Customer Reviews:
Community Service.......2002-06-10
In books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad, the author wrote about returning to society what one has reaped. In this book, Mr. Graham attempts to do it the other way round - almost. Build your brand from the community side. Market yourself as trustworthy and let the word of mouth spreads and presumably good things will come to bear.
While the examples were very inspiring, many of them African Americans, the concepts and ideas are not new. One get a sense of deja vu if you have read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the likes.
"A vital part of ones ongoing journey of success".......2001-09-21
Stedman Graham does an excellent job writing on a virtually un-noticed aspect of being successful. This book is very reader friendly, and informative. Our life brands should be just as important to us as Coca-Cola is to its makers. It really boils down to standing for what we believe in, and getting ourselves known by as many people as we can. Mr. Graham focuses on public speaking, service work, advertising, etc.. My only qualms about this great book is the authors redundant use of anecdotes. If he would have used less examples and more of his great teaching abilities, I would have surely given this book five stars.
It's OK...but rather simplistic.......2001-06-13
I am halfway through the book as I type this. This book has a wealth of real-life examples of successful individuals who have branded themselves (e.g. Oprah, Michael Jordan, and others who are not-so famous). It also includes some examples of branding missteps (e.g. Dennis Rodman, the Barbie doll Holiday Edition debacle). All in all, it rehashes the same stuff over and over again without giving less motivated readers a clear cut plan on where to start (most readers with motivation know this stuff already). Examples include: 1. Live your passion (how many times have we heard this) 2. Don't let your circumstances keep you from branding yourself (again...it's been said before) 3. Don't let others influence your choices 4. Make the right choices and things will fall into place (the examples he uses makes it seem as if this will magically take place with no pitfalls) 5. Make the wrong choices and...DOOM! 6. Spend your time on your dreams and goals .....
I have read 100 pages and have yet to read a truly unique piece of advice. Sure this is an OK read for those of us who know these principles and may need a kick in the pants to jump-start ourselves again...however, some people need more tangible advice.
The section on creating success circles is the best part so far...but it took up a total of 10 pages. I am skimming the rest of the book and see more of the same. (e.g. Ways to Expand Your Brand include creating a website...starting a newsletter...create a non-profit organization)
All that I can say is that a typical man or woman in a humdrum existance will not feel any better about their lives after they are fed example after example of celebrities and major companies with successful branding. How about giving us a story about a single mother of four with two jobs who "found her passion."
Reading the vignettes were certainly stimulating, but will do little for those who don't know the ABCs of how to "just do it."
I would definitely give it 5 stars if giving it to a pre-teen or high school student. In fact, I am saving it for my kids.
Phenomenal work!.......2001-05-08
Stedman, you've done it again! As the editor of Empowermag.com, I must read so many books on personal/professional development that my eyes get crossed.
However, when I got Build Your Own Lifebrand, I could not put the book down because it was so compelling! What a concept, mission and movement. Kudos to your achievements in life and the impact your're making in the lives of many.
I'm glad to have shared history with such a brilliant history maker as yourself. Keep up the great work!

Unpaid Service to Others Establishes Your Public Identity.......2001-04-29
In this celebrity-fascinated age, Professor Graham has written a solid book advocating the opportunity to build a more meaningful personal life through public service in ways that build on your strengths and preferences. The book contains many, many examples of celebrities pursuing this direction successfully, as well as the author's own experiences.
Build Your Own Life Brand! could have used fewer celebrities, and many more people who are like the typical reader. Professor Graham talks about his personal pain in the past at being seen merely as Ms. Oprah Winfrey's boyfriend, yet works Ms. Winfrey and that former connection into the book ad nauseum. Methinks the professor doth protest too much!
The book's basic weakness is that it outlines principles rather than having the kind of practical, detailed directions most people need, despite having a number of exercises in the book. As a result, the advice will probably work well for people who are celebrities already, people who are friends of celebrities already, those who are obsessed with becoming celebrities, and people who are part of "minority" groups that are underrepresented in the public mind and need attention.
The best part of this book was its focus on what value you bring to others as the first element of establishing a positive public image. Compare this idea to the behavior of people like Michael Milken and Bill Gates who began to work in philanthropic activities only after they ran into serious government and public relations problems.
I agree with this point for several reasons. First, your own efforts to add value to others will be vastly more effective than anything you could do to add value only for yourself. So you can accomplish more this way. Second, it feels better to be helping than to be helped. Third, there is room for more scope and creativity in helping others. Fourth, you will attract resources you would otherwise never have if you help others first. Naturally, if you do this well, you will also meet some people and accomplish some things that benefit your personal interests. Although there are a number of things about this book that I did not like, I think that this book deserves to be widely read for the effective way that public service is advocated.
