Book Description
China's development from a traditional society to a technologically advanced, completely modern republic has been extraordinarily rapid. Due to developments since the mid-1980s, Chinese daily life for many has jumped directly from that constrained by an agricultural economy to that liberated by the information age. In "Perspectives on Communication in the People's Republic of China," James Schnell chronicles these changes and their impact on mass communication. He looks closely at Chinese newspaper reports and television programs and listens to government officials and people in the street, providing readers with an insider's view of the current state of communication in China, from the political to the personal. Grouped under the major categories of politics, education, and health are observations gleaned from Schnell's nine visits to China as a visiting scholar and military attaché. Ethnographic case studies are supported by examples from the media and supplemented with extensive references. Schnell concludes his fascinating look at contemporary China with an examination of cross-cultural communication on the most sophisticated level: that between President Clinton and Chinese officials during Clinton's 1998 visit to China. This book is must reading for students of Asian studies with an interest in communications and is ideal supplementary reading for courses in both communications and Asian studies.

Bisk = Big Time.......2004-03-13
Let me tell you a story, bub. It's a story about broken hearts and unkept promises. It's about nights in seedy hotels and days spent in the 12 Mile Tavern with nothing but a smudged glass and 50 cents to whittle the day away. That's what this book is, baby. The hard life. None of that fancy, high-falootin Manhattan spunk here. It don't fly with me and it don't fly with Nathan M. Bisk, I'll tell ya that right now.

Healthy user-friendly recipes.......2006-11-04
After reading this book at the library, I purchased it for a son because of the excellent coding of each recipe according to which health issue it addressed. He, in turn, using the book's recipes, prepared a delicious six dish meal for family and friends. Recipes don't call for extensive lists of ingredients, and if not already on your shelf, they are readily available at the store.
Exotic ingredients.......2006-03-24
This book is not what I expected it to be. Personally I think the ingredients are scarey. I do not expect to use it. It was a waste of money.
unleashing the power of food.......2006-02-01
love the book, healing the body has a lot to do with food.
the body will heal it's self but you have to feed it right.

Don't wast your money.......2004-04-21
This guy calls himself a Healing Master. On the book it says that he has "agreed to reveal all his most celebrated food cures". What a sham. The recipes in this book are NOT for your health! Too many recipes list the ingredients of sugar and other ingredients which should not be used if your planning to become or stay healthy. Buying this book may satisfy your curiosity, but will be a waste of your money otherwise.
Dear Master Hou.......2002-01-31
"I want to let you know what a difference your food has made in my life. Having numerous medical problems including cardiovascular disease with markedly elevated cholesterol and triglycerides.
Eating your prescribed diet and food has done a great deal to normalize my blood studies and the best part of all is that it is absolutely delicious."

Book Description
The book provides deep insights into the signal extraction problem - especially at the boundary of a sample, where asymmetric filters must be used - and how to solve it optimally. The traditional model-based approach (TRAMO/SEATS or X-12-ARIMA) is an inefficient estimation method because it relies on one-step ahead forecasting performances (of a model) whereas the signal extraction problem implicitly requires good multi-step ahead forecasts also. Unit roots are important properties of the input signal because they generate a set of constraints for the best extraction filter. Since traditional tests essentially rely on one-step ahead forecasting performances, new tests are presented here which implicitly account for multi-step ahead forecasting performances too. The gain in efficiency obtained by the new estimation method is analyzed in great detail, using simulated data as well as 'real world' time series.

