Book Description
"This book explains state and federal regulations in a way that makes sense,"" Whitford says. ""It gives small business owners a place to start and tells them how to comply with the regulations." Whitford says this resource can save its users time and money. Usually businesses must hire a consultant or lawyer to be sure they are in compliance with safety, environmental and other regulations, or they have to assign employees to learn regulations. With this book, a series of yes or no questions help determine which regulations apply to a specific company situation. Traditionally people would get this information from meetings, associations, insurance companies or by word-of-mouth when others are fined. Whitford says these methods provide only bits and pieces and don¹t answer all questions about regulations affecting businesses. For a company to comply with regulations, owners and managers must know what the regulations are, what they are obligated to do and how they should do it. Kay Nobbe, with HyGrade Excavating of Greensburg, Ind., oversees an effort by her company to ensure compliance with all regulations that affect the business. She contacted Whitford, and he suggested his book as an aid in identifying which regulations apply to them. "I think it¹s been very well written," Nobbe says. "We are trying to become OSHA compliant, and we¹re using it to benefit us in other aspects of our business, as well." Whitford says most people want to be in compliance, and will make the changes necessary when they know how. "This book should give people the peace of mind that if they are inspected, and if they are following the regulations, they should be in compliance for just about everything," he says.

Harvard Business School professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter is the Eartha Kitt of change-management gurus. Just when you think the grand dame has taken her final bow, she comes bounding back onto the scene with a new act that's as shrewd and insightful as anything any young kitten has to offer--but benefiting from decades of wisdom and experience that puts the whole litter to shame. Take, for instance, Evolve!, Kanter's latest in a string of highly influential books on organizational management (including Innovation, World Class, When Giants Learn to Dance, and The Change Masters). Yes, the ubiquitous dot (as in "com") after the E in "Evolve" on the book's cover may suggest to the cynical that this is another old-school change guru weighing in with the obligatory guide to making it on the Net--and months after e-commerce mania has subsided, to boot! And granted, the thumbnail keys to successful I-preneuring that form the book's structure--namely, a willingness to improvise, a desire to network aggressively with other sites, a readiness to create "integrated communities," and a commitment to creating a workplace culture that attracts and retains the best talent--aren't necessarily breakthrough insights, however cogently presented.
But Evolve! stands out among the vast spate of e-commerce how-tos of the past few years because of the meticulous, rigorous research on the part of Kanter and her legion of Harvard Business associates. Here, coupled with Kanter's always-keen prose, that research translates into perhaps the most vivid, probing, and instructive anthology of e-commerce success (and failure) stories yet to appear in one book. Kanter & Co. conducted over 300 interviews, plus surveys with nearly three times as many companies worldwide, to tease out their conclusions on what works and what doesn't when doing business online--with brash start-ups as well as brick-and-mortar giants. That serious-minded, Harvard-quality sleuthing is reflected in the long narratives that make up the meat of the book, detailing the complete online journeys of some of the world's most high-profile companies, from venerable offliners venturing online (among them, Arrow Electronics, Barnes & Noble, NBC, Hewlett-Packard, Honeywell, IBM, Williams-Sonoma, and Sun) to the Net-born (Amazon, eBay, Razorfish, EarthWeb, iXL, Renren.com, and Abuzz, which clearly emerges here as Kanter's pet model of how to do it right in entrepreneurial cyberspace). If you've followed the start-up scene with eagle eyes every day for the past five years, you might already be familiar with these companies' twisting, turning story lines. If, more likely, you haven't, you're in for some illuminating object lessons on what works (and what doesn't) on the precarious, often uncharted terrain of e-commerce--not to mention some really good reading.
