      3 out of 5 stars Very limited.......2005-12-25

The good thing about this book is that it helps you to break the barrier between you and the things that you can do. This is the real point that I got out of this book. Otherwise, it is very limited in many ways. It is of much less value compared to "Self Publishing, Writing and Marketing Your Own Books and Booklets". The latter one gives you both the spirit and the knowledge required to get it done.

      5 out of 5 stars Practical.......2004-06-11

This book has shown me my correct publishing path. I am currently working on a history of corporate greed in America. Therefore, it's only fitting that I proceed independently rather than toiling away in service to the publishing elite. It's worth the 12.95 investment.

5 out of 5 stars Saved me money and time.......2004-02-09

I didn't know anything about how to get my manuscript into the marketplace. Dan's shown me how to do that independently without wasting a lot of my time and money! This update to his previous book couldn't come at a better time. I enjoyed it.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2004-02-09

This is a spirited and practical handbook for those of us who are looking to publish and market our books independently. It's written with good humor and in an easy-to-read style with real world recommendations that I found very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Beginner Bread Book.......2003-08-20

I learned to bake bread from this book, and that's saying something. I'd tried several other books and recipes that all assumed I knew things I didn't (like what a "sponge" is, or how to tell when the dough is done rising). I was beginning to think that baking yeast breads was just one of those talents some people were born with and I wasn't. My loaves usually resembled bricks.

And then I found Beth's Basic Bread Book. It told me everything I needed to know in intimate detail, included lots of gorgeous (and instructive) pictures and, well, I learned to bake bread. The good, crusty, fluffy, tasty, not-at-all-bricklike kind. If you're already an experienced baker of bread, you might still get some yummy recipes from this book, but you might just as well skip on to *The Bread Bible* by the same author.

      5 out of 5 stars A great technical manual.......1999-05-22

This is THE book to buy about bread baking if you want all the technical information you can imagine. No where else have I found the wealth of information that encourages good basic technique AND serious experimentation. Each step in the process is explained for purpose as well as procedure. The margin notes that give recipe "commitment" (time, steps, etc.) at a glance. Gives a great substitutions list. Shortage of recipes but that is not its purpose. An essential companion book to a bigger recipe book

4 out of 5 stars Too many words.......1998-05-03

Being a simple person, I found that this book provided more detail than I wanted. The recipes call for some ingredients that I didn't have on hand and I couldn't find in the super market e.g. semolina flour. I find the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book 1968 version, simpler and easier to follow (given to me by ex wife no 1 as she left me). For me, at this point in my bread making career (3 weeks), there are just too many words for me in Beth's book. I will keep this book on hand for possible changes in my bread making philosopy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginning bread bakers........1998-03-03

More than just recipes, Beth Hensperger provides much needed technique for the first-time bread baker. She describes herself as an angel sitting on the new baker's shoulder, and she is right. Even my first loaf of bread was perfect thanks to the details Ms. Hensperger shared in this book. I wish I could e-mail her personally!

          Book Description

What should you see when you’re analyzing real data using one of the major statistical packages, such as SPSS, SAS or Microsoft Excel? This book will show you, and will walk you through the output from a variety of statistical outcomes, such as data reflecting a single common factor. Through the use of actual demonstrations, the authors supply readers with the computer programs necessary to simulate data sets with the statistical properties (usually multivariate) that are often assumed of real data. The reader is then shown how to analyze these data sets and how to interpret the results. The book begins with a general introduction to doing research and tips for using the three statistical packages. The authors next explore how to create data structures and perform univariate, bivariate, and multivariate simulations. They then show how to use the simulations to understand common statistical algorithms and their outputs when doing a basic correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, multiple regression, discriminate analysis, classification analysis and MANOVA. Throughout the book, the authors provide the reader with helpful guides, such as: *Hint boxes to give readers tips for executing particular techniques using the statistical software packages. *Steps that show each stage of a procedure, such as importing an Excel file into SAS. *Problems end each chapter so the reader can practice the techniques described. *Web Site with the SAS and SPSS programs and sample data.

4 out of 5 stars This book combines two previous books in one (plus some).......2005-06-05

This book combines Neal French's "Potter's Directory of Shape and Form" along with Constant & Ogden's "Potter's Palette", along with some pages of additional decoration photos. By this I mean that the exact pages of those other books are what this book consists of. Thus, it is a better buy than either of those other books.

