A new edition - and virtually a new book........2003-08-06

The production of a new edition has given the opportunity for extensive revision and for rearranging the book around one of the many variants of the cycle of learning - in this case Plan-Do-Check-Act
Part 1, Plan has five chapters concerned mostly with statutory issues (Health and safety, product safety) and with training. Part 2 has 11 chapters concerned with quality assurance in relation to procurement, supply, process, product, service and so on and with associated documentation and records in the context of ISO 9000. Part 3, Check, has ten chapters concerned with statistical analysis, audit and review and benchmarking. Part 4, Act, has seven chapters concerned with various aspects of quality management, including ISO9001 certification, continuous improvement, the use of the balanced scorecard, Total Quality Management and environmental/sustainability issues.
The coverage is comprehensive, within a perspective that focuses on quality management as a service rather than as a strategic driving force for change.

Everything you wanted to know ..........2003-08-06

Gower have a long tradition of publishing Handbooks on aspects of management, and the quality is consistently good. Each is structured for easy reference, and each makes use of acknowledged experts in their respective fields. Another characteristic is that each chapter ends with a set of references for those who want to go further into the specific area covered by the chapter. This new edition brings together a team of experts under a world leader in the field, to offer very comprehensive coverage, with each of the 43 chapters excellently referenced for those who want further detail in a particular area.
It is a monumental book (660 pages). With its exhaustive coverage of every aspect of current supply chain management and its probable development, it is indispensable for anyone working in the field, or whose work depends on sound supply chain management by others - which covers most of us. However, its scale makes it rather intimidating for those who simply want to understand the scope of the field without going beyond the main principles. For these readers, the first four or five chapters give a reasonable strategic overview, or they could go to Hugos: Essentials of Supply Chain Management, which is designed to provide an appreciation of key principles rather than depth of detail.

Travel's not easy for the vegetarian voyager--at least the dining aspect isn't. Sure, you know where to go in your own home town for good vegetarian fare, but eating on the road is often fraught with unpleasant surprises (such as the meat stock in an allegedly vegetarian dish) or culinary disappointments (another meal of bread and cheese, how thrilling). The Vegetarian Journal's Guide to Natural Foods Restaurants in the U.S. & Canada is a godsend for vegetarians away from home, listing more than 2,000 restaurants, spas, vacation spots, inns, camps, tours, and travel agencies that cater to herbivores. Alphabetical organization brings order to the listings. It's arranged alphabetically by states for the U.S. and by provinces for Canada, then alphabetically by city within each state or province, and alphabetically again by restaurant within each city. And for each spot, the authors provide the necessary information in a few pithy lines. Not every restaurant is strictly vegetarian, so along with address, phone, hours of operation, price category, and which credit cards are accepted, they list the vegetarian details you need to know, such as how Minga's Mexican Restaurant in Glendale, Arizona, does not use lard in their vegetarian burritos or fajitas, but that the rice may contain chicken, so you need to ask first. Restaurants that are strictly vegetarian or vegan are marked as such, as are the places the authors specifically recommend. As for the rest, it's good just to know in advance that Bongkot Thai Express in San Rafael, California, offers 17 vegetarian dishes; that the China Pavilion in Atlanta, Georgia, uses vegetarian broth for all its vegetarian menu items; and that the No Pop Sandwich Shoppe in Whitehorse, Yukon, makes veggie burgers, pastas, and salads--but eschews soda pop. Outdated.......2002-01-01

I agree with the other reviewers that the material in this book is extremely outdated. Instead of just showing up at the establishment, I called ahead to inquire about hours, etc. I would estimate about 2/5 of the calls I made were disconnected numbers. I hope the VRG decides to revise and create another edition of this book, as the concept is fantastic. My advice is to hold off purchasing this book.

I agree with the last reviewer who found this book out of date. I've had the same experience in my cross-country travels of finding closed/non existent restaurants, and I'm one of the contributors to the book! I've crossed out many of the entries in my copy and know of several new vegetarian restaurants that opened since.

