                Book Description

                From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School comes a revolutionary guide to mastering the business world in the digital age

                In 1960, Mark McCormack revolutionized the sports world when he shook hands with a young golfer named Arnold Palmer. It was that simple handshake, combined with a love of golf, that clinched a deal that would help him to build IMG, the most successful and prestigious sports management agency in the world. In 1984, he shook the business world with his landmark bestseller What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School, a pragmatic manual of real business advice that became the first mega-bestseller of its genre. Now, McCormack returns with the trademark practical, straightforward yet timely wisdom that has established his books as classics in their field.

                Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age is a sensible yet revolutionary protocol for doing business in the age of E-mail, fax machines, mobile phones, and voice mail. McCormack's revolutionary message this time is that there hasn't been a revolution, despite the advent of the cyber age. We still have to conduct business face-to-face. Human communication and contact--how you actually run your day, your life, your office; how you treat your employees, and how you deal with clients and competitors--are still the keys creating a successful, profitable, and stable business. The power of the personal touch is what ultimately seals a business deal. The internet is a fact of life, McCormack acknowledges, but it is no replacement for the old-fashioned business lunch. Our experience, judgment, and human contact are the most important "product"we sell in business.

                In ninety-one short take chapters Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age outlines the basic business strategies and common sense that will help managers, business people, and anyone in company life master any upheavals in the digital economy.

                5 out of 5 stars Ideas are money.......2006-03-14

                The internet does not change everything. Building relationships of trust is still required. Rely on face-to-face personal skills, common decencies like politeness and sensitivity to other people feelings, and the need for human contact.
                1. The best solution is not going to come from the people you have locked in a room. Experience and talent combine too solve a problem and these people are often found externally.
                2. The customers, who will have the most impact on your sales performance, are not your customers now. Therefore, the drive and reality of success is proportional too the number of new customers.
                3. Creativity means connecting two disparate concepts and coming up with a third concept. If people appreciate your creativity, you will be rewarded through out your life. Hire people with talent and creativity rather than skills. Invest in skills as part of the job training.
                4. Regard your job as a project, make a contribution, meet new people, gain some knowledge, and associate with success that looks good. Careers are a continuum of increasingly more important projects.
                5. Schedule to end the day, the same time each day. Learn how to accomplish more in less time (reverse Parkinson Law theory): focus on improving what you do best, arrive an hour early, close the office door, work through lunch, extend "to-do lists" over multiple days, and work on highest priority tasks first.
                6. You only need two or three good reasons to tip a decision one way or another. Don't get caught up into complex decision trees looking for the optimal choice, instead use two or three of the best reasons too make a decision.
                7. The best ideas usually start out as little ideas and grow into big ideas. Big ideas are attractive and they gain the attention of the company and its support; however, big ideas are complicated legally, financially, and logistically; and many big ideas never materialize into reality.
                8. Ideas are money. You should be constantly sharing good ideas with your boss and making your boss look good is health for your career. If good ideas are sitting out in the open, they can be stolen and in competitive environments coworkers will quickly claim the idea is theirs.
                9. An idea must be a recombinant of two disparate ideas. The best ideas are impossible to be stolen. A good idea is so original and creative it cannot survive without the creator of the idea because he understands the concept fully and is the one who can execute it up to its full potential.
                10. The size and dimension of an idea is unknown until you act upon it and see how it plays out in the market place. Let the market place be the judge on the quality of the idea.
                11. In order to get through to the president, you must become friends with the secretary. They are the gatekeepers.
                12. Pay attention to the care and feeding of your enemies. Acknowledge their existence. The richest sources of enemies are your peers, who are competing with you up the corporate ladder. Do love to fight and choose not too fight with your enemies because it distracts from your performance. Benjamin Franklin said, "Do good to thy friend too keep him, and to they foe to gain him."

                4 out of 5 stars Good round-up of common sense in business relationships.......2003-10-31

                This review is of the paperback edition re-published as 'Never Wrestle with a Pig').
                It's not the first book by Mark McCormack I've read. Like the others, its very readable, and gives a collection of homespun philosophies, interspersed with personal ife experiences. There's a strong emphasis on Sales, but 'selling' is surely part of all of our business relationships.
                Just don't believe in the gospel of everything McCormack has to say; there are contradictions, just as life is full of them, such as :
                In Part 8 'When you are in Charge' there is the lesson "trust your 1st impression", whereas in Part 9 'Etiquette for the New Millenium' there is a "caveat about reading people too quickly" - so which is it to be?
                Consider it light reading to just remind you of the good & bad things that you can do to others & they can do to you, and re-adjust & compensate accordingly.

