Excellent food.......2007-08-11
I've been to his restaurant in Maui and the food was fabulous. So good in fact that I bought this book. While I could use more examples of fish to swap for things only a Hawaiian can get I find the recipes so easy a beginner can use them to make some fantastic food. I highly recommend this book.

For beginners, there's a nice introduction to different basic japanese foods and rolling techniques with pictures. There are recipes for sushi, and small and large entrees. I've been to one of the two Sansei restaurants on Maui and the recipes from this book definately cover some of the best things on their menu. The only minor change I could see to make it better is more information about using pre-made grocery store sauces instead of making everything from scratch.

Loved the ease of instruction in making sushi. Not hard to follow, well done. Also like the homespun family history. It is a great guide to not only sushi but everthing else in his style. A lot of fun.

This book meets its promise of deflating the academic presentations contained in more theoretical marketing books. Too often, those books sub-divide and label marketing approaches and customer acquisition strategies into acronym-ridden codes that only confuse readers. Many of these books assume that the customer is the center of the marketing universe. Author Stephen Brown contends just the opposite. Customers are not the core of the cosmos. At best, constantly catering to their whims and changing tastes often ties marketers into unproductive knots. Using powerful - if sometimes questionable - examples, Brown shows that customers readily follow good marketing campaigns. Yet, the book relies so heavily on alliteration, puns and perky jokes that it often becomes just too cute, which impedes its solid marketing message. We recommend it as useful reading for marketing professionals who seek fresh ideas and a break from the old jargon. Alas, despite its title, no free gift comes with it, other than some razzle-dazzle marketing war stories.

Stephen Brown has a way of making marketing so much fun, why should it be serious?
From the start it becomes totally clear the Author is totally up on his content, and knowledge, this is NOT simply a license to rant and rave to people who pay $20 and want to get their moneys worth.
The examples are current, or if are not current, are totally relevent to the topic at hand, though his explanation of what is basically 'exclusive' marketing, or the idea that by not giving people what they want, they will only want what you offer even more.
I cannot reccomend this book more highly, as a marketing student it really should be required reading as its not only interesting and relevent, but makes the topic so much damn fun!.
Amazing, brilliant, different.......2003-12-07
Wow! I didn't see this one coming. Brown's writing style is literary electricity. His method of teaching brands his lessons on your brain. He case studies and research would make the New York Library look like kindergardners with crayons. I LOVE this book. Haven't read anything this good since, well, re-reading one of my own books. Flagship Book On Leadership.......2007-07-09
This was the first training and book that I ever participated in on leadership. And, that was 21 years ago! It is still timely and effective. I was impressed in re-reading the book how much of the practices that I had incorporated and made my own. This training and book made a remarkable impact in my life.
If you want the basics on leadership in one bundle - then you want this book. Read it. Use it. Re-read it. Become a more effective and influential leader.

Good, but since I have already read the Parent Effectiveness Training it was a little redundant, and slow moving.
A Keeper for Leadership Skills.......2007-04-12
I bought this book to use as a reference for a paper that I was writing on the subject of leadership for a communication class. The class had to do with small group communication. As I read Dr. Gordon's approach to leadership, I found that his participative management style was really what I was looking for and a great fit for how leadership can work effectively in a small group. Although the style of his book is definitely written as a "training" book for effective leadership, it has many thought provoking and practical insights that you can apply in many other areas of your life. We all find ourselves in groups throughout our lives in various and diverse situations and circumstances. This book offers some down to earth, common sense advice that you can take and apply when you find yourself as the "leader of the pack" so to speak.
I particularly enjoyed the section on " Doing it yourself - or with the groups help". I think that many people mistakenly believe that you have to use your power and manipulate people to be a good leader and to get a job done. Dr. Gordon shows the advantages of being a facilitator and drawing upon the strengths and resources of all members of the team.
The principles described in this book will not go out of style, because it deals with people communicating with people. Times may change, but leading people will still be the common factor that spans the ages. It can be a great tool for a new leader or for one who wants to brush up on their leadership skills. As a student, I know I'll be referring to it in future classes. This will definitely be one of those books that I'll keep on my bookshelf for future reference.