It's not that this is a bad book. On the contrary, it contains the names, addresses, phone numbers, descriptions, prices, etc. of restaurants, plus information on vacation spots. But like an old phone book, this type of information quickly goes out of date and needs frequent updating. There are websites where you can get up-to-date vegetarian restaurant information for free.

Outdated material.......2000-04-16

My family was very disapointed to arrive in several U.S. cities(Sacramento, Los Angeles, Pasadena,and Northridge in California and Portland and Ashland, Oregon), armed with our veggie guide book, only to discover many of the restaurants were out of business. The latest printing says 1998 yet one restaurant in Sacramento, Ca. (Marline's Vegetable Patch), we were told, had been closed for four years. This book needs a serious update. We were let down numerous times and it really messed up our plans. The resource woud be great if it really had been revised in 1998. Also, there are some great Vegan and vegetarian restaurants that are left off the list completely. It makes me wonder who is doing the scouting for Vegetarian Journal.

Describes woodworking techniques.......2007-01-19

This is a book on woodworking methods, such as different joints, various types of cuts, etc. It describes pros and cons of these topics.

It is not a book filled with plans, although there are two projects given.

If you want detailed plans of several different projects look elsewhere.

If you want to learn about different woodworking techniques and how they apply specifically to desks and bookcases, you may find this book useful.

At long last the true Richard Nixon can be revealed. The man known as "Tricky Dick," who is seen today as the greatest villain in the history of American politics, actually began his amazing career as a principled campaigner and a scrupulously honest member of Congress.

Sadly, the first real reassessment of Richard Nixon's early career -- his Congress years -- had to wait until after his death in 1994. Only then was Pulitzer Prize-nominee Irwin F. Gellman able to get the documentary access of which previous Nixon biographers could only dream. Gellman became the first historian to have complete and unfettered access to (among other sources) the 1946, 1948, and 1950 campaign files in the National Archives; papers from the executive sessions of HUAC; and every document dated through July 1952 in the Nixon Library & Birthplace. All told, Gellman scoured millions of pages in dozens of collections, the vast majority of which have never before been used.

Gellman's research revealed that much of the work done on Nixon was not only based on incomplete information but was wrong. The legend of "Tricky Dick" was little more than a series of myths. For example: The "Committee of 100" did not buy Nixon his 1946 upset of Jerry Voorhis. Nixon did not unfairly smear Helen Gahagan Douglas. There was no secret funding of his Senate race in 1950. Nixon did not out-McCarthy McCarthy on HUAC. And finally, Nixon was true to Earl Warren at the 1952 convention -- there was no secret deal made for the vice presidency. As Gellman irrefutably shows, each of these myths has been built on guesswork or faulty sources.

Who then was the real Richard Nixon? Other historians have given us ominous hints and vague charges of financial and moral misconduct. Gellman shows otherwise, and the proof is in the details. In 1946 Nixon used his own meager savings in a shoestring campaign. In 1950, operating with a budget in the low six-figures -- high for the time, but many times lower than other estimates -- he reaped the benefits of his opponent's bruising primary. And the Red bashing? On HUAC Nixon was a moderate who won universal praise for his even-handedness. Behind the scenes he cautioned McCarthy against his excesses.

Even during the incredible success of Nixon's Congress years there are occasional lapses of judgment. But, as Gellman shows, it was innocence and energy -- not deceit -- that made a fresh-faced Richard Nixon the victor against great odds in contest after contest. Here are the triumphs of the early years of a young man that we can unabashedly admire. Here is the rise of Richard Nixon, from nobody to vice president, that makes all previous biographies obsolete. Here is the Nixon that history will now remember.

