Guess What Happened To ME!.......2003-07-13
I bought this book back in the summer of 2001. I HATE to brag, but the info contained within got me into a HOLLYWOOD PREMIERE at Paramount Motion Picture Studios, and I had chance to meet the chairman of the board...
Good Info.......2002-02-06
Book had a lot of good info, all in one place. Good Book
Great tool and interesting read!.......2002-01-27
I've read this book twice and continually reference it while I go about the business of developing new contacts. Though a large portion of the book contains directory information (i.e., list of corporations, trade show, charities, etc.) I found it to be a good and at humorous read. Using the techniques in this book can yield some impressive results. If you're not willing to have an open mind and actually try some of the authors' hints then pass on this book. If, on the other hand, you want to make changes in your life then buy it and go for it!
This Book Got Me A Job.......2002-01-15
I bough this book hoping it could help me break into the computer software industry - everyone kept telling me I had to network. This book seemed interesting, so I bought it and followed the system and just got a job offer yesterday. I'm totally excited. Buy ths book!

A huge waste of money!.......2006-02-06
If I could get my money back on this book, I would. The patterns were blah, the fabric choices she used were beyond bland. All the patterns do have the "country look" which I like, but there was no pizazz to anyting. I was disgusted within the first few pages. This is the first review I've done on a book (and I buy a lot of quilting books) but I just had to write this one. Save your money.

Book Description
When Elizabeth Bentley slunk into an FBI field office in 1945, she was thinking only of saving herself from NKGB assassins who were hot on her trail. She had no idea that she was about to start the greatest Red Scare in U.S. history.
Bentley (1908-1963) was a Connecticut Yankee and Vassar graduate who spied for the Soviet Union for seven years. She met with dozens of highly placed American agents who worked for the Soviets, gathering their secrets and stuffing sensitive documents into her knitting bag. But her Soviet spymasters suspected her of disloyalty--and even began plotting to silence her forever. To save her own life, Bentley decided to betray her friends and comrades to the FBI. Her defection effectively shut down Soviet espionage in the United States for years.
Despite her crucial role in the cultural and political history of the early Cold War, Bentley has long been overlooked or underestimated by historians. Now, new documents from Russian and American archives make it possible to assess the veracity of her allegations. This long overdue biography rescues Elizabeth Bentley from obscurity and tells her dramatic life story.
Customer Reviews:
The book to read Before Whittaker Chamber's.......2004-07-01
Once the depression struck many elitist students (such as Miss Bentley at Vassar) seemed to begin to feel guilty of their privileged position in society. For those who had not religious grounding this opened up the possibility for other faiths to explain the crisis of history that they perceived themselves to be living through. Paul Johnson, in his book "The Quest for God" makes the point that people long for a faith to believe in and when conventional religion fails to satisfy they seek a substitute. Environmentalism, nuclear dis-armament, anti-globalism and other such "movements" attract such folk. For Elizabeth Bentley it was fascism, then communism, that served this purpose. She associated herself with the CPUSA (Communist Party of the USA) and through this met Jacob Golos, a soviet agent. With this individual she became romantically involved, even though Golos had a wife back in the USSR. Eventually Golos gets caught in a passport fraud scheme which effectively blows his anonymity vis-a-vis the FBI, forcing him to utilize his mistress Bentley as a front. So she gets involved and covers Golos before the onset of the Nazi-Soviet pact which leads the FBI to begin paying more attention to communists within the USA. In time Golos gets ill and Bentley progressively takes on more responsibility, including running an underground network of Americans who were spying for Soviet intelligence. I don't want to detail the whole book so I'll just conclude by saying why Bentley was significant and why you ought to read this slim book. Elizabeth Bentley testified later that all communists were potential spies for the USSR. Communism wasn't just an intellectual proclivity ala liberalism or conservatism. She was the one who detailed how the head of the CPUSA, for instance, took direction straight from Moscow. The party's rank and file, moreover, was similarly loyal to the USSR, she testified. She was, in other words, the missing link connecting the CPUSA with the USSR and soviet intelligence. The fascinating part of this great story (well told by the book's author) is that her most damning accusations of espionage couldn't be proved by the FBI, as her contacts were all tipped off soon after she came "in from the cold", so to speak, once she turned herself in to American authorities. She had her sceptics. It just was hard to believe what she claimed could be true; that many senior American officials could be passing intelligence to the USSR. The US Army began to break some coded cables of the Soviets beginning in 1948 which confirmed Miss Bentley's accusations, but the public wasn't privy to this development, of course. Miss Bentley, consequently, continued to be portrayed as a crackpot by many in government and especially in the media. The fortunate appearance of Whittaker Chambers on the public scene, making similar accusations as Bentley...but eventually providing some proof to back it up, in the end, saved the day....and Miss Bentley's reputation. These individuals thus proved the case that the USSR was trying to undermine the USA even while we were allied to one another during WW2; that Stalin was gearing up for a cold war years before liberals accused FDR, Truman, and Eisenhower of choosing hostility over cooperation with the USSR. Read this book before Witness by Whittaker Chambers for a great 1-2 punch against political naivete. Thanks for reading my opinion.
