      Book Description

Regulatory Encounters reports on a path-breaking study of how government regulation of business in the United States differs in practice from regulation in other economically advanced democracies.
In each of ten in-depth case studies, the contributors to this volume compare a particular multinational corporation's experience with parallel regulatory regimes in the United States and in Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, The Netherlands, and the European Union, noting precisely which regulatory precautions were actually implemented in each country. The regulatory systems analyzed include aspects of environmental protection, product safety, debt collection, employees' rights, and patent protection. The studies in Regulatory Encounters indicate that the adversarial and legalistic character of American regulation imposes higher costs and delays on economic activity than comparable regulatory regimes in other economically advanced democracies, and often does not generate higher levels of protection for the public.

      Book Description

      Winning leaders do three things.
      1. They challenge the status quo.
      2. They build confidence in others.
      3. They coach people on what to do and how to do it.

Be the Leader, Make the Difference explains how you can perform each of the three leadership roles. It also points out the three C's (challenge, confidence, coaching) are interrelated. The material speaks directly to the problems faced by many managers. Throughout the book, concrete examples are used that challenge readers to move out of their "comfort zones", to feel motivated and to understand the importance of modeling success. The book doesn't simply identify areas where improvement is needed; it provides realistic examples of how to get there.

      3 out of 5 stars Triangles Galore.......2005-04-21

Leadership by Paul Thornton is a book full of triangles. The author describes just about every topic he covers in terms of three key components, which he then presents as sides of a triangle.

One key topic in the book involves possibilities. The three sides of that triangle are seeing, describing and pursuing.

There is a chapter called The Three C's of Leadership. That triangle has sides named challenge, confidence, and coaching.

After a while you go a little triangle crazy. But that's not the only problem with this book. Consider the chapter about self-fulfilling prophecy. The triangle for that chapter is assumptions, expectations, and reactions.

The triangle here is less than helpful. The muddled writing makes things even worse. Thornton is talking about what everyone else calls the Pygmalion Effect but he uses very different language so you have to work harder than you might otherwise.

There are similar problems throughout the book. The organization is not tight. The metaphors are not consistent. The writing is not clear, and some things seem like they are thrown in just to fill up enough pages to get above a hundred.

"But, is it worth reading?" I hear you cry. The answer to that one is an emphatic "it depends."

This book is a collection of thoughts about leadership by an experienced manager. Many of those thoughts are insightful and they can be helpful. How much value you get from this book will depend a lot on your own experience level.

If you are a relatively experienced manager yourself, you will probably find a thing or two in here that you can carry away. What you get will be worth the price of the book.

If you have access to the author, in one of his classes, on a tele-seminar or at a speech where you can ask questions, this book will probably be helpful. In those situations you can ask questions to clarify things or hear the nuance of oral presentation.

But if you are a new manager, out there by yourself, beware of this book. There are good things here, but the organization and the writing style can make them very hard to tease out. It's very easy to see only part and not the whole of what Thornton is trying to convey.

This is also one of those "leader as hero" books. You are treated to statements like this. "Leaders help individuals, teams, and organizations become more and achieve more than they ever thought possible. Why do they do it? They have a burning desire to make a difference."

Or this. "Leaders have desire, passion, and energy for their vision. They are excited about the possibilities they see for people, teams, and organizations they are leading. Leaders know their actions will make a difference."

Evidently lust for power and position and naked ambition don't show up among the leaders in Mr. Thornton's world. That makes his world different from the one that I inhabit, where those things are a regular part of the landscape and altruistic motives often remain well hidden.

There's one more problem area if you're a new manager. There is lots of advice about what to do, but not much guidance about how to do it. If you want to learn the basics, go to other books like Kouzes and Posner's The Leadership Challenge.

If you have been around the leadership game for a while, this book will give you the insights and opinions of another experienced manager. You'll see things differently; understand the way another manager understands them. That may be worth the price of the book. But if you're new to the management/leadership game, pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Impactful and Easy to follow.......2003-02-10

This book provides a simple and easy-to-follow guide to leadership. Thornton postulates that the three basic elements of leadership are to challenge the status quo, build confidence in others, and coach poeple. This 3-C's framework is fleshed-out in a very easy to follow book. I used some of the concepts from the book even before I finished it. As an organizational development professional, I am going to recommend this book to people who want quick but impactful advice. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars "Off the Wall" Answers to be a Better Leader (:>.......2002-02-06

Paul B. Thornton takes real-life examples and "answers off the office walls" (i.e., business and inspirational sayings found on many of characters walls, used in his book to highlight "how to be a leader") to tell us how we can all become better leaders. Although I have not had the experience of having Mr. Thornton give a seminar or training on leadership, I can gather that many of the book's chapters and examples would indeed fit well into that forum.