                5 out of 5 stars Good.......2001-01-01

                The title just uses the buzzword "internet" to get your attention. It could have been called "career and business tips," which is basically what it is. McCormack's writing has gotten better since his earlier books, so I found this one good on that account. His tips have a bit more depth here, too. He mentions how his 2nd wife has helped him learn to "stop and smell the roses," and perhaps that's why this book seems less "combat"-like than some of his past books. Plus, his arrogance, that would bleed between the lines in past books was, thankfully, missing. (For example, in earlier books he said, "I made a lot of money at a young age, so I never resented others who did," not considering that perhaps some readers are young and broke, or old and broke, and might resent HIM. And also he said, "99% of people should work for someone else," which conveniently puts him in the elite 1%, and, never mind that through most of history, until the industrial revolution, most people were self-employed.) Anyway, this book is readable and helpful, with some tips I don't think I would have seen anywhere else. He does reuse anecdotes that he uses in other books, but I didnt' mind. If you want a general career-tips book, this is as good as any recent ones I've read recently.

                4 out of 5 stars CLEVER! UPBEAT! TRENDY! LIFE IN THE FAST LANE!.......2000-10-01

                This book is about career management and office politics. It contains a lot of straight-forward, down-to-earth tips for getting along with co-workers, bosses, and clients. This "Arli$$- agent's" clientele includes Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Venus and Serena Williams. What he offers is common sense as applied to a plethora of topics like goal setting, picking up the check, managing time, dealing with enemies, managing your work- just doing business in a "smart" way. Thinking of all those Olympic atheletes who will be returning to their respective countries to assimilate back into the work force, or pursue endorsements or dreams of gold in 2004, it seems to me another astute book about self-management is timely, especially coming from the chief executive of a sport and entertainment conglomerate like International Creative Management. It is a step up from his previous book, "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School". Mr McCormack's book seeks to prepare readers for life in the fast lane, and for success. Interesting! A very interesting presentation.

                3 out of 5 stars Is Mark McCormack Aware of the Internet Age?.......2000-09-01

                I have enjoyed Mr. McCormack's earlier books very much. So I was surprised that I did not find this one very valuable. If you read many of my reviews, you know it is unusual for me to grade a book down to a 3 star rating. Let me explain why I did so in this case.

                First, the title suggests that the book will provide lots of perspective on the Internet Age. Wrong! In fact, there is very little discussion of the Internet. And most of that discussion is in the introduction where Mr. McCormack points out that he doesn't even use a computer. He makes several self-revealing comments. "But let's say I'm a reluctant convert to the Internet gospel." "My only problem is that I don't understand what it will grow into." "I have the luxury of being in the sports business which, as far as I can tell, is one 'industry' that's immune to the Internet." In a few other cases he provides anecdotes from his business career about people overusing e-mail rather than talking to each other by telephone or face-to-face. As a result, he misses important questions. How can his agency develop more business by using the Internet in new ways? So, I think the title is very misleading. Anyone who wants to get practical advice for working with the Internet should avoid this book.

                The second problem I saw was that I saw no important new material in the book. The principles are all covered in his earlier books. You get 90 principles described here in 2-4 pages. The examples are all from the author's business, so you get little sense of other businesses or perspectives that might be best practices. They also reflect a perspective that many may not share.

                Here are some of the subjects:

                Giving Yourself a Reality Check

                Speed, the Defining Factor

                Giving the Workplace a Reality Check

                Office Politics

                Acquiring a Power Base

                Promotions, Demotions, and other Career Hiccups

                Rules for Deal Makers

                When You Are in Charge

                Etiquette for the New Millennium

                As you can see, this perspective focuses on the larger organization (the kind that fewer people work for these days) and someone who wants to climb up the organization (something that is less important than self-fulfillment and contribution to many).

                The book is at its best when it argues for treating people well, being considerate as though one were dealing with one's neighbor in a small town. That advice is timeless. The book is also excellent in helping to unveil the sources of misconception that cause each of us to overestimate our performance and to misperceive what we need to be doing. I heartily approve of these messages.

                If you have read Mark McCormack before, I recommend you skip this book. It will add almost nothing but occasional nuances to what you have learned from him already.

                If you have not read him before, I suggest you read one of his earlier books instead. What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School is a classic.

                In either case, I suggest you skip this one.

                If you insist on reading this book, focus on parts one, three, six, seven and nine. They are the most helpful and appropriate for today.

                Ask yourself after you read this book then "Who are the people who can provide relevant perspectives that are relevant for today?" Getting the right advice often means asking the right person.