Customer Reviews:
great book for beginners.......2007-08-10
Great book for beginners who want to start crocheting. I am a beginner and only knew one patter when I started this. This book is great. It tells you everything you need to know about crocheting such as tools, types of yarn and patterns. There are pictures in it that shows you step to step moves. It doesnt reall have good projects though. I am a young lady in my 20s and I am not interested in making anymore scarfs or blankets. I know how to make those already. I use this book for the patterns and it is a good book to look back if I forget how to do a certain stitch
Good for beginners!.......2006-03-18
This book was fantastic in helping me learn to crochet. I admit, I had some trouble getting past the foundation chain (like swimmergirl said), but after reading the directions a few times, I understood what they were saying. It's also very helpful because it throws in different terminology (letting you know some people all a triple crochet a treble crochet). The author only uses "stitch" and "chain" interchangeably when talking about the foundation chain, where a chain is a stitch. Now when I go to look at other crochet patterns, there's no confusion in reading the pattern and I'm able to do any pattern with ease. Four stars for the unclear beginning...but once you get started, this book helps you to get as far as you'd like to go!
Not very clear for the true novice.......2005-12-06
I have spent several hours trying to figure out what to do after I create the first basic "foundation chain," and this book is not very helpful for that. I found several explanations online that made more sense and went into more detail. The notation and terminology in this book is unclear for someone who has never crocheted before...the author uses "stitch" and "chain" interchangeably, for example.
I think you could find better free guides online if you are a true novice. This book does has some nice patterns and examples, but you won't be able to get that far if you can't understand the very basic techniques.
Just started today..........2005-07-23
I bought this book earlier today, and in the span of about 2-3 hrs I have learned 4 basic types of crochet stitch without breaking a sweat. I needed something very very basic, with lots of pictures, and as much elaboration as possible. This book pretty much fit the bill. And what is awesome is there is still so much to this book!! Once again I have not attempted any of the projects yet, but am just soo glad to have begun "getting hooked on crochet". If you have never picked up a crochet needle and want a book that dosen't leave explaning beginning stiches by the way side then this book is for you :)
Comprehensive and Interesting.......2005-01-15
This book is a great book for someone who knows basic crochet but would like to develop their skills further. The success of the book is the result of excellent photographs and a logical progression of more difficult and involved stitchery. The basics are given at the beginning of the book. Each subsequent chapter introduces a more involved crochet skill and then a project to practice your newly acquired skill. All the projects in the book are contemporary and beautiful crochet pieces. A truly outstanding crochet book.

Book Description
Stuart Symington is the first full-length biography of one of Missouri's most influential and effective twentieth-century political leaders. It tells the story of a remarkable man whose adult life was spent at or near the center of power in America, a man who was talented and ambitious, yet maintained a realistic touch that enabled him to connect with ordinary people.
"Talented and ambitious, Stuart Symington parlayed his personal charm, social and political connections, and excellent organizational skills to claim a succession of important posts in business, government and politics. His story is as fascinating as it is complicated, and James C. Olson tackles the Herculean task of sorting it all out. This well-crafted book provides the first comprehensive portrait of Symington and his multifaceted career. The writing is clear and to the point. The research is impressive. Olson's access to personal papers still in the hands of the family afforded him valuable insights about Symington and his actions. Stuart Symington: A Life is a fascinating read."-William E. Foley
Customer Reviews:
A Quality Biography of one of Missouri's Favorite Sons, and a Critical Player in the Advance of the United States Air Force.......2006-01-23
This is the first full-length biography of Stuart Symington (1901-1988), Democrat from Missouri and one of the most significant political leaders of the middle part of the twentieth century. It is much anticipated, for the author has been at work on it for many years, but it is worth the wait. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, Symington was educated at Yale University. In the 1920s and 1930s he worked as an executive for several radio and steel companies. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1938 and became president of the Emerson Electric Manufacturing Co.
This was prelude to a career after 1945 in politics. Symington began working with the war demobilization effort at the conclusion of World War II, and in 1946-1947 was Assistant Secretary of War for Air. When the Department of Defense was established in 1947, he became the first Secretary of the Air Force, 1947-1950. In that context he established the newly independent Department of the Air Force as a co-equal with the Army and Navy and led the defense establishment into the cold war era. He served in several other public positions until resigning in 1952 to run for the Senate from Missouri. He served four terms as Missouri's senator, choosing to retire in 1976. Throughout his senatorial career Symington was a knowledgeable leader in international and defense affairs, as well as an able counselor to several Democratic presidents. He also ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party nomination for the Presidency in 1960.
James Olson's biography covers fully the broad career of Stuart Symington and ably pinpoints his skill as both a politician and an administrator. It is a valuable starting point for any study of his life and career. It should probably be read in conjunction with "Cold War Strategist: Stuart Symington and the Search for National Security" (Praeger, 2001), by Linda McFarland and George M Watson's "The Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, 1947-1965" (Office of Air Force History, 1993), both of which offer detailed assessments of Symington's role in the development of air power.
A Life Retold.......2004-01-03
This superb book tells the story of an amazing man. His interesting life coupled with the author's determination to reveal his true story create a captivating read. I truly recommend this book; by reading it you will learn more about an important man in America's history; Stuart Symington.