Shortly before Evolve! went to press, Kanter added two new chapters to address the latest changes in the e-commerce market. That's a valuable update, but even if she'd skipped the postscript, Evolve! is blessedly free of reckless cybermania. And, unlike many such dot-com how-tos, it's wise enough to know that, far from having completely rewritten the rules of good business, the callow world of e-commerce has much to learn from the offline forbears it often scoffs at. For these reasons, the observations and advisories in Evolve! should transcend the inevitable fluctuations of the e-commerce market in the years to come. In other words, this is the real thing: smart, deeply researched advice from a pro whose talents are evident on every page. Well, except for the rap lyrics she's penned for "Evolve!--The Song," which kick off the book, and run along such lines: "You're not alone, so start placing your bet/On finding lots of partners throughout the Net!" Cole Porter she's not. Then again, maybe they wouldn't sound so lame if only we could get that other old pro, Eartha Kitt, to slip into her catsuit and purr her way through them. --Timothy Murphy

An Organization CAN'T Evolve, It CAN Learn: A Critical Evaluation of a Book Title.......2007-08-24
Choosing the right metaphor is one of the best ways to assure your ideas (if you have any) will endure. Rosabeth Moss Kanter (or her editors) have failed by confusing evolution and learning.
A species evolves by having the old individuals that make up the species die or divide. Individuals don't evolve. Individuals can only learn.
I am always concerned when someone misuses a metaphor, particularly when it figures prominently in their work. If they can't get THAT right, what else have they gotten wrong?
The ideas in the book seem tired to me as well, but I would like to leave you with the above thought as an example of critical evaluation of a books "cover" or title. It is a particularly useful skill for readers who are considering investing time and money on a book before there are reviews.
New Economy Lobotomy & more...........2006-06-20
Author Kanter is the Ernest L. Arbuckle Professor of Business Administration at Harvard (or was when she wrote the book), She has been named as on eof the 50 most powerful women in the world by the TIMES of London. Based on more than 300 inteviews and a global survey of more than 700 companies, the book Evolve! is a study in e-culture, strategy and community. Written back in 2001 -- the book still deserves to be on the shelf of every business exec or entrepreneur in this continually evolving new economy (and at the bargain price it's available on Amazon.com -- add it to your collection now). Kanter talks about talent, change (not just cosmetic) and social evolution...community takes a big role. Perhaps the one element she could have covered better is content-- since so much of what we see today is user generated content and content that is 2-way interactive. Commerce is not a one way street anymore....still the book covers many basics I'm sure you did not learn in B School and it gives insight and strategy into the why's and e-culture and how the Internet fits into the corporate structure of today and tomrorow...or perhaps how it is shaping it....The index is very good and can be used as a reference for making presentations at work or in developing your next-gen digital commerce start-up!
Still relevant for e-business managers in traditional firms.......2005-01-25
This book is to some extent out-of-date. It is written in the dot-com era. And there is indeed a lot of hype on the young start-ups' heroic characteristics such as speed, flexibility, and courage that traditional large companies couldn't compete with in the short run. Today, we all know that these characteristics didn't stand the test of time in a ruthless competitive landscape.
But I'll still recommend this book for a special target audience: People, who are working on an e-business project for a traditional corporation will still get much inspiration from Moss-Kanter's book. Also in retrospect, I find that her best sections in the book were those on describing the tough change management processes that she found in successful "old economy" firms like Williams-Sonoma, Honeywell, and Reuters. In all these companies, a strong conventional company culture made it extremely difficult for the e-business team to navigate towards success. In 2005, many companies have still not made much of their business model online.
This is also a very important book for me personally. I read this book on a vacation to Cyprus in May 2001 just before taking on a long 3-year assignment as an e-business manager for a large industrial firm in Denmark. I experienced most of the difficulties that Moss-Kanter describes in her book.
I find the merit of this book in the very colourful case stories of traditional organizations' struggle with e-business initiatives. The author conducted more than 300 interviews of both traditional companies and dotcoms, successes and failures alike, in a research project before writing this book.
As you may know, Harvard professor Moss-Kanter is a leading expert on change management. Her chapter on the "change wheel" is in a class of its own.