                Some of the entries in this cookbook seem a little odd (dishes from other countries, etc), but overall the recipes in this book are exciting and flavorful. Since these recipes aren't necessarily "local" food, some of them will be new even to Arizonans (of which I am one).

                          Book Description

                          For most of us, investments and stock portfolios seem part of a frightening and foreign world, limited to those wealthy enough to be able to afford high-priced accountants and brokers. In this book, investor James E. Kearis proves that this picture is wrong. Kearis leads readers through his three-step plan in easy stages. First, the investor must choose a reliable newsletter, and then a good no-load fund. After that, readers track the progress of their funds using technical analysis-the same system many Wall Street professionals use. The cost can be as little as -35 per year and 30 minutes per week, while the profits can be dramatic.

                          Book Description

                          Developed at warp-speed and designed for overwhelming victory, the Desert Storm air campaign lit up the skies of Baghdad and changed strategic thinking forever. Now, John Warden - architect of the Desert Storm air campaign - and his partner, organizational consultant Leland Russell, have applied this proven approach to success to another kind of intense competition: the fast-changing world of 21st century business. Understand why the Prometheus Process is vital in today's world of crisis.

                          General H. Norman Schwarzkopf gave a ringing endorsement to John Warden's new book, Winning in FastTime, with co-author Leland Russell. David Halberstam's new book, War in a Time of Peace, suggested Col. Warden should have been on the cover of Time following the Gulf War

                          The system - Prometheus - is a mindset and a method for rapid, decisive strategic action. Its essence is simple: think strategically, focus sharply and move quickly. Leaders and managers of big-cap, mid-cap and startup companies, in high-tech finance, health care, and many other industries, have successfully applied Prometheus to meet the same kinds of challenges that you face.

                          Now, through clear, step-by-step directions and dramatic, behind-the-scenes stories, Winning in FastTime will explain Prometheus to you. Whether you are a CEO, a manager, a project leader, of simply a dedicated employee, this book will help you:

                          *Transform your organization into a nimble, market-leading winner;
                          *Design a Grand Strategy that everyone from the boardroom to the front line can share;
                          *Shape tomorrow...before it shapes you.

                          Winning in FastTime has a powerful message. You can control your destiny...if you are willing to shed yesterday's thinking about business strategy and organization...move fast and decisively...and make the future what you want it to be. Welcome to the world of Prometheus.

                          5 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-07-05

                          From a business stand point I love this book. There are many tools that I can use and many ideas worth thinking about. However, I remember that the author began critizing clausewitch in the book. Totally unfounded and disrespectful, the guy hasn't even got a oppurtunity to defend himself since he has been dead for some 200years.
                          In my opinion the author sets his own work to highly, his ideas hasnt matured ayet but they are on a good way in doing so. As from a businessman myself his examples around business are sometimes funny and unrealistic. Maybe they were in a hurry to finish writing the book and let quality slip a bit.
                          However, my biggest complaint about this book is his critisim of clausewitch and his ideas about Center Of gravity. The author says that there exist many Centers of Gravities while he says clausewitch only said that there were one. This is totally wrong, clauswitch never said so. Clausewitch did more work to "shoot at a persons heart" concentrating on one particular point....which is nothing wrong cause you only need to hit the most important center of gravity to kill.
                          The author does however present an very itresting idea of system overload where you hit all the center of gravities at the same time.
                          Overall, this book is fantastic!!!
                          And I really hope on a sequel to this book, it would be awesome!

                          John Warden has gathered a few stories and other materials to describe two or three interesting, yet rather simple concepts: Determine your desired outcomes, understand the system you are trying to influcence, act on the points where you can leverage your efforts, and drive the process down throughout the implementation engine. Nothing really new. Just a different title. This book is intended to sell his services. It says this is the method. It doesn't say here is how to do this. For the most part I didn't get anything useful to me.

                          5 out of 5 stars How to think strategically and then execute passionately.......2006-08-30

                          In this volume, Warden and Russell propose "a new way of running an enterprise in a warp-speed world." Those who have already read Sun Tzu's The Art of War will soon realize that Warden and Russell also read it and, indeed, read it with great care. They agree with Sun Tzu's emphasis on the importance of speed, applying maximum force at an opponent's point of vulnerability, and preparation. (Re the last point, Sun Tzu insisted that every battle is won or lost before it is fought.) Given Warden and Russell's military background, it is understandable why they would frame their ideas within a military context and invoke military nomenclature. They assert that what they offer -- the Prometheus Process - "is a mindset and a method for rapid, decisive strategic action." However different military history's most successful leaders have been, all of them had this same mindset.

