Great Book for Summer Desserts.......2007-08-05
I am of the opinion that summertime desserts should be light and cool; they should also be quick and easy since most of us would rather be sunning at the pool, working in our garden, or just enjoying the beautiful weather; we don't want to spend precious time in the kitchen cooking. I recently purchased Icebox Pies by Lauren Chattman, and have been delighted with this book.
Icebox Pies has colorful pictures of numerous decadent pies, all either chilled or frozen. There are recipes for 15 easy to make crumb crusts, which are much quicker than the rolled kind. Of course there is a plain old graham cracker crust which all of us need to make from time to time, but the boring stops there and the remaining crust recipes are much more exciting. The fillings are innovative and absolutely mouthwatering - there is something for every taste here. Ms. Chattman has even included toppings and garnishes so that the pies are suitable for serving at any dinner--from a simple and casual family barbecue to a fancy dinner party.
Besides the colorful pictures, I like the comments on each recipe which give suggestions on ingredients or helpful hints on each particular recipe. The book is well-written and organized. There is an introduction that gives information on the making of icebox pies and also describes icebox pie ingredients. The table of Contents and Index are both excellent.
Although most of the recipes are quick and easy, they don't call for disgusting convenience foods like frozen whipped topping. Ms. Chattman is a real chef and knows what good food is supposed to taste like. She has used her imagination to come up with beautiful, decadent pies that have a minimum of ingredients and can be made ahead. My family loved the Pina Colada Pie and the Rich Chocolate Mousse Pie.
My only problem with this book is that I want to make all 100 recipes every time I look at the book, and can only make one at a time!
Retro Pies Without an Oven.......2004-02-19
The description of no-bake and no-fail pies is a bit misleading, since about half (if you exclude the ice cream pies) of pie fillings have to be cooked in a pot on the stove. However, it is true that these pies always work no matter how clumsy you are in the kitchen. You must leave these pies in the refrigerator or freezer for several hours to finish the recipes. Most of all, they taste good and are easy to do, since you never bake them.
I am glad somone wrote this book. The whole spectrum of old fashioned pies that do not get baked has virtually disappeared; to get a recipe, you will need to consult a cookbook that is at least 30 years old. This is ashame, as many of these pies are easy to do and taste fabulous, and are definitely worth doing in your home (but probably not as a restaurant dessert). There is a lot of history in this collection of pie recipes.
The first chapter has 15 recipes for pie crusts. Fortunately for us clumsy people, all of them are based on cookies or crackers that you crush in a food processor. No doughs or rolling pins here. You just press it into a pie pan and bake for a few minutes. My complaint here is that all of them are either very sweet (from using packaged cookies, which is very clever) or strongly flavored (from graham crackers). I could not find one that was relatively neutral in flavor.
There are roughly 70 or so pie recipes. They include mousses and custards (20), chocolate (17), fruit (10), ice cream (17), showstoppers (7). The crusts and finishing touches are listed as suggestions at the end of each pie filling recipe, so you get to choose what you want and can vary them if you want. The fillings are mainly based on cornstarch (custards and pastry cream), whipped cream (cream pies), whipped egg whites, and gelatin (variously bavarian cream, chiffons, mousses, etc., although the author does not always use these terms as appropriate). There are many varied fillings, including a few cheesecakes and some fruit pies.
My complaints are few. Some of the caption texts are pastel colored fonts which are sometimes hard to read. Some of the cooking procedures are unusual and called for extra steps, but are easy to follow and always worked. There is also an occassional lack of detail in the procedures, such as making caramel or mixing melted chocolate into a cold substrate like whipped cream.

tasty combinations, wonderful pictures and yes you can convert to low calorie desserts espectially weight watchers style. All you need do is exchange lite cool whip for heavy cream, and in some pies use the pre made low fat crust in the stores.
Beautiful Cookbook!.......2002-09-26
I collect cookbooks and this is one of the best! It's easy to follow and the "no-bake" recipes are just outstanding. I truly love the photography in this book (by Duane Winfield--an obvious talent). The strawberry cheese cake pie on page 36 is-to-die-for and so simple! My pie almost looked as good as Mr. Winfield's picture!

