Book Description
In our increasingly busy lives, meals need to be fast, healthy, and light. In Keep It Seasonal, acclaimed chef Annie Wayte offers 100 recipes, each with a spectacular color photograph of the finished dish, for simple soups, salads, and sandwiches organized by season so that home cooks can make the most of fresh, available produce. Keep It Seasonal is the ideal cookbook for those who shop at farmer's markets, Whole Foods, and Wild Oats.
Why purchase asparagus out of season when the prices are sky high? Why buy strawberries in winter when they are tasteless and full of water? Not only is produce more affordable when it is in season, but its quality and nutritional content are at their peak. In Keep It Seasonal, chef Annie Wayte awakens cooks to ingredients that are truly fresh, local, and in season, and explains why buying locally grown foods is better than buying organic food trucked in from thousands of miles away.
Within the four seasonal chapters, the recipes are organized into three sections: soups, salads, and sandwiches. Home cooks can mix and match with recipes such as Fresh Pea Soup with Morels, Crispy Prosciutto and Leek Salad with Mustard Dressing, and Grilled Spicy Lamb Sandwiches on Flat Bread with Pistachio Relish (spring), or Squash Soup with Roasted Chestnuts and Pancetta, Pomegranate Glazed Quail with Cinnamon and Raisin Tabbouleh, and Gorgonzola, Pear, and Honey Open Sandwiches (autumn). The recipes are simple and easy to prepare because the fresh ingredients speak for themselves, and each includes a full–color photo of the finished dish.