                          Why Prometheus? Because he realized that "man could prevail against stronger, faster adversaries only if he could outthink them; thus his first gift to mankind was forethought, the capacity to think ahead." Later, he realized that forethought alone was insufficient; man needed something else: fire, "a source of energy and light so important that the gods kept it for themselves." So Prometheus stole it and gave it to man. In this volume Warden and Russell explain how forethought and fire (passion) "fuel high-performing organizations. Those whose leaders "think strategically and execute passionately have the ultimate competitive advantage - the power to spark their own success, illuminate the future, and ignite the energy of all of their stakeholders." In other words, the spirit of Prometheus is to create the future rather than await it with fear while others create it. Warden and Russell explain how to plan and then execute initiatives which are guided, informed, and sustained by that spirit. To them, winning in "FastTime" requires leaders to decide what they want their organization's future to be, and then make it happen faster than the rate of changes in their organization's competitive environment.

                          They offer a step-by-step plan which begins with "designing the future" in terms of its environment, what it will look like, which guiding precepts are needed, and what the "measures of merit" will be. They explain how to select appropriate "targets" for ultimate success, how a campaign to achieve success can proceed with parallel campaigns which are organized and coordinated for success, and then how to "finish [the campaign] with finesse." In essence, this is the Prometheus Process which, as Warden and Russell note, occurred to them as a benchmark for "a new solution for doing business in the hyper-speed age" as they observed the Desert Storm air campaign in January of 1991.

                          I was especially interested in what Warden and Russell have to say about several core concepts which are relevant both to the business world and to the military. For example, "Prime Directives" which are so important that violation of them is intolerable. They define an organization and everyone involved in it, top to bottom. Prime Directives imply a promise and a commitment: "This is who we are, this is what we do, and this is how we do it." For years, all GE executives carried with them a laminated card on which "Jack's Rules" were listed. Warden and Russell recommend no more three or four. "If a rule is considered important, but violating it is not grounds for dismissal, then it doers not rise to the level of a Prime Directive. It is something more temporary - a Rule of Engagement. Like Prime Directives, Rules of engagement are there to be followed, but they may chance over time when circumstances warrant. Rules of Engagement are useful in establishing boundaries for behaviors and decisions within a specific operations context."

                          The complete Prometheus Process is probably not appropriate for all organizations at each stage of their development but the mindset that underlies its insight and power seems to me appropriate for decision-makers in any organization. Warden and Russell correctly stress the importance of seeing with absolute clarity the desired future, whatever its specific nature may be, then creating that future faster than the rate of change within the given organization's competitive environment. They advocate what they call "Instant Thunder," high-velocity initiatives requiring strategic thinking, a sharp focus, and especially, speed. A winning strategy and an integrated plan to execute it will enable an organization to create its own rules (terms of engagement) rather than be limited by rules dictated by others.

                          With regard to "Centers of Gravity," every organization has them. Warden and Russell correctly emphasize the need to understand what they are and how they operate, then leverage them to maximum advantage. However, in today's business world change is the only constant. The nature and extent of a given organization's Centers of Gravity will change continuously, and sometimes unexpectedly because of external circumstances.

                          It is certainly possible to win in FastTime but also to lose. For many organizations, harnessing the competitive advantage of Prometheus - to think strategically and execute passionately -- may well prove to be the difference between success and failure.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great practical advice from America's top strategic thinker.......2001-11-26

                          John Warden was the architect for the most successful campaign in the 90 year history of air combat. He has brought his insights to the corporate world. A truly original thinker, Warden not only thinks outside the box but helps others do so. Highly recommended for leaders at all levels and for courses at business schools and corporate universities.

                          5 out of 5 stars If Sun Tzu had been an entrepreneur:.......2001-10-25

                          If Sun Tzu had been an entrepreneur this book would have been written centuries ago.

                          Using a concise war-winning paradigm, Warden and Russell have successfully captured the essence of designing a business strategy that will work every time. There are three things that make this book a proverbial "must read."

                          - It cuts to the chase by explaining what a business strategy needs to provide to everyone in the organization and does this in way that everyone from the mail clerk to the CEO can understand.
                          - It proves the KISS principle doesn't have to produce a "Business for Dummies" approach.
                          - You can start reading the book on Monday, finish it on Tuesday, begin to institute change on Wednesday, and by Friday be making a difference.

                          Frankly, I think it's the best book I've read since "Thriving on Chaos" by, Tom Peters.

