I found this book to be very helpful. It articulated an approach to life that I have used for many years, but have not had a term for before now; it is great to learn that all the various pieces of one's way of doing things all fit together. Also, I thought the comparison she draws with ancient Japanese culture is very interesting. I felt a part of a larger group of people, sharing their struggles and their path, as I can very much relate to the difficulty of carving out a non-pre-fabricated career path. She has good suggestions for how to apply her ideas in a practical manner in the workplace, and lots of anecdotal examples, which nicely bridge the gap between theory and practice. I only wish I had encountered this book sooner, as it would have provided needed encouragement.--I now know that my approach to the workplace did end up standing me in good stead, but struggled with an initial period of many years when it looked like my approach wasn't paying off and there was something wrong with me because I couldn't find the right "ladder" to start climbing. I have only one critical comment: While the CONTENT of the drawings is very well-conceived and relevant, I don't like the fact that all the women are drawn as if they were sticking their chests and behinds out, and with shadowing that makes them look like they are wearing excessively tight skirts; This is inappropriate in a book that is supposed to get away from conventional workplace patterns. This book is a very good foundation of MCDA (Multi Criteria Decision Analysis) with all the mathematical proofs behind the theory. The authors give real life examples on the application of their model and explain the intuition of their methodology.

Although the math is a bit advanced, the authors explain step-by-step all the terminology, what makes the theory easily understandable. I have used it as a reference in a course of my M.Sc. in Operations Research and Decisions, but I believe undergraduates can understand it (not without sweating a few drops).

Personally, I believe that Keeney's book "Value Focused thinking" is more intuitive and day-to-day oriented, but the bulk of the theory is presented in this earlier book. So if you like math and economics, you should try this book first.

Methodology on preference retrieval implementation.......2000-03-17

This is a very good book grounded in solid microeconomic theory foundations. It starts with classical micro theory such as preferences and axioms, and it moves on to risky preferences and methods on how to retrieve them by constructing careful experiments. It also discusses the limitations on preference retrieval by such axiomatic methods due to the heuristics and biases that occur in decision making behaviour. However, this book is also useful for non-economists, as it describes decision making theories and applied methods on how to retrieve preferences in fields such as policy and medical sciences. The book's target market is mostly economics/ decision sciences graduate students or those who have achieved a comparable or higher level of their studies/work experience. It has also very instructive real world examples of PhD students running preference retrieval experiments and reporting their results. Good book for those keen on the subject. The 1976 version of the book has won a book prize, hence the assurance of quality. Furthermore, Raiffa is a well established Harvard academic, which further lends credence to the book.

A Breath of Fresh Air.......2003-09-06

I am an avid Romance novel reader and for RJ's first book she did a great job. She did such a good job with her characters that I felt they could be real people. In fact, it was a breath of fresh air that the characters didn't have intimate relations every time they got near each other. Refreshing.

Aaahhh, Romance!.......2003-09-06

I really enjoyed A Bet Worth Taking because it brings out the romance in me. R.J. McCall is very descriptive in her writing. I felt like I could picture every location and what all the characters looked like. She makes each person come alive. At times I felt like the Cindy character wanting to shake both Holt and Shelby! To me, that makes a good book - if you can relate to the people in the story. The dialogue is every day language - some of the things I know I have said before! Try the book - you'll be glad you did. I was hooked from the beginning.

The standard way of thinking about decisions is backwards, says Ralph Keeney: people focus first on identifying alternatives rather than on articulating values. A problem arises and people react, placing the emphasis on mechanics and fixed choices instead of on the objectives that give decisionmaking its meaning. In this book, Keeney shows how recognizing and articulating fundamental values can lead to the identification of decision opportunities and the creation of better alternatives. The intent is to be proactive and to select more attractive decisions to ponder before attempting any solutions.

Keeney describes specific procedures for articulating values by identifying and structuring objectives qualitatively, and he shows how to apply these procedures in various cases. He then explains how to quantify objectives using simple models of values. Such value analysis, Keeney demonstrates, can yield a full range of alternatives, thus converting decision problems into opportunities. This approach can be used to uncover hidden objectives, to direct the collection of information, to improve communication, to facilitate collective decisionmaking, and to guide strategic thinking. To illustrate these uses, Keeney shows how value-focused thinking works in many business contexts, such as designing an integrated circuit tester and managing a multibillion-dollar utility company; in government contexts, such as planning future NASA space missions and deciding how to transport nuclear waste to storage sites; and in personal contexts, such as choosing career moves and making wise health and safety decisions.

Enlightening and practical approach.......2006-11-08

I am finishing my Masters in Operations Research and Decisions, and I had several courses on Decision theory. This book taught me far more than most of the courses, and it surely helps me more than all together when it comes to real-life decision making.

I like Keeney's approach in that it is simple but strong. While he does give a strong mathematical foundation, he also explains the intuition behind his theory.

Every time someone asks about what I have learned in the MSc I like to give an example I thought about while reading his book (and using his approach). Let's suppose you are seating on the Sofa and you want to eat something, what do you do? 100% of my friends answered that they go to the kitchen and look for something eat. That's exactly what Keeney is against: to take decisions based on the alternatives (what he calls alternative focus thinking). What his approach would recommend in the described situation, is to stay on the Sofa and think hard about the food that you would mostly like to eat. Than, go to the kitchen and see if you have it. If you do, great! If not, does the pleasure of eating it pay for the pain of going out to buy it? The point is that usually you wouldn't ask yourself this question if you were already in front of the second-best option without knowing what you really want.

The book is well written and full of day-to-day and more complicated examples. All of them applied by the author in his own life or in huge corporations. Very good reading!

According to Dave Reiter: This book is a bit more complex than Smart Choices. It suggests that you always start with your values/preferences for any decision that you want to make. (I think this is often, but not always, a good idea. I think sometimes you're better off starting with the framing of the decision.) This is also a bit dry.

Great background for those who liked Smart Choices.......1999-03-15

A very helpful book. Parts of it contain more details than I wanted to know about specific detailed applications of the decision-making techniques to government and industry. However, I did enjoy the parts where Keeney describes how he uses the techniques in his personal life. Particularly amusing and informative are the parts where he talks about how he and his wife decided what to name their baby, and how he decided not to get tested for colon cancer and spent the time playing squash instead.
