Book Description
The issue of ownership is a vital one in international trade and one which is barely covered by existing international conventions. Although domestic rules may be familiar to local businesses, practical difficulties and legal uncertainties occur when foreign businesses try to ascertain the rules regulating ownership abroad and when the goods are being shipped by the seller to the buyer. This unique comparative study of domestic laws in 19 major trading nations serves as a valuable guide and reference book. Its in-depth analysis of the legal issues arising in connection with transfer of ownership will provide invaluable assistance to practitioners, lawyers and anyone drafting or interpreting international sale contracts.

Betty Crocker is on the health bandwagon. Not one for fads, Betty sensibly bases this 175-recipe cookbook on the Food Guide Pyramid guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and many other medical and nutrition professional organizations. You learn tips for cutting down on fat and cholesterol, understanding the different kinds of fat, and making smart food choices for heart health. The idea is to reduce fat by making ingredient substitutions and small alterations, but not making drastic changes. The recipes are varied and creative and don't resemble "diet food": Ginger Shrimp Kabobs, Vegetable Potstickers, Stuffed Veal Chops with Cider Sauce, Vegetable and Ham Jambalaya, Curried Chicken and Nectarines, Caribbean Fish Salad, and Thai Shrimp and Rice Noodle Nests. The desserts include Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake with Raspberry Topping (only 20 percent fat!), Blueberry-Lime Torte (about 15 percent fat), and Double Chocolate-Date Cake (about 25 percent fat). Recipes are labeled with symbols indicating "low-calorie," "low-fat," "moderate-fat," "low-cholesterol," and "moderate-cholesterol," so you can choose how far you want to go. Each recipe has a hefty amount of nutritional information: calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and diet exchanges. Cooks who love knowing what the dishes should look like will enjoy the 45 mouth-watering color photos. --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful cookbook.......2007-04-19
My husband had quadruple bypass in January of this year. I started looking for low fat-low cholesterol cookbooks! I purchased this cookbook along with a few others, and this one is by far our favorite. The meals are fast, taste great, and use ingredients you usually have on hand. We have been cooking new recipes out of this book frequently and haven't found one that we didn't like. We bought the book as a gift for friends and they love it too. When we have people over for dinner, they do not even realize they are eating a healthy meal, as every recipe has great flavor. Definitely a star!
wonderful.......2007-03-15
after receiving this book, I was able to control my cholestrol, not that it was totally out of control, but being told it is slightly high I needed to change my diet. Betty Crocker has been around along time so it is a trustworthy and household name.
Great reference book as well as cookbook.......2007-01-13
I was recently diagnosed with the "lower it or we're putting you on medicine" type of cholesterol so along with internet research, I bought this book. I'm a big fan of cooking and this has a TON of great ideas for cooking. I was surprised that things I thought were on the "no no" list were listed in several of the recipes as partial ingredients. I was very excited to learn I could still have cheese (in moderation!)
The book categorizes all of the recipes with "low calorie" "low fat" and "low cholesterol." While not every recipe is all three there is enough variety that if you're in the mood for a little cholesterol, there's a recipe that's low cal and low fat to satisfy you (and vice-versa). It also gives you pictuers for things you're not exactly sure about -- like just how peaked the egg whites need to be when making meringue.
Better Advice Than Recipes.......2007-01-09
I've had this book for several months, and I haven't yet prepared a recipe from it; however, I've referenced it countless times. If you have high or even borderline cholesterol problems -- even if your cholesterol was fine last time you had it checked, this book will help you stay on the rails. It is invaluable for such things as the five highest fiber cereals. Lists of veggies that are filled with folic acid. Foods to get your LDL down and your HDL up. And one of these days, I will prepare a recipe, too.
Cookbook review.......2006-11-07
I have found several receipes in the cookbook that I have cooked and my family has enjoyed. I also had my mom try some and she ordered the cookbook for herself. The only thing that I would like to see would be to have alternates for people cooking for less and for people that don't tolerate a lot of spices.

