All you need to know (if you have the background).......2005-07-03
Like all the small handbooks in the DK series, Moi Ali's Effective Public Relations is a summary of the field. It's well-presented and easy to follow and covers traditional PR (not more modern techniques such as stunt marketing or stealth marketing).
It wouldn't be enough to get you started in the PR business, but it's a useful refresher if you once had a course in college, or a helpful adjunct for professional marketers who work with PR counsel.

A wonderful little 5x7 pocket guide to effective public relations!.......2006-12-17
This little book is packed with important information any small business or nonprofit should be aware of and use. And its price is less than what you will pay for a movie matinee special on a Saturday afternoon. While this book is small and short (only 72 pages), it covers all the basics for (1) getting your business known by potential clients and customers, (2) enhancing your business' reputation, and (3) helping with damage control when your business faces a crisis or problem. The print inside the book is small, so there is lots covered on each page.
The book includes four chapters:
1. Understanding Public Relations
2. Developing PR Skills
3. Working with the Media
4. Producing Publicity
The chapters and pages are highly formatted in order to pack a lot of information into the book. There are many pictures and diagrams in the book so it is not a boring treatise on the basics of PR. If you are looking for a publication on PR that you plan to read in an afternoon laying in bed under an electric blanket while snow falls outdoors, then this book is probably not for you. However, if you are responsible for the PR aspect of your business' marketing program and you are in the process of putting together a written PR plan and implementing that plan, then definitely get this book. 5 stars!

Easy,Tasty, Healthful & Variety Too !.......2003-04-15
I find the only time I am really successful eating healthfully is when I have a simple, good tasting eating plan that fits into my lifetstyle. I was raised on FOOD so a dry grilled chicken breast and plainly dressed salad greens just doesn't do it for me. But leaving the house at 7am returning around 7pm I find it too difficult to research, plan and prepare more interesting dishes. If you enjoy being involved in the food you eat rather than just scarfing down whatever fast-food or prepared item is around then this book should be great for you too. The low-fat, low-sodium and super quick cleanup are great bonuses. 95% of the meals I've tried so far have been really good. Don't expect the richness of a gourmet meal - you just won't get that with low-fat, low-sodium cooking. But having said that what I love about these dishes is that the ingredients and flavors are complex enough to make them fun to prepare and very satisfying to eat. Finally the built-in portion control facilitates easy dieting as well. Great job.
the 300-calorie one-dish meal cookbook.......2001-01-06
this is a great book. i just love it. it is very simple and directions are very clear. i and my husband have both found most of the receipes to our liking and surprisingly very tasty! I would highly recommend it and have just now purchased Ms. Hughes other book (the 1200 calorie a day cookbook).
A great place to start if you are counting calories........2000-07-07
This book would be better if it had pictures of any of the dishes, the only picture is on the cover, also most of the dishes are almost exactly the same. If you don't like green or red peppers or cumin I don't suggest you buy this book!
If you want to eat healthier, this is the cookbook for you!.......1999-10-09
We switched to a low fat diet because of a family history of heart disease. This cookbook made the transition effortless. We have tried 3 dozen recipes and have liked them all. My husband, who is a vegetable hater, is even eating squash and enjoying it! The recipes are so delicious, that my husband asks 'Are you sure this is low-fat?' If you want to eat healthier, without feeling deprived, this is the cookbook for you!
My most-used cookbook.......1998-08-24
I have had this book about a year, and I have tried about 3/4 of the recipes. Only one reject so far - and some of the recipes are terrific. I like to cook, and the ease of preparation is just about right for me for everyday meals - not so simple that the cookbook is unnecessary, but usually not so involved that I can't make something from the book each evening. I also liked that her recipes were creative - not the usual thing that is in every other lo-cal cookbook. The other plus is that they are not full of weird ingredients that you would never use again outside of that recipe. If you like to cook and could spend about 30-45 minutes making dinner, and want different, tasty lo-cal meals that use on-hand ingredients, this is your book.
Book Description
The objective of this book is to give a self-contained presentation to the theory underlying the valuation of derivative financial instruments, which is becoming a standard part of the toolbox of professionals in the financial industry. Not going for the greatest possible level of generality is greatly rewarded by a greater insight into the underlying economic ideas, putting the reader in an excellent position to proceed to the more general continuous-time theory.
The material will be accessible to students and practitioners having a working knowledge of linear algebra and calculus. All additional material is developed from the very beginning as needed. In particular, the book also offers an introduction to modern probability theory, albeit mostly within the context of finite sample spaces.

