Book Description
Natural and social sciences seem very often, though usually only implicitly, to hedge their laws by
ceteris paribus clauses - a practice which is philosophically very hard to understand because such clauses seem to render the laws trivial and unfalsifiable. After early worries the issue is vigorously discussed in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of mind since ca. 15 years.
This volume collects the most prominent philosophers of science in the field and presents a lively, controversial, but well-integrated, highly original and up-to-date discussion of the issue. It will be the reference book in the coming years concerning
ceteris paribus laws.

Golf is often viewed as a perfect metaphor for life, but management strategist and lifelong devotee David Hurst sees an even more profound connection to business. In Learning from the Links, he explores the relationship to explain how a real understanding of the game can ultimately prove beneficial in the workplace. With a true disciple's grasp of the physical and mental intricacies involved in playing any round, and an experienced consultant's eye toward the physical and mental intricacies involved in leading any corporation, Hurst offers a unique look at the "complex systems" in both activities and the consequences of adapting knowledge from one to improve performance in the other. "Golf," he writes, "is a replica of the systemic way in which we may exercise control over the trajectories of our own lives as well as those of our organizations." In 18 chapters designed to roughly mirror the play on a regulation course, he lays out a provocative theory for turning this notion into action with the help of graphic anecdotes from golf, germane examples from business, and compelling findings from experts in such disparate fields as homeostasis and artificial intelligence. Perhaps only a passionate golfer can really appreciate his evocative descriptions of holes like the spectacular par-4 18th at Harbor Town on Hilton Head, but anyone should find it worth the time to spend a round pondering Hurst's thoughtful concepts and their implications. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
For the first time, a seasoned business executive and avid golfer combines these two passions to explore what makes for top performance in each field. Management consultant David K. Hurst explores compelling links relating the two activities to explain clearly what every manager who plays golf may feel only intuitively: that there is a deep systemic connection between them. For on the tee, as in the boardroom, a player can't just hit and hope -- he or she must continually think ahead, contemplate multiple scenarios, and consider the downside of every decision. And then everything depends on execution. In Learning from the Links, Hurst clarifies muddled thinking in both management and golf: he deals squarely with the challenge of implementing a game plan and seeing it through.
Hurst takes to task the current "head-down" instructional model used to teach golf and management. He addresses the huge gulf between knowing what to do in a given situation and knowing how to do it. This chasm is an ever-present hazard both on the course and in an organization: it keeps people from solving their problems and achieving their goals. By examining golfers' and managers' struggles for improvement, Hurst shows us why complex systems are so hard to change and how to set about changing them -- systematically.
Using the latest thinking from fields as diverse as neuroscience, artificial intelligence, art, and anthropology, Hurst's primary purpose is to help his readers make sense of their own experience -- to help them learn more effectively. His practical advice is profusely illustrated with examples from both golf and management, allowing the reader to move back and forth between his or her experiences in both activities. Part business management book, part strategy guide, these are more than just lessons for one's game or one's office: these are lessons for life.

