                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-05-20

Only a brave pair of authors would try to tackle a topic as all-encompassing as the need for courage in the modern business world, but that is exactly what Drs. Merom Klein and Rod Napier have set out to do. Do they succeed? Not entirely. While their diagnosis of the organizational ills plaguing today's companies is spot-on, their prescriptions are generic, involving "creating a safe environment," "building pride" and "keeping it fun." Despite the obviousness of some of the sound advice in the later chapters, the book shines in its first 70 pages, in which the doctors present an original, enlightening analysis of how organizational changes have altered the roles and responsibilities of mid-level workers. Based on this fresh perspective, we think that all readers could use a little Courage.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended by Stern's Management Review.......2003-07-09

The thrust of this book is to help facilitate organizational change through finding more courage both within yourself and inspiring it in others. The author's aim is to help the reader find 1) more candor to deal with the truth, 2) a greater sense of purpose, 3) a more optimistic will, 4) more disciplined rigor, and 5) a greater inclination to trust and risk. These are five quintessential dimensions of courage that bring people to cross an action threshold and persevere. Each of these factors is explored in separate chapters; specific how-to guidelines are presented and summarized. The book vividly deals with the emotions underlying the will to act; it is insightful and invigorating. We highly recommend it.

You can't plan for a collection of employees to become a hot group. It's not a committee or a task force. Governments can't legislate them into being. Employers may not even want them around, since they tend to be egalitarian and disordered--the opposite of a hierarchical structure. A group of young computer programmers could get together and work for days at a time, both for the love of computer programming and because they feel they're on the verge of an important moment, and the result could be Microsoft. A collection of writers, producers, directors, actors, and camera operators could get hired to work on a TV show, realize that show has the potential to be something different and special, and end up with Hill Street Blues. A team of middle-aged white males in suits and starched military uniforms could gather in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis, ultimately preventing any missiles from being fired.

The authors believe that hot groups are the antidote to lumbering, inflexible organizations, whether they be corporations, military chains of command, or government bureaucracies. They're what gives individuals in those organizations a chance to find meaning and fulfillment in their work, and they're what breaks through logjams and deadlocks and achieves what others had thought to be impossible. Along with lots of examples of hot groups in action, the authors provide concrete steps employers can take to form, manage, and get the most out of them. There's also a valuable cautionary chapter on how the dynamics of a hot group can be changed for the worse--a change in management, or a disturbance in team chemistry with the addition or withdrawal of a member. The point managers can take away from this book is that once you get such a dynamic team going, you have to let it run. Hot Groups, as much as any book can, shows how. --Lou Schuler

                    Book Description

Many corporations, in their attempt to create innovative products and services, have focused on the concept of building teams. While many groups fizzle, on rare occasions the members of a group will experience an extraordinary eruption of excitement, transcending an organization's rigid confines to achieve astonishing results. These individuals, say Jean Lipman-Blumen and Harold J. Leavitt, are lucky enough to be members of a "hot group," a phenomenon they lucidly and enthusiastically describe in their ground-breaking new book Hot Groups. A hot group is not a name for a newfangled team, task force, or committee. Rather, a hot group is defined by a distinctive state of mind coupled with a style of behavior that is intense and sharply focused on its ultimate goal. Stretching themselves beyond their own expectations, members of a hot group plunge into enterprises that have the potential to change, even ennoble, their own and others' lives. Neither trendy fabrication nor new management fad, hot groups have existed since the dawn of civilization, perhaps invigorating groups of cavemen to hunt together furiously for food before winter's approach. Today, examples of hot groups abound in territories such as Silicon Valley, where impassioned people have blazed paths through the burgeoning computer industry. Consider the hot group that created the original Macintosh and revolutionized the personal computer market. John Sculley, who joined Apple in the early 1980s, described a "magnetic field" that surrounded the Macintosh hot group members, and Bill Gates, Microsoft's mastermind, reported that a hot programming group to which he once belonged "didn't obey a 24-hour clock." Instead, they programmed for days at a time, pausing only to eat and talk about software with fellow programmers. Here also are examples of hot groups at work in other industries: the individuals that created the blockbuster TV drama "Hill Street Blues"; the Navy and civilian personnel that transformed a standard cruiser into a guided missile cruiser in less than 12 months; and even the ad hoc crisis management group advising President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile crisis. Indeed, the inspiring case studies found throughout Hot Groups illustrate that well-nourished hot groups can profoundly transform any type of organization. Still, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt recognize the risks inherent in loosening an organization's structural soil enough to accommodate these groups. Consequently, they address such issues as how to provide the kind of leadership required by a hot group, how to mesh a hot group with the regimented structure of the overall corporation, how managers can encourage new hot groups, and how best to cope with an overheated hot group. Drawing on decades of research and experience with groups and organizations throughout the world, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt have written an intensely engaging book about a phenomenon that will become increasingly important in our rapidly changing world. Expertly carving a path through this unmapped terrain, they lucidly demonstrate how managers and executives can ignite hot group sparks in their own organizations.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for those concerned with employee engagement.......2006-02-16

Many organizations are large, lumbering, overly organizational, and inflexible. The authors argue that the time is ripe for these large organizations to abandon their inflexible ways and embrace the idea that their organizations can benefit from creativity and chaos. The authors state that a little disorder can push these companies to new heights. Hot groups are based on this principle.