Epitome of historical research.......2004-05-13

The Contender is by far the most objective, well-researched, and best historical work on Richard Nixon. Instead of focusing on the slurs and character assasinations that make up most of the present works on Nixon, Dr. Irwin Gellman has restored some integrity to the discipline of history by producing history based on facts (what a concept, hey?). Instead of writing a politically motivated book, Dr. Gellman's goal was to produce a history of Nixon's early campaigns. The chapters on Jerry Voorhis and Helen Gahagan Douglas are extremely sensible and its surprising that it has taken academia this long to figure out the truth about the two campaigns. Instead of the "sinister" Tricky Dick using smoke and mirrors to win seats in Congress and the senate, we have a hardworking, sometimes naive, idealistic, and dedicated young man who wants to make a diference by entering politics. After reading The Contender, there should be no doubt in anyone's mind that Voorhis and Douglas lost because they were out of touch with their constituents, their own party abandoned them, and Nixon was a part of a new political movement that wanted to discontinue the excesses of the new deal but keep its practical programs. The left-wing myths created to discredit and smear Nixon will never hold weight again.

Prepare to be challenged.......2001-05-25

When you read this book, you should be prepare to be challenged on what you have heard about Nixon before. This book undoes--or purports to--all of the early Nixon myths. It appears to be exhaustingly researched, and Nixon haters can take comfort in the notion that Nixon became the Nixon they hated after the 1960 Presidential Election.

Still, Gellman does sugarcoat some things Nixon does, and appears to draw some charitable conclusions without any backup. It is an interesting read, and a portrayal of what by any accounts is a remarkable journey from unknown to Vice President.

Penetrating look at the young Nixon.......2001-02-14

Though there were shades of the later Nixon in the young man, he was not nearly as visceral, vulgar or mean-spirited as he was to become as President. There were tinges of guilt in his make-up when he stepped over the line of decency, and such signs were utterly absent in President Nixon. Gellman is a fluid writer who is painstaking in being fair to Nixon and presenting him as a fairly likeable, though monstrously aggressive Congressman. He maintains that the young Nixon was a good father and attentive husband, thought he evidence for this is grossly lacking. He was the quintessential absentee father who spent almost no time with his daughters. Gellman conveniently ignores this.

More troubling is that Gellman almost seeks to exonerate Nixon from two of the most mudslinging and tawdry campaigns of all time: his 1946 run for Congress against the hapless, though decent Jerry Voorhis, and his inhumane hatchet job against Helen Gahagan Douglas in 1950. Nixon's brutal character assassination of Douglas in conveniently skirted, or excuses are made for RN. Because Gellman frequently falls into the habit of glossing over Nixon's destructive impulses, the book never reaches any grandiose literary heights.

Nixon has been the subject of much nonsense, particularly of the psycho-babble genre. Gellman thankfully doesn't attempt any of this and the book is a better product for it. Ultimately, this is a readable, balanced (overly balanced!) portrait of a young man driven by demons and a lust for power. For anyone wishing to understand Nixon in his 30's, this is an essential study.

Labels galore.......2000-12-18

The book is well-written, it is effective in presenting details of Nixon's early career, and it bends over backward to be fair toward him. It does not bend over backward to be fair to everyone else: Gellman finds it too easy to lump New Deal liberals with Socialists and Communists - making it seem the only difference that he sees between them is shades of pink. That makes it hard to accept his arguments about red-baiting - arguments that are important to Gellman's treatment of Nixon as an honorable, ethical lawmaker ... Still, this is a stimulating work and one that taught me a lot about one of America's most fascinating political characters.

A Welcome Change.......2000-09-08

I have never been very knowledgable about Richard Nixon. When I picked up this book, I was pleasantly surprised by what I learned. This book is an honest and factual portrayal of a man who served his country, and not the poobah of Watergate scandals.It is so refreshing to learn about the man and not just read criticism after criticism. Nixon's great character and accomplishments are in this book, and I recommend it to any student of political science or just fans of the genre.

too strategic becomes too certain, you are avoiding uncertai.......2000-01-07

Too many people believe too much on strategic thinking, while they are too certain about everything they really thought they could manage. In reality there are many things uncontrollable. Many factors and many aspects includes and involves uncertainty. So too short sided views and narrow casting creates dis solutions to many problems which require more open mindedness. So strategic thinking ghas to incorporate more system thinking which include uncertainty. Allocating some views with an uncertainty aspects will complete and better development in solutions.
