OK, now I know to read reviews! A better title for this book would have been, Life Coaching Educational Options. This book appears to have been "cut & pasted" from the Internet. I bought it as a less expensive option than coaching school, not to read a list of schools!

The "book" is a great list of schools that have easy-to-find websites. The list compiler probably spent a full day or two on www.google.com to find, block, cut and paste this "book."
The title is very deceptive!

On the flip side though, $12.95 + S&H is not a bad price for a reminder that the world is filled with unscrupulous folks! From this perspective the book was well worth every penny!

Perhaps the author could next compile a list of porn sites, call it a book and title it "How to Have a Loving Relationship."

I was robbed. It is nothing more than a compilation of titles. I was looking for the practical side of coaching. I do not feel I need more training. I feel that the author merely took lists from the Web and stuck it in book form. The book is in the trash. I hold a master,s in education. I have lifelong experience!I was just looking for the nuts and bolts of where to meet and what fees to charge, stuff of that nature. I think I will write the real book of how to become a life coach with practical advice.

There's no value added here. The author simply compiled a bunch of web pages for various coaching programs. This is easily done using google. It's worth something if you don't know anything about web searching, don't have access to the internet, or are going away for a week and want to leave your computer behind. However, in all cases she refers the reader to the webpage for further information. The most disappointing thing of all is that she added nothing. The title is misleading because the book offers nothing about how to train at home or the process of training at home or even how long it might take. She did no research.

Not worth my time.......2003-08-29

This book is nothing more than an expensive pamplet. 90% of the book is information readily available via web sites. It would be more helpful had she included surveys or ratings of the coach training programs. Maybe even evaluations. She simply regurgitates what is available at the web sites. I expected more written text (each of the 90 pages has about 1/2 page of text). I expected examples, suggestions about how to go about training to be a coach while keeping your day job. Basically, the book is a yellow pages for coaching programs with maybe 5 - 1 page overviews of real live coaches. very disappointing....

If you're new to life coaching, this book is an excellent starting place. I think it is probably a good resource for practicing coaches too! Michelle McGarry has outlined the main distance learning coach training programs in an easy-to-browse-and-compare format. It's definetely not a how-to life coaching book, but a resource for coaches.

Descended from early Spanish settlers--known as the Californios--McMahan comes from a culinary tradition that spans backward through the gold rush and the missions to Mexico and Spain. "Chiles are in our blood, my grandmother told me," McMahan writes, "I pictured rivers of dark chile flowing in our veins." That river of chiles flows not only in the veins of the Higueras, but throughout the history of cooking in California. Beginning with the Spaniards who, by necessity, borrowed culinary traditions from everyone from the Moors to the Indians, and merging with Mexican food drawn from Aztec and other Indian culinary traditions, Rancho cooking evolved as it was carried north through the Spanish territories in California. The Spanish brought with them their favorite foods--tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, corn, and of course chiles, to name a few--and the settlers perfected the art of barbecuing, which was so well suited to their outdoor lifestyle.

What will strike readers first about this book is that the cooking represented is a far cry from the typical Mexican fare we're used to. This food has a sophistication far beyond smashed beans and rice. Olives, figs, fresh herbs, squash blossoms, and pumpkins appear with surprising regularity, and olive oil, not lard, is the fat of choice for cooking. Of course you'll also find many of the dishes that we think of as standard Mexican fare--enchiladas, tamales, quesadillas--but all have a distinctly Rancho touch. Enchiladas are filled with seafood and napped with a velvety tomato-chipotle sauce, quesadillas are stuffed with squash blossoms and epazote leaves, and tamale dough gets extra flavor from olive oil in addition to the usual lard.

I checked this out from my library and just had to get my own copy. McMahan spends a lot of time telling stories about her family history and the food memories particular to her California upbringing. The recipes themselves are straightforward, simple, tried-and-true, and delicious. I recently tried the recipe for spicy chicken at a barbecue and got great reviews--the chicken was moist, the preparation was simple, and the flavor was complex and satisfying. One of my favorite cookbooks of all time.

