoir the stuff of great fiction.

The Americans who shirk tax laws and responsibilities are inevitably tracked, coded, analyzed, pursued, and in general, marked for tax collection by a legion of government workers take center stage. "We have superior intelligence; we know more about our enemies' lives than they know about themselves. We know where they are. We know what they do. We know what they have. We will execute what they fear," Yancey writes. Just envision the line-up of misfits and average joes who populate the screen on Cops or America's Funniest Home Videos and you'll be close to imagining the range of people Yancey tangles with. Vengeful middle managers, hard-working small business owners, mean-spirited tax protestors, hardened tax evaders--the list of characters goes on and on. Every one of the people tracked within the walls of Yancey's local IRS office has the same, pitiful problem: the tax man cometh and the "beast needs to be fed." Equal parts love story, business tale, high-speed chase, and self-evolution, Yancey's Confessions of a Tax Collector packs plenty of human drama--all of it experienced and survived by one man. --E. Brooke Gilbert

                Book Description

Twelve years ago, Richard Yancey answered a blind ad in the newspaper offering a salary higher than what he'd made over the three previous years combined. It turned out that the job was for the Internal Revenue Service -- the most hated and feared organization in the federal government.

So Yancey became the man who got in his car, drove to your house, knocked on your door, and made you pay. Never mind that his car was littered with candy wrappers, his palms were sweaty, and he couldn't remember where he stashed his own tax records. He was there on the authority of the United States government.

With "a rich mix of humor, horror, and angst [and] better than most novels on the bestseller lists" ( Boston Sunday Globe), Confessions of a Tax Collector contains an astonishing cast of too-strange-for-fiction characters. But the most intriguing character of all is Yancey himself who -- in detailing how the job changed him and how he managed to pull himself back from the brink of moral, ethical, and spiritual bankruptcy -- reveals what really lies beneath those dark suits and mirrored sunglasses.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!! Retired IRS worker.......2007-06-21

I love the book about IRS that I worked for IRS 20 years from clerk/typist to tax examiner clerk (12/14/1981 to 01/11/2002). The book are funny stories about IRS that I was a sense of humor IRS employee for 20 years to make my co-workers laugh when I said funny things to the co-workers.

2 out of 5 stars Written by a Tax Collector, Exciting as a Tax Collector.......2007-06-17

I picked up this book and really wanted to enjoy it. I slogged through half the book and just can't finish it. A topic matter with great promise, written by an ex-tax collector who fails to write in any compelling way. The writing, to the contrary, seems very childish; as if it would be a reading selection on an elementary school reading list - the book that every kid hated. Overall, it's saturated with a littany of unimportant details, and as a result, the book never gets going.

As to the reviewer that states it reads like a daily log - I couldn't agree more. The sense of time is totally lost. It just seems like a muddle of random days all thrown together with hardly any real beginning or end. There seems to be no real purpose to the book. This is like buying employment inside the IRS. You get all the boredom without the pay.

This book reads like a daily log. I cannot think of one reason to recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting look at one of America's most hated instiutions.......2006-12-18

Although the information in this book is a bit dated as this branch of the IRS is no longer in use this book was an interesting read. It covers one of the most hated branches of the US government and one of the most hated parts of that branch. The need to feed the beast is well illustrated and how one can get sucked into that world is easily seen. Very interesting and scary look at what happens to those in power of our tax system.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2006-11-23

I read this book in one sitting it is that good. This book is set in earlier IRS days (1980s / 1990s if I rememeber correctly) so don't think it's very recent; although, who knows... the same kind of stuff might still go on.
