Nothing new here.......2006-10-06

This book is just your standard job search advice, with a series of tips grouped by topic (resumes, interviewing, networks), from career assessment (she only says that you should) to salary negotiation.

The majority of these tips tell you *what* to do but offer nothing on *how* to do it. For example, she says to "Use keywords," discussing their importance and where to use them, but doesn't offer any print or online resources or hints on how to do determine what those are. Some of the tips being unhelpful, unrealistic, or dated. (For example, most people are hip to what informational interviews really are, and for those in tech industries, print ads are probably the least effective way to find a job.)

It's like a skeleton of job search tips with no meat on the bones. I would have assumed by the title that there would be advice specific to a slumping job market. (Her advice? "Move.") Or that there would be advice on how to keep one's job through an acquisition or downsizing. With so many better books out there (Job Search Magic, Knock 'Em Dead, What Color Is Your Parachute, etc) on the generic topic of finding a job, I can't see why anyone would waste their time on this one.

Excellent Value and Great Recipes.......2002-11-09

I bought this book so I could cook the same foods my Irish-born husband grew up with. It has come through time and again. He swears the Brown Bread I make is exactly like his Mum's but I got it straight out of this book! There's a little bit of everything; from simple sauces to soups, vegetables, main dishes, breads and desserts and more complex recipes (like traditional Christmas cake that takes a couple of days to make!).

My one "complaint" would be that this smallish book likes to close by itself especially when I've got my hands in the flour so remember to weight it open beforehand.

However, I give 5 stars because you get a bunch of really great recipes for a reasonable price. So worth it!

Great Value, Nice Illustrations.......2001-03-09

I love this book! The price is right and the recipes are delicious. Marlene Ekman has illustrated a number of books for Sterling, and her illustrations are always charming. If you are looking for a special St. Pat's recipe, you'll find it here! Easy-to-follow directions for even the most inexperienced cook. There's something for everyone! I highly recommend it! For those with a little more money to spend, try Celtic Folklore Cooking (great folklore/history background); Irish Heritage Cookbook; and Irish Traditional Cooking.

I have been a "birder" for over 45 years and a gardener (in a very sloppy, haphazard way) for just about as long. This is a wonderul work that fits well into my hobbies. It is simple, practical and a joy to work with. As another reviewer pointed out, the ideas put forth in this book actually work! I was also thrilled that most of these projects were ones that my four grandsons were more than able to help with and in doing so, actually taught them something. I happen to live in a rural area, infact, I live in the middle of the woods. Most of the projects in this book were non-intrusive and blended in well with the natural look that my wife and I strive for. Recommend you add this one to your library. Now if I can just train my nine barn cats......

I got this book 21 years ago for Christmas when I was 12 years old. I have built too many bird houses to count based on species specifications in this book. The examples of construction will give you a good foundation on how to build appropriate bird housing. My copy is now in its second generation use. My son has built one from plans in this book.

The book does have plans and drawings, but the instructions are not nearly as complete as the title would have you believe. I thought that it would be more detailed than it is and would include more original plans. The ones in here are just basic plans that are included in every free plan site I've found, so why pay for them?

Great book for simple, beginner birdhouses.......2001-02-16

I've been hogging this book from my local library, and just decided to add it to my wishlist for an upcoming birthday.

The plans are simple and very straightforward, oriented for people without expensive woodworking tools or without a lot of experience. The book includes eight birdhouse plans and six feeder plans. Several of the plans include optional variations. The plans are easy to understand.

These would also be good plans to build with a son or daughter.

The book is well written and up to date. It also includes a large table of specifications for houses/feeders that will attract specific types of birds.

This book is a classic on building birdhouses. I grew up with this book in the 1960's and was very happy to find a replacement on amazon. My only complaint is that this book is out of print.

I LOVE this book. It has plans for many bird feeders and houses (especially houses). The plans are will drawn and easy to follow. This book has houses/feeders that can be finished by various skill levels from beginner to pro.

If you're looking for A LOT of options in birdhouses, this book is for you. It gives plans for all sorts of houses and feeders, as well as basic information about the different species' housing needs. There is very little written instruction, just drawings and dimensions. (Two drawbacks: some of the drawings are pretty crowded and take a bit to decipher, and there is no index.) There are very basic plans as well as extremely complex designs. This book is for novice and expert alike. Mostly, it's for bird lovers.

It's a relief that a book like this has been released. Newfield paints the truth about Guliani and is quite fair. Everything discussed in the book is based on fact and shows that Guliani, in reality, was nothing but a sub-par mayor who screwed New York City in numerous ways. Newfield admits that there is no denying that Guliani did a great job after the attacks on Sept. 11 - but that does not necessarily mean that all should be forgotten for his poor work as a mayor from the years before. Want to know the real Guliani? Read this book. You'll be amazed by the truth, whether Guliani wants you to hear it or not.

Jack Newfield, who wrote for the Village Voice for many many years, is one of the last of the great muckraking journaLists. They have been replaces by tabloid tv journalism,which is another story.This book takes on one of the recent myths of the new century,that of "americas mayor" Rudolph Guliani. Newfield straight away calls him a"c+ mayor",which is actually rather objective.Chapter by chapter,he brings up the screwy foibles of the Guliani years{his refusal to meet with any minority politicains,to gather votes for a compromise, outside of herman Badillo cost him control of the Board of Ed and led to cuts in education and no contract for the teachers for over 2 years}His bullying of anyone who didnt agree with him is well documented.Newfield acknowledges the great job that Guliani did for theose terribel two weeks in september of 2001,but states, convincingly that the work of his adminstartion must be judged from "september 10 and before" also. It's good to see Albion Fellows Bacon get some well deserved credit and attention for her hard work during her live. Although not as famous as her older sister, Annie Fellows Johnston, Albion probably did more for the needy. Very well wrote with lots of information I never knew existed.