Tastey simplicity all year.......2007-01-03
The beautiful photos in this book make it inviting, and the recipes make you glad you accepted the invitation. I've prepared many of them and, indeed, will use the book in a cooking class I'm teaching. The focus on soups, salads, and sandwiches keeps the recipes fairly simple, while the use of seasonal food keeps the tastes fresh, even when one lives in north, as I do.
Excellent Treatment of Seasonal Dishes. Buy It!.......2006-07-18
`Keep It Seasonal' by international restauranteur, Annie Wayte is a fine example of how to do a book on seasonal recipes. While Ms. Wayte has obviously gone to school with Deborah Madison's doctrines, specifically those in Madison's `Local Flavors', it seems to me that at least compared to `Local Flavors', Ms. Wayte has actually done a better job of promoting seasonal cooking.
I am generally very favorably inclined towards books giving recipes by the season or by the month, and Ms. Wayte has enhanced this first impression by focusing on `Soups, Salads, and Sandwiches'. First, as she correctly states, sandwiches are a woefully ignored corner of the culinary world (however, the current interest in Paninis, New Orleans specialities, Philly cheese steaks, and other trends suggests this is changing). I can count on one hand, with fingers left over, the really good books on sandwiches, with only `Nancy Silverton's sandwich book' being worthy of a place in a carefully selected cookbook collection. But sandwiches are also a great subject for a seasonal presentation, as so many ingredients are fresh. And, you don't want to spend a fortune on sandwich makings, so the seasonal lettuce and other veggies are always welcome.
The same argument works in spades for salads, as virtually all the more common salad ingredients are seasonal, including major protein sources such as lamb and fish. Soups can come along for the ride, as they are such great accompaniments to salads and sandwiches.
Several seasonal cookbooks, such as Alfred Portale's '12 Seasons Cookbook' and Brother Victor-Antoine d'Avila Latourrette's Monastery cookbooks (including soups and salads!) break things down by month, but I suspect dividing things by season is quite adequate for almost all produce.
If the seasonality thing were the only points of contact between Wayte and Madison, I would not be too impressed, but Wayte seems to have learned from (or in parallel with) Madison about the efficacy of creating stocks to match the soup. The simplest example of this is to create a broth for corn soup from the cleaned husks, after removing the kernels.
Ms. Wayte begins each season with a list of ingredients commonly available in that season, including meats, herbs, and even edible flowers along with the fruits and veggies. While she makes no special note of the fact, it is interesting to note that some vegetables such as broccoli are bi-seasonal, as they show up in the lists for both spring and fall. Speaking of broccoli, I do have to point out a slightly misleading photograph of a warm broccoli salad, where the recipe simply says `broccoli' but the photograph has broccoli rabe. I really suspect 7 out of 10 people who commonly use broccoli don't even know about broccoli rabe and would never look for it to work in a `broccoli recipe', and yet, broccoli rabe really works better in the recipe, especially with its fellow Italian ingredients, Parmesan cheese and black olives.
Otherwise, I was quite taken by the recipes in this book. There were a few `standards' such as a recipe for a Caesar's salad, which is similar to, but not identical to the Caesre Cardini original (based on the testimony of Julia Child, who was taught how to make the recipe by Maestro Caesre's daughter). This means that one can look forward to a fair number of relatively original takes on some standard themes. Ms. Wayte is especially fond of the sharp tasting greens such as watercress, arugula, and others, some of which one may have a bit of trouble finding. But then, the great thing about most greens is that they are eminently interchangeable.
If it has not been obvious from my previous statements, I must be clear that one way in which Miss Wayte parts company with our vegetarian Deborah is that Annie is highly omnivorous. There are lots of recipes for various types of animal protein in among the veggies standards, such as edible flowers and the like.
One thing that certainly impresses me about the book is that in spite of its oversized volume, it is priced below the average list of $35. This is quite in line with the number of recipes and is not inflated for the large pages or the supersized pics. It's almost unfortunate that the book has the appearance of a coffee table ornament, as it is certainly worthy to be used in the kitchen. The only problem is that its oversized proportions and glossy appearance may inhibit one. If so, be sure to buy it cheap or photocopy recipes for the kitchen rather than lugging the quarto tome into harm's way.
One thing I must point out is that some techniques for some recipes are just a bit involved. This is not your '30 Minute Meal' trip. There is much use of blenders and fine strainers on the path between the fridge and the final soup, just as there is much to do with homemade dressings. But, for the right audience, this is a plus, as one simply cannot achieve a truly gorgeously green puree of watercress without some skill and a few specialized pieces of equipment, not to mention some real attention to detail along the way.
This is a book that aimed for a really worthy target, and made a bulls-eye!
Excelente!.......2006-07-03
Excelente recetario, especialmente para gente que vive sola o que es media floja para guisar. Las recetas son originales, ricas y lo mejor es que se adaptan a los ingredientes de cada temporada. Altamente recomendable!!!
Gorgeous and Practical.......2006-05-11
I've read about the author in a few magazines recently (and in the NY Times last year, I think), so when I saw the book, I was at first worried that it was too beautiful and full of amazing photos and so the food must be difficult. But I was wrong - I've tried a few things and they are really pretty simple. And it's great that I can look up recipes in the Spring chapter right now and know that the ingredients are in season. As well, the recipes are really creative and I love that Ms. Wayte includes sweet soups and sandwiches as desserts - I made rubarb soup last night! However, the best recipes, at least from the way they look in the book (I think there is a photo of every recipe), must be the salads. There are some amazing combinations and they all look like they could be a meal in themselves.
Anyone looking for a great gift for a novice or accomplished cook could do a lot worse than this!
Book Description
Appliqué involves placing one layer of fabric over another and stitching it in place. Since the sewn layer can be virtually any shape, appliqué allows for far more visual possibilities than piecing, but traditional methods can be time-consuming. This book combines popular time-saving materials and methods such as fusible web, water-soluble fabric stabilizer, and machine stitching with fresh, simple techniques to create stunning projects such as multitextured quilt blocks and pillows. Twenty-five projects explore yarn coiling, felt layering, transparent collage, chenille appliqué, and designs inspired by traditional paper-cutting techniques from around the world. Offering crafters more challenges are additional projects that combine all the above techniques into 10 very unique designs. Over 100 beautiful color illustrations and photographs clearly illuminate these projects for both new and experienced quilters and crafters.