Loneliness in the Spotlight--America's "Red Blond Spy Queen".......2003-08-25
Red Spy Queen: A Biography of Elizabeth Bentley
By Kathryn S. Olmsted
University of North Carolina Press, 2002
Reviewed by Kenneth R. Kahn
"Either the government attacks you or they put you on the payroll" Chris Warnock
The long trail of bread crumbs leading to American communists acting as Soviet agents inside the U.S. government and the beginnings of the red scare in the 1950s leads to one woman--Elizabeth Bentley.
Long before the revelations of the Venona cables, Elizabeth Bentley, variously described as a spinster, neurotic, alcoholic, sexual adventuress, communist spy and FBI informant, was transmitting secrets to the Soviet Union on everything imaginable.
Elizabeth Bentley, born of New England parents, was a historic anomaly, a footnote in the history of the cold war and American communism. She brought her American character and applied it to her dealings with both Soviet agents and fellow American communists. She was one of those figures whose lifestyle intertwined with her actions and how she is portrayed by history is a direct result of this interaction.
Bentley, having followed a long, tortured and circuitous route to the FBI's field office in New Haven, Connecticut in 1945, remade American politics and led to the exposure of the top communists in America.
One of the primary themes, and intriguing concepts behind this book, is that it exposes a heretofore, seemingly unimportant person in early cold war history. Bentleyýs life and roller coaster like adventures stand in stark contrast to her personal appearance. Deemed by the press, ýthe blond spy queený she hardly seems to me a seductress. She seems a plain, ordinary woman by today's standards. Yet, her appearance and demeanor were pivotal to her story as a Soviet agent.
Elizabeth told her story of communist espionage activity before various congressional committees and testified as a government witness in the Rosenberg case. She managed to talk "McCall's" magazine into serializing her autobiography titled, "Out of Bondage." At first, they were leery of the former communist turned FBI informant until they spoke to FBI P.R. man Lou Nichols who gave the Bureau's approval. Amongst the lies she purported to McCalls was her self-description characterized in the headline of the June 1951 installment, "I Joined the Red Underground with the Man I Loved." In the article, she described herself as an ingenuous "college girl" despite the fact she was thirty when she met him.
In the curious case of Elizabeth Bentley, where twists and turns are the norm, as a government witness, Bentley had access to the protection of the government. In a little-known incident, the 20th century's prime mover and fixer, the infamous, gay, red-baiting Roy Cohn, came to her assistance after a beating by her live-in lover, John Wright. According to Olmsted, documented by Nicholas Von Hoffman in his seminal work, "Citizen Cohn" and an FBI memorandum dated May 13, 1952 contained in the FBI's file on Gregory Silvermaster, 65-14603-4417, Cohn told the FBI that Bentley's beating was, "the most serious problem he had faced since coming into the United States Attorney's office." As a chief witness in the William Remington case, the beating could, "ruin her career as a lecturer" (FBI memorandum from Agent Cleveland to SAC Alan Belmont, May 8, 1952, Bentley file, 134-135, no. serial), and could, "endanger the Brothman and Rosenberg convictions." The author writes, "Cohn told Elizabeth to entice Wright to New York under false pretenses. When he arrived, he was hit with the full force of the U.S. government. FBI agents whisked him to a meeting with two prosecutors and Special Agent John Danahy. U.S. Attorney Myles Lane told Wright "to get out of Bentley's life or else." He left Bentley alone.
On May 29, 1952, Elizabeth appeared before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee investigating Owen Lattimore and the Institute of Pacific Relations. McCarthy accused Lattimore of being a "top Russian spy." The Institute of Pacific Relations was accused of front activities, particularly aiding and abetting the "fall" of China.
As the anti-communist spotlight faded, so did Elizabeth's fortunes. In her later life, she taught classes at a reform school, publishing the school newspaper and avoiding the public spotlight. On November 18, 1963, at the age of fifty-five, she entered Grace New Haven Community Hospital. She was officially diagnosed with abdominal cancer but actually suffered from chronic alcoholism from years of self-abuse.