About the author..........2004-03-22
This review is not so much about the book but rather about the author. I had the chance to have Rosabeth Moss Kanter as a Professor for a semester last year while doing an MBA at Harvard. She has an extraordinary personality, full of passion, full of colors and surprises. A fresh, insightful and pragmatic perspective of the world. A Grand lady who constantly evolves with her time. In my opinion, that's why her books, and Evolve! in particular, are so well written and so inspirational for all of us. Grand books are the reflect of Grand personalities. I cannot wait to get her new book "Confidence".
One sided observation rather than an Analysis.......2003-03-09
I thought the naration was terible on this CD, author was not to the point. More of a one sided observation presented as a story rather than a complete analysis.

about professional baking.......2006-11-12
I have use dthis book and was not impressed with the content. I felt that it focused too much on issues that where not as important (ie, milling of flour) yet failed to address in depth the importance of chemical reactions which occur in the baking process. The overall set up of the book is odd as well, compared to other teaching text that are available. And as an aside to the person who wrote this rival Julia Child. I beg to differ try a few more of the recipes then report back. Julia Childs recipes ALWAYS come out perfect!!
Best baking book out there.......2006-09-23
This is the best book on baking I've seen. It is easy to understand and has so many glossy photos and step by step instructions. I'm a pretty bad cook, and I was able to make all of the recipes I tried -- first time! I also really like the professional profile section, and reading about the different pastry chefs. All-in-all, this is a great book. It actually rivals my favorite cookbook of all time, by none other than Julia Child herself. Her's is my favorite cookbook, and now this one is my favorite baking book. Gail Sokol must be the Julia of our generation. And I'm not exaggerating... this really is a great read, and extremely helpful. I have learned so much from it, and have learned that baking is not as scary as I used to think it was. And it actually can be fun! Now that I'm learning how to bake properly, I find it is really quite relaxing. All of the shows on TV make baking seem too sciency and complicated, but Sokol does not. I'd recommend this book to everyone!

Great read.......2006-02-23
This book is very good. It is easy to read and has nice photos. i like the ones in the sauce chapter -- very pretty. I learned alot about healthy baking and chocolate too. I am not a good baker, but this book helped me make yummy desserts and plate them nice too. If I could afford it, I'd send copies to all of my friends for christmas next year. I already bought one for my boyfriend, and he loves it, like i do.
Best baking book on the market.......2006-02-23
I am a chef educator who teaches several introduction to baking courses at a culinary school. Myself and one of my collegues at another institution were interested in using this book, and the publisher was so friendly and inviting. My peer even got to speak with the author on the phone.
The book is fantastic, by the way...by far the best baking text I have seen to date. It is clear, informative, and complete with beautiful pictures and easy-to-follow instructions.
That is compared to Wayne Gisslen's book, which I and several of my collegues use. His approach utilizes much smoke-and-mirrors, unlike Sokol's text.
This book is a great find for professionals and home chefs alike.
One of the best baking texts I have used!.......2006-01-07
I have been looking for many years for a baking text that explains the chemistry and reasons for the exact measurements required to obtain an excellent cake or bread.
Chef Sokol has answered my questions and more! Her instructions are precise and easy to follow and the illustrations are very well done. I am especially impressed on the section on presentation and plating of her exquisite desserts.
As I was studying the various recipes my mouth was watering in contemplation of creating her wonderful cupcakes and breads.
This book fills, a here to fore, vacant niche in libraries of baking and culinary books, and should be on the shelf of anyone serious about cooking, baking or fine foods. A 5+Star Book
A very good baking book.......2006-01-05
This is one of the best textbooks I have seen as a baking enthusiast. It is clear, informative, and concise, a set of rare qualities when dealing with baking textbooks. Many textbooks on the market right now are verbose, use complicated language, have recipes and formulas that do not work, and are generally unusable by the home chef. This is not the case here. A very nice product.