My Years with General Motors
ASIN: 0471330256 |
Book Description
In its 104-year history, Lincoln Electric Company has managed to sustain its status as the world's leader in welding technology despite intense domestic and foreign competition. The company's success can be attributed to founder James Lincoln, who began adopting principles of management that empowered workers and allowed the company to change rapidly to take advantage of new opportunities. This book shows you how to duplicate these pioneering ideas and follow the brilliance of the Lincoln management system. The results of this system include happier customers, more prosperous workers, and richly rewarded shareholders.
Joseph Maciariello uncovers Lincoln's approach to management in a systematic manner and demonstrates why the company has been so effective for over a century. You'll discover how Lincoln employs a mutually reinforcing set of management systems that creates a boost in overall performance. When these systems are described and understood in their entirety, you'll see how the company's sustained success is due to its natural development of agility. You'll findout how this agility is connected to its executive leadership, management systems, and cultural environment. And you'll learn how to utilize these principles and techniques in your own company to obtain similar results.
The management system detailed in this book has helped Lincoln Electric:
* Obtain net sales of over $1.1 billion in 1998
* Grab 400f the U.S. market for welding machines and products
* Double the average return on stock- holder equity in the metals industry
* Provide production workers with an average salary that is twice as much as the industry median
By implementing this system, you can also experience these strong financial returns for shareholders, an increase in wages for workers, higher productivity, and much more!
"Lasting Value is that rarest of books: a "why to" book, a "what to" book, and a "how to" book- its examples deal with manufacturing companies and blue-collar workers. But the lessons have particular force for the new job facing management: building organizations of knowledge workers who perform and who create lasting value."
-Peter F. Drucker
"In today's world of quarterly expectations and Wall Street's praise for major restructuring, Lasting Value successfully illustrates that long-term shareholder value can occur when corporations are truly customer and employee driven with the highest of motives."
-Donald F. Hastings
Chairman Emeritus, Lincoln Electric Company
"Worthington was founded on the lifelong principles rooted in the Golden Rule and today it represents one of the strongest employee-employer partnerships in American business. We are proud of this important foundation for our company, as it has provided us with lasting value."
-John H. McConnell
Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Worthington Industries
"This book should be on every manager's bookshelf and be required reading at everybusiness school."
-F. Kenneth Iverson
Chairman Emeritus, NUCOR Corporation
"Joe Maciariello's in-depth description and detailed analysis of the Lincoln Electric Company will allow managers (and others) to revisit the powerful lessons this company has offered. Lasting Value is a valuable and practical contribution that should be welcomed by managers everywhere."
-Christopher A. Bartlett

Book Description
We start life as little babies, then grow to little kids, to bigger kids, to young adults and on to the years called "Golden." This book traces the life of one small kid growing up in one small town during the grim days of the Great Depression. There are no spectacular events, just many small happenings of people and events forming the life of this little village. The book is based on recollections perhaps enhanced by years of watching television and the movies. There may be some romanticizing and embellishment but the main course of the story holds true to life as it was. The people and events ramble a bit and hopscotch around among the years, but it all comes together at the end. Young folks will be bemused and hopefully enlightened. Older folks will sit back, sigh and mumble "those were the days"-"good old" or not.

A Walk Down Memory Lane (Hope Street).......2006-03-26
I was born on Hope Street and lived in Springdale for most of my
life. Al Michaud brings back many wonderful memories of growing
up. "A Twig Grows in Springdale" is a good read for anyone who
grew up in a small town or wished that they did.
You get the feeling that we were richer then, with or without
Con Lund's dimes.
Thanks for the memories! Al.
Marilyn Seaman Ritchie
A Good Read.......2004-07-19
Reading Al Michaud's book of reminiscences, A Twig Grows in Springdale, is like taking a trip backward in time. The time was the Great Depression, which coincided with his early boyhood, but in spite of the lack of money-possibly because of it-his was a happy boyhood.
The place was a small New England town, Springdale, where we meet the colorful characters who peopled his world. Money may have been in short supply, but there was always enough for food, and though threadbare, clothes enough to keep them warm. And to add to the richness of a life of simple pleasures in Springdale were the years during the polio epidemic when the family spent the summers with friends on their farm in the mountains. There more adventures helped bend the Twig, and the reader is the lucky spectator. A good read.
a Crazy Quilt of memories.......2004-07-13
Rebeccasreads recommends A TWIG GROWS IN SPRINGDALE as a treasure trove of stories, rather like your Grandmother's hope chest. Take it down, open it up anywhere & travel back to a time when the future is a distant thing & where everyday life is so much more important.
Like an ancient family photo album, Al Michaud fills his with remembrances & impressions, written in snapshots & vignettes, some a hundred or so words, others a couple of pages long, penned in a storytelling rhythm, of a time when sliced bread was a novelty, coal was king, homework unknown, all immigrants wanted to learn English & become Americans, & Springdale, a small southern New England town, was the center of his universe.
A simple patchwork of ordinary things.......2004-06-19
A Twig grows in Springdale is in the author's own words, "A simple patchwork of ordinary things, ordinary people and tiny ordinary happenings." It is the recollections of childhood during a simpler time- a time when money was scarce, family values were strong and our freedoms were threatened. Author Al Michaud takes us on a sentimental journey to the days of mothers in aprons with flour covered hands, fathers searching for work and kids who used their imaginations to create worlds of fantasy and excitement.
Each chapter is a snippet of life during the great Depression from the author's point of view with lovable characters that everyone can relate to. The people and happenings in Springdale helped to shape the lives of countless children who look back with fond memories of "Days gone by."
A wonderful book of memories for grandparents to read to their grandchildren or for those in their golden years to be reminded of the "Good Old Days." Teachers would find this book helpful in relating life in the thirties and forties to students who live in an age of computers, video games and fast food. Each chapter is a story in itself making it a nice light read for a sunny afternoon.