"Red Spy Queen" is an interesting, sad, twisted tale of one woman's political journey from fascism to communism to anti-communism and the human toll of political activism. It is an excellent read, an important story of a sad footnote in the history of the early cold war and that uniquely American obsession---anti-communism.
History with intrique intact.......2002-12-30
I was amazed that this book would be such a delight to read. Initially, the historical research is well narrated, maintaining the suspense, danger, and the confusion behind the real life espionage of Elizabeth Bentley. Kathryn Olmsted displays an enjoyable interest in the vocabulary of the time, and is not shy to weave a moral into the story, as lasciviousness trumps cleverness. This book is a great resource on the fascinating history of the puzzle called the "Red Scare". As the Russians open their archives, the truth can be sought from a new light. Kathryn Olmsted pieces together Elizabeth Bentley's life, exaggerations, and manipulations in the sordid web of spies testifying against spies amidst political ambition and posturing of J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Honestly, I couldnt put the book down.
Bentley book based on shaky sources........2002-11-13
This is a well written and informative book on Elizabeth Bentley and the ex-communist witnesses of the Red Scare period of the 1940s (and 1950s). Based on a rather narrow base of primary sources, while Olmsted appears to believe most of Bentley's fingering of communists, spies or otherwise, there is much still problematic in her story. She does not make the case that the "spies" posed any real threat to the security and stability of the country in the 1930s or during World War II, although some certainly existed and shared information, nuclear and otherwise, with the Soviety Union. Olmsted describes a most unstable woman, whose veracity is certainly questionable. And she underscores that spying ended with Bentley's public revelations at the end of World War II, long before the "McCarthy" Red Scare period of the early 1950s, as other historians have recently argued.

People's Histories.......2002-10-11
Minnesota Memories includes stories for all of us. Some are funny and some are inspiring. Although the author/editor wrote several of the most pleasurable stories, the most interesting aspect of the book is that she has encouraged average people to write stories about their own lives. Some of the stories are autobiography and some are history. Many of the stories took me back to experiences in my own life. Some made me cry. Most are of universal interest. These are real people.
She's done it again!.......2002-07-18
The Minnesota Memories series reminds me of the old PeeWee's Playhouse TV show. In every episode of PWP, the eponymous host would announce the word of the day, then instruct viewers to "scream real loud" whenever they heard the chosen word. Viewers would be amazed (and possibly irked) at how many times common words like "door", "more" or even "like" would crop up in the course of the show. It sometimes seemed that cosmic forces aligned to push the word of the day to the forefront. But what in heck does this all have to do with Minnesota Memories? Let me explain.
In MM1, the word "kickerino" appeared in more than one essay, written by more than one author. Why? Cosmic forces? Who knows? In MM2, the word of the day is "Odin". Odin, a tiny town by anyone's reckoning, accounts for more than its share of ink in this edition of Minnesota Memories. The Odin stories are not only compelling, but they allude to other, equally compelling tales. We all have stories, and publications like Minnesota Memories allow them to be heard and celebrated. Who knows? Perhaps something near and dear to you will be the "word of the day" in Minnesota Memories 3. If it is, you can count on me to scream real loud!
She Did It Again!.......2002-06-25
Joan Graham grandly succeeded with her sequel to Vol. I of Minnesota Memories. She remembered her first ski lesson so vividly that I laughed until I cried as she related the frozen tundra on which she stood, her attempt to be "cool," and shopping for that perfect outfit that would make her ski as well as Billy Kidd. Her book also includes memories by 34 others whose lives have been impacted by living or working in the North Star State. Let's hope Joan has the stamina and sales to continue collecting even more Minnesota Memories--it'll become a state treasure!
Rating the Best - Minnesota Memories 2.......2002-06-21
Minnesota Memories 2 was delightful! It holds your interest thoughout and each story is a special experience in itself.
As one who grew up in the midwest, I can relate so very well to everything expressed by those who contributed to its writing. It makes one realize, even after so many years, that what you experienced as a child perhaps more than a half century ago,was also shared by so many others. It brings the past so much closer than it has ever been before and you know there are many people out there who feel as you do. Thank you Joan Graham, for making it all possible!
American Memories.......2002-06-16
A charming look at growing up in the midwest - nostalgia with heart.

This book has been my bible.......2002-07-21
All the information I could want is contained in this book.
With every relocation I've made, this red book has been my steadfast guide and the first step in any move I make. Forget the American Express card, "don't leave home without it."
