I love this book!.......2006-12-15

I have actually only made one recipe from this book, but it is so delicious it it a constant standby on my fall and winter dining room table. It is braised red cabbage which sounds rather boring, but with this recipe, it becomes really wonderful. I have never had red cabbage in any restaurant that tastes this good. I always wanted to try other things, but unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I have too many cookbooks and magazines to contend with and get easily distracted.

Pierre Franey takes you all over Europe to 1, 2 or 3 Michelin starred Chefs, and actually cooks with them to create low fat recipes, or use some that they have already. You will not be sorry.

Best Source for Corporate Board Effectiveness.......2001-12-11

In my role advising mid- and senior-level management of Fortune 100 companies, I found this book by Conger, Lawler and Finegold to be of immediate value.

"Corporate Boards: New Strategies for Adding Value at the Top" is positioned towards people who are perhaps on boards or who are executives dealing with boards. The authors are extremely credible, having dealt with and advised senior leadership from nearly every Fortune 100 company.

This book really brings together in one source all you need to know about building a more effective board - it is filled with real and practical guidelines and actionable how-tos. At the same time, it challenges the current governance approaches, arguing that despite all the "best practices" available, we still have a relatively simplistic understanding of how to build a great board. This book gives the reader more sophisticated insights into what it takes to have an effective board.

The authors also raise a number of issues that are critical given today's environment. For example, are boards solely responsible to shareholders or are there other, equally critical groups to which boards need to be accountable? Finally, the authors discuss the implications of the Internet for the boardroom.

In short, I strongly recommend this book, particularly for those who deal with senior leadership, corporate boards and governance issues.

Insightful and immediately useful. Having served in many of the roles that the book touches upon--CEO, Board Member, Chairman--I find that unlike other business strategy books, authors Conger, Lawler and Finegold provide a straightforward and powerful vision by which today's board can function much more effectively. If my own experience in using this resource within the boards I am involved in is any indication, any board that reads this book and implements its teachings will improve its effectiveness immensely.

I particularly like the balanced view of the legal responsibilities of today's board versus their leadership "voice" for the various stakeholders.

Coporate Boards.......2001-12-01

I am not a businessman, so I haven't read too many books on management, but I certainly am glad I read this one. I'm a scientist in the process of putting together a small biotech company. I have recently been turning to friends in the coporate wold as well as those still in B-school for advice about business structuring. When I asked about developing an effective board, one of them recommended this book by Conger, Lawler, and Finegold....what a education. The book deals with the basics of board structure, but then goes beyond using thier extensive database to craft an in-depth analysis of the inner-psychology behind these fundamental corporate entities. Putting together a solid board of directors has been one of the toughest hurdles for me, and this book has and will continue to be a wonderful resource for me.

This book was recommended by a colleague, CEO of a manufacturing company, with whom I do some exponential thinking from time to time. I can see why he enjoyed reading this straightforward look at internal corporate politics. Miller builds a new model for understanding what is sometimes a very perplexing problem - decoding why people respond the way they do in a given situation.

What I found interesting in Miller's model is that he requires us to "look at ourselves" as part of the stress delivery system in the organization. "If a situation is making you anxious, then there's a question in there somewhere that is yours alone to answer." Miller explains how we all set up triangles to get our way or to spread out the anxiousness so that we don't have so much to handle ourselves. "Learning to manage your own behavior in triangles is probably the single most important thing you can learn about handling workplace politics." So I found this model for understanding why smart companies do smart things to be useful.

What makes the book very readable is the use of stories to illustrate the points being made. The stories are familiar to anyone who has worked in or around large organizations. The layout of the book is also helpful in that each chapter ends with a summary of the major points made. Miller's book is a worthwhile quick read.

If you need to work, you need to read this book........2002-12-17

The examples in this book are so true to life that I instantly recognized characters and conflicts in every chapter. Once I started reading (and it's extremely readable), I began to notice "anxious dynamics" everywhere, just as the author describes them -- in meetings, in office relationships, even in myself. And I've already seen more than once how his suggestions for breaking the anxiety chain can turn an ugly situation around. I recommend this book for everyone who works and especially for those in the ever-so-anxious business of advertising.

Superb biography lives up to it's classic status.......2002-03-19

Published in 1974, playwright Jerome Lawrence's biography of famed American actor/star Paul Muni has been hailed as 'The greatest theatre biography of the [20th] century', and rightly so. This exceptional book recounts Muni's whole life, from his childhood travelling with his parents Yiddish theatre company to his declining years and failing health. The vividness of Lawrence's accounts of Muni's life are due to the fact that Lawrence knew Muni well (Muni's most successful Broadway play was 'Inherit the Wind', co-authored by Lawrence) and most of the information is first hand. After muni's death in 1967 his widow Bella (with the encouragment of Lawrence) began a book on her husband's life to be entitled 'The Men I have Lived With'. But the book was never finished as Bella died in 1971 so Lawrence took what had been written and wrote his own account of Muni's life. Some of Bella's original passages have been included - most notably the story of how she met and married Muni. Lawrence also recounts the history of the Yiddish theatre, the story behind the making of the classic 'Scarface' and Muni's obsessive 4 year search for the story of Alfred Nobel. Lawrence interviewed many of theatre and Hollywood's greats for the book including Luther Adler, George Abbott, Howard Hawks and Bette Davis (a complete transcript of her interview is included in the closing chapters). A fascinating and compelling read about a man who ultimatley didn't know what else to but act.

When Flor Fernandez Barrios's parents consider fleeing Castro's regime, they are labeled gusanos, or traitors. Neighbors shame and taunt them. As I read on, I felt as though it was MY OWN story! I, too came from Cuba at 15 and being the author's age went through most of the same experiences. It's about time that we put it out there for non Cuban-Americans to know. There is NOTHING fun, romantic or exotic about Cuba. Castro's is a bloody dictatorship that destroys human beings! I admire the author for her courage. She has inspired me to some day tell my own story.

The stories in Cuba were amazing. I was transported to Cuba and was right there observing the island, the people, the food, the smells, the conversations, the textures, the pain, the joy, etc.

There were so many times that I had to put the book down because I could not go any further in my emotional state. I even experienced my spirit stronger than I ever have while reading a certain passage. Thank you. It would be nice to know where you are now with your spirituality. Maybe that will be the follow-up book!

I thank God daily for the decision my parents made when sending me alone out of Cuba . Since my parents thought that they could say they were going on vacation, they had also packed to leave with me but the militia was too wise for that and held my mom's and dad's visa at the docks since they had not left everything to the government.At the precise moment they decided to send me alone (8-05-61)on the last cargo ferry that left Havana with sugar,under the care of Pedro Pan Operation. I was starting fourth grade that September of 1961 and I would have gone through the same ordeal Teresa went through. I admire Flor Teresa for the loyalty to her parents and family, for her courage of making the best of the moment and for her maturity at such young age. I believe that young as well as old will get teachings from this book. Teachingsof survival, of meeting with your goals, of distinguishing what is right from what is wrong and of giving a value to the simple things in life. As an adult Flor Teresa must be an extraordinary human being.

The book was a smooth read. Ms. Fernandez-Barrios made me feel apart of her. Her memoir was so vivid. She connected herself to all the ancestrial roots of Cuba. She is an excellent writer. I would love to see more literature by this author.