The other strong point in the book's favor is that it points out that people will hang labels on you, whether or not you try to present a consisent image. Most of those labels will be incorrect, and lead to missed potential. For example, the bus driver who arranged for Ms. Rosa Parks to be arrested for not giving up her seat for a white man viewed her as just another person lacking the full rights of a citizen. By her action, she asserted that she was a full citizen. By continuing her fight, most people never misunderstood her again.
On the other hand, I found that applying the concept of a life brand as a total structure for one's life to be uncomfortable. Yes, if done well, that approach does make it easier for people to understand who you are and what you are interested in. On the other hand, it also excludes a great deal of potential freedom and openness. The idea also presumes that somehow you have wasted your life if you aren't connecting, connecting, and connecting some more. Well, some aspects of life are best developed by quiet, by thinking, in private with your loved ones, and even with solitude.
For relationship building, you certainly see a great shallowness here compared to Dr. Phil McGraw's Relationship Rescue.
In a similar vein, I found Tom Peter's book, the brand you50 (from his series called Reinvesting Work), to be far more realistic. It connects personal brand building to its commercial value as a communications process, and leaves plenty of space for even the most passionate personal brand builder to have a private life disconnected from the career brand.
After you have finished all of this, I suggest that you imagine yourself writing your own obituary. What would you like it to say? If having established a clear public identity helps, then please do so. But don't assume that it does.
Accomplish your life's purpose in the most appropriate ways!
Book Description
Even the French admit that Jancis Robinson is the "undisputed mistress of the kingdom of wine" (Le Figaro). Internationally renowned for her work in both television and print, she is the editor of the bestselling Oxford Companion to Wine and has won more than two dozen major awards around the world. Tasting Pleasure is her compelling account of a passion that began while studying at Oxford University.
Writing with Julia Child's authority, Elizabeth David's intelligence, and M.F.K. Fisher's verve, Robinson takes us on a journey through the world's finest cellars, most beautiful vineyards, and best restaurants. As she explores the universe of the grape--from Bordeaux to Australia and South Africa to California--we meet scores of colorful, wine-loving characters, including Philippe de Rothschild, Julian Barnes, Francis Ford Coppola, and Julio Gallo.
There are many books about producing and rating wine; this one is about enjoying it. Witty, revealing, and knowledgeable, in Tasting Pleasure Jancis Robinson has distilled twenty years in the wine world into a hugely entertaining read.
--Robinson received the 1995 Wine Literary Award from the Wine Appreciation Guild
"Our cleverest, most thoughtful wine writer . . . well known wherever wine is made or consumed." -Paul Levy, The Wall Street Journal
"Of all the wine writers in the world," proclaimed Robert Parker, "Jancis Robinson may well be the most gifted. . . . She is witty, brilliant, authoritative."
Customer Reviews:
A Matter Of Perspective.......2004-09-01
If you want tasting notes and rankings, pick up Robert Parker or Hugh Johnson. This is a book about a life in wine, not a book about wine.
"Tasting Pleasure" is a ramble through Jancis Robinson's ascent into the heavens of the wine world. She's been very lucky, and has supported that luck with intelligence and hard work. In other hands, this story might have been insufferable; but Robinson's greatest gift may be her ability to keep a sense of perspective while progressing from one table laden with fine bottles to the next. She is well aware of the essential frivolity of what she does for a living, and also well aware of her good fortune.
N.B.: Unless you're totally fascinated with Jancis Robinson, there are sections that are easily skippable. The book remains, even so, a worthwhile addition to your wine library.
Just a Wine Lover?.......2004-04-22
I confess to a liking for books from those who are knowledgeable when it comes to wine. Perhaps it is more correct to say books that provide me with knowledge and personal insights. Jancis Robinson's "Tasting Pleasure" is a particularly insightful look into the birth and growth of a wine connoisseur. In some respects the stars align perfectly for Ms Robinson as she rises, very quickly, from tour guide to assistant editor of the British wine trade magazine Wine & Spirit in 1975, to Master of Wine in 1984, to author and TV presenter. However it is also clear that the considerable knowledge and experience that she gained during these years contributed significantly to the evolution of her career and to her current status. She has been privileged to taste some extraordinary wines in the company of some extraordinary wine tasters; Michael Broadbent to name just one. It is easy for those of us who are unlikely to rise to such heights of pleasure to fall into the trap of dismissing such experiences as conceited ramblings. But it should be appreciated that access to such wine completes the spectrum of tasting experiences available to the connoisseur; those of us who taste the great and the near great have to be satisfied with being somehow incomplete. What is interesting is that Ms Robinson prefers to call herself a Wine Lover, that is something we can all claim to be.
