Why Decisions Fail
Paul C Nutt Manufacturer: Berrett-Koehler Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1576751503 |
Book Description
Why Decisions Fail critiques 15 infamously bad decisions that became public debacles. The author examines how these mistakes could have been avoided and explains how any organization's decision-making process can be improved to prevent such failures.Author Paul Nutt began by looking at 400 decisions made by top managers involving such topics as products and services, pricing and markets, personnel policy, technology acquisition, and strategic reorganization. Analyzing how each decision was made, he determined that two out of three decisions were based on failureprone or questionable tactics. He identifies these key errors and suggests alternatives that have proven successful.

Avoid Debacles.......2002-10-24
Ohio State University Professor Paul C. Nutt, who has spent more than 20 years studying how decision are made, says failures can be traced to three blunders and seven traps. Avoiding the blunders and the traps they set will cut one's failure rate significantly.
The blunders to avoid:
* Failure-Prone Practices
* Premature Commitments
* Wrong-Headed Investments.
These blunders lead unsuspecting managers into seven ensnaring traps:
* Failure to Reconcile Claims
* Failure to Manage the Forces Created by a Decision
* Ambiguous Directions
* Limited Search with No Innovation
* Misuse of Evaluation
* Avoidance of Ethic Questions
* Failure to Learn.
Sounds simple; yet anyone who has participated in a project recognizes these blunders and traps. In fact, most of us could supply the author with reams of case studies to add to the ones he uses to illustrate his points.
This is a great book and should be read by project managers and corporate managers alike. Microsoft's number may seem high, but there is no doubt we participate in too many projects that spiral behind schedule and over-budget. Good decision making techniques can only help improve our results.

The Collaborative Enterprise: Why Links Between Business Units Often Fail and How to Make Them Work
Andrew Campbell , and Michael Goold Manufacturer: Basic Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0738203106 |
Amazon.com
In today's highly fluid business environment, for disparate business units to work together smoothly is increasingly becoming a critical component of long-term success. Andrew Campbell and Michael Goold understand this, and in The Collaborative Enterprise, the two examine "how synergy happens, why it doesn't happen, and what managers can do about it." Using real-world examples, they first look at the difficulties inherent in such partnerships and propose solutions from three different perspectives: the parent manager, the business-unit manager, and the researcher. "Collaborative management can be a major source of advantage," they caution in conclusion. "But, for the vast majority of companies it is not just a nice ambition, it is a competitive necessity." --Howard RothmanBook Description
The world's foremost authorities on multi-business strategy show how to overcome barriers to synergy and achieve real collaboration across the company"The Collaborative Enterprise is a thoughtful, thorough approach to an opportunity that has long eluded many corporations. The authors use their considerable experience to create practical tools for managers at both corporate centers and business units, showing how the whole can truly become more valuable than the sum of the parts."
-Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard Business School
In today's diversified companies, or those resulting from the boom in mergers, acquisitions, and alliances, synergy is touted as a great strategic advantage. But more often than not, it turns out to be a mirage, as managers haggle over turf and senior management lacks the skills or commitment to recognize, support, and sustain collaboration. In The Collaborative Enterprise, Andrew Campbell and Michael Goold offer an incisive and highly practical approach to overcoming barriers to synergy, evaluating opportunities within and outside the company, establishing appropriate roles for corporate headquarters and business units, and fostering a commitment to collaboration at all levels of the organization.

Worth Mulling Over.......2001-02-25
This is not a book that calls for underlining and highlighting, but it definitely has value as a basis for reflecting on various aspects of collaboration, and the failure of collaboration, within enterprises.
The book is written strictly from the perspective of people and perceptions. It does not have a technical or a financial side and this was disappointing. It would have been more useful to have a book that fully integrated human, technical, and financial success stories and failure stories to present an integrated picture of collaborative work principles in a global economy using the Internet as the backbone for collaborative work.
The book is well-written, the figures are useful, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to sit quietly on an airplane and think about the authors' subtitle: why links between business units often fail, and how to make them work.

An Essential Book for Building Collaborative Teams.......2000-04-01
While Belbin's title suggests this book is simply about business management, the content of the book is of much wider applicability. This book is a valuable, perhaps indispensable, source for anyone involved in collaborative endeavors. The book would be useful if it merely answered the question "Why do collaborative (creative, decision-making) teams succeed or fail?" Belbin goes much further than that. He tells us how to proactively build teams that are predisposed to succeed and, equally importantly, how to adopt strategies that will lead to success on the part of teams not so fortunately constructed.
I have found this book very useful in building, and teaching the building, of software product development teams, and heartily recommend it for that purpose.
Using Belbins team roles.......2000-02-04
The language Belbin uses is friendly and easy to read and so the book is ideal material for trainers and students alike.
A classic book which should be included on every HR Trainers bookshelf.
Matching personality with tasks, and vice versa: the prequel.......1998-10-14
His team role theory is fascinating, and has been shown to correspond with Cattell's 16PF and with the Big 5 personality taxonomy (see e.g. John's chapter in Pervin's Hanbook of Personality).
His ideas on the problems with "perfect fits" in organizations and how to discover "surprise fits" are very ingenous.
Belbin perhaps spends too many words on his discoveries, but they are good words.