The other side of the story.......2005-03-02
It is the first biography I have read of Ernesto Che Guevara. I had previously read many different articles about him singing the praises of this so-called hero of the Cuban revolution. But behind this halo of bravery, Fernando Díaz Villanueva shows us another character. A man who might conceal a different ego: for a start, his academic record in the medical school he attended is surprisingly not available, and so his much-vaunted medical condition may at the very least be taken with certain precaution.
Fernando studies the nature of many of his speeches and of his writings, the heart of a propaganda machine. He questions their lucidity on and on with down-to-earth data, showing the negative results of his political decisions, or how he could never get growth forecasts of the Cuban economy right.
You can tell right away that there is a lot of research work behind this opinionated book. I hesitated a lot: 4 or 5 stars. I finally went for the four stars because of the style in his writing. It looks as though he would be a close friend from Madrid talking to me, adding here and there extreme adjectives that got me on the defensive. I may be picky, but I'd rather find some richer and not so familiar language in a book like this.
All in all, a great book for all Spanish readers wanting to find some light in this murderous myth, who is still present in so many t-shirts the world over.

Title: Fidel Castro 'suicid
Book Description
Niccolini is no ordinary night watchman in the train yard. He has a special talent: he can sing overwrought locomotives to sleep. Before long, parents get wind of Niccolini's skill and bring their crying babies, sleepless children, and barking dogs to the rail yard, hoping to soothe them into slumber. But how will Niccolini's gentle song be heard in all this racket? Gorgeously brought to life with dramatic oil paintings, Niccolini's Song is music so sweet, and a story so comforting, even the most restless young listeners will drift off to peaceful dreams.

love it.......2007-01-16
What a sweet book, especially for children who love trains. It is very soothing as I am lulled when my husband reads it to my son!!
Enchanting.......2007-01-15
We bought this for our 2year old son for Christmas that is becoming really fascinated with trains. It is a wonderful story and isn't just enjoyable for him, but me as well. It is a book that is captivating for all ages and highly recommend.
A Must Have for Little Engineers.......2007-01-12
My five-year-old has been a Thomas the Tank Engine fanatic since he received his first video on his first birthday. I stumbled across this book in an outlet mall and was captivated by the illustrations. The story is simple and sweet and we read it every night at bedtime. I've bought copies for our friends with little ones with similar interests. This book is well worth the purchase price!
Enchanting bedtime story.......2007-01-03
I bought Niccolini's Song for my 4 year old son, because he is in love with trains and hates going to sleep. The endearing story and the lovely illustrations capture a child's imagination and it is a pleasure to read just before going to sleep. He loves it and it is one of his favorite bedtime stories. At least it makes him get IN the bed and stay there.
Beautiful book and a touching story........2005-03-16
We bought this book as a special treat for my 3 year old son who is train obsessed. From the first read, he AND his little sister loved it. The story is wonderfully soothing to read at night. If we happen to read it during the day we always find something new. (Look closely at the paper blowing in the wind). I would recommend this book to a girl or boy.

Absolute Pleasure.......2006-05-03
As a reader, I judge a good book not by its cover, but by the following three characteristics; the difficulty to put it down once it's picked up, the amount of emotion it stirs while being read, and the desire for more once the last page is complete. "Lullaby", and its author have accomplished all three in a splendid story telling fashion. I read well past bedtimes and nearly missed a few train stops, I laughed out loud and sobbed quietly, and I am making a personal plea to this author to write again!
A Ride Worth Taking!.......2002-07-31
I just loved A-Train Lullaby. (I just finished it last night with tears in my eyes -- and not just because it had come to an end ...) This book really captured my interest with it's creative approach and made me want to know more and read more. I found the book to be insightful, spritual, courageous and (last but not least) FUNNY! I love the way Ms. Flores assigned "names" to the people in her life. The book stirred so many wonderful emotions in me -- it was a ride worth taking!

Sleepytime Lullabies.......2000-05-25
I almost wore this cassette out playing it for my first child. Now I am using it all over again for my four month old. He smiles whenever he hears it! It is a great collection of traditional lullabies. Our favorite is "Bedtime Song".