Nostalgia-Something We Seem To Crave.......2004-06-07
Why is it that when we reach our 50s and beyond there is a certain longing for the past? Perhaps, this nostalgic craving is due to our desire to slow down time.
Eviatar Zerubavel, a cognitive sociologist at Rutgers University, in his book Social Mindscape, made the following observation: "we all live in remembrance environments and mnemonic communities. These mental landscapes, constructed from shared feeling about the past, determine how we think about ourselves and our place in history."
In other words, people will come to know us by the memories we share with others and in turn we shall know ourselves.
It is with this in mind that I was able to appreciate first time novelist Al Michaud's A Twig in Springdale.
Using short literary descriptive sketches or vignettes, Michaud narrates his many fond memories he has of growing up during the time of the depression years in the small village of Springdale, Connecticut.
We learn about the schools the author attended and the teachers who had a made deep and lasting impressions. It was a time when male teachers were a rarity, and as he states: "teaching was rigid, warm, educational and productive."
Various ailments would lead to the usage of such cure all medications as Vicks Vapor Rub or Chicken soup. People were not immune from tragedies that resulted in death such as trolley accidents, appendicitis, pneumonia, car wrecks, and fires. However, they did not seem to be big events, as life seemed to go on without any lasting impression, even when one the author's schoolmates was crushed to death by a steam roller in the school yard-"We watched in silence. The police came. The ambulance came. Mr. McCall rang the bell and we all went to class."
You were not too concerned about the latest in clothing fashions, electronic gadgets, or the endless "goodies" children today enjoy, as money was scarce, you just had to make do with whatever you had.
Although Michaud's writing focuses on memorabilia of life during the depression years, his personal reflections will surely bring back memories for those of us who were born after during the 40s and 50s, as is the case with myself.
His style is straight- forward and at times sentimental coming across as a very human and down to earth individual.
Readers will be pulled in from the very first few pages and I am sure they will find a bit of their own "Springdale," wherever they may have grown up.

Customer Reviews:
Charles Henry Veil.......2006-04-11
[This review is based on the hardcover edition published by Orion Books, First edition, 1993]
Charles Henry Veil's chief claim to fame is his recovering the body of Gen. John Reynolds after he had been killed during the early fighting on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He went on to serve in the First U.S. Cavalry for the rest of the war, and then in the Arizona Territory until 1871. After his army days, Veil was involved in farming and mining around Phoenix for most of the rest of his life. These memoirs are mainly concerned with his army experiences during the war and out west.
Born in Scalp Level, PA, in 1842, Veil joined the army in 1861. He was Reynolds's orderly when the Union general was shot and killed in McPherson's Woods by a rebel sharpshooter, and helped remove his body from the field (often later when he related the story he claimed he did it alone). The death of Reynolds, commander of First Corps, was a great loss to the Union cause, some equating it to Stonewall Jackson's death and loss to the Confederacy. Veil finished out the war with the First U.S. Cavalry, after which he was shipped to Arizona in 1866. Many of his duties there seemed to involve capturing deserters; once he shot and killed two deserters with one bullet. Charged with incompetence and misconduct (the last of a sexual nature) - not a word of which enters the memoirs - he was honorably discharged in 1871 when the army was cutting down on its forces. Engaged not very successfully in mining for a number of years, after his wife died in 1891 he returned to Pennsylvania, pretty much broke. He died there in 1910.
Veil's memoirs are fairly routine and do not reveal much information. He is vague regarding specifics: dates, locations, names all go missing, replaced by textbook generalities. "The road we were on led to Yellow Tavern." That's it, no more information given. His later career came under a fog of moral ambiguity, which he refuses to acknowledge. Other than adding a helpful introduction, editor Herman Viola's presence is hardly felt, and that's a shame. Charles Veil might have been a witness to Reynolds's death at Gettysburg and even killed two men with one discharge from his gun, but these memoirs don't add up to much that is substantial.