Dry...Dry...Dry.......2003-09-16
I have to admit I didn't read the entire book. I got bored and decided to count the grains of sand in the street in front of my house.
This is just a brain dump of opinions and experiences. The last sentence should be "...well...I guess you had to be there."
A Must For Fans of Jancis and of Wine!.......2001-04-27
I have been shocked to see Jancis Robinson's books and videos being slated by Americans. Maybe her European style and English stlye of writing aggrevates Americans. I found this book absolutely charming! (Then again, I am European!)It's not a guide to wine in itself but more a fascinating tale of Jancis' involvement with wine and it's producers. If you bear this in mind when you order it, you will not be disappointed. Her turn of phrase makes this the ideal book to read whilst sipping a nice glass of wine!
A new tonic for insomnia.......2001-01-22
My wife found a damaged copy of Confessions for a few dollars, and bought it for me as a joke. She and I have both laughed for years at Jancis' smarmy tone in her column in Wine Spectator, though I also found her very knowledgeable about wine. Writing about herself rather than wine, Jancis has lost any sense of what the reader might possibly care about. It is the single most boring book I have read in my life, including chemistry textbooks. I seriously use it to fall asleep at night. It puts me out cold in 1/2 page, on average. That's worth a star!

A very helpful, definitive must-read for new investors!.......1997-10-30
As a college student, I really wanted to take advantage of the current good market, but I didn't have a clue as to where to start. This book starts off by clearly explaining in layman's terms the in and outs of mutual funds. The author defines common terms and practices, and then he lists the 100 best mutual funds, broken down into specific types of funds, i.e. Aggressive Growth Funds, Balanced Funds, etc. Don't worry that the information in this book will soon be outdated, this book can be used as a long lasting reference. The information in the opening chapters can definitely be used in the future, and even though the performance of the top 100 funds changes from year to year, the companies listed are consistently top contenders. As further proof of my belief in this book; a week ago I knew nothing about investing, this week I made my first calls to several mutual funds to request prospectus'!
Book Description
Is your judgment influenced by personal biases?
In situations requiring careful judgment, we're all influenced by our own biases to some extent. But, with Max Bazerman's Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, Sixth Edition, you can learn how to overcome those biases to make better managerial decisions.
The text examines judgment in a variety of organizational contexts, and provides practical strategies for changing your decision-making processes and improving these processes so that they become part of your permanent behavior. Throughout, you'll findnumerous hands-on decision exercises and examples from the author's extensive executive training experience that will help you enhance the quality of your managerial judgment.
Past editions have been used in top universities, in business schools, and in public policy, psychology, and economics classes. In addition, the text has been widely recognized by practitioners in the world of behavioral finance.
Revised with two new chapters
This Sixth Edition now adds chapters on bounded ethicality (Chapter 8) and bounded awareness (Chapter 11). Both of these chapters are based on Bazerman's recent writing with Dolly Chugh and Mahzarin Banaji.
Max H. Bazerman is the Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. In addition, Max is also formally affiliated with the Kennedy School of Government, the Psychology Department, and the Program on Negotiation at Harvard. He is the author or co-author of over 150 research articles and chapters, and the author of numerous other books. Max was named one of the top 30 authors, speakers, and teachers of management by Executive Excellence in each of their two most recent rankings.

We're not so smart.......2007-08-02
Have you ever wondered why some people make such stupid mistakes? Well, we are all prone, hard-wired and influenced to make astounding errors in judgment. Bazerman takes you on a journey into all the reasons why, full substantiated by science. All of it is fascinating. And, hopefully, once you are aware of what is really going on in our own brains we can be aware enough to mitigate those dangerous tendencies and become very clear about what we do.
Master Judgment for Managment and Life.......2007-02-09
A very well written book that will lead you to the most rigorous introspection in decision making
Book Description
Author is a leading theorist in negotiation and decision-making.

A Real Jewel in Decision Making Theory.......2004-01-25
There are many quantitative books on Decision Making Theory but this book deals basically with the subjective aspects of Decision Making. I used it at the University of São Paulo as textbook for a graduate class on Decision Making under Uncertainty together with Clemen & Reilly's book "Making Hard Decisions".
