MasterWork : Master of Time.......2007-07-18

MasterWork is divided into two complementary parts. The first portion of the book explores the author's experiences while Dharma Enterprises, a subsidiary of Tibetan lama Tarthang Tulka's Tibetan Nyingma Institute. All of the projects under this foundation's umbrella followed what would later become known as the "Skillful Means" method.

Skillful Means aims to get rid of work apathy while increasing self confidence, self esteem, and personal energy. Simply put, this method charges employees to give just a little more attention and commitment to their work and in return find themselves feeling more valued and content. Like the other projects undertaken by this group, Dharma Enterprises achieved a good deal of success using this method.

For those new to Skillful Means, the second portion of this book goes into more detail about the concepts and how they can be useful in any business. Of particular significance are the exercises that can be undertaken either by an individual or by a team of employees. Throughout much of this material, the author points out how this method will aid the individual while also helping the company.

Buddhist ideas in a business application.......2000-03-28

This is terrific introduction to Tibetan Buddhist ideas that are easier to understand because they are expressed in the anecdotal situations of running a printing business in the 90's. The author is candid and unpretentious, speaking clearly about the ups and downs of applying some ancient wisdom to his work, ideas that have come from a genuine buddhist master, but still had to be applied by someone who, despite considerable experience in business, was still a student of applied Buddhism. I like the genuineness of the author, and the feeling of the relationship with the teacher...this book is fun for those of us convinced there is something in Buddhism of great value, but not sure how to bring that something directly into our daily lives.

New ideas on mastering time.......2000-03-18

This is a great book because of how it brings together ideas that are usually kept in separate compartments. The author is the student of a Tibetan Buddhist teacher, and about ten or twelve years ago he and some other students started a printing business. The idea was to use Buddhist teachings in the business, especially some principles that they call "skillful means," and to see if they could make the business more successful.

It seems like it worked. The business did really well, even though they started with a few strikes against them, and they had a good time too (not fun exactly, but a sense that their work had real value and was part of their spiritual path.)

All that makes for interesting reading. But the real point of the book is to share some of the lessons they learned. That's the part that seemed really rewarding. Skillful Means involves a whole approach to time and to taking responsibility for your life and for getting the results you want, in your work or anywhere else. I'm already experimenting with some of the ideas, and they make good sense, and have an immediate impact.

I don't know if all this will translate well into everyone's job, but I can see the benefit, and I feel like I've just scratched the surface. The author is really excited about the ideas in this book, and I am too.

Like A. Abruzzese, I too did not know of The Gilroy Garlic Festival. So I just had to buy the book because as my dad has told me, "It's just like being there."

Before I got this book, I didn't know there was such a thing as the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival- now I'd love to get the chance to go sometime!

This book includes garlicky recipies of all different types and of all different levels of difficulty. As a vegetarian, I wished there had been more meatless recipies, but I recognize that it's not the "Vegetarian Garlic Lovers Cookbook". It might not have as many recipies as some other garlic-specific cookbooks, but the recipies are all submitted by participants in the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, so they are all unique. Certainly recommended for garlic lovers everywhere.

I am an intermediate to advanced Excel user, so my review may reflect that level. As others have said, it looks like MS rushed this book to the market, evidenced by so many errata, which can be disappointing especially when the solution is wrong. On the other hand, there are some very interesting and genuine uses of various Excel functions to solve business problems.
I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners. If you're trying to learn Excel, this is not the book. It is not a book to teach excel, but a book to teach you what you can do with Excel to solve everyday problems, given you're familiar with the mechanics of excel.
I would recommend it with these caveats. And getting Walkenbach's book on Excel functions along with this would be very helpful in my opinion. Best of luck in your endeavors.

I have read many books in excel, but this book is really the most beneficial and excellent book I've used in my life. It is full with practical not theoritical examples. and you can benefit form it in your work.

Overall, I like this book, even though it is somewhat confusing, both in scope and in the target audience.
The techniques of "naming the range" or writing the "if" formula are certainly targeted for beginners, but most of statistical tools are normally used by more advanced users.
The worst thing, though, is that the book is full of errors, both typos and mistakes in problem solutions on the disk. I consider myself an intermediate user, so finding an error in "instructor solution" was more like an additional challenge for me, but for the beginner this could be very frustrating.
On the positive side - I really liked the idea of problems in the end of each chapter; so many books just give you the theory and then you do not know how to solve a real life problem. For most of chapters, I knew the tools, but still had to spend time figuring out the best way to implement it for problem solving.
Very practical book, good for an intermediate users. Just be aware of the typos !

This college-level text is also useful to business and IT professionals because it provides a refresher for decision techniques that are the foundation of a number of disciplines. The book is divided into two parts: (1) deterministic methods, mainly focused on linear programming and optimization, and (2) probability and queuing.

What makes this book valuable to the practicing professional is that it uses one of the most common business tools, Microsoft Excel, and shows how to apply this tool to real world problems. The accompanying CD ROM comes with TreePlan for developing decision trees and CrystalBall for Monte Carlo simulation, as well as workbooks that are used to support the plethora of realistic examples used throughout the book.

Although the book is business-oriented and better suited for operations analysis and MBA students and practitioners, I've used it as a reference for project planning, computer system capacity planning and performance analysis, and IT security risk management - these practical uses of the material show the value of the book in the real world. The supporting web site that the author maintains has materials for lesson plans, errata and additional resources that make this book particularly valuable for the academic and business environments.