5 under par.......2002-06-19
What do golf and management have in common? David Hurst in his latest book identifies the similarities between these 2 complex dynamic systems. Those who have read Hurst first book, Crisis & Renewal, will detect a common theme. That book described the parallels between the life cycles of natural ecosystems and those of organizations. Both books make systems thinking accessible to managers by employing analogues: ecology in the first book and golf in this latest effort. Since more managers are golfers than amateur ecologists Learning from the Links will no doubt have a broader appeal.
Hurst mission is to make complex systems theory (a close relative of chaos theory) accessible to managers; accessible in ways that affect their thinking and their actions. This is no small task. One can easily fall into the trap of being overly theoretical and academic, or going to the other extreme and dumbing-down the theory so much that its insights and relevance are lost. Hurst does neither. He uses the golf analogy to very effectively draw out actionable insights from complex systems theory for managers. Stories relating the experiences of golfers and managers are used to illustrate the points, but the book is not a series of anecdotes. The stories are artfully crafted to convey the messages in the underlying theory while at the same time making the book an enjoyable read.
Should managers who are not golfers read this book? Being an unaccomplished golfer I think not. The golf analogy is a core element and allows the reader to related, at a visceral level, to the messages in the book. The possible exception would be prospective readers who are not golfers but have an abiding interest in systems theory. Those looking for simplistic solutions to complex problems will not find them in this book. It is for the serious reader who wants a richer appreciation of the systemic relationships that result in exceptional performance, both on the golf course and in business.
Book Description
The distinctive New Mexico style of Southwest cooking. From a celebrated eatery.
Customer Reviews:
If I'm not eating at the Rancho, this cookbook is the next best thing! .......2006-07-03
Have visited this restaurant many times while in the Santa Fe, New Mexico area. This little cookbook captures very well the essence of the restaurant and traditional northern New Mexican cuisine. No trip to Santa Fe is complete without the short drive into the beautiful countryside to enjoy a meal at the Rancho de Chimayo. I have never been disappointed when trying a recipe from the book. The good news is that the restaurant now sells bottles of their own salsa, red chile sauce, green chile sauce, and adovada sauce. We load up on these everytime we are there, and use them when making the recipes from the book - so easy! The sauces can be obtained through mail order as well. Check out their website. Hope you will enjoy reading and using this book as much as I have!
dissapointing coming from these authors.......2006-05-13
I could not wait to get this- I love most of their books. But it had few recipes, and what was there was nothing I did not have in many other books.
The book says on the cover it is about traditional cooking of New Mexico. Then has recipes like fajitas, which they even say came from Texas fairly recently. What is there is fine, but I suppose I expected more traditional native american dishes that had influenced New Mexico, not what I would consider to be typical Tex-Mex.
The essence of the Land of Enchantment.......2006-04-12
This book is a 'must have' for anyone who wants to replicate the cooking of northern New Mexico. If you have ever traveled to New Mexico, especially to Santa Fe or Taos, and marveled at the spritely seasoning and traditional food preparations, you may have tried to duplicate those flavors at home. Don't try it with conventional Tex-Mex cookbooks. This is a different animal.
You need the Rancho de Chimayo Cookbook and you need to get good chiles from New Mexico (I order from www.thechileshop.com). There are not a lot of recipes, but the ones that are there are the real enchilada.
After living in Albuquerque for 8 years, I tried many options for cooking the red chile and green chile enchiladas that are so essential to the New Mexico cocina. The recipes in this book are the first that tasted right -- and taste right every single time. Try it, you'll like it!
Taste the "land of enchantment.".......2001-02-13
The authors of The Rancho de Chimayo cookbook DO love New Mexico. The sub-title states: "The Traditional Cooking of New Mexico," and the cookbook lives up to that statement. The first 48 pages gives history of New Mexico through native foods, folk-lore, spirituality and settlers bringing their own norms of food production. Unfortunately, you will not find the flavor of New Mexico in restaurants outside of N.M. I lived in N.M for 10 years. If you have ever been charmed by N.M.'s food & beauty you can re-create this experience through this cookbook. Try it!
Disappointing as best.......1999-02-13
The authors produced a much better book when they compiled The Border. Rancho de Chimayo has very few recipes, some of which call for Velveeta of all things, and the warnings about drinking and driving in the Cocktail chapter, are annoying.
This restaurant may be the darling of the New York food writers, but NY food writers don't know anything about Southwestern food.
Spend your money elsewhere.

The old "direct and control" model of management no longer applies in today's business environment. To be effective, managers must capitalize on group dynamics and build effective work processes. The authors present a new model of facilitation that focuses on getting work clone -- the key element to success.
Customer Reviews:
It gave me EVERYTHING I needed to facilitate!.......2004-04-24
This book held my hand, walked me through what I needed...I KNEW I had to somehow "get" my team to work together, but HOW? Weaver and Farrell gave me a model as well as I loved the "quick fix" section, which I went to right away. There they knew just what are the common areas that keep people from being effective on a team and most importantly what in the world to do about them
Read this book. It is the best on facilitation that I have seen.
Excellent practical guide to the art of facilitating.......1997-11-26
This book is an excellent practical guide for assisting managers in accomplishing work through their people. As the manager's role becomes more of a facilitative one, this book can help individuals learn useful skills they can pull off the pages and put immediately into practice. The abundant tables and figures clearly illustrate the principles. The Quick Fix guide at the end of the book offers pragmatic solutions to common problems at work. I recommend this book to all my clients!! Dennis S. Reina, Ph.D. Principal, Chagnon & Reina Associates, Inc. Organizational Development Consultants dsreina@pwshift.com