The best baking textbook EVER.......2006-01-05
Gail Sokol's textbook is possibly the best book on professional baking on the market today. I, as a home chef, am extremely interested in baking, but was slightly skeptical of this book, as it is geared towards baking students and not home chefs like myself. However, I found my initial trepidation to be unfounded -- this book is amazing!!! Sokol not only dicusses baking, but delves into the chemistry behind baking, explaining why and how a process, such as gluten formation, occurs. I loved it. Also, there is a healthy baking chapter, which is certainly novel. Sokol shows baking as not only an art, but a science that is well worth the world's respect.
The writing is fluid and easily understandable. It was a joy to read, and I understood everything that Sokol discusses within the text. Not meaning to sounds crass, but Sokol is such a good teacher that she could teach a monkey to bake and he could compete in culinary competitions. This is not to poke fun at Sokol's teaching skills, but to further illustrate how good the book and DVD are.
Additionally, I also bought the accompanying DVD series which was well worth the money I paid for it. Wow. No really...WOW. The quality of the DVD is so professional that it easily could be put on the TV Food Network. Watch out, Rachel Ray! Gail Sokol is certainly a rising star in the baking field.
Now, I am certainly not a professional, but as a home chef, I LOVED this book. As a matter of fact, Sokol's text has inspired me to enroll in a local culinary school. I want to become a pastry chef. As well, having looked at culinary schools, I have realised that a baking text already is in use -- it seems to be the most frequently used text in the industry. Well, I do hope these schools take a look at "About Professional Baking," which truly deserves to be used by all begining baking students.
This textbook is a fantastic read for the baker in all of us; it can be seen as either a professional text or as a well-informed guide for the home chef. You do not have to be a culinary expert to enjoy this fantastic book, which is so beautiful (what with the hundreds of glossy photos and the elegant colors) that it might soon be deemed a "pastry bible." Well done, Chef Sokol, and here's hoping to see you on TV soon!!!

Great Read -A Wealth of Information.......2002-05-16
I just loved Mr. Lux's book about Wall Street and how it takes advantage of people without their knowing. Now, I know why I won't invest in mutual funds again!! The book will be of great help throughout my life. Thank you Ted!!!
Wall Street better watch out a new sheriff is in town!..........2002-04-28
Mr. Lux exposes the little talked about secret wall street doesn't want you to know about. This book could save you thousands of dollars in hidden costs your mutual fund company is taking from you. ...
If I only read this book sooner................2000-11-26
The book by Ted Lux is an insightful journey into the industry of investing. In his book, the author outlines ways to manage your own portfolio without spending a great deal of time and avoiding the expense and bias of the middle man-your local stock broker or mutual fund company. With more and more funds now charging loads to purchase their fund, this book is quite timely. I urge those who have an interest in saving money and investing to read this book. You will be glad you did.
Book Description
Customer Centered Selling teaches you the secret of the world-famous Xerox sales training program. The secret, Robert Jolles reveals, is reversing the conventional selling practice of searching for customer needs. To truly create urgency, you must focus instead on the customer's problems and decision-making process. Jolles provides a systematic, repeatable, predictable approach that teaches you to anticipate and influence behavior as the customer moves through an eight-stage "decision cycle" and ultimately discovers his or her needs. The book includes a series of case studies, activities, and exercises that enable you to better understand the principles being taught, so you can immediately apply them to your own unique scenarios. This book is a "must read" for all sales professionals, sales managers, and managers in need of a disciplined approach to persuading others.
Download Description
"Customer Centered Selling" teaches you the secret of the world-famous Xerox sales training program. For almost two decades, tens of thousands of salespeople have learned the lessons presented here by Robert L. Jolles, the Sales Trainer with the longest tenure working at Xerox Corporation today. The secret, Jolles reveals, is reversing the conventional selling practice. You must focus first on your customer's needs and decision-making process, instead of on the selling process. Jolles provides a systematic approach that teaches you to anticipate-- and influence-- customer behavior as the customer moves through an eight-stage "decision cycle". Only after you understand the steps of this decision cycle, Jolles cautions, are you prepared to match it to your "selling cycle". At the heart of these lessons is the simple but brilliant role-reversing concept of taking an idea and planting it in the mind of your customer-- making the customer believe he or she thought of it first. Jolles teaches a repeatable, predictable selling process that can be adapted or modified to fit any experience that requires the skills of persuasion. The book includes a series of case studies, activities, and exercises that enable you to better understand the principles being taught, so you can immediately apply them to your own unique scenarios. This book is a "must read" for all sales professionals and sales managers and all managers in need of a disciplined approach to persuading others.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best!.......2004-09-08
I've rarely seen a more logical approach to selling. It leaves nothing to imagination, making every step in the process clear and explicit. It even expands on Rackham's SPIN sequence. If you're tired of guessing, this book's for you.