Both of them are useful resources. To get an idea of what this book contains, look at the reviews for those books. The result is a very handy & informative book, but I can imagine a book which is even more comprehensive, which is why I'm giving only 4 stars.

p.s. By the way, I spent a few moments paging through this book looking for any mention of Constant & Ogden, the authors of the Potter's Palette, but I couldn't find any (if it is there, it is obscure). How is it that they can publish this book under Neal French's name without any evident mention of the authors who produced half the book? I wonder what book the additional decoration pages came from?

This compelling, well-reported biography tells the story of Madeleine Albright, the first woman secretary of state--therefore the highest-ranking female official--in U.S. history. Its author, Michael Dobbs, was the Washington Post reporter who first uncovered Albright's Jewish heritage, which had been kept from her by her Czech immigrant parents, who fled to the U.S. when Madeleine was 11 years old. Her father, Joseph Korbel, was a diplomat serving in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, when World War II began. The Korbels managed to escape to England, but more than two dozen of her relatives (including three grandparents) died at the hands of the Nazis. Madeleine and her family were baptized as Catholics in England, and her parents never told her about her Jewish heritage or the circumstances of her grandparents' deaths.

Most of the book deals with Madeleine's life in the United States and the building of her career: member of the Wellesley College class of '59; marriage and then divorce from Joseph Medill Patterson Albright; her Ph.D. from Columbia, followed by jobs with Ed Muskie's senate office and Zbigniew Brzezinski at the National Security Council; the national campaigns of Geraldine Ferraro and Michael Dukakis; the 1993 appointment as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "Madeleine was attracted to power as a swan is attracted to water," writes Dobbs. Her house in Georgetown, only a few blocks from the residences of Katherine Graham and Pamela Harriman, became a foreign-policy salon.

Albright has more star power than any secretary of state since Henry Kissinger, and she can take credit for increasing public interest and awareness of foreign affairs. Her personality is a "contradictory mix of insecurity and assertiveness, vulnerability and determination, pleasantness and steeliness," Dobbs writes. "Madeleine's life may have been a 'fairy tale,' in her phrase, but it was a fairy tale of her own making." At the heart of his assessment of her life is the secret of her family's past and how it drove her need for success as well as her views on foreign policy. Albright herself admits the seminal event affecting all of her views about foreign policy was the West's initial appeasement of Hitler and his takeover of her native Prague. "I saw," she once said, "what happened when a dictator was allowed to take over a piece of a country and the country went down the tubes. And I saw the opposite during the war when America joined the fight." Such feelings are essential background in understanding Albright's role in shaping American policy toward foreign intervention, particulary in Eastern Europe. --Linda Killian

          Book Description

Since becoming secretary of state in 1997, Madeleine Albright has emerged as one of the most forceful voices in the Clinton administration and the chief architect of American foreign policy in the Balkans. As Michael Dobbs makes clear in this timely and important book, it's impossible to understand Albright without an appreciation of the tumultuous events that have shaped her life, and he traces Albright's progress from a European ghetto to the corridors of power in Washington. As the twentieth century comes to a close, the life of this remarkable woman provides much insight into past events and is an inspirational testimony to how willpower and persistence can triumph over every adversity.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable Woman, Remarkable Story.......2003-12-01

This is a beautifully written book on the life history of Mrs. Albright. I knew little about her prior to reading this, and the book filled in what I wished to know. I was aware that her father was a mentor to Condy Rice and actually am interested in knowing more about him, now.

Actually, I wasn't aware on buying the book that there was so much focus on her Jewish relatives, and found myself relatively uninterested in Mr. Dobbs's efforts to inform the Secretary. For every one of us interested in distant relatives of whom we know little, there is one of us who isn't.

This book was a pleasure to read even without the Secretary's co-operation. However, for those interested more in her political development than her personal history, a look at other books would be suggested.