It's Hot Out Today, a Dessert from the Icebox Sounds Good.......2005-06-16
With the temperature the way it is today, anything from the icebox seems better than things that comes from the oven. Then when I started looking at the pictures of thing made with puddings, ice cream, cookies, cakes, pies, tarts, oh dear!
The basic rules here are: minimal cooking (sometimes a stovetop for a few minutes), easy to find ingredients (is there anywhere in the country, even the world, where you can't find Oreo cookies?), chocolate (mandatory, unfortunately addictive -- do you suppose the druggie cops will find out about this one?), some liqueurs (and wines and spirits, especially things like Grand Marnier), fresh fruits, frozen pound cake. etc.
The fun of cookbooks is taking their recipes and adjusting them to your own likes. Two days from now I'm taking the dessert to a dinner. Her Chestnut Mouse Charlotte with Chocolate-Orange Sauce looks to me like it will convert well into Pecan Mouse Charlotte with Chocolate-Orange Sauce and a layer of Coconut on top of everything else. Hmmmm! Maybe a little Grand Marnier on top of that.

This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy.
Good, but could be better.......2000-10-20
This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully.

A great book for the evolving fly tyer.......2006-03-22
This book is a great resource for both beginner and advanced tyers...tyers who are looking to get better at their approach and technique. The insights that Mr. Best relays in his work are gained from thousand and thousands of ties. Having trouble with spinning a deer hair muddler head - I'll bet you can get some help from his section on just this topic - including how to better clip them. Same goes for his tips on building wings and proportionate bodies, tails, etc. My personal experience here saw me go from a tyer with 6-7 years experience back in the ealry 90's, struggling with some techniques, to a tyer with a better understanding of what I was doing wrong, (or how I could overcome my difficulties), and produce a better fly, more quickly. Not necessarily an "enjoyable" read, but a read that you will get something out of...a "workbook" for lack of a better term. One I keep going back to - to brush up from time to time.
For Tyers with *SOME* knowledge, this is one of the best TECHNIQUE books.......2005-09-17
Simply put, this is a great book that will aid any fly- tyer, from a beginner who can barely stick a hook in a vise to the expert tying for a living!
As most fly tyers who are looking to purchase books on the subject know, most (if not all) tying- related books begin with a background on the tools of the trade and how to use them. Well, AK Best takes this and runs with it - in a VERY productive way! Sticking a needle into a cork to work with palm-held embroidery snips like a 3rd hand, etc... I could write a book just about this book! This book is not one of specific patterns, but rather one of techniques to be applied for multiple patterns.
Yes, the 'Flytyer's Benchside Reference' (ISBN 1571881263) is great for techniques, don't get me wrong! I don't care for that book's price, either, but it is a great book. Best's book, however, delves into more of the holistic view than the Benchside Reference. That is to say, Best looks at things in an efficiency-of-tying AND functionality-of-catching-fish perspective, where the Benchside Reference seems to simply list EVERY possible way of doing the task required without care for the time or energy used to tie. They both have their respective benefits: If you are looking for multiple ways of doing something, the Benchside Reference is the way to go; if looking for a very efficient way, then I find AK Best's book to be far superior.
For the crux of this book: graphics are large enough and numerous enough to fully see what is going on; language is narrative and brief, not using circumlocution to attempt a persona of godliness; the price is high for a book (in my opinion, as a cheap-skate), but worth it in the savings on materials alone. Again, this is a wonderful book for all tyers, regardless of experience.
Soft cover, solid information........2003-07-07
This paperback book is everything it's cracked up to be: umpteen tips on tying smarter and faster. The photographs are superb. A. K. still doesn't think much of many modern synthetics, exhibiting a strong preference for natural materials. Although not a professional, I just tie for my own use, this book will save me the purchase price in materials alone, with the time savings a bonus. This is not a recipe book - this is a how to tie in (fill in the blank) material better, more consistently, and quicker.

Brilliant selections!.......2001-12-22
Clint Willis has launched the Adrenaline Lives series with a strong first volume. The 21 selections are drawn from a wide variety of sources often not focusing on the Kennedys themsleves as much as other people's opinions of and reactions to the Kennedys. The book covers the whole family, with the bulk split between John, Bobby and Teddy. Mr. Willis has again avoided the trap of taking easy pickings - there are no PT 109 excerpts here, nor any rehash of the Bay of Pigs or Cuban Missile Crisis. The selections here are throughtful perspectives on on the people, their lives, and the culture that surrounded them. What I liked best about the book is that it is not biography, per se - you can't use this book for a research paper, but rather it is a collection of snapshots by people who know, knew and are associated with the Kennedys, and the insights you'll take from this book are likely not to be ones you're used to seeing unless you are a Kennedy scholar. I would have liked to have seen selections on Joe and young John, but there are none, and I see that as the only shortcoming.