Excellent Across the Board!!!.......2003-08-12
TThis book is terrific...It answered many questions I had about sales approach to b2b selling. If you are selling b2b or your product/service has a high value, you will love the tools this book will give you to succeed! It has great examples, and useful exercises to make the material 'stick'. Rob breaks everything down to minute detail, so everything is duplicatable and understandable. I hope to see an audio version sometime in the future. I love the questioning sequences detailed by Rob and his honest and ethical approach to every step in the sales cycle.
This book also teaches you how to use the selling principles in everything else in life from managing employees to bringing up children. I am already beginning to be more pursuasive with my fiance and my boss. I am loving it!!!
Robert Jolles teaches you very SOUND techniques and not hype like Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar or Joe Girard. I love the fact that he was a senior sales training consultant at Xerox, which is world-known for its investment in sales research and its training methodologies.
Good Book - but its missing that little "something".......2002-07-21
I am pretty new to the world of sales - a reluctant salesman who has realised that selling is central to success in any relationship based endeavour. What I have been searching for is a sales 'system' - a repeatable process that allows you to 'advise' the client for mutual benefit, rather than simply sell him. And Robert Jolles almost hits the mark. He gives you a sales strategy - a strategy with 8 steps in the selling process, that with a bit of practice will make the sales call more of a consultation.
But, for me, the book contradicted its title somewhat. This is particularly evident where Jolles uses the boxing metaphor for selling (he compares selling to you and your client stepping into the ring for a few rounds) and 'bleeding' your client. Now maybe I'm naive, but I think this is what is totally wrong with the sales profession - I don't think you're ever fighting your client, or should be trying to 'bleed' him or her, or make him hurt.
Now perhaps Jolles was simply trying to make the point that the client needs to be fully aware of the implications of his/her problem etc, but it was the way he says it that shows he doesn't have the customers true interests at heart. And to me,its the philosophy of the sales professional combined with sales effectiveness that is critical to building long-term, mutually benefical client relationships.
I would recommend this book to you - it teaches a sound sales process that is repeatable. But for me it missed that extra something.
Takes selling to the next level.......2001-08-18
Clearly defines the steps to making a sale along with the understanding of how and when a customer makes a buying decision. People don't make a large purchase decision until they have a "problem". So if you are selling large ticket items and or programs, then you better understand how to move the decision maker into the "problem" stage. I thought that the author's examples and situations outlined in the book were excellent and really drove home the points he was making. It is an easy read and thoroughly enjoyable!
Repeatable and Predicatable....can you really find that?.......2000-12-23
I have been teaching Rob's methods for close to 2 years at the Univ. of Houston. Rob is a genuine person and his methods work...period. Yet, you cannot just read this book and expect it all to sync the first day. You need to practice this....daily to have the impact required.

--Marc Potish, senior coordinator for professional development, CREC Division of Staff Development, Technical Assistance and Brokering Services
Too often, managers who face downsizing or reorganization must conduct program evaluations without having any background or formal training. This comprehensive resource is a straightforward guide to the concepts and methods of evaluation. It explains each component of the evaluation design--first detailing principles and theories and then showing how to apply them in real-life situations.