Narrating the dreadful events from the vantage point of a child and making them sound so incredibly interesting it's a feat by itself. The author had my attention immediately and made me yearn for more. I had to finish it all in one reading and yet I did not want it to end. All the stories are superb.
I wish people in power,along with those who get satisfaction in creating turmoil through wars, would wake up and find other means of peaceful coexistence!!!.Ms. Psyhogeos, presents her case eloquently and kudos are in order!!!

A glimpse of a forgotten world through the eyes of a child........2004-09-15

This was a book I could not put down once I had taken it up. The author's childhood memories provide a valuable historical insight into conditions in rural Greece during the horrors of the Second World War and the subsequent Civil War. The author captures perfectly the limited range but vivid experience of childhood.
Most memorable are the moving pen portraits of unforgettable characters: such as the tragic "Lady in Black", of whom it was said that "The history of a nation is written on her face", and the sadistic former collaborator "Mister John", who dominated a small town during the Civil War, and killed the poor and unfortunate at a whim for his own amusement.
It is not surprising that the author, who emigrated to the USA from such a background, found her new home a land of freedom and opportunity. Yet it is disappointing that she never drew any conclusions from the fact that the likes of "Mister John" were sustained in their authority by the US Embassy, which exercised effective control over Greece at the time, and which ran concentration camps every bit as brutal as those of the Nazis, and which governed the country through former Nazi collaborators such as "Mister John"; and all in the name of preserving freedom and democracy.
Still - this was not written as a history book. As a collection of childhood reminiscences it is unbeatable.

A FANTASTIC BOOK.......2004-08-16

I'm in Greece for the Olympics and going by a book exhibit I purchased this book because I liked the title and I thought it will make a pleasant read while going from one event to the next.I was thrilled by it and I couldn't wait to get into a computer and write this. What a fantastic story!! How beautifully one expresses recollections of childhood.I doubt that I would've liked to have had the sad experiences the author narrates of her childhood, nonetheless, I would've loved to have had the talent to write such a poignant book.I will recommend it to all my friends, it is a story that should be read...Wish I could write more about it but I have to go to my next event which is Basketball. READ PLEASE : REACHING FOR THE SKY: CHILDHOOD RECOLLECTIONS OF WAR AND PEACE, I can guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy it!!

The best book I've read this year!.......2004-08-09

Indeed it is the best book I've read this year and I read a lot. I was given the book as a birthday gift by a friend and I thank her for her wonderful taste. I've read it on a flight to Brussels and I could not put it down. The emotions the author expressed throughtout the book kept me captivated. It is difficult to choose few of the short intertwined stories (they'are all of high interest), but if I have to pick only two I will opt for the one on "first love" and the other on "Dick" the author's dog. Well, I cannot say enough for this exceptional story, the sentiments of a little girl towards war and its results is a cry for PEACE and BROTHERHOOD, the ruined dreams and lost childhood innocence, touch deeply the heart. I loved it! I wish there were many books like this. Beutifully narrated, eloquently expressed! Congratulations to the author and many thanks Anne for making my birthday and travel so pleasant!!!

Promise of book unfulfilled.......2004-07-25

I wanted to love this book but I couldn't. The author is obviously intelligent, well educated, and a perfectly fine writer (technically speaking), but for me, she lacks the ability to convey the full depth of wisdom and understanding that these rich experiences must have imprinted on her. The book is a series of short stories that, while interesting, did not truly touch my heart. Given the great breadth and depth of material Ms. Psyhogeos had to work with, I feel she could have done much better.

Right up there with the Readers Digest..........2004-03-03

...for flat, uninspired writing. This really should be called 'Sophie, but Mostly Me, Even though You Couldn't possibly care about me, and still won't on the last page.'

I know I sound bitter and bitchy, but I was deeply disappointed by this book. Even the back cover has bad grammar, and misleads readers into thinking they're going to learn about Sophie. Instead, we get 20% old information about Tucker, and 80% information about how starstruck the author still is.

Sophie and Me:Some of These Days by Lois Young-Tulin.......2002-02-16

I was very interested to read only the third book about the late, great Sophie Tucker. Not for nothing was she called "The First Lady of Show Business" and "The Last of the Red Hot Mammas". For those who have read the other Tucker books, there is not a lot that is new. Young-Tulin borrows heavily from Sophie's own memoir "Some of These Days", some of it used as supposed dialogue between herself and Sophie. The author also borrows from other sources such as my CD booklet notes for the CD JAZZ AGE HOT MAMA without giving credit.

I would still urge any and all to buy this book to learn about the great lady who set the stage and made the rules for all who followed . Young-Tulin has a great deal of affection for Sophie Tucker and tells the reader some family stories that have not been in the other books. She also includes some good photographs that we have not seen. The color cover photograph taken for Sophie's 50th year in show business should be enough to sell the book.

This book belongs on your self if you are interested in one of the greatest of all performers of world show business in the 20th century.

Regrets, Sophie Had A Few.......2001-11-14

An easy read that exposes the complexity of stardom even before we were obsessed with stars as we are today. Sophie Tucker was obviously a sad woman underneath her bravado. It is fortunate that the author reached deep enough in to her past to see that her mentor was as full of faults as the rest of us real people, if not more. Thorougly enjoyable.