Bazerman's focus on common decion biases and heuristics makes us think a lot about how we make decisions and normally has nothing to do with rational quantitative "perfect world" decision making normally teached at business schools. Do read this book if Decision Making Theory is important for you, this is really a classic on this subject!!!! With less than 200 pages you really can't afford not reading it.
A good primer on Judgement and Decision Making.......2003-08-12
I use this in my course on behavioral decision making. Highly readable and useful.
Summary - Judgment In Managerial Decision Making.......1997-11-10
Max Bazerman had one central purpose in mind when he wrote his book, Judgment In Managerial Decision Making. He hoped to improve the judgment and decision making skills of his audience, whether they be managers of multi-billion dollar corporations or consumers deciding how much to offer a salesman for a new car. Through the use of vivid real-world examples Max Bazerman identifies systematic ways in which judgment and decision making skills deviate from rationality under uncertain conditions. The end result is that the reader can readily comprehend the concepts outlined in the book and easily apply them to his or her own life.
The only major weakness in the book has to do with its discussion of the multiparty decision-making process. Because of the complex dynamics of these multiparty situations, Bazerman is forced to limit his coverage to only a select number of issues that he believes are especially pertinent to understanding decision making among several groups. Academics have also spent less formal research time on multiparty decision-making versus two-party and individual decision making. Therefore, the number of real-world contemporary examples are quite limited, making the reader less inclined to believe the results.
Makes you think about your own decision making process........1997-11-07
In his book, Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, Max Bazerman applies behavioral decision research into an organizational setting. He acknowledges that even though the rational decision-making process will lead to optimal decisions, the process is too time consuming to use in reality. Therefore, managers must rely on their intuitive judgment to find satisficing solutions to the problems they confront on a daily basis. The first half of the book examines the reader's judgment by explaining how the utilization of heuristics, rules of thumb used by managers to simplify problem solving in complex situations, can lead to irrational decisions when inappropriately applied. Cognitive biases are the cause of irrational decisions when heuristics are used improperly. In addition, Bazerman also offers an analysis of how uncertainty, escalation of commitment, and concern for fairness affect managerial decision-making. The second half of the book addresses how the decision-making process relates to both two-party and multiparty situations. Bazerman discusses the difficulty individuals face when trying to act rationally in competitive negotiations. He also describes the complexities work groups or project teams face when they hold a cooperative as well as a competitive position. The final chapter presents four strategies for improving the decision-making process. The first and second strategies are eliminating biases, and acquiring experience and expertise through feedback on the outcome of previous decisions. Both strategies are designed to alter intuitive responses to various decision-making situations. The third and fourth strategies offer techniques for improving decisions using linear models and accounting for the biases that influence the decisions of others. In his conclusions, Bazerman states that "the manager is likely rewarding behaviors that may not be functional in the future" by rewarding results rather than the decision-making process. Therefore, he recommends that managers reward employees for good decisions rather than results. Improving judgment and decision-making abilities is a step in the right direction towards making better decisions.
Strategies to improve rational decision-making.......1997-11-06
In Max Bazerman's novel, Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, he outlines particular strategies and concepts that managers should use in their decision-making process. Through his examples and easy- -to-read text, Bazerman does an excellent job of taking the reader on a journey to improved decision making, while at the same time, keeping the reader's interest. This first and second point of view writing style makes the novel more personal and easy to relate to. His contemporary examples and scenarios clearly represent the message he is trying to convey. Bazerman discusses:
- Rational decision making process
- Biases that affect managers' judgments
- Psychological factors that explain how managers respond to uncertainty
- Why managers make nonoptimal decisions to justify a previous commitment
- Inconsistencies of judging fairness
- Motivational biases
- Optimization in two-party negotiations
- Judgments in multiparty negotiations
- Additional decision making strategies
After reading Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, the reader will be able to make more rational managerial decisions. The concepts Bazerman explains will help all readers improve their decision-making process, even under the contraints of time, cost, intelligence, and perception.

Book Description
The study of behavioral decision making has recently expanded into the area of accounting and auditing. This branch of research seeks to understand the cognitive processes that govern such necessary functions as the pricing of products and services, evaluating corporate performance, granting credit to prospective borrowers, and investing in financial securities. In Judgment and Decision-Making Research in Accounting and Auditing, editors Robert and Alison Ashton present and review more than twenty years of research in decision-making science. The book analyzes the judgments that business managers, investors, auditors and creditors make daily; considers the assets and liabilities of applied decision making, and makes suggestions for future research. Accounting and auditing academics, researchers, practitioners and students who seek a survey of the field and its applications will find this to be a solid reference work.
