Beautiful and Heartwarming.......2000-05-14

A $4.00 closeout at the local chain; worth every penny of its original price! The photography and insights into the various regions are virtual tours by armchair of our states. Why this book isn't currently published is a mystery; a paperback version just doesn't seem appropriate to reflect the beauty of the photos. The recipes appear authentic and are well presented for easy use by the reader. My compliments to Idone; don't give up, keep writing... one of our favorite american cuisine books.

I have been associated with using this book in a class room setting. The level of statistics is Ph.D and overall the class thought the book was written at a depth that was appropriate, but was written in such a way that it was not only hard to read but did not explain itself in a logical means. The instructor often had to apologize for the short comings found in the book.

Poignant, Interesting, and Funny.......2004-06-10

I'm a huge admirer of Jean Carnahan. What a woman! She stepped out of the "shadows" into the light at the worst time of her life and we are all the richer for it. She states immediately that this book isn't a sad one. No, it isn't, but that doesn't mean that I didn't shed a few tears while reading it. She has a wonderful gift for storytelling and I found myself laughing out loud many, many times. Most of all, I'm uplifted by her strength and courage. Her life is proof that, no matter your age, life can begin again after devastating tragedies and triumph. You go, girl! I highly recommend this book.

It ain't flat on the Great Plains!.......2003-01-08

I enjoyed this book, sent to me by a high school friend, as I went to the same consolidated high school in Lamar, Colo. as the author (but 2 years ahead of him)and recognized many of the features of that time and place which he describes so well. I was a town kid instead of a country kid but it helps understand better the kids I went to school with. Gary is a great story teller. I hope he didn't stretch it too much in a few places (I don't remember rattle snakes when my friend and I were hiking outside of town--but maybe it was winter). And no, the Great Plains are NOT flat but rolling praire with great views to the horizon sometimes. It's BIG SKY country and I miss though it has been years since I've been there. Thanks, Gary.

Up close and personal.......2002-04-07

Mr. Penley gives personal details that review his life on the prarie such that reading this book made me feel I knew him. He included facts and opinions about the history of the area that will help document for years to come what took place in that area. His ability to show emotions with words and his willingness to be vulnerable with the details made this a very interesting book. I read his other book too, and highly recommend it as well.

Rivers of Wind, a great read.......2002-04-07

I am an avid reader and this book, Rivers of Wind, was absolutely great. An easy and smooth book to read and every page was enjoyable. The author painted vivid pictures and I could see it like a movie. One of those books that you really hate it when you finish. I could have read it for a month. Thanks, Gary, whoever you are.