This book is designed to address the challenges of Performance Budgeting in support of the Millennium Development Goals and in particular, how it applies to development issues in the Least Developed Countries. The United Nations Capital Development Fund supports the work of local governments in LDCs to plan, prioritize, implement and finance socio-economic infrastructure investments. UNCDFs approach emphasizes achieving sustainability in the local development process through requiring the local planning, budgeting, management, and monitoring of public expenditures. This local public expenditure management is closely aligned to and integrated with national planning and budgeting systems. Thus, appropriate capacity and funding mechanisms are developed at both levels. UNCDF has learned that local revenue mobilization and increased central government transfers do not determine how the internal system of a local government manages this revenue, plans for development, converts these plans into expenditure programmes or allocates funds to deliver them. Performance Budgeting seeks to convert budgets from an input-based to an output-based format. This requires the preparation of local development plans and the integration of these plans into local government budgets. The underlying theme of Performance Budgeting is two-fold: first, it seeks to introduce accountability into the performance review, implementation and planning process. Secondly, it seeks to construct measurability through economy, efficiency and effectiveness tests. The goal of all Performance Budgeting is for local governments to be able to prepare and implement local development plans within national development frameworks. These plans should result from inclusive, participatory, multi-stakeholder processes and should result in durable, sustainable planning, management, and financing structures. That durability should be seen through locally sustainable and targeted infrastructure and service provision that contributes directly to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Performance budgeting is more than the new buzz word in the development lexicon -- it is an evolving concept that is targeted directly at getting the biggest bang for your development buck. Its emergence on the development scene could not have come at a better time, when the world is scrambling to make up for lost time on the road to the Millennium Development Goals. PB is based on the assumption that presenting performance information alongside budget amounts will improve budget decision-making by focusing funding choices on programme results.
Development practitioners working in all areas have discovered that the best solutions to poverty are found through close consultation with those most affected, when the poor themselves are involved and empowered to plan what is most important to them, to participate in the resulting implementation and to be part of the resulting review process. That is why this book is targeted at both local authorities and those who intend to work with them. I found it a heavy read, but full of good information and practical advice. A must-read for anyone wanting to make a substantive and sustainable contribution to the cause of poverty alleviation in developing countries.

High unemployment in many European OECD countries has been attributed to factors ranging from rigid wages and low job mobility to an interaction of high taxes and generous social benefits that may discourage labor force participation and encourage the growth of an underground economy. This CESifo volume analyzes the effect of tax policy and, more generally, welfare state incentives, on the performance of the labor market. The contributors, all leading international economists, take both theoretical and empirical approaches; the book includes general overviews as well as in-depth analyses of specific policies.
Some chapters take a broad perspective on taxation and labor markets, considering such topics as the effects of taxes in both the conventional model of a competitive labor market and a more realistic imperfect market, the observed work differentials between Europe and the United States, and the potential for progressive taxes and redistributive benefits to boost employment. Other chapters examine the effects of tax reforms, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the wage-increasing effects of progressive income taxes in a highly unionized labor market. Finally, the contributors analyze the effects of employment protection and tax penalties on the growth of the underground economy. The insights offered in these studies will be valuable to the policy analyst as well as to the academic theorist.

Although there is a huge demand for accurate analysis of environmental policy outcomes in both the academic and policy-making communities, there is currently very little theoretical research on this issue. This ambitious book redresses the balance by constructing a new theoretical framework at the crossroads between economics and political science to account for the effectiveness of environmental governance. Drawing on insights from new institutional economics, environmental economics, collective action theory and social capital theory, the author analyzes how policy outcomes are influenced by institutional factors that constrain and empower the target groups of environmental regulation. This is the first attempt towards a general theoretical treatise of voluntary environmental agreements, based on a dual institutionalist approach that allows for comparisons between environmental taxes and agreements. The author systematically compares the performance of the radically different CO2 policy strategies of Austria, Denmark and the Netherlands - non-intervention, earmarked CO2 taxes and energy agreements. From this unique cross-national study, it is concluded that CO2 taxes are generally more effective than voluntary energy agreements which, if practiced in specific institutional settings, will outperform laissez-faire policy alternatives.

Volatile States identifies the sources of rising living standards by examining the recent economic and fiscal history of the American states. With new insights about the factors that contribute to state economic success, the book departs from traditional analyses of economic performance in its emphasis on the role of volatility.
Volatile States identifies institutions and policies that are key determinants of economic success and illustrates the considerable promise of a mean-variance criterion for assessing state economic performance. The mean-variance perspective amends applications of growth models that rely on the mobility of productive factors keyed to income levels alone. Simply measuring the level of growth in state economies reveals an incomplete and perhaps distorted picture of performance. Taking the volatility of state economies explicitly into account refines the whole notion of "economic success."
This book is essential reading for economists, political scientists, and policy-makers who routinely confront questions about the consequences of alternative institutional arrangements and economic policy choices.
