An excellent differentiation of manages, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Leadership qualities are revealed through examination of some of the world's most recognized leaders. John Viney includes a great deal of valuable information without much fluff. "Drive" is not a lesson on motivation, yet you are certain to discover something applicable to yourself.

For the quilter wondering how to set your stack of blocks, here is the answer in 80 different ways. Ms Hanson covers side by side settings, simple sashing, sashing and setting and many more. She also suggests which block patterns are best for each type of setting. And best of all is her Special Considerations chapter where you learn how to deal with blocks that aren't quite the same size and how to set an unusal number of blocks. "Exodus" shines with a passion.......2000-05-06

World War II has always been a comforting war for Americans to reflect upon. After all, the United States stood proudly, along with Britain and the other Allies, against the menace of the Axis Powers. We fought the good fight, and won.

But a story that we hear less often is how American bombers were never sent to bomb the Zyklon-B gas tanks and railway shipping stations that kept the death camps running.

We also rarely hear about British warships ramming hulking old freighters crammed with Jewish refugees trying to emmigrate to Palestine, or America's unwillingness to let more than a few Jews (primarily scientists and well-connected members of the intelligentsia) come to America at a time of dark and terrible peril for the Jewish people of Europe.

Another rarely-told tale is the struggle to establish the State of Israel, a battle the Palmach and Haganah fought in equal parts against hostile Arabs and a British Mandate determined to prevent further Jewish settlement.

"Commander of the Exodus," a history book enhanced by the literary gifts of a novelist, tells this handful of rarely-heard tales by exploring the life of Yossi Harel, a young native of Palestine who brought over 20,000 displaced Holocaust survivors to what would soon become Israel, braving rough seas, mines and a vicious British blockade.

Harel, who is molded by Kaniuk into the deeply passionate and level-headed hero of "Commander of the Exodus," is clearly a man of substance. The staggering dangers involved in smuggling thousands of refugees across a hostile Mediterranean are explored thoroughly by the author, who paints a grim picture of the ships that failed to make it, and the refugees who died while trying to find a better life in the desert that would become Israel.

Unfortunately, Kaniuk's passionate narrative doesn't make much of an attempt to approach Palestine from an Arab, or even British, perspective. While Kaniuk's exodus narrative is stirring and sometimes devastating in its anger against a "civilized world" that helped to finish a dirty job begun by the Nazis, it's clearly a work of passion. This makes it less reliable as a history, but considerably more human and engaging.

This aside, it's clear that the author has wrought a rich historical perspective, charged with fact and drama. "Commander of the Exodus" dazzles with the sadness of history and the strength of human life.

This is like a another version of He Is Just Not That Into You...but the girls' version...a good book to put past relationships into perspective and even the relationship you are currently in! Must read to stop making the same mistakes and losing years on life with the WRONG person!

I read the book by the other author first "He's just not that into you", and wanted more of the same thing so I bought this book. Not even close. I still have my bookmark between pages 20 and 21 and I bought the book 5 months ago. Not a great read by any means.

Sure this book set me into tears quite a few times but that is because I swear it was written about me! Finally someone, a man at that, who totally understands and can explain how women and men feel about sex and relationships. It's brutally honest but you will feel better about yourself and the choices you've made by the end of the book. The "other" book shoots down your self confidence and this one boosts it. A wonderful must read for single girls.

Funny, but has an unclear theme.......2006-07-24

Kerner's book has a lot going for it - it's funny, it provides a man's point of view, and has some good information about sex and male/female differences. As you read the book, you grow to like Kerner a little. And the professed theme of the book, which advises women to stop settling and to wait for the real thing, is a REALLY important message that more women's books need to focus on.

On the downside, I had a hard time getting clear on what exactly Kerner's point was. He seemed to tell women to not settle, but then talked quite a bit about sex (he's a sex therapist) and provided a chapter written by his wife about meeting him. The book seemed to give you an overview and make you laugh, rather than really dive into the more meaty topic of raising your standards.

Overall, a decent book and worth a read. But not a classic.

It is undeniable the contribution Mr. Andersen made to the modern development of Minnesota, both as a business person and a public servant. This book is inspirational on a local level, and demonstrates how one person, with the right attitude, can accomplish so much in a lifetime.