Great reference, if you understand the game.......2002-07-03
Headhunters get a lot of resumes sent to them from people looking for jobs. They throw most of them away. So it's only worth mailing resumes if you mail them to recruiters who really place people like you. That's the strength of this directory, because it has loads of indexes where you can find headhunters in the right industry, right state or near where you live. It also names individual recruiters and what they specialize in. The odds are still long, but at least you can get in front of relevant people. And that's the real value of this book. Interesting footnote: many headhunters use it themselves, suggesting that it's probably the reference of choice among the pros. The advice section at the front is pretty good too.
The Famous "Red Book" is the Who's Who of the Industry.......2002-01-24
This is the who's who of the executive recruiting industry. There is a lot of turnover in the search industry and this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date listing of executive recruiters out there. The indexes allow you to sort recruiters by industry and job functions that they specialize in so you can pinpoint the right ones for you. A CD ROM version of the database is available for an additional fee too.
Deceptive.......2001-10-31
While this is the book that has the information, If you want to get at it on the CD you have to pay $195.00. Just a little detail that was not mentioned anywhere until I purchased the book tried to install it.

Book Description
The films of Fritz Lang depict an entrapping, claustrophobic world in which people are controlled by larger forces. His overriding theme is the struggle against fate and against the traits of human nature that doom us.
His life and work spanned six decades of film history---from the silent era through the golden age of German Expressionism of the 1920s and the classic studio system in Hollywood to the rise of the international co-production. In Hollywood he worked for every major studio except Disney. He made blockbusters, modest B movies, and everything in between. Among his films are classics of German cinema---including Metropolis and M. In America he made some of the most notable crime movies (Fury), noir films (The Big Heat), and Westerns (The Return of Frank James) of the studio era. Despite the different time periods, nations, and genres in which he worked, his films remain stylistically consistent.
Lang (1890-1976), a notoriously difficult interviewee, granted relatively few interviews apart from short publicity exchanges in the promotion of his films. Fully aware of his public persona, he was a canny self-promoter who carefully constructed half-truths and myths about himself.
This fascinating collection covers his conversations about his life and his works over a period of forty years. They reveal how cinema for Lang was an intensely personal art. "For me," he said, "cinema is a vice. I love it intimately. I've often written that it is the art form of our century."

A Stereotype Shatters.......2006-10-26
This is a terrific entry in the U of Mississippi series of interviews with famous filmmakers.
The earliest interview comes from 1945, but the bulk of the interviews are from the Sixties and early Seventies, after Lang had retired from filmmaking. However, he hadn't retired from thinking about film. While his comments on his own works are very interesting, what amazed and pleasantly surprised me was that he was willing to talk about the New German Cinema of the Seventies, "Deep Throat," and the impact of TV on movies.
Fritz Lang has the reputation of being a one-dimensional martinet. However, the interviews collected here reveal a complex man with an unexpected breadth of interests. It leaves the reader wishing he could have known Fritz Lang and envying those who did.

Unemotional Chronicle.......2005-09-25
This is an excellent recounting of the events of a life, but it is largely unemotional. The horrors of the primary school are not fully documented, leaving the reader with the impression that it must not have been all THAT bad - it was horrific, of course, but we don't see enough examples to really feel sympathy. Additionally, we never learn many personal things about the author, such as how she feels about her deafness (although this probably results from her stunted emotional growth) and why she felt compelled to write the book.
It is a good book, however, and if it were not so difficult to track down I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject matter. But because of the controversy surrounding its first printing, "I Was #87" is expensive and hard to find. Upon finally obtaining it, some readers may feel as I did - that the effort was greater than the book warranted.
On Eagles' Wings.......2005-07-27
Anne Bolander suffered from congenital hearing loss which her paternal grandmother attributed to prenatal exposure to a certain medication. Anne and her twin brother, Peter, born in 1954 become part of a large family. Sadly, their mother dies in 1957 and Anne has trouble navigating in the hearing world. Unable to remain in preschool because of her hyperactive behavior and inability to hear directions, her father, stepmother and paternal grandparents are ill-equipped to meet her needs.
Misdiagnosed as retarded in October 1959 at Johns Hopkins, Anne then serves a five-year sentence at the Stoutamyre School. The "school" sounds like a medieval torture chamber; the children are not educated in academics nor taught self-care. Margie Stoutamyre, the school's director made, in the words of Anne's co-author, Adair N. Renning, Nurse Wretched Ratched of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" infamy look like Mary Poppins. Dickensian workhouses pale in comparison to this place.