Best Recipes Ever.......2006-08-05

In my 30+ years of cooking and buying cookbooks, this is the first cookbook I have found that every recipe is perfect. Want to have a successful dinner party where every guest goes home thinking you are the best cook ever? Then buy this book. Not only are the recipes fantastic, but you will find yourself completely mesmerized by the splendid history of the Californios and their small, but amazing, time period in California history.

Delicious: I Canýt Wait To Tryout Her Recipes.......2004-02-04

Cookbooks have a critical audience. A five-star book must not only have recipes that produce great dishes, but recipes that read well, producing in the reader's mind a dish that the reader can virtually see and taste. A great cookbook is also more than just a listing of recipes grouped by beef, chicken, and desserts. California Rancho Cooking hits on all these points. Through these recipes we get a glimpse into an early Californio family and through them into early Californio history and life. An additional benefit is that the author lets you in on how she modifies recipes into something new and different. As a cook myself, I know that this is how you really advance in your understanding of the art of cooking... and the fun of cooking.

Two recipes especially piqued my interest in this regard: Chilena Pie and the old stand-by and oft poorly made, Chiles Rellenos Con Queso. Her (family's) Chilena Pie makes me ache to get started. In addition, I've already got thoughts on how to (hopefully) make improvements. For those who are similarly inclined, always make the base version first so you really understand the baseline, be careful you do not overuse a individual spice, and never try out your new creation with company first.

For me, Chiles Rellenos in gringo-style restaurants are awful; the coating is reminiscent of white bread and then the poor things are covered in a bland ranchero sauce. McMahan's basic version is akin to mine, but her variations of wrapping them in tortilla is great, and I love the idea of the breadcrumbs. What great ideas. All I can add is to consider that you have other stuffing options than cheese. Oh, her Chiles Rellenos Con Queso are on page 125; it is listed in the index under cheese, not chiles, not rellenos.

The only areas where I could suggest an improvement are:
- Some of the recopies expect the reader to have the author's understanding of the technique to be used. This expectation should not bother most readers, but a new cook could experience some frustration.
- As one who must watch his intake of fats, especially saturated fat, I appreciate it when the nutritional information is provided. This is really de rigueur for modern cookbooks.
- To roast chiles/peppers, many cooks recommend rinsing the charred chiles under running water. McMahan's technique is to place the charred chiles under a wet paper towel to steam and then to wipe off the charred skin. Both techniques are fast and easy, but I prefer to steam them in a small paper bag or a small covered bowl and use the back of a knife or a spoon to remove the charred bits. It is more labor intensive but there is a lot of flavor in the liquid left over from the steaming that I am loath to loose.

These are very minor points, and I really enjoyed this book.

What a great book. I moved from the east coast to California about 6 years ago and I have been wanting to cook more californian. What a great resource this is to learn not only the recipes but the history of each dish. The stories are interesting, the recipes look relatively easy. I can't wait to start experimenting. I am especially looking foward to homemade tortillas. The only reason I didn't give this a five star rating is because a lot of the recipes are deep fried.

Finally, a cookbook of and about the recipes I grew up with. Thank you, Jacqueline.

My family are descended from Spanish settlers and Native Americans of Northern New Mexico, and these are strikingly similar to the recipes they brought with them into Colorado, and which I grew up with. The stories and recipes of homemade flour tortillas, green chiles, beans, open-faced red enchiladas, fideo and olive oil, to name a few, immediately evoked memories of my grandmother and my own mother in their kitchens, talking about the food and how to "do it right."

This is a book that will speak to thousands of descendientes who, like the Higuera family, have chiles flowing in their veins (the New Mexican green in mine, particularly!), and who have their own cuisine that is neither Mexican, nor Spanish, nor Californian, nor Native American. It is our story told by one of our own, and that makes this book, for me, worth its weight in gold.