Granny Squares, Nanny Squares.......2001-07-19
Granny Squares with a Victorian twist. Excellent colourful pictures for each item listed. The patterns are easy to follow with clear diections stating suggested materials. The book also gives detail stitch instruction with easy to follow pictures for the less advanced crocheter. The patterns are unique using different yarns and textures. Not only does the book include afghans but pillows, tablecloths and several ideas for home decorating. This is a wonderful book for any person who enjoys making afghans.
Book Description
The acknowledged authority on Hoover unravels the popular charges of his homosexuality and explains why the FBI director was so interested in sex-related information, and why he failed to combat organized crime. A meticulous account of the real excesses perpetrated by the FBI under Hoover's direction. --Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

He Only Followed Orders.......2005-09-21
This book was written to deny the claims of Anthony Summers that Hoover dressed in women's clothes at orgies. Given that the lack of corroboration, that claim is easily refuted (p.41). Curt Gentry's book told that Hoover's real crime was filing false expense reports. Athan Theoharis argues that Hoover's disinterest is organized crime was the result of a "lack of accountability"!! Hoover was not from a wealthy and powerful family, his career depended on pleasing powerful politicians by using his personal skills and talents (p.79). Hoover was first promoted under Wilson, kept his job under Harding, Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and then Franklin Roosevelt (who increased his powers). Hoover curried favor with powerful businessmen (p.40), and also sought information to stay in power (p.72). Hoover didn't investigate syndicated crime as long as the ruling Power Elite wanted that. Congressmen controlled the FBI budget, and Hoover got along by going along. [After the US Secret Service investigation sent a Senator and Congressman to jail, their budget was cut.] Naval Intelligence worked with organized crime during WW 2. Hoover's statement "no single individual or coalition of racketeers dominates organized crime across the nation" (p.17) is still true today; read that closely. Hoover collected scandalous news a necessary self-protection in the political jungle of Washington (p.72). If Hoover concentrated on left-wing groups rather than La Cosa Nostra he was just following orders (p.139).
Chapter One discusses the personal character of Hoover, but not his family background. The charge of homosexuality was often "used by persons who wanted to smear someone" (p.27). One example concerns three high-level aides of Nixon (pp.30-31)! Hoover wanted "sworn statements" from them denying their homosexuality; did he get them? [Any chance to forge them?] Hoover quickly suppressed such rumors (pp.34-38). Could a "sex photograph" have existed in 1946 (p.47)?[Composite photographs are possible, and actors with make-up to double for real people.] Chapter Two tells about the collecting of personal information of a sexual nature and how it was used for political purposes. [That went on with the Founding Fathers!] Prominent personalities could be controlled and political agendas could be promoted with the possession of this knowledge. [Remember one of the "Honeymooner" shows where Ralph tells Alice she is a "Mrs. J. Edgar Hoover"? What did Jackie Gleason mean?]
Chapter Three discusses the expanded Federal powers of the New Deal. [Actually, that started earlier with Prohibition.] The purpose of the New Deal was to save the Power Elite by triage of malfunctioning units (p.120). The failing economy was followed by a rising crime rate (p.121). The expansion of federal powers was presented as a moral conflict between good and evil, divorced from economic reality. Hollywood produced is melodramas (p.125). [No connection here between the end of a "well-regulated militia" and the rise of organized crime.] FDR re-assigned counter-intelligence from the US Secret Service to the FBI (pp.127-128). The FBI took an interest in politicians (p.135). FBI wiretaps immunized crime bosses from prosecution (p.141)! The justification for secret, illegal bugging practices is on page 150. The protection of organized crime by the Attorney General is on pages 151-152. Read it for yourself!
Presidents, attorneys-general, Congressmen, and others cooperated with and benefitted from J. Edgar Hoover (p.160). Was the ACLU then controlled by the FBI (p.163)? The summary on page 164 only underlines Hoover's role as an enforcer for the Power Elite.
Hoover Critic Debunks Summers.......2003-11-24
Academic debunking of Anthony Summers' scandalous "Official and Confidential" superbly researched and written by a noted critic of J. Edgar Hoover. Summers' bestselling volume used uncorroborated gossip and hearsay to "prove" the late FBI director was a closet homosexual and transvestite blackmailed into submission by organized crime. Theoharis, author of such previous works as "From the Secret Files of J. Edgar Hoover" and "The Boss: J. Edgar Hoover and the Great American Inquisition", sticks to the facts and uses solid scholarship to dismiss the Summers book as baseless.
Book Description
The memories of a farmer at the turn of the century are recounted here in all their complex glory. Facing war, weather, and diseases, this is a realistic look at a time when things were anything but simpler.

