    Book Description

Drug abuse has emerged only recently in the Republic of Maldives and is not widespread. In 1997, the government established the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) and a drug rehabilitation center to contain the drug problem. With the assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) a Rapid Situation Assessment (RSA) of drug use was conducted to obtain information such as the prevalence of drug use, the types of drugs used and the social characteristics of drug users. The results of this assessment are presented in this report.

5 out of 5 stars Information you won't find anywhere else.......2003-11-10

I have read several books on incorporating and consider J.W. Dicks to be one of the best business authors out there, relevent to legal and business savvy. Many other books are just expanded versions of the free information you can get from your state and the authors are just writers disseminating information and not real business people.J.W. Dicks will provide you with information that you won't find anywhere else. In addition to this book, I also recommend 'Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State" and "The Small Business Legal Kit" both by Dicks. The latter book also includes a handy disk with easy to fill out forms.I purchased a "How To Incorporate Book by Dics for my state (Minesota) where I just opned a business using the information in Dicks books and it saved me tons of money and time.Good books. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read - very complete.......2003-10-06

Using the advice in this and the companion book on how to incorporate in any state gave me all the information I needed to start my own corporations in the NY/NJ area.

Dicks books are outstanding - very complete. I highly recommend them to anyone aspiring to start a business and incorporate.

3 out of 5 stars OK for general education.......2000-09-14

Book is a good source of information about incorporating in general but the title is misleading and only mentions the particular state in the final chapter, a small one at that. Sample forms are too small in size,

The average workweek is 60 hours and rising. These days, it seems people are working harder than ever before. But does putting in longer hours necessarily translate to into greater productivity? Robert J. Kriegel thinks not. All too often, individuals respond to a chaotic work environment by racing to meet deadlines, spinning their wheels, and missing opportunities to create positive change. Kriegel suggests that finding success in today's business world means breaking old habits and adopting new ideas that can dramatically increase performance levels, like having younger employees tutor the more senior, technology-phobic. As conventional systems are challenged, dramatic new solutions are revealed, and everyone gets ahead without working so damn hard.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      4 out of 5 stars Hors d'oeuvres rather than a seven-course dinner.......2007-06-04

In this volume as in previous volumes (notably If It Ain't Broke...Break It! co-authored with Louis Patler in 1992 and Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers co-authored with David Brandt in 1996), Robert Kriegel offers a title, subtle, clever chapter titles, and a few insights that attract attention. That is not easy to do, especially now when there are almost 300,000 books in print that address many of the same issues Kriegel does.

Out of curiosity, as I read each of the 27 chapters, I attempted to formulate a key point or guideline for each, given the chapter's title. I found this to be an especially useful exercise, not because I learned anything new; rather, because I was reminded of what I already knew but tend to neglect. For example, without having as yet read the book, what do these chapter titles suggest to you?

                      "Rushing Slows You Down"
                      "Try Easier"
                      "Joe DiMaggio Never Bunted"
                      "Think Like a Beginner"
                      "Odd Couples Make Perfect Partners"

The chances are that what you come up with in response to these chapter titles is quite similar to what Kriegel recommends.

Of course, you already know that haste often makes waste. Kriegel observes that as a result of the emphasis on speed, "everyone has shifted into high gear, rushing, racing, and running. The workplace has been inflicted with hurry sickness. It's full-tilt boogie time. No slow dancing allowed. What's the problem? You're thinking. You want speed; you've got to speed up." Right? "Wrong! Speed doesn't come from rushing. The opposite is true. Rushing actually slows you down." This is only one example of several hundred observations that Kriegel shares throughout his book.

Note: Presumably William Shakespeare had a Latin expression in mind ("festina lente," make haste slowly) when he has Norfolk express this concern in Henry VIII:

                      "We may outrun
By violent swiftness that which we run at,
                      And lose by over-running."

My suggestion to those who consider purchasing this book (currently for only $11.66 from Amazon and Borders online) is that they read various Customer Reviews of Kriegel's books and then take advantage of the opportunity to sample some of the actual material in one or preferably several of them. Kriegel's style is not for everyone, nor is all of his advice immediately relevant to each person's own needs and interests.

We all know that there are times when we have to work "damn hard" and even then, the results are not always satisfactory. We also appreciate the importance of speed while recognizing that haste can "make waste." Of course, Kriegel knows all this. He has worked "damn hard" to develop his own career. I know him only by reading his books. He comes across as a dynamic, hard-charging, and charming person with a lively sense of humor. Never dull. Sometimes enlightening.

As other reviewers of Kriegel's various books have also suggested, however, he offers no head-snapping revelations and tends to recycle many of his unconventional opinions without developing them in depth. Stated another way, Kriegel offers more advice than analysis. If you need some thought-provoking perspectives and cage-rattling opinions on career development and especially productivity, this book could offer what you seek.

But if you need help with identifying and then addressing root causes that are limiting your success in business, there are other, more substantial sources to consider. For example, Tom Rath's recently published StrengthsFinder 2.0. Those who purchase a copy have exclusive access to a Web site (i.e. http://www.strengthsfinder.com/) at which valuable diagnostic exercises and results analysis are available - at no additional cost -- from the Gallup organization.