Children were beaten by Margie at the drop of a hat; if one so much as looked at someone else being beaten, they, too received a beating. Belts, whips and a board with holes were used; children could only use the bathroom three times a day and even then Margie allotted them a certain amount of time which she monitored with a stopwatch. Illnesses did not exempt one from beatings. In one memorable passage, Anne was forced to eat another child's vomit simply because she saw him vomit at the table.
In addition to the beatings, children were locked in the root cellar for days; kept in a windowless seclusion room and even strapped to a chair. Anne Bolander literally survived in hell. Mealtimes were rigid affairs where one had to eat in a certain way and keep a straight spine at all times. Failure to do so resulted in beatings. Anne describes how some children were literally beaten to death and she even recounts how she saw a boy being pounded to death simply because he had diarrhea.
Her grandmother was the only person who was kind to her. In 1964 she takes Anne out of Stoutamyre for a few days to enjoy the World's Fair. By 1965 Anne's father and stepmother have her discharged. Anne, in her words has exchanged one Margie for another. Pat, her stepmother treated her in the same brutal and erratic fashion that Margie did. The only girl in a houseful of brothers, Anne concluded that being male was the way to survive and that "love" meant "being beaten" because she had been told by Pat how much Margie "loved" her.
The one bright spot in her life during that period was the 1965-1966 school year she spent at St. Mary's. Kind, loving nuns nurtured her and helped heal much of the harm that had been inflicted upon her. Sadly, she is forced to leave the place because her father has been transferred to another state.
Anne's secondary and adult years are marked by social unawareness. She is easily mislead by those who are not well meaning and this pattern of gullible trusting follows her into the workplace. She thinks the nickname "Retard" is an honor because she wanted a nickname "like the other kids," not realizing the stigma attached. She steals gifts so as to gain popularity and is willing to do anything to have people like her. While understandable, the results are no less devastating.
Anne graduates from high school in 1974 at the age of 20. She spends a summer in a hospital training program at a college in N.Y., but finds that the adjustment was more than she was then able to make. Anne exceeds her father's low expectations of her by not only graduating, but buying her own car and paying for the insurance herself after taking driving lessons. She spends the next number of years living in her own mobile home and with friends, some of whom use her.
Luckily, Anne meets angels, such as Ruth and Glenn, who help her navigate tricky social terrain. Ruth encourages her to fix herself up; Glenn tells her what certain obscenities mean so she will no longer fall prey to the rude and mean spirited jokes her co-workers play. In time, Anne learns these things.
Setbacks occur, such as when Anne is raped by her father in 1979. She spends December of 1980 in a hospital, sorting out the problems in her life, starting with Stoutamyre. By the time she is released in early 1981, Anne is ready to put her life together. She moves out of one bad household where she was being monetarily exploited; becomes active in the deaf community and reconnects with her youngest brother. In March of 1984, her father remarries and Anne has by then realized that with the exception of her youngest brother, she has to cut her losses where her family is concerned. The final blow was when her father and stepmother argued over her brother's surgery when her father said he was not going to spend any money on his son as he was no longer a child.
A hard, intense and much needed book, Anne is the voice of inspiration. She has survived in hell and, like the phoenix risen up out of the ashes. This book makes me think of the passage from Scripture and related song, "On Eagles' Wings."
You're a wonderful person Anne!.......2004-06-01
I am not a fan of reading books, but the title of this book caught my attention. I could not put this book down once I started reading it and finished it over a weekend. I recommended this book to my entire family and I hope everyone gets a chance to read it. I was so moved on how Anne survived through all of the horrible obstactles she faced. It is sad to think that all of her "supposeable friends" during that time in her life took advantage of her the way they did when she needed them the most. I feel like I know her and forever I will think of Anne. I wish her the best and I hope the future for her is the most rewarding, for she has earned it!!
A 5 star story that will change your life forever.......2002-10-20
I was #87 is a true story, neither my daughter or I could put this book down until we finished it. It is about a little girl who was severely abused and also diagnosed as being retarded when she was actually deaf and of above average intelligence. The determination and survival of this child is so riviting and also inspiring at the same time. It makes you thankful for what we do have in this life. You will realize that the day to day things we might think of as obstacles or problems are so trivial. I would reccomend this book to everyone. There is a limied supply since it is out of print but it is available through the library also.
great book.......2001-05-30
I was so touched when I read Anne's book. She went through so much and I cannot tell you how brave I think she is. I wish her all the best. Thank-you Anne. Carole