5 out of 5 stars Highly informative and laced with history.......2002-04-14

Madeleine Albright: A Twentieth Century Odyssey was a joy to read. It was well-written, in precise, easyily read prose. The research job was obviously fantastic, as Dobbs uncovered facts that even Madeleine was at least at one time unaware of. This history of Madeleine Albright's life is detailed and amazing. She is truly a person to be admired. Her history is laced unremovably with the history of the countries she lived in. Her native Czeckoslovkia underwent Hitler, the rise and fall of Communism, and later the dis-integration of the country into the Czeck Republic and Slovakia. Her political views were shaped by Munich and the appeasement, by the consequences of inaction rather than by the consequences of action, such as the Vietnam War, the one event which primarily shaped the foriegn-policy views of her colleagues. Her father delivered her and her immediate family from Hitler, as they were Jewish. Much of the rest of her family perished in the death camps. The Albrights moved to the United States and converted to Catholicism as a protective measure. Madeleine was drived by an incredible urge to assimilate, to please, and to succeed. Sometimes, these instincts came into conflict with one another. Dr. Albright is an amazing woman. I have seen her speak at a college in my area about terrorism and about the effects of September 11, and the myth of a bipolar world. She talked about women's rights and about the Balkans War. She said that "a country that lives only for itself is like a person that lives only fo himself." This defines her foreign policy image. I highly recommend this book, both for its research and for its subject matter.

3 out of 5 stars Uneasy about the author, fascinated by the subject.......2001-07-01

This book is a model of biographic research. Dobbs tracks Albright's family 4 generations back across Europe and through WWII.

I greatly enjoyed learning more about Albright's personal rise to the top, which was inspirational to me as a woman.

But due to Albright's lack of cooperation with Dobbs in the project, it didn't have a lot of detail from her personally. It was almost all from friends, enemies? and others.

The facts around Dobbs writing this book bother me. It started with him digging up the fact that she was Jewish (Haven't we progressed beyond caring whether someone is Jewish?) After Dobbs discovered this fact and it broke in the news, he decided to write a book. He describes a tense meeting with Madeline in which she is not at all pleased with his intrusive findings.

This detail bothered me as I read the book. Is Doobs impartial? Was he possibly angry that she basically shunned his project? It undermined my faith in his opinions slightly.

If you want to learn more about Madeline and don't mind that the first part is pre WWII, you'll enjoy this book. But I think Dobbs could have gone about it in a better way. I would have enjoyed hearing what Madeline really had to say about everything.

4 out of 5 stars Madeleine Korbel Albright: The Odyssey.......2001-03-09

Madeleine is truly driven by the need to assimilate, succeed, and do something great with her life. Her life has not been ordinary. She was shaped by life altering experiences that many young Americans do not understand. In fact, some probably cannot even imagine the depth that Madeleine arose from. Her strength, vision, and tenacity have guided her to become one of the leading role models in our modern society. However, she's also become an icon to women who so desperately need female role models. She questioned whether she had the ability to succeed in a predominantly male world. Her doubts are echoed by women across the country. However, she also demonstrated that it was possible to achieve dreams despite overwhelming odds against success. The Odyssey is truly inspiring. The only reason I wouldn't rate this book as "5 stars" is because of the author's cold, calculated, intrusion into Madeleine's most private moments-such as finding out she was Jewish. Yes, Madeleine's past is what makes her story so remarkable. However, I found Dobbs to be only concerned with "breaking the story", and not necessarily caring how it hurt Madeleine and her family. He was looking for the scoop.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book.......2000-07-14

Dobbs has produced an amazing piece of research and journalism. Practically half the book is devoted to a meticulous charting of Madeleine's parents, the Korbels, and their narrow escape from the Holocaust and later the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia. Following them to America, Dobbs shows how Madeliene's drive and natural intelligence lead her to assimilate seamlessly into American culture and graduate from Wellesley College. I think the author also does an excellent job charting the conflicts for women of this period and demonstrates how Albright succeeds in constantly acquiring new skills and a network of influential friends and colleagues during a time when she could have been simply a "supportive housewife". His insider look at her political career in New York and Washington is fascinating and very informative.

Perhaps Dobbs deserves to be best congratulated on developing a three-dimensional picture of a complex woman - no saint but instead a powerful human figure in our time.

This is the third "Minnesota Memories" from Joan Graham. I've read them all! This one is as delightful as its predecessors.
Graham suggests that you get together with friends and read the stories aloud--they are sure to trigger associations and soon people will be telling their own stories. Joan Graham believes that everyone has stories just waiting to be told or written. This book attests to her belief--it is a wonderful collection of real stories from real people.

I really enjoyed this book - it evokes the bittersweet memories of growing up in the midwest - and not just in Minnesota. This is the real thing, not some tongue-in-cheek send up of "hot dish & ludefisk."