                      4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-11-12

If you still think you have to hammer yourself to get ahead, stop doing two things at once and listen to Robert J. Kriegel. The author, an expert in human performance and the psychology of change, says most people work too strenuously at a frantic pace that generates stress and reduces performance. You can perform better if you work smarter, even at 80% or 90% of your current buzz. If you've read human potential success books, some of this will sound familiar, but Kriegel focuses on becoming successful while having a full personal life. He quotes managers and employees, and outlines exactly what you should do. You're on your own figuring out what a 90% effort amounts to, but if you're a mid-level manager or executive who likes Kriegel's idea of winning-by-easing-up, we recommend that you somehow find the time to read his book.

1 out of 5 stars Great Title, But..........2002-05-02

I'll admit it, the title got me. I probably read two business books a year, and this one didn't offer anything new. Most of it was new twists on the same old rules. It was not inspiring, motivating, or compelling.

                      2 out of 5 stars misleading.......2002-03-10

The title is fulfilled in only the first two chapters or so. The rest of the book is management advice, which is decent advice (listen to your customer, etc), but I've read it elsewhere. I wanted to read what the title promised. Only happened on a minority of the pages. Disappointing.

                          Book Description

Presented here together for the first time are the greatest of the ancient Chinese classics of strategic thought: The Complete Art of War. Probably the most famous work of strategy ever written, Sun Tzu's Art of War has sold millions of copies in many languages around the world. Lost for more than 2000 years and only recently recovered, the Military Methods of Sun Pin (Sun Tzu's great-grandson) is a brilliant elaboration on his ancestor's work. Only The Complete Art of War brings the wisdom of these two ancient sages into a single volume and gives the reader a unique opportunity to master the essentials of Chinese thought on strategy, organization and leadership.

The Sun family writings on strategy have proven their value through the ages, and they continue to reward careful study. By unveiling the complex, often unexpected, interrelationships of armies locked in battle, they reveal the enduring principles of success in the struggle of life itself. With a practical index to the essential principles of strategy, and Ralph Sawyer's thoughtful chapter-by-chapter commentaries, The Complete Art of War  is designed to bring the reader new insights into the nature of human conflict.

Whether it is playing the game of politics or building a successful marriage, closing a deal or managing a large organization, making war or even making peace, The Complete Art of War  stands as one of the ultimate guides to a deeper understanding of human affairs.

5 out of 5 stars The teachings of the greatest military geniuses of all time........2003-11-10

Sun Tzu collected his teachings into the ancient Chinese treatise on military strategy known as "The Art of War" about twenty-five hundred years ago. Afterward his teachings were passed down through the Sun family, or a group of disciples, who edited or expounded upon the original writings until they assumed their current form. Sun Pin was the great-grandson of Sun Tzu, and he used the teachings of his brilliant ancestor to develop his Treatise "Military Methods". This wonderful translation by Ralph D. Sawyer includes both of these ancient texts.

"The Art of War" has been studied the world over by military, political and business leaders seeking to understand the nature of human conflict in all it's forms. Although thousands of years old, the teachings of Sun Tzu remain relevant even today. The maxims of Sun Tzu have been applied by students of "The Art of War" to such modern conflicts as the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Sun Tzu's teachings range from the seemingly simple, such as "Someone unfamiliar with the mountains and forests cannot advance the army", to the more complex and thought provoking, such as "In order await the disordered. In tranquility await the clamorous. This is the way to control the mind." The manual covers such diverse topics as training, supplies, terrain, the seasons and the use of spys, and includes detailed commentary by China's greatest military leaders through the centuries.

"The Art of War" should be read by anyone who studies military history or strategy, and is part of the curriculum of many of the world's military academies. Studying the teachings of Sun Tzu can help you to form strategies for conflict resolution or negotiating in business, political or social endeavors through a greater understanding of human interaction.

5 out of 5 stars Sun Tzu and Sun Pin are timeless.......2001-06-18

The Art of War is the oldest and best military treatise this world has seen. It is amazing how Sun Tzu can talk about strategy and warfare in thirteen short chapters. His book is just the best about competition and strategy. And now we get to Sun Pin, the military strategist. I have awesome respect for him. He was betrayed and mutilated by his best friend, and still, he survived. He defeated his nemesis in a great strategic way that Sun Tzu would have mostly likely done. These two are the best and if they were in this world today, they would won every war that we fight, by their ability to adapt. If you want to get Ancient Strategy and Chinese Culture, get this book.

The publishing of both Sun Tzu's and Sun Pin's works together makes for a valuable purchase. I've found that this translation is also quite easy to follow, and the comments assist with interpretation. These works represent awesome insights into the nature of warfare.

