5 out of 5 stars indispensable education for those who want to make it.......1999-02-03

The most comprehensive work ever written in this subject. Throughout reading it or learning from it one feels that the author has not only learned it from textbooks but mastered it through tough deals, negotiations. Reccommend to every aspirant who wants to become a player in this field. This is a treasure for those non US based applicants who lack the business environment which is natural in the States but still want to make it to a US Stock Exchange

5 out of 5 stars Positive advice offered in a friendly way.......2006-05-09

This is a good-hearted book with several genuinely interesting business stories. It contains useful advice and the kind of ground-level insight that isn't taught at business school. I know Alexi, so I'm probably biased in her favor. But I recommend her book highly to anyone interested in reading about how real people overcome daunting odds to succeed at real companies.

          5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.......2006-05-03

This short book is surprisingly literate and very enjoyable, too. The author's bubbly personality infuses the writing with a kind of spirit you rarely find in business books. I would recommend this book for young persons looking to achieve success in marketing.

          1 out of 5 stars Empty.......2006-03-28

I read 6-10 business books per year, and Balls! was the worst one to cross my desk in a long time. The book is written like a high school pep rally - lots of enthusiasm, very little substance.

In fact, I am an avid highlighter - highlighting every key thought to come back to the next time I pick up the book. I didn't need my highlighter for this book. It's for sale in like-new condition.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Description of Essential Marketing Behaviors.......2005-11-28

Balls lays out simply the necessary characteristics a young and growing company must exude in order to market itself through all the copy-cat lookalikes in the market. Utilizing simple, entrepreneurial case examples, the author is able to convey the "Ball" attributes necessary to succeed in business.

          5 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring!!.......2005-08-31

This book is one of the best business books I've read all year - maybe in quite a few years. So often books are packed with ridiculous theories from people that spend far too much time on statistics that may be meaningless instead of living in the real world where it takes creativity and energy and enthusiasm to grow a business and market one really effectively.

If you really want to learn how REAL companies are finding unique ways to stay ahead of their competitors then you need this book. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a business book that actually was a true page turner, one that I couldn't put down. You can also relate to all of the companies since the book includes ideas "you can snag" from all sizes of companies and all industries. It's about time a book like this came along.

              Book Description

In the late 1980s, as the empirical appeal of macro-economic exchange rate models began to fade, a few people including Professor Charles Goodhart at the London School of Economics and researchers at Olsen & Associates in Zurich, started to collect intra-daily exchange rate data. The resulting database provides new insight into the foreign exchange markets and thereby opens up previously unexplored avenues of research. Intra-Daily Exchange Rate Movements presents an extensive study of the Olsen & Associates database and is one of the first monographs in this exciting new area.
This book aims to provide a systematic study of the characteristics of intra-daily exchange rate data as well as an empirical investigation into different approaches of modelling the exchange rate movements. First, the author describes empirical insights, which range from the distributional issues of exchange rate data to the impact of macroeconomic fundamentals and institutional characteristics. This leads to a survey of the main stylized facts. Using the O&A database, Guillaume then presents a systematic investigation of the empirical performance of three broad categories of models: macro-economic models using an extension of chaos theory, stochastic models including the GARCH and time-deformation models, and technical analysis. The book shows how these approaches can be used to model intra-daily exchange rate movements and highlights some of the pitfalls inherent in such an exercise. In an area where literature remains controversial, this book hopes to trigger further inquiries into the suitability of these different approaches to modelling.

I was disappointed with the projects in this book. It is an inexpensive way to start, but I didn't like any of the results that I got.

Most of the items in this booklet are not precisely to scare. For instance, doilies are crocheted with Size 10 crochet thread resulting in a doilies that look like ones for a real house made out of rug yarn. This is an okay place to start if you are an inexperienced crocheter or don't care much what the results look like. I have adapted one of the bedspread patterns to smaller thread and it is lovely.

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

Although Gandhi presents his episodes chronologically, he happily leaves wide gaps, such as the entire satyagraha struggle in South Africa, for which he refers the reader to another of his books. And writing for his contemporaries, he takes it for granted that the reader is familiar with the major events of his life and of the political milieu of early 20th-century India. For the objective story, try Yogesh Chadha's Gandhi: A Life. For the inner world of a man held as a criminal by the British, a hero by Muslims, and a holy man by Hindus, look no further than these experiments. --Brian Bruya

                  Book Description

Mohandas K. Gandhi is one of the most inspiring figures of our time. In his classic autobiography he recounts the story of his life and how he developed his concept of active nonviolent resistance, which propelled the Indian struggle for independence and countless other nonviolent struggles of the twentieth century. In a new foreword, noted peace expert and teacher Sissela Bok urges us to adopt Gandhi's "attitude of experimenting, of tesing what will and will not bear close scrutiny, what can and cannot be adapted to new circumstances,"in order to bring about change in our own lives and communities. All royalties earned on this book are paid to the Navajivan Trust, founded by Gandhi, for use in carrying on his work.