If nothing else, read this for an inside glimpse of Minnesota's history and the development of our state as it exists today.

Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-03-02

This is an extraordinary, in the sense of out-of-the-ordinary, book. Flipping through it, you see page after page of loops and curves. At first, you might think it is a guide to drawing. And in a sense, it is. Most of the book explains how to use depictions of various types of loops to represent different kinds of business problems. Such problems never occur in isolation, because every business is a system, and everything that happens in a business has causes and effects that reach into other areas of the business and into the outside world. Author Dennis Sherwood is not peddling a simple notion, but rather is explaining "systems thinking," a method of analyzing systems and processes. We unexpectedly found this quite entertaining, written with a light touch and bound to give almost any manager some new, valuable insights. On the down side, the author probably could have delivered his core message more succinctly, and after a while his insistence on demonstrating and categorizing the species and genera of loops begins to seem, well, a bit loopy.

This book is written by a lawyer and an economist, but looks also towards business, political science, sociology, social administration, anthropology, and other disciplines. The fundamental strategies, institutions, and explanations of regulation are reviewed and the means of identifying `good' regulation are outlined. Individual chapters look at such topics as self-regulation, the regulation of risks, the cost-benefit testing of regulation, the importance of enforcement, and the challenge of regulating within Europe. The book's second part considers a series of issues of particular concern in modern utilities regulation, including the use of RPI-X price caps, the control of service quality, franchising techniques and ways of measuring regulatory performance. Questions of accountability and procedure are then examined and recent public debates on regulatory reform are reviewed. A central argument of Understanding Regulation is that regulation inevitably gives rise to political contention but that persons of different political persuasion can nevertheless converse sensibly on the search for better regulation.

This is really a book for specialists or those who have a particular interest in anti-trust consent decrees. The average person, not understanding the fine points or goals or methods or limits of the law will find themselves getting quite frustrated with some of the points Epstein is making. He has taken a look at several aspects of our law rather than pronouncing and the morality or the rightness or wrongness of the companies entering into these decrees.

Epstein lays out the legal theories around consent decrees and how they arose from our quite fuzzy anti-trust laws. And it is hard for the anti-trust laws to not be cloudy because as soon as they are specifically defined, companies will find a way around those rules to accomplish a very similar end (rent seeking behavior through market dominance) just outside the grasp of the law.

He presents short case studies from the past such as U.S v Swift, ASCAP-BMI, and United Shoe Machinery. These are all quite interesting and informative. Personally, I enjoyed reading these accounts.

We are then given longer chapter length accounts on the breakup of the Bell System and the consent decrees basically imposed on Microsoft. Epstein demonstrates what he was wrong with the Bell breakup. While those companies created after the breakup are all but united again, I think it is hard to believe that the old AT&T would have engaged or allowed all the innovation we have had since then. But then, AT&T was a monopoly that was created and protected by legislation, and that is a huge problem, in my view. There was competition on the way, but fought every step of the way with AT&T's massive firepower. Still, it is the process and method rather than the thing done that is Epstein's concern.

The author thinks better of what has been done with Microsoft, even if he finds much of the challenges against the company questionable or even resolvable in a "fair" way. For example, on page 103 the author discusses OS/2 and the damage done to it by Microsoft. Essentially, he concludes that since the operating system wasn't going be successful anyway, as demonstrated by its failure, it is hard to assign damages to Microsoft. This seems to me to be similar to an argument made by a thief who had stolen some crystal justifying himself by saying that since he believed the owner was going to drop and break the crystal anyway he really didn't steal anything of value.

Still, Epstein is right in showing the difficult of handling these things under tort law rather than as crimes. And if they were to be handled as crimes wouldn't that be too harsh in most cases? However, if companies know how hard it will be to do anything against them, all they need to do is calculate how much they can gain by every sharper business practices and subtract the likely costs of litigation with the government. If it is greater than zero, they should engage in the questionable (or more than questionable) business practices since there is no way to effectively deter them. (This is my conclusion, not Epstein's).

I think Epstein does point out some valuable lessons learned about these decrees and they should be kept in mind in future cases.