A Wonderful Suprise.......2001-04-01
This book had a surprising amount of information and insight. Mr. Cummings followed politics, read newspapers, and wrote poetry, then wrote about these things in his journals. It really gives a look at how hard life was back then, and we like the lead character a lot. I recommend this for anyone who knows someone who grew up on a farm, or who is interested in history.

Book Description
Decision theory and the theory of rational choice have recently been the subjects of considerable research by philosophers and economists. However, no adequate anthology exists which can be used to introduce students to the field. This volume is designed to meet that need. The essays included are organized into five parts covering the foundations of decision theory, the conceptualization of probability and utility, pholosophical difficulties with the rules of rationality and with the assessment of probability, and causal decision theory. The editors provide an extensive introduction to the field and introductions to each part.

Gardenfors and Sahlin ignore Keynes's contributions........2004-11-01
This book is a collection of the most important articles published in applied probability/decision theory through 1988.Some of the articles that are republished in this book are F Ramsey's "Truth and Probability",H Kyburg's" Bets and Beliefs",Kahneman and Tversky's "Prospect Theory...",Issac Levi's "Indeterminate Probabilities",Daniel Ellsberg's "Risk,Ambiguity and the Savage Axiom's",Gardenfors and Sahlin's "Unreliable Probabilities...",among others. This book is highly recommended for the specialist reader. The main criticism of the essays in this book is the complete absence of any discussion about J M Keynes's contributions to applied probability and decision science made in 1921 in his pathbreaking A Treatise on Probability(TP).Gardenfors and Sahlin(GS)make a major error in placing the 1926 Ramsey review of Keynes's TP as the book's first selection.Bertrand Russell was making an understatement when he stated that the Ramsey reviews of Keynes's TP had the least value of any of Ramsey's published or unpublished work.Ramsey completely misinterpreted Keynes's definitions of the word's"nonnumerical" and "nonmeasurable"in Keynes's introductory chapter 3 in the TP.Ramsey mistakenly assumed that Keynes was arguing that in general a decision maker would be unable to estimate probabilities using numbers (or numerals as Keynes called them).Ramsey thus talks about Keynes's "mysterious nonnumerical probabilities" and/or"mysterious degrees of belief".In fact, this reviewer can find no value at all in either of Ramsey's reviews with respect to his assessment of Keynes's TP.Contrary to Ramsey,Keynes is the first scholar in history to develop a systematic approach to estimating probabilities using intervals. Each interval has a lower bound and a upper bound. This requires two numerals, not one. Thus ,by nonnumerical Keynes meant that in general it would not be possible to estimate a probability using a single number(i.e.,nonnumerical meant "not by a single numeral").Of course ,this introduced the problem of overlapping interval estimates.Problems of noncomparability, nonrankability, and incommensurability would complicate the evaluations of probabilities.Ramsey overlooked Keynes's analysis contained in chapters5,10,15,17 and Part III of the TP.Unfortunately,so do all of the other contributors to this book.None of the articles mention that Keynes was the first scholar to specify an index to measure the weight of the evidence.Letting w equal the weight of the evidence,w is defined on the unit interval[0,1]as 0<=w<=1.w measures the completeness of the relevant potential evidence available to a decision maker in order to calculate an estimate of probability. Finally, all of the contributors to this volume of collected essays overlooked Keynes's major contribution to decision theory, his conventional coefficient of risk and weight,c.c incorporates variables needed to deal with nonlinear probability preferences and weight of the evidence problems(Ellsberg calls the problem ambiguity while GS call the problem unreliable probabilities). The goal of Keynes's decision theory is to maximize cA,as opposed to the expected value rule(maximize pA,where p is a reliable probability and A is an outcome)or the expected utility rule(maximize pU(A),where U is a utility function). It is suggested that GS republish Keynes's chapter 26 from the TP in a revised edition so that the potential reader has all the evidence available on Keynes's contribution.