                                4 out of 5 stars A must for Six Sigma starter, and leader.......2004-03-01

                                The name says it well - this is a book for leader who want to know what Six Sigma is, and in particular, all (and I mean ALL) the other management issues for starting Six Sigma.

                                Obviously this book will not cover the detail technical aspect of Six Sigma (like the statistics knowledge,etc), but this book cover all the useful information for Six Sigma - its history, what is Black/Green/Yellow Belts, what is DFSS,DMAIC,etc.. It also covers information not available in other Six Sigma books - change management, Belts selection, communication to the organization, etc... I will say this single book must be the very first book for all people who wants to know this popular management topics, before going into other academic or technical details.

                                5 out of 5 stars No other single source offers more or better information.......2004-01-25

                                Twenty-eight people contributed material to this book, including Thomas Bertels who also served as editor. What we have here in a single volume is a focus on "the critical factors that can make or break the implementation of Six Sigma in an organization." The contributors identify, explain, and then support these principles with real-world experiences and examples. "By placing Six Sigma in this context, this book will, in fact, be useful for any executive, manager, or employee who wants to understand how Six Sigma can help address the particular challenges of their organization." This book was written with empathy for non-technicians (such as I) as it responds to questions such as these:

                                * What is Six Sigma?
                                * Why Six Sigma?
                                * Why NOT Six Sigma?
                                * Where and how to begin?
                                * Whom to involve in Six Sigma initiatives?
                                * What is senior management's role?
                                * Major cultural barriers and how to overcome them?
                                * How and when to implement Six Sigma program?
                                * How to measure progress?
                                * How to sustain process improvement?

                                My own rather extensive experience suggests that all organizations can improve HOW they conduct business. Some processes may involve development of new products or services, others production and/or distribution, and still others order processing. Whatever. Not all organizations, however, need a full-blown Six Sigma program. In fact, a majority of such programs either fail or fall far short of expectations.

                                Among the many substantial benefits of this book is the guidance it provides to decision-makers when they struggle to determine the nature and extent of process improvement initiatives needed. You don't need a full-blown Six Sigma program inorder to, for example, reduce cycle time while improving first-pass yield. Among the most valuable chapters in this book are the last two. With appropriate modification, the principles, strategies, and tactics in both Chapter 24 ("Measuring and Auditing Results") and in Chapter 25 ("Developing Change Leadership Capacity") are relevant to any organization, regardless of size of nature. In my opinion, each of these two chapters (all by itself) is worth far more than the cost of the book but the value of both is even greater, of course, when their material is absorbed and digested at the conclusion of the sequence of chapters. I also want to commend the remarkably informative Foreword, Preface, and Introductions well as are three appendices: "Basic Six Sigma Concepts," "Case Study: Six Sigma in Small and Medium Enterprises," and "DFSS Case Study."

                                Previously, I have reviewed and praised the works of Forrest Breyfogle, Subir Chowdhury, George Eckes, and Peter Pande, each of whom has written brilliantly and eloquently on the subject of Six Sigma. I continue to recommend their works without hesitation or qualification, as I shall now do also with Rath & Strong's Six Sigma Leadership Handbook as well as the three Rath & Strong Pocket Guides and the Six Sigma Road Map. Given the importance of process improvement, and given how many hours and dollars can be saved by even one improvement, it makes sense to obtain resources such as these and then derive maximum ROI from each.

                                5 out of 5 stars Practical Guidance for Leaders.......2003-03-06

                                This is the best practical guide out there. It is not a pocket guide like most of Rath & Strong's publications but it is no less practical. The book is written by a group of authors who work day-to-day actually implementing Six Sigma in a variety of organizations and clearly reflects their practical orientation. In addition, there are a number of indepth interviews with corporate CEOs and other senior leaders who have successfully used Six Sigma. One of the strengths of this book is that it not only covers the technical issues associated with Six Sigma implementation but also offers practical guidance in areas like change management and cultural impact. This handbook is a must read both for anyone thinking about implementing Six Sigam and for those already deeply involved.

                                5 out of 5 stars Perfect Overview.......2003-02-20

                                This is the most complete Six Sigma overview I have ever read. Not only does Rath & Strong write from a team of everyday Six Sigma trainers and consultants, but this book also includes high profile interviews by industry leaders such as Dr. Juran (Juran Institute), Dr. Mikel Harry (Six Sigma Academy) and Robert Galvin (Motorola). If you do not have this book, you are not serious about Six Sigma.

                                  I read this book and then passed it on to other friends. Each of them, from children to an 85 year old, said that it was such easy reading and written just like someone was talking. It is good for any age. The illustrations were kind of "down home", too. I would recommend this to anyone.