Book Description
Project sponsors can have a tremendous impact on the success of key projects. However, in reality, they miss the mark and are often uninvolved or over-involved and confused about their roles. The purpose of this guide is to help managers add value as sponsors of cross-functional projects; including development projects, information system projects, organizational change projects, and process improvement projects.
Section I explains the roles of the project sponsor as mentor, catalyst, motivator, barrier buster, boundary manager, and liaison to senior management. Key tasks of the project sponsor are explained, including how to effectively set up a project team and how to support the team throughout the project cycle.
Section II identifies over 20 common project team problems that arise, and provides alternate solutions for dealing with them.
The Appendix provides some helpful tools to increase team effectiveness and, therefore, project performance. This to-the-point and quick reading for today's busy executives and managers is a one-of-a-kind source that describes the unique and challenging support that executives and managers must provide to be effective sponsors of project teams. It's intended for executives and middle managers who will be, or are, sponsors of a project, particularly cross-functional projects. It is also helpful reading for facilitators and project leaders.
Customer Reviews:
The author shouldn't review their own book!!!.......2004-03-16
I am concerned about the published review as it looks like the author has given his own book a 5 star rating.
Good content, but not enough and very pricey.......2001-03-07
I was looking for a book that would help customers step into the role of a project sponsor, so I thought this book might be helpful. After I received it, I was surprised at the "shortness" of the book, both in number of pages and the size of the margins. This was especially true given the price of the book.
There is some good content here, and it might be helpful. I do believe there are better, less expensive, and more comprehensive alternatives to this book...
AUTHOR DECSRIPTION.......2000-10-01
This quick reference guide was written to help important project teams be more successful - especially cross-functional project teams.
Project Sponsors, Project Leaders and Team Facilitators will find the book useful. It clarifies roles, explains the value add of Project Sponsors and provides practical advice for overcoming common project team problems such as - · How to get derailed teams back on track ... · What to do about team members missing important meetings ... · How to handle team conflicts ... · How to create a sense of urgency in slow-moving teams ... How to help a burned-out team leader!
THE PROJECT SPONSOR GUIDE IS A TO-THE-POINT, QUICK READ FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO MAKE PROJECT TEAMS MORE SUCCESSFUL.
Practical, Thorough, Readable.......2000-09-02
This guide, useful for both Project Sponsors and Project Leaders, covers the roles and activities of Project Sponsors thoroughly, from project inception to completion. While covering a lot of ground, there are not a lot of words--definitions are brief, and the book is full of checklists. I found this to be particularly helpful considering how busy most business leaders are. This is a book that can be opened to a particular spot and used in the moment it is needed. No wading through long chapters to find the nuggets--the book is a compilation of nuggets! Another useful section is the one covering common problems that project teams can run into, and how the project sponsor can help. Again, brief and practical sections covering a description of the problem, possible causes, and things to try.
A Good Basic Guide.......2000-08-12
According to the authors, this guide is intended for managers and executives who are or will be Project Sponsors. Although the authors suggest it would be helpful reading by Project Managers, this reviewer believes the real potential of the text is when both the Project Sponsor and the Project Manager use it as a boundary guide in their journey to successful project execution. As much as the Project Sponsor needs to know her/his roles and activities, the Project Manager needs to know what support the sponsor should provide. Through this guide the two of them can have meaningful discussions relative to each other's expectations.
The text is well organized and concise, which provides for a quick reference.

Book Description
The Place of Supply in European VAT is an ordered, comprehensive survey of rules and practice regarding taxable transactions in European value added tax (VAT). Relevant theories and principles are addressed first, in particular the avoidance of double taxation or the absence of taxation in the field of VAT and the territoriality, destination, benefit, and equality principles. Subsequent chapters analyse the rules relating to the place of taxable transactions regarding supply of goods, supply of services, and intra Community acquisitions, including simplification measures for triangulation and importation. In each instance, the work includes discussion of the legislative history of the relevant Second Directive provision, the Proposal for the Sixth VAT Directive, and the original Sixth VAT Directive. Practical examples and European Court of Justice caselaw illustrate the discussion of existing rules. The last chapter deals with the `final' system, as proposed by the European Commission, providing for a single place of taxation for VAT purposes within the Community. This detailed reference work provides essential information for tax practitioners, academics, and advanced students of tax law.