This book, the autobiography of Mohandas k. Gandhi, the father of modern India, is a must read. if you have any interest in Gandhi, non violence or just want a glimpse into the life of a spiritually guided person, then this book if a must read.

                  5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-06-22

I enjoyed this book. I wish this book was written sometime after India's independence as more important events unfolded later. I also think that the reader needs background on India and its culture to understand some chapters. Overall, a good one!

The book was delivered on time and though it was a used item, it was in excellent condition. No complaints; very satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Story of "experiments" & lessons.......2007-06-01

This book could also be called: "What I learned in the first half of my life"

Not only useful for knowing Gandhi's experiences & character, but will also offer valuable lessons, insight & wisdom.

3 out of 5 stars What is your expectation?.......2007-04-16

Your view of this book will depend to a great extent on the reasons you choose to read the book and the extent of your historical knowledge about Gandhi in particular and the history of India in general.

I must confess that I was disappointed because I was reading the book with the expectation that I would gain a better understanding of Gandhi and his place in Indian history.

The book is not really an autobiography. It covers only a limited period of his life. And those periods are not fully convered. For example, there are references to time he spent in jail in Africa but there is nothing in the book about the details of the time spent in jail or the reasons he was jailed. He only relates bits and pieces of his life.

The book would be much more beneficial to someone who had a strong historical knowledge of Gandhi.

There are many people introduced in the book but no adequate background information on them. There is much discussion about certain events but there is inadequate discussion about the background of the events. This goes on throughout the book. There are many people, places and movements that I did not fully understand because he either assumes the reader knows or in some cases it directs the reader to other publications.

The book is not complete within itself. To truly appreciate the book, you need more backgound information.

Because the book only covers a certain period of his life, I am left to wonder if he changes his thinking as he progresses. Gandhi subtitled the book, "The story of my Experiments With Truth". But there are a lot of things that makes you wonder about what led him to his position on being a father and husband. He seemed to have little concern for his wife or his children.

It was interesting getting an inside look at the man. However it seems much more suitable for advanced study than as a first exposure to the life of Gandhi.

                  3 out of 5 stars Gandhi's Autobiography.......2002-09-08

This would be a challenging read for readers not familiar with the Indian history. Readers who want to read about life of Gandhi will also find this book incomplete since it was published in 1927 and he continued to live for over two decades after that. Most of his more important work was done after 1927. Nonetheless, this is a good insight into Gandhi, the man rather than Gandhi, the public figure.

Gandhi speaks of his evolution into a public figure and his personal experiments. Reader will find contradicting aspects in his personality as he tries to be modest yet appears to be self-glorifying; he ends up compromising the quality of writing. Much of the book is about his experiments with his diet and thus becomes a bit repetitive (and some of the information is quite unnecessary). It can also be a bit confusing since it does not conform to the chronologic pattern as he seems to be jumping time with some of his chapters. He does not give dates at most places making the read more inconvenient. The reader is expected to be familiar with some of his major works and movements thus are not provided a background.

This autobiography reads more like a personal journal than a text. For people who want a broad picture of his life I suggest that you consider a biography by a different author.

5 out of 5 stars Great Truth by one of the greatest man of the century.......1999-03-26

This book gives you a greater insight into the life passage of a greatest man of the century. Gandhi has written in an uninhibited style and flavour. He has never shyed away from letting the user know his entire life history describing each and every minute happenings in his life. A great read for anyone

With incorrect pronunciations and clear lack of voice punctuations (possibly because the author is not a native speaker), this CD didn't make for a good listen. This might not count as Fredrick Davidson's most eloquent work. I felt the rhetoric was weak probably because of lack of emotions and empathy towards the sensitive and life altering episodes in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Although "Gandhi" was pronounced correctly - I was disappointed.

                  4 out of 5 stars A mediocre production.......2002-11-15

This abridged narration of M.K. Gandhi's book is read by an englishman who tries very hard to put on an Indian Accent. Why this effort was taken for a non-fictional work is unclear.

Many of the Indian words and phrases are clearly mispronounced. This work should have been read by someone with some understanding of India and indian terms.

The fake indian accent is rather obvious through-out the production. At times one might even be ammused by this englishmans antics with accents. Gandhi woud not have appreciated this work.

Several events in the book which is considered as required reading in Indian Schools have been dropped. While other less significant events have been included.

This was a standard classic during my college days in 1968. Since Gandhi's teachings so strongly influenced M.L. King and the civil rights movement,as well as for many other reasons, I was amazed to see only one copy available and that the book has not been reprinted. I was looking for an updated edition.

                              Book Description

From the vantage of middle age, Sara recalls with pride and humor her early years of growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm with a twin sister in the 1940s and '50s. This is a personal portrayal of Scandinavian-American parents, siblings, family, and neighbors who painted the rural landscape of western Wisconsin in somber tones of duty and self-sacrifice, yet touched it with hope and grace.