The Best Guide to Calming Upset Customers.......2007-07-06
This is a very simple, short book, and that's good--unlike most business books, it doesn't fill its pages with unnecessary fluff to pad the page count. The exercises are fun and easy, and this book is highly recommended for anyone that has to deal with customers.
Easy to Implement.......2005-09-07
This book is easy to read, easy to understand and easy to put into action.
Book Description
The title and content of this book describe the numerous surprises the author has had with metastatic prostate cancer, but the title is also literally true because it describes his situation during innumerable digital inspections of his prostate gland

Product Description
Anyone affected by cancer will receive a feeling of hope from A GOOD DAY ANYWAY by Dave Massey. He started writing poems during his second battle with cancer as a gift for his daughter, and found a unique way to share his encouraging story of survival. This inspiring poetic journal is sure to have a positive impact on others who are looking for their miracle. Dave Masseys poems recall the pathos, fear and deep appreciation of life that cancer brings. He conveys a lighthearted optimism without trivializing the circumstances. The moments he describes will be recognized by all of us who see or experience any severe illness. --- Jayne Gurtler, MD, FACP Oncology and Internal Medicine A GOOD DAY ANYWAY is true and sincere. It should be a staple in every Oncology clinic, office, and center. Cancer survivors need an honest, personal representation from someone who has been there. Dave nailed it here. Bravo! --- Christian McEvoy President of the Challenge America Foundation
Customer Reviews:
Fun Read!!!!.......2007-10-06
This little book is so much fun, it makes it even better that I know one half of this amazing couple, but it truly does make light of a terrible disease, I have shared it with so many people since reading it. Being a health care provider I know this should be a staple bedside companion in any medical facility.
Inspired.......2007-10-01
Dave Massey's inspired poetry reminds everybody that no matter how bad it gets it is better to make the best of it. His example of positive thinking is at the essence of the human spirit and what we can achieve when we've got our minds right. I would recommend this book to anyone going through cancer, but especially to everybody else, because there is no time for negative energy- it is a waste and a detriment to our society.
Encouragment for the cancer patient and their loved ones........2007-10-01
I bought one of the first copies of A Good Day Anyway. My review has been a long time coming. Dave Massey is my son. I have read his poems over and over for the past 10 years. Each time they bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joys, he won two battles with cancer. Tears of pride, he wrote most of them when he was barely able to hold a pen or pencil. Tears of thanks, to the Doctors and Nurses who took care of him. A Good Day Anyway is not just beneficial for those dealing with cancer but for the loved ones, family, and friends that are also involved. I have made copies of these poems to share with those who themselves or their family member are battling cancer. I highly recommend that everyone read this little book as it is encouraging to know that someone out there beat the odds and became a better person because he had cancer.
Neighbors by Chance, Friends by Choice.......2007-09-30
Dave Massey built the house my family and I now live in -- literally. I met Dave in 1996 when we bought the house next door to his, a house he had built himself. In my review title, I use the words "Neighbors by chance," but I must confess that I don't believe in coincidence; I believe it was nothing short of the hand of God that caused our lives to intersect. My title should more accurately read "Neighbors by God's providence, friends by choice," but that doesn't sound quite as catchy... ;o)
Shortly after we moved in next door to Dave, he shared with us about his experience in his first battle with cancer, and we had an instant "beyond-neighbor" connection. My own mom fought and won a fierce battle with cancer in 1988. That being the case, we were all stunned when Dave was diagnosed with cancer a second time. My mom was also diagnosed a second time in 1998, at which time Dave shared his poems with us to give to her. They were incredibly encouraging.
Having had the privilege of first reading these wonderful poems almost a decade ago, I was delighted to hear that Dave had them published into this special book. It is my prayer that these poems will be as much an encouragement and blessing to others as they have been to my own family. God has blessed Dave with optimism, courage, and strength. I pray every reader of his book will take those things away with them to be victorious in his or her own battles in life.
Information for all.......2007-09-24
A Good Day Anyway is an inspiring book for people who are battling cancer, but it is also helpful to the rest of us who need to make sense of it all. I can't stop reading the poems--sometimes I learn about a cancer patient's feelings, other times I learn about the confusing medical terminology, other times I learn about the quantity of time a cancer patient spends getting treated. Mostly I feel like I'm learning about how a man with an iron will not only to survive, but also thrive, thinks.