Written for any program type or setting, The ABCs of Evaluation shows how to select the evaluation team and how to deal with multiple goals and objectives--including those of the organization, the staff, and the client. Authors John Boulmetis and Phyllis Dutwin describe different evaluation models, illustrate the circumstances under which each model can be used, and offer tips on identifying data sources and collecting the data itself. They also provide a sample report that focuses on the needs of program stakeholders. Throughout the book, there are charts, graphs, models, and lists to help organize, extend, and facilitate the understanding of each evaluation concept.

Good, not perfect.......2000-05-11
The book has many, many good ideas, and the implemetations are easy enough, even though i am new at all this stuff. I would definitely recommend it, and i have only one axe to grind: The writing is kind of overwhelming (i am not a native english speaker) so beware. otherwise, get it.

Book Description
In BOYHOOD ALONG THE BROOK CALLED HORN, William Jeter invites readers to step away from the hectic pace of life and go back with him to a time when no one owned a watch until high school graduation. Jeter's wit and imagination shine through ten vignettes that capture a variety of mischievous childhood capers. Numerous detailed sketches, which accompany every vignette, enable readers to visualize all of the fascinating locations and intriguing inventions of Bill's childhood in the quiet California mountain town of Hornbrook in the '40s. Men and women alike will get lost in their own remembering of childhood adventures as they laugh and cry with Bill, and children will not only be inspired to creative play, but will long to hear their parents' and grandparents' stories of the past.

Boyhood Along the Brook Called Horn.......2003-07-25
I have very close ties and fond memories of rural California during the 1940's. Mr. Jeter was able to capture those memories and put them on paper - a rare gift. As well as enjoying the stories, I found his artwork delightful. I have recommended it to all my friends as: one of those books that makes you very sad when you are finished and realize that you have to leave this young man's adventures behind.
Evocative.......2003-06-30
I read a chapter of this book every night before I go to sleep. It relaxes me and makes me smile. Author Bill Jeter's account of a happy boyhood takes me back to the summers that I spent in his neighborhood -- the California Sierra Mountains -- with my parents and relatives. Jeter writes from the viewpoint of a boy, in rich, descriptive language, and illustrates his adventures with delightful, pen-and-ink drawings. He has captured the high whistle of the winds, the pungent pine smell of forest air, the music of running brooks, and the unspoiled sweep of high meadow. His accounts of hiking, camping out, cleaning a rifle, hanging out at the general store, rafting on the nearby creek, and making his own rafts, backpacks, boomerangs, and kites, restore my faith in children's creativity and craftsmanship. I plan to read this book again and again. It makes me want all children to experience the beauty of growing up in nature, with parents who encourage them to do things for themselves.
Very enjoyable.......2003-06-28
Bill Jeter and I are old college friends and we shared may adventures as young adults.
The sincerity and truthfullness with which Bill recalls his boyhood was indeed refreshing and took me back to my youth many times. In talking with Bill he never refers to himself as a great writer, only a "creative rememberer." I believe that he only has the thought half right, he is a great writer
Loved It!.......2003-06-25
What a great glimpse into simpler times, before a TV in every house, before Game Boy, Nintendo and computers! A time when a kid used his imagination for entertainment. My 8 year old son had a great time reading this with me. We strongly recommend it for summertime reading!
Modern Huckleberry Finn.......2003-06-22
Amazingly enjoyable book! I laughed and I cried as I followed Billy Jeter around in these true reminiscences of a young boys life in small town America. This author captures the essence of being a boy: making discoveries, a boy's imagination, creating adventure, innocent and hilarious mischief.
This was like reading about my own childhood. I could smell the smells, laugh at the laugh's, feel the "scardiness" of getting into trouble. The railroad adventure is a dream I always had, but never had the guts to do as a kid. I lived it finally, vicariously through Jeter's real life description.
His drawings give life to each story, and amazingly some of them look just like the stuff I was trying to create or play with as a kid. Except he did it a lot better.
Read this book if you want to re-live your life as a kid, or perhaps want to see what it should have been like. It has everything: nostalgia, memories, and a glimpse of a simpler and less ccyical time in life.