First-time author Norton strikes a fine balance between memoir and nature essay in writing of her homecoming to the wellspring of her childhood memories, the Cedar River of Nebraska. She had come home to nurse the grief of having been raped and of trying to drown the memory of that horrible event in alcohol. "For long years I felt afloat without mooring, without anchor," she writes, until she finally returned to that lean and austere place of childhood pleasures. Her account of finding a psychic center among family and friends is affecting without being sentimental, and Norton writes warmly of the plants and animals that inhabit this place--cranes, curlews, sand roses, and other denizens of the High Plains--and of the people who work the land.
Customer Reviews:
Paradise lost . . ........2005-07-02
Part memoir, part travelogue, Norton's book centers around her family's cabin on a small lake on the edge of the Nebraska Sandhills. The story is told in three parts: her childhood at the lake in the 1950s and 60s, a sojourn there in 1984 where she sets out to write a thesis and settles instead into a job at a small-town bar and becomes romantically involved with a man she meets there, and a return visit several years later as she crisscrosses the Sandhills gathering material for a book.
Read uncritically, the book is a rhapsody of appreciation for the beauty of the Sandhills and a story of recovery, from a violent sexual assault far from home and a subsequent period of hard drinking and restless wandering. It speaks of the healing powers of nature and of the search for a lost self through memories of childhood innocence.
Read more critically, the book often doesn't quite follow through with some of the themes it puts forward. I wanted to know more about her relationship with her mother after her parents' divorce, an event that shattered Norris' world. While her accounts of the men she came to know there as an adult (most of them cowboys who are predatory in their attraction to her) are vivid and unsettling, I would like to have learned more about how she came to feel safe with a man again and to love.
Her roaming around Nebraska in the last part of the book tends to be a catalogue of places seen without getting much beneath the surface of them. There's a little history, some talk of the impact of corn and cattle on the environment, and many references to the depletion of the great underground reservoir, the Ogallala Aquifer. But balanced against these larger issues, a reader may want for accounts of experiences that pierce through the abstractions to the living human drama they embrace.
I recommend this book for readers who like stories of personal journeys and recovery, especially as lived in remote and isolated places. Also recommended: Teresa Jordan's "Riding the White Horse Home," Mary Clearman Blew's "All But the Waltz," and Judy Blunt's "Breaking Clean."
A collection of banalities.......2004-09-22
Norton's assertions about her own history, soul, and mental states might as well have been taken out of a feminist literary criticism textbook - they are absolutely predictable and femisitically-correct, and thus come off as rehearsed conformities rather than genuine discoveries of self. This affection to stereotype marks every single page of the book, every chapter - Norton doesn't care to see beyond Stetson hats, cowboys and bars, really. The Notebook chapters are a series of well-crafted nature observation, but they only intersperse the main narrative, and the short relief they provide is not enough to dispell the numbing effect of the general tone of the book.
It was if I was there - every chapter!.......2001-11-10
Anyone who grew up in Nebraska, either in the Sandhills or anywhere along the Platte River would identify with this book. She is a wonderful descriptive writer and takes you to the place she wants you to see. It also brings to mind long ago memories of times you may have experienced by the similarities associated with her writings. A friend gave me this book and as they say, "The best friend is one who gives you a new book as a gift". She was, of course, right. I loved it.
powerful...about the healing power of place.......1999-05-13
This book was so much more than I had anticipated. I initially bought the book because it's about an area of the country that I know well. I found it to be a moving narrative about recovery and growth. It's about coming back from the edge. The author does a masterful job of explaining the healing power of home. I look forward to what she writes of next. This is a book by a woman that will be very readable by women, but not limited to women. Highly recommended.
Book Description
From the Enron scandal to the Ebola virus scare, from oil spills to acts of terrorism, crises scar our age. And whether it's an expensive product recall or a deadly airplane crash, any crisis can turn into chaos-unless there's an effective management response plan in place.
All Crises Are Global provides the basics of an effective crisis-management plan. Marion Pinsdorf gives managers the tools and sensitivity to deal with the catastrophic effects of a crisis-whether it touches on the organization itself, the media, competitors, partners, government, or victims. Filled with real-world examples of successes and failures (from the Arthur Andersen meltdown to the attacks of September 11), Pinsdorf shows how to plan for, manage, monitor, and mitigate the effects of crises large and small.
Spread instantaneously to a litigious world by global media, crises can no longer be contained or controlled-only anticipated and managed. Executives can manage the impact of even large-scale events by quickly taking responsibility for the human and financial costs of an organization's mistakes.
Pinsdorf provides techniques for building smart organizations that react quickly before problems escalate into crises. Practical, tested, and wise, this book helps all managers look for trouble spots and deal with them effectively.
"Marion Pinsdorf . . . is able to counsel today's harried business leaders from perspectives no one else can offer. By combining what we can learn from the past with modern techniques and creative problem solving strategies, Dr. Pinsdorf shows how we can find new positive ways to take some of the 'hiss' out of the word crisis."-John W. Felton, President and CEO, Institute for Public Relations