After looking at this book on my bookshelf for years I finally picked it up for a quick glance. I seldom put it down after that. I also grew up in WI but was a city girl in Racine. I didn't know much about life on the farms that dotted the landscape as viewed from the backseat of a car or over the handle bar of a bike. I have to say I was never much curious what went on there. I guess I had as romantic a notion of it as anyone else. Sara De Luca's fine work depicting the life her family lead on their dairy farm was a pleasure to read, enlightening in it's depiction of farm life, and touching in it's complex and beautiful rendering of family and home.

                              5 out of 5 stars A comfort book.......1999-10-21

I am a college student in L.A. who is from (and intends to go back to) Minneapolis, Minnesota. Whenever I get homesick for the midwest I pick up "Dancing the Cows Home" and read a chapter or two and inevitably feel better. I love hearing about her close-knit Scandinavian family and the dynamics of farm life. I can highly recommend this book to any corn-fed, prarie-loving midwestener!

4 out of 5 stars A realistic account of growing up in the midwest.......1999-02-01

This book caught my attention because I grew up on a small farm in Mn. I could relate to many of the stories told by Sara. Especially the story in which the little girls go to the big city. I thought it was interesting that it was Sara's mother who was so tied to the farm rather than the father. I'm glad that her father got a chance to do what made him happy at the end. I'm also glad that Sara made peace with her roots and was able to come back to and love the place that she was so eager to leave.Although I no longer live on a farm I live in the heart of farm country. This memoir took me back to my own wonderful, but rarely easy, days of farmlife. It was the best place in the world to grow up as far as I'm concerned. What a pity that so few people will experience it as more and more cooperative farms take over. The decline of the family farm is a very bad thing for our country. Thank you Sara De Luca for preserving your experience for future generations. The only negative thing that I can say about this book is that I felt it had a rather abrupt ending. It lacked closure for me in some way.

                                Book Description

Since women were first admitted to the Harvard-Radcliffe business program in 1959, they have made remarkable progress in assuming leadership and management positions traditionally held by white men; more recently, African-, Asian-, Hispanic-, and Native-American women and men have joined the professional realm in increasing numbers --with profound implications for organizations. Nevertheless, the statistics still tell a discouraging story: women make up nearly 50 percent of the workforce, but only 16 percent of the corporate officer pool in America's 500 largest companies; for every dollar a white man earns, a black man earns 76 cents; in a recent survey, 70 percent of women cited lack of an influential mentor as a key obstacle to attaining business success. The leading business experts assembled here consider what is behind these statistics and what can be done to change the culture that creates them. Blending theory and practice, statistics and analysis, this three-volume set presents the latest research from the fields of management, sociology, psychology, law, and public policy to shed new light on the dynamics of gender and race/ethnicity in the workplace. The first volume details the corporate paths of women and minorities to date, highlighting continuing challenges and gaps. Volumes 2 and 3 tackle such complex issues as: socialization and how it excludes women and minorities; the impact of affirmative action decisions on practice and policy; the fine line between office romance and sexual harassment; the depth of racial and gender stereotypes; work-life balance; and unwritten codes of power and influence. These volumes also showcase innovative practices in promoting diversity and leadership development. Featuring contributions from such influential authors as Nancy Adler, Gail Evans, and Gary Powell, this set presents a unique collection of perspectives on the dynamics of race, ethnicity, and gender in the workplace, and considers how they both reflect and reinforce the culture at large.

                                      Book Description

Our basic assumption about the law is that it is designed to operate fairly and openly. But with human beings as the ultimate decision makers, how do we prevent discrimination within the legal arena, and how does the law decide whether others have behaved in a discriminatory manner? Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making examines four controversial areas involving people’s perceptions of others—racial profiling, affirmative action, workplace harassment, and hate speech/hate crime—from the perspectives of psychology, decision theory, and the law.

This book's contributing experts raise these critical questions:

                                      In answering them, the book:

Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making invites the legal and psychology communities to work together in solving some of our most pressing social problems.

                                          Book Description

Governments face complex problems in taxing crossborder, intrafirm transactions of multinational enterprises. Such transactions dominate world trade flows and critically affect national tax revenues. However, their values - transfer prices - are set typically inside the multinationals. As a result, governments have established complicated rules based on the arm's length standard to discourage transfer price manipulation.

This book draws on the fields of international business, economics, accounting, law, and public policy as they pertain to transfer pricing. It includes a state-of-the-art review of the economic theory of transfer pricing; an international business approach to multinationals and intrafirm trade in North America; complete outlines of the corporate income tax laws and regulations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as they apply to transfer pricing; a thorough discussion of the roles of the U.S. Treasury and the OECD in developing the arm's length standard; summaries of key transfer pricing court cases; samples of accounting practices and problems; and a critical look at the current tax issues and public policy proposals in regard to taxing multinationals in the twenty-first century.

Taxing Multinationals should be of interest to practitioners, researchers, and policy makers who deal with multinational enterprises, international taxation, and intrafirm transactions.

Perhaps the best (introduction) book on transferprices and multinationals I've ever read. Eden provides a good introduction in the economic theory of multinationals founded on the theory of the firm. Afterwards, she presents the microeconomic basis of the effects of taxation on the production process within the MNE. Propositions for a future taxation system in the EU are made, also the unitary concept is evaluated.