Excellent Life Skills.......2007-03-12
This is not just for -- or even mainly for -- leadership training. This book teaches simple communication skills that apply to any relationship in which conflict occurs. I bought seven copies for my work team. I only wish the author would provide a concise synopsis of his approach for those who don't have time/inclination to read the entire book. I had to do this myself.
I have also read and put to good use the author's Parent Effectiveness Training. Why Dr Gordon's approach is not more widely known and put to use is beyond me. The world would be a much better place if more people understood and used these simple concepts.

The best book on the Leadership Development concept & practice. Should be part of any HR degree curiculum covering leadership development.
MUST READ for people who want to development themselves, line managers and aspiring HR professionals.

I've used this book many times to educate Leaders in organizations how to build a leadership pipeline and WHY it is important. This is one of the best "sleeper" books on the subject of leadership development, the business case behind succession planning and what a company can do about it. I've worked with the tools from their company for years with great success.
A great resource for managers.......2004-01-16
I have read the The Leadership Machine and other books by the authors. This book is a great tool for managers, Human Resources professional, and anyone who is in a position to help people develop professionally. This book is not your typical managerial self-help book; you won't find any fables or references to FISH here. If you are looking for a guide to developing people in your organization based on research and the experience of the authors this is the book for you. I have used this book to plan my own development and to help others think about their development. If you are going to read this book I would recommend you purchase For Your Improvement (FYI) as well. This is a great starting point, but be aware this is only the tip of the iceberg for what these Lominger offerings can do for you and your company. My organization has worked with Lominger for a number for years and have had great success implementing their strategies.

The book gives a thorough discussion on the PRACTICAL implementation of the Transactional Ananlysis "I am OK, You are OK" theory.
It is therefore a must read if you are into Transaction Analysis or you just want to imporve your leadership skill.

One of the best on leadership - a classic........2000-03-12
Dr. Gordon's pioneering book "Group-Centered Leadership" was published in 1955. Later he wrote best selling "Parent Effectiveness Training," highly praised Teacher Effectivess Training and this leadership book. I still believe Gordon is one of the most influential thinkers on the topic of working well with others. His "No-Lose" method was later re-invented as the "Win-Win" method of problem solving. Learning his active listening method and using it for the past 30 years has been the most valuable tool I've had in becoming a successful parent, spouse and business person. I've solved many problems by doing nothing except listen to others. I've also mediated many crisis situations for global companies and health organizations by teaching and using active listening with those involved in the conflicts.

A couple days ago I was explaining the "Gordon model" to a coleague (we're both managers who work for a chain of restaurants). As we conversed, two of our new cooks, who were arguing about something, came to me to vent their frustrations. I'm sure they expected for me to decide which one of them was right about the situation and then take sides. Instead, using the No-Lose problem-solving techniques I learned from the book (finding solutions so that both parties get their needs met), I facilitated a session in which the cooks found a mutually satisfying solution to their problem. All I did is mediate, made sure they listened to one another. My coleague was amazed, noticing the gradual change in attitude and body language - the lowered resistence - as they both realized they could solve their problem in a way that was beneficial to both of them. Later in the day my colegue noticed the same two cooks who had been arguing earlier helping one another and making jokes as they worked through the evening rush.
I came into Amazon to order a copy of L.E.T. as a gift for my coleague when I saw there was an opportunity to pay back Dr. Gordon by reviewing the book. So, here's my pitch: There are management theories aplenty out there. But the fundamental truth is nothing will ever get done well if communication between people isn't smooth and effective. What I've managed to do, thanks to what I learned from L.E.T., is to fuse my team together and to create synergy. And, as the team has become more self-sufficient, that frees me up to do what I'm good at rather than always having to waste time fixing problems for them.
The techiques that Dr. Gordon teaches, I-Messages, Active Listening, etc., are tools that transcend workplace usufulness; they are techniques that help us in any kind of relationship, be they professional, personal or familial.
In short, BUY THIS BOOK!

I read the book in 1990, attended a seminar, and put the communication skills into practice in my work life and my personal life. Dr. Gordon does a great job of showing how to use "I-messages" and active listening to communicate effectively and to get folks to solve their own problems. There's even a good section on effective meetings.
Our company has made L.E.T. one of the foundation elements of supervisor training.