The text does not remotely fill the entire page to lengthen the book and suggest a happier price. Sun Pin's addition is severely garbled because the original text was damaged and it's contadictory. The most likely reason that Sun Pin's methods were forgotten and preserved only in a tomb was because (GEE GOLLY) people believed it wasn't worth reading. The commentary uses the word obvious extremely often among various other uneeded lengthening exercises. The author describes himself as an imaginative entrepenuer.(Sun Tzu flirts with perfection)

A classic! Find inspiration in some of history’s great military victories as others have for over 2,400 years. Sun Tzu was the most famous military scientist, and one of the ablest commanders, in ancient China. Asian warlords, and modern leaders as dissimilar as Mao Tse-tung and General Eisenhower, have used his principles to change the shape of the world. Interpreted here by General Tao Hanzhang, one of the architects of the Communist Revolution, Tzu’s advice on timing, maneuvering, flexibility, and knowledge of the enemy’s leaders, strengths, and weaknesses is as powerful today as when it was first issued.

"When the strike of a hawk breaks the body of its prey, it is because of timing." So wrote the Chinese strategist Sun Tzu more than two millennia ago in the text that has come to be known as The Art of War, one that guides military planners to this day. Former infantry officer Mark McNeilly examines the lessons of Sun Tzu's book not metaphorically, as he did for the boardroom in his Sun Tzu and the Art of Business, but literally, considering its dicta on such matters as the necessity of speedy action and solid leadership in the light of real battles and campaigns throughout history--and those yet to be fought. For instance, McNeilly looks at the Allied victory over Iraq in the light of Sun Tzu's pronouncement, "Just as flowing water avoids the heights and hastens to the lowlands, so an army avoids strength and strikes weakness." Matching intelligent commentary with a complete text of Sun Tzu's classic, McNeilly's book is of much interest to students of military history and current events alike. --Gregory McNamee

                          Book Description

Long acknowledged as a classic text on strategy, Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been admired by leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong and General Norman Schwartzkopf. However, written two thousand years ago, the book can be somewhat daunting to the modern reader. Now Mark McNeilly, author of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business, which made Sun Tzu accessible to the business executive, has extracted the six concepts most applicable to modern warfare, making them easy to understand and apply to military situations. Drawing on a wealth of fascinating historical examples, McNeilly shows how these six principles might be used in wars of the future-both conventional wars and terrorist conflicts-and how they can provide insight into current affairs, such as the war on terrorism and China's increasingly important strategic and military role in the world. In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, McNeilly has written a new chapter for this paperback edition, which addresses how Sun Tzu's ideas can be applied to the war on terrorism. He also describes how to win the information war, how to lead by example, and how to use alliances to defeat the opponent. Including the full text of The Art of War in the popular translation by Samuel Griffith, with cross-references to quotations used in the book, Sun Tzu and the Art of Modern Warfare unlocks these elusive secrets for anyone interested in strategy and warfare, whether they are professional soldiers, military history buffs, or business executives.

I read this book back in 2003 and I was totally blown away by it. This is an excellent book to read if you have ever tried to understand Sun Tzu and failed miserably. McNeilly gives you real life military examples and applys them to Sun Tzu. The real life examples help you get a feel for The Art Of War. After your done McNeilly has "The Art Of War" in the back of the book for your reading pleasure. Now you will be able to understand it more in depth, and truly appreciate it after McNeilly gives you the keys to it's interpretation. This book is well worth the time you will invest reading it.

1 out of 5 stars Treats Sun Tzu as Scrabble.......2004-07-13

If this is the only military theory you were ever going to get, got your history from comic books and the movies, and had never made a serious study, this would be OK. Otherwise, avoid this junk studiously and stick with Griffith.

There's nothing here that any junior officer hasn't expounded upon in the o-club, usually after they've had a few after an excersize. The various "quotes" given are removed from context, interpreted selectively, and some even originate the commentators, not with Sun Tzu. The way this is done you could get the same strategy advice from a Scrabble set.

His history is so poor I lost track of the incorrect dates. Some of the examples have nothing to do with the text used to supporting it if it is correct. He botched the Griffith translation completely, leaving out the footnotes that don't support his position.

This is one more book intended only to be sold at overpriced business seminars. Small wonder it sell so cheap on the aftermarket.

5 out of 5 stars Sun Tzu for the Western World.......2003-11-10

It is basically the author's interpretation of Sun Tzu's the Art of War and applies it to modern military strategy. The book also puts it in Western context using Western military battles as examples. I liked the author's grouping of the teachings into principles and the examples that he gives. Also his chapter on Sun Tzu and terrorism gives the book a relevant feel. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to get a grasp on the ides of the ideas of The Art of War, especially in a Western context. But I would also highly recommend reading through the translation of the original at the end of the book. I give this an A on the StuPage.

Miss Prior's Eloquent use of prose in her poetry and the fabulous novelette are simply must-read material. The only Problem is the lack of printed versions that can be red and savored when the lights go out.

I really like what this publisher does. This was one of the first ebooks ever released -- and yat it has way more effects than the ebooks coming out nowadays. The sound track is incredible. The story is fast-paced and held me through every minute. However, the platform/layout is not as easy as what's available now. But the publisher knows this. I emailed them at whitebones@windstormcreative.com and mentioned that I liked the books but they should think about laying it out using 2001 tech. They said they planned too... and if anyone sends them the inside flap of this first edition CD they'll send you a copy of the new format for FREE. That's what I call customer service. Overall, a great story made better with a ton of anime-like artwork and a stand-alone A+ rock soundtrack.