When viewed in those terms, to perhaps compare Thornton's "Be the Leader: Make the Difference" to Tom Peters' "Seminar" may not be too much of a stretch. To explain, both authors use example and analogy to highlight and emphasize their core principles and do so in a manner that gives one the "feel" of an actual training (or seminar, respectively). In the case of Thornton, he focuses on three things that Leaders do:
      * Challenge the Status Quo
      * Build Confidence in Others
      * Coach People on What to Do and How to Do It

One interesting aspect of the 3 C's is that in Mr.Thornton's words, "Everyone has untapped leadership abilities that can be developed and utilized" and the catalyst to develop this leadership is the desire to "make a difference". Thus, by using the 3 C's we all can become better leaders, managers, supervisors, coaches and people.

Overall, Paul Thornton really has great experience to share and ideas to express and in his book he undoubtedly combines the best aspects of his previous two books - Lessons from the Best Managers and The Answers are on the Office Wall into a portable and pertinent book on the topic of leadership. Paul Thornton draws on his 25 years of experience training supervisors and managers at United Technologies Corporation, as well as his consulting and training experience at "Be the Leader Associates" a firm he founded to support companies in selecting and developing leaders whom they need to compete with the best....

5 out of 5 stars Be the Leader; Make the Difference.......2001-06-21

As a new entrepreneur I found this book invaluable. Just understanding my own Leadership style has been an immense asset to my company. A definite 'must read' for all the managers in your company.. They also have an extremely helpful website, www.betheleader.com , with many of the articles written by Mr. Thornton that helps to bring the subject matter into perspective.. a wonderful book.. 4 out of 5 stars Great overview of the work of a leader.......2000-06-27

Business consultant Paul B. Thornton has written an informative and practical book that guides and directs those of us who accept the opportunity to lead. Be the Leader, Make the Difference answers the question, "What does a leaders do?"

Be the Leader, Make the Difference is an excellent overview of both what successful leaders do and how you can develop and implement these practices into your own leadership.

Author Paul B. Thornton identifies three key responsibilities that every leader must master: challenge, confidence, and coaching. According to Thornton, "...leaders do three things: they challenge the status quo; build the confidence in others; and coach associates on what to do and how to do it."

Using these three leadership responsibilities, Thornton has developed the 3-C Leadership model which is basis for Be the Leader, Make the Difference. The 3-C Leadership model is easy to understand and even easier to implement. In addition to the excellent 3-C Leadership model, it is filled with the experience and ideas of many successful leaders. I found this book to be very practical. There are many ideas included in this book that you can immediately put into your own leadership practice. One criticism that I would raise is that some sections of the book can, at times, lose focus in the midst of the content.

Overall, Be the Leader, Make the Difference is an excellent book for those who are looking to either improve their leadership skills or better understand what a leader does. Be the Leader, Make the Difference reads quickly and includes many real life examples of the 3-C Leadership model in practice along with case studies to assist in applying these principles in a business setting. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve his or her leadership skills or who wants a better understanding of the key responsibilities of a leader.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Introduction--I Read It in (almost) One Sitting!.......2001-06-11

I've spent more money than I care to think about in the last few weeks on "intro to wine" books, and I thought this one was terrific. Reasonable size, sensible and humorous asides, helpful photographs, wide variety of topics (including fascinating information on starting your own cellar, glassware, food pairings, the "business" of wine, etc.), It arrived about ten minutes before I left the house for a three-hour flight to Phoenix, and I devoured it on the plane. You know how you go racing through something wonderful and informative to see what's next, and then go back and study it more carefully? (At least, I do.) This is the one I'm going back to with my notebook. Try it, you'll like it!

      4 out of 5 stars Neophyte enjoyed.......2000-08-29

As someone who recently graduated from the "cheapest on sale at the grocery" style of wine buying, I found this intro of real value. The overviews of regions, varietals, and other, more subtle nuances gave me a straightforward method of choosing wine whether in the grocery, a wine shop or a restaurant. I've enjoyed my choices more and paid less since reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Kept In My Kitchen.......2000-08-25

Essentials of Wine was a pleasure to read and is now kept in my kitchen for quick reference. This book refreshed my memory on information acquired from several wine tasting events and dining experiences. I was not interested in purchasing and wading through a tome. This book sparked my interest to try other wines and not rely on some of my old favorites. My dinner guests are enjoying the benefits of my explorations. Thanks Mr. Steiman!