A good compilation of papers.......2000-10-22
This book offers a general analysis of development strategies from a comparative standpoint. Latin American and Asian cases have been compared and the outcomes of this analysis reveal an excelent review of what has happened in those countries. However, this book was published before the Asian financial crisis and the data and conclusions seem quite outdated. The price is a bit high, so if you have a chance, try to check it out at your library before placing your order.

Book Description
Box of Mustaches is the powerful, true story of identical twin brothers and how they coped with their motherÂ's descent into madness.
At first, Stanley and Jimmy Evans thought their mother was normal, but they soon discovered that her twisted views and mood swings were a result of her schizophrenia. And the mental illness was making her more dangerous by the moment. Their journey took them from orphanages to the television studio of a televangelist to a front-yard shooting that would liberate them from their nightmare. The fabled Box of Mustaches they pined for was really a fake facial hair kit advertised in comic books, but also their metaphor for the absurdity of adult life thrust upon them at a young age. Interlaced with shocking drama and dark humor, Box of Mustaches is an absorbing tale of survival. It is also a satirical look at the cynical, sex-charged, American culture of the Â`70s.

Comedy with a Dark Edge.......2006-06-12
They say a lot of the very best comedy comes out of tragedy, that people laugh so they don't cry. "Box of Moustaches" is a no holds barred revealing biography of a very funny and talented man I worked with on "Talk Soup". Whether he became funny in spite of the difficulties he dealt with growing up with his twin brother in a household with a crazy mother or whether these events shaped him and made him the amusing writer he is today as a way of dealing with trouble is a argument best made over a glass of cognac and cigars. The fact is this book is a very interesting read. Yes, there are many dark moments. But there are also some very funny moments that are exploited to their fullest comic extent. It's not your standard Bobsey Twins novel, that's for sure. No, this story is real. As in real good.
Box is chockful of nuts.......2005-01-25
I hate whiny "woe is me" books written by people who want emotional handouts. Give me an emotionally powerful yet funny journey and that's what you get with "Box of Mustaches". Not only can read about his mom Nutty Nora but other characters like Eldy and the Gas-O-Mat and "Crisco Marie". Mr. Evans writes books like Ray Davies writes songs. Dickens would have given his last beer to write like this.
A hilarious look at a sad childhood.......2005-01-19
There is no question that the childhood of Stan Evans and his twin brother was by today's standards completely dysfunctional and often abusive. Life with a certifiable mother can never be easy, but the author manages to find humor in even the most heartbreaking situations. Told with mattter of fact candor and plenty of laughs this is one memoir on the dysfunctional childhood that looks for no pity.
sharp and witty, not cloying and pretentious.......2004-04-18
There seems to be a fashion for memoirs from authors who had brutal and bizarre upbringings or early life experiences. The problem with many of these, however, is that they are cloying, pretentious, or both. One apt example is "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," which would more accurately be titled "A Mawkish Work of Staggering Pretentiousness." Evans avoids this trap by writing simply and straightforwardly, but with elegance, poignance, and wit. He doesn't wear his travails like a badge of honor or feel the need to inform readers that he is consciously shunning post-modern, self-referential prose and condescending to write a mere traditional memoir. He skips the self-aggrandizing nonsense and just writes a damn funny, touching book.
A gripping, funny account of surviving a difficult childhood.......2004-02-16
This is a brutally honest, sometimes sad, often absurdly comical account of growing up (or attempting to) amidst constant turmoil and outright insanity. Evans brings you into the harrowing world of his childhood and adolescence. And despite the emotional rawness of the book, it is a surprisingly easy read. His ability to find any morsel of humor even in the most bizarre and dire circumstances has clearly served him well, both in surviving his tumultuous youth and in his work as a comedy writer.