Process Management: Why Project Management Fails in Complex Decision Making Processes
Hans de Bruijn , Ernst ten Heuvelhof , and Roel J. in 't Veld Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402073313 |
Book Description
More and more decisions have to be made in networks. Networks have no hierarchy, which precludes simple command and control-type decision making. In addition, project-based techniques are unlikely to succeed in networks, since project management presupposes that one actor, the project manager, is at the top of a hierarchy.

Risk Assessment And Decision Making In Business And Industry: A Practical Guide - Second Edition
Glenn Koller Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1584884770 |
Book Description
Building upon the technical and organizational groundwork presented in the first edition, Risk Assessment and Decision Making in Business and Industry: A Practical Guide, Second Edition addresses the many aspects of risk/uncertainty (R/U) process implementation. This comprehensive volume covers four broad aspects of R/U: general concepts, implementation processes, technical aspects, and examples of application. Each section provides practical guidance, combining technical information with advice on how to implement R/U techniques and processes in real-world corporate environments. Following an examination of general principles involved in quantitatively assessing risks and their impact on value, the book describes the two main probabilistic measures of project value - Expected Value of Success (EVS) and the Expected Value for the Portfolio (EVP). The text clearly demonstrates how these metrics are used in individual-project and portfolio management. By presenting concepts in layman's terms and fully integrating advice related to technical and human characteristics of R/U-related corporate life, this book serves as a complete primer for professionals in any business environment. What's New in the Second Edition: · Provides guidance for implementation of R/U processes in modern corporations · Offers a crucial breakthrough by defining the terms "risk" and "uncertainty" in ways that can be applied in all aspects of science and business · Explores real-world impediments to process change and implementation · Addresses R/U from a corporate decision-maker's perspective, detailing how to employ R/U to set budgets, manage portfolios, value investments, and execute other critical tasks

Helping Working Families: The Earned Income Tax Credit
Saul D. Hoffman , and Laurence S. Seidman Manufacturer: W. E. Upjohn Institute ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0880992530 |
Book Description
It's rare that one of the nation's income transfer programs finds favor among both liberals and conservatives, but the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has done just that. Administered by the Internal Revenue Service, the EITC rewards low- to moderate-income individuals and families with a significant refundable credit even if they owe little or no taxes. Conservatives find the EITC's work requirement appealing, while liberals see the program as a source of cash assistance for the working poor. No wonder, then, that the EITC has grown to become the centerpiece of the nation's antipoverty programs.In Helping Working Families: The Earned Income Tax Credit, Saul D. Hoffman and Laurence S. Seidman offer an up-to-date assessment of the EITC in which they analyze, evaluate, summarize, and critique the current state of the program. The authors find that, overall, the EITC works well, and that it has earned its political popularity. Yet they also uncover several problem areas that they address with specific recommendations based on their analysis.
Hoffman and Seidman point to four facets of the EITC that seem inconsistent with the intent of the program. First, it penalizes work among workers with income at the high end of the EITC schedule. Adding the EITC "phase-out" rate of 21 percent to federal income tax and the payroll tax yields a total marginal tax rate of approximately 50 percent, a rate high enough to discourage work among married couples with moderate incomes. Next, the EITC imposes substantial marriage penalties. For instance, if a full-time minimum wage worker marries a full-time minimum wage worker with two children, they suffer a penalty of more than $1,600 compared to what they would have received if they had remained single. The EITC also leaves larger families with low-wage workers stuck in poverty. A married couple with two children and a single wage earner working full-time at $6.50 per hour is still poor even after adding in their $4,000 EITC income. Finally, the EITC eligibility criteria are very complex, especially regarding whether a household has "a qualifying child" and thus is eligible for more generous benefits.
The good news, according to the authors, is that these problems are not independent of each other. In fact, they point out that a revision to improve one of the shortcomings listed above may contribute to the solution of the others. By recommending 1) a reduction in the current EITC phase-out rate for a family with two or more children, 2) the establishment of a separate, more generous EITC schedule for married couples, and 3) a new rate schedule for families with three or more children, Hoffman and Seidman feel that the nation can take a good program and make it even better.