      5 out of 5 stars Refreshingly written.......2000-08-18

It was a pleasure to read the book ESSENTIALS OF WINE by Harvey Steiman. I think that it is a must read for those beginning in the complex world of wine. It should also be enjoyable and refreshing reading for those who are already knowledgeable to whatever degree. It was to me. Bob Miller

For the novice, this book aggregates a lot of basic information. However, this is also the problem as the flow seems to be all over. The reader is left with just "teasers" without the substantive information that will form the foundation to becoming an educated wine connesieur. Save your money; there are better foundational novels on this topic.

5 out of 5 stars Will change how you think about world affairs........2002-08-05

Professor Thornton leads us through the labyrinth of foreign policy decision making during the Nixon Administration and the subsequent Kissinger "Shogunate." The reader must be prepared to think *strategically*, i.e. to consider apparently isolated events in a larger, global context. In other words, Thornton challenges us to think about world affairs just like the actual players did (and do).

Caveat: this is not a right-wing conspiracy-type book. It is a serious text on recent American and world history. People looking for a sensational ride through the subterranean passages of governmental power would probably be better off elsewhere.

Thornton does suggest explanatory models that are quasi-revolutionary, e.g. that Nixon's fall was the result of a commonplace political entrapment scheme by Kissinger, which led directly to (among other events) the fall of South Vietnam. Does that morsel sound tempting to you? The book is full of them. (I especially love Dr. Thornton's description of Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy - look up Liddy's name in the index to find the passage.)

Dr. Thornton is a Professor at George Washington University's School of International Affairs. He is an expert on China and its history (and he speaks several Chinese dialects). He is the "real McCoy" with a pedigree that includes a career in U.S. Air Force intelligence.

                  Book Description

Tourism Impacts, Planning and Management is a unique text, which links these three key areas of tourism: impacts, planning and management.

Tourism impacts are multi-faceted and therefore are difficult to plan for and manage. This book looks at all the key players involved - be they tourists, host communities or industry members - and considers a number of approaches and techniques for managing tourism successfully.

Divided into four parts, this text discusses:
                  * The growth, development and impacts of tourism
                  * Tourism planning and management: concepts, issues and key players
                  * Tools and techniques in tourism planning and management: education, regulation and information technology
                  * The future of tourism planning and management: issues of sustainability and the future

Up-to-date, international case studies are used, for example the impacts of 9/11 and terrorism in Bali, to illustrate and provide a real-life context for the theories discussed. Exercises are also included to consolidate learning.

                  * Links impacts, planning and management in tourism
                  * Global coverage and perspective with cases and examples from the UK, Australia and USA
                  * Takes an applied approach, using international case studies to explain and illustrate the theories discussed

                    Description:
Forced population displacement is a process that often accompanies contemporary tourism development. When widespread economic benefits are expected, relocation of existing communities may occur in the expected interests of the majority. This paper assesses the social impacts of a tourism-caused displacement case at a destination where tourism is being promoted as a regional development strategy and planned in a top-down fashion. Deficiencies in implementation and compensation resulting from the administrative arrangements are pointed out and planning-oriented recommendations are offered to help to mitigate the pain of indigenous populations in future tourism development and related dislocation projects.

                                    Book Description

With the globalization of the world's economies, the elimination of barriers to mobility within trade blocks, and the growth of consolidated multinational businesses, the movement of employees and independent contractors is an obvious feature of modern commercial life. While labour mobility may not yet be as free as capital mobility, the ground is closing. A logical response to the increased mobility of labour would be a gradual convergence of different countries' tax rules applying to expatriates, as nations seek to grapple with the same problem, and a growing harmonization of rules to prevent overlaps and double taxation while closing the lacunae which allow taxpayers to escape taxation completely. As the papers in this volume show, however, the legislatures responsible for drafting tax laws and the tax authorities responsible for administering them are many steps behind commercial developments. Indeed, if anything, the gap is widening. As the papers in this volume examine every aspect of the topic, different, sometimes dramatically different, approaches between jurisdictions are revealed. It is, therefore, to be hoped that governments turn their attention to the problems raised in this volume and explore appropriate paths for unilateral or multilateral resolution of these issues.