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for All Who Love Minnesotans.......2003-05-05

I married a St. Olaf graduate who still carries her Minnesota accent after 40 years. Until I read this volume and the other two books in the series, I never really understood those North Star inhabitants who are afraid to say anything for fear of "making waves," who adore Eddie Cochran's hit "Sittin' in the Balcony," who worship Owatonna's Sullivan designed bank as a shrine, and who worry about everything from weather to the success of this year's corn crop. These books should be required reading for those who know and love Minnesotans or just want to understand the people who make the state so special. The final entry, Governor Pawlenty's Inaugural Address, made me especially appreciate Minnesotans' contributions to our daily lives.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked on these Books!.......2003-05-02

These Minnesota Memories books just keep on getting better and better. I picked up this one last week after I heard the author talking about it on WCCO radio, and I couldn't put it down till I read the last page. Some of the stories are funny while others are poignant, historically rich or even sad, but they're all honest, true, and tremendously entertaining. These books should be designated as Minnesota's Good Will Ambassadors. If you are from Minnesota or if you know someone from that great state, you must read all three volumes. Minnesota Memories 3 is just as terrific as the first two.

              Book Description

EQ-5D from the EuroQol Group is a standardised, non-disease-specific instrument for describing and valuing health. It is in widespread use in many countries and has been applied in many different settings. EQ-5D is now an integral feature of many clinical trials and is increasingly used in population health surveys.

This book reports on the results of the European Union-funded EQ-net project which furthered the development of EQ-5D in the key areas of valuation, application and translation. The primary effort concentrated on harmonising and integrating the results of the various EuroQol valuation projects. Most importantly, the book includes a set of VAS-based preference weights for all the EQ-5D health states based on cross-European EQ-5D data.

This book provides the most comprehensive account to date of the EuroQol Group endeavour. It will appeal to clinicians, nurses, health services researchers, health economists, those responsible for audit and quality assurance, public health specialists and managers in health care institutions, and the pharmaceutical industry.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A308163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The methodology of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is compared to operations analysis standards. Of special concern is how Air Combat Command (ACC) uses QFD for the Modernization Planning Process (MPP). ACC digresses from the traditional use of QFD for incorporating quality into manufacturing processes to use it as a planning tool. ACC's goal in implementing QFD is to incorporate the demands of the Air Force mission into the modernization planning effort. ACC's use of QFD to identify and quantify current deficiencies and quantify the value of alternative future solutions has led to the investigation of inconsistencies with QFD, both generally and with how ACC employs it. In short, the purpose of this thesis is to improve ACC's current method for optimizing combat capability through both near-term and far-term modifications.

                    Book Description

"This book is not a 'one-minute' guide for managers in search of alleged quick-fixes of service quality. Instead, it is thirty years of accumulated theory and research that can help serious students understand and analyze this complex phenomenon. The book succeeds in embedding the often overlooked customer within organization studies, using the interdisciplinary approach that scholars preach but seldom practice, and closing with an agenda for future research that others might even find worth pursuing."

--Dr. David E. Bowen, Professor of Management and Dean of Faculty and
                    Programs, Thunderbird

"Schneider and White promise to deliver insight into the intriguing intricacies of providing excellent services. They deliver sagacity, the intelligent application of knowledge. They do this by being eclectic, disciplined, and thoughtful... Facts about service – what it is, how it happens, what is required to make it better – thankfully dominate this book, supported by good thinking and good methods. No one interested in service quality should miss this book. There is no other book like it."

--Rick Guzzo, Ph.D., Mercer Human Resource Consulting

"The coverage is excellent. Among other things, it does a nice job of providing a rationale for why researchers and managers need to understand the perspectives of their customers."

--Susan E. Jackson, Ph.D., Rutgers University

The last three decades have seen a dramatic increase in the attention businesses devote to their quality of service. Scholars and researchers in a number of disciplines, including marketing, human resources I/O psychology, sociology, and consumer behavior, have all made substantial contributions to understanding what service is, how service and service delivery quality are experienced by customers, and the role of employees and their organizations in service delivery. Service Quality: Research Perspectives presents a comprehensive overview and analysis of the field and its research, including its growth, emerging trends, and debates.

Authors Benjamin Schneider and Susan S. White cover the diverse conceptual and empirical approaches that characterize thinking and research on service quality, especially service delivery. It introduces the concept of service and the important ways service production can differ from goods production. It also presents a history of the concept of product quality and the emergence of concern for service quality.