Hot groups are small, passionate, focused, creative, groups of individuals who also share a distinctive, task-obsessed state of mind. The hot groups must not be confused with teams, task forces, process-action teams, panels or boards. These groups are focused and generate what the authors define as "heat." The heat of a hot group comes from three core characteristics:

                    · Hot groups feel themselves engaged in an important, vital and personally ennobling mission.
                    · In hot groups, the task itself dominates all other considerations, including interpersonal relationships. This process is both intoxicating and arduous.
                    · Hot groups are relatively short-lived. The authors see these groups as burning intensely; however, their brightness fades quickly. Once the task is complete, the group fades away.

This book will also explain what hot groups think, how they feel, how they are best led, and describe the environment in which they thrive.

Great book - Full of ahHAs and insights, as well as implied tips and watch-outs. I was able to pull a great deal of information out of the book and integrate it into what I do when helping kick-start project teams. Have dropped major thoughts and concpets from the book into the both curriculum of our School for Innovators and the process of Thinking Expeditions. This is a MUST READ for any manager or leader who wants to make some improtant things happen fast - with his or her eyes wide open to the ramifications of a Hot Group's impact on the rest of the organzition.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-21

This book is about using and encouraging intense teams at work. Jean Lipman-Blumen and Harold J. Leavitt make it clear that hot groups are not a new management phenomenon. They have existed since the beginning of time. The ability of hot groups to respond to problems quickly with innovative solutions will make them an essential component of organizations in the future. Many of the techniques mentioned in this book can be used without instituting major changes in your organization. While the book offers many organizational case studies as evidence of the effectiveness of hot groups, it lacks hard numerical data showing the bottom-line results organizations get when they support hot groups. Despite that, we at getAbstract recommend this book to managers and leaders who want to introduce or use hot groups or are already using groups in their organization.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview for newbies, not much new for the experienced.......2000-04-01

I've just finished Hot Groups and am somewhat disppointed. Since this book is well written and does give a good overview on the need for hot groups and how to use them effectively in organizations, I'm assuming I wasn't very impressed because I didn't realize it's absolutely an introductory book. I imagine it might be helpful for people who have never had experience creating or working on ad-hoc groups or on short-term critical projects. Additionally, it might help people working in very large and bureacratic organizations. However, for anyone who has experience in working on short-term projects or crisis management, this book doesn't offer much that's new. I work in an Internet startup on short-term projects and the authors suggestions to "build a sense of community in your hot group; be aware your team will need downtime so as not to burn out; be aware communication is important, be aware of the political sensitivities within your organization..." are simply too obvious for anyone with experience working on important short-term projects. If you have such experience, this book isn't for you.

                    5 out of 5 stars Organizational Ignition.......2000-02-02

In the Preface, the reader is told: "The time is ripe for large, hierarchical, well-ordered organizations to make room for small, egalitarian, disordered hot groups. That is the first thesis of this book....The book's second and ultimately more important thesis is that hot groups are not good just for organizations. They are also good for people. They offer individuals opportunities to find meaning and ennoblement through their work. In our fast and impermanent new organizational world, those who work in organizations -- and that includes most of us -- both expect and deserve such opportunities." Here is how the book is organized:

Part I Hot Groups: What They Are and Why They're Hot

Part II Who Needs Hot Groups? And Who Seeds New Ones?

Part III How Do Hot Groups Operate?

Part IV An Optimistic View of What's Ahead

At this point early in my review, I want to stress that a "hot group" should be the logical, indeed inevitable result of a way at looking at organizational renewal. Think of the "hot group" concept as precisely that: a concept which affirms the value of a process by which individual members of any organization (regardless of its size or nature) can effectively collaborate. These members are "task-obsessed and full of passion." They share a style which is "intense, sharply focused, and full bore." Moreover, members of a "hot group" feel engaged in "an important, even vital and personally ennobling mission"; their task is "dominates all other considerations"; and although a "hot group" tends to remain intact only for a relatively short period of time, it is "remembered nostalgically and in considerable detail by its members."

Such groups require effective leadership. In Chapter 6, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt address this issue, suggesting a number of specific "options" when "hot group" is assembled and then charged with its mission. For example: "To develop a hot, task-obsessed group, think about people before you begin laying out a flow chart. Bring on the people. Getting the task done is not your solo job. It's the whole group's job." The leader is urged to "recruit wild ducks", then help the group to bring the right people in, to get the wrong people out, and with unexpected departures. According to the authors, there are two kinds of c"wars" and "races." In wars, the goal is to destroy the enemy; in races, the goal is not to destroy but to out-perform others. Also, "at least as much", to have members outperform themselves, to exceed their personal best.

In my opinion, this brilliant book makes two immensely important contributions to our understanding of what it takes to achieve superior organizational performance. First, it explains what the members of a "hot group" can themselves accomplish if given the leadership, freedom, and resources needed. Second, it explains what the positive impact of such a group can have on all others within the same organization. Paradoxically, a "hot group" is most effective within an organization that has stability, solid and enlightened management, and sufficient resources to support the group's efforts. That is certainly true of those associated with Xerox PARC, the Manhattan Project, Lockheed's "Skunk Works", and the Disney studios which produced the first full-length animated films.

If an organization is unwilling and/or unable to tolerate a "small, egalitarian, disordered" but NOT disorganized "hot group", it probably has problems which even the hottest of "hot groups" cannot solve.

                        Book Description

From the author of the best-selling The Chalice and the Blade...

The Gate takes us from a narrow escape from the Holocaust in Nazi Europe, first to pre-Castro Cuba with its throbbing sexuality and decadence, and then the 1950s United States pre-civil rights movement. It tells the mesmerizing story of a clever child becoming her own woman. When Riane Eisler fled her native Vienna with her parents in 1939, the young Jewish refugee left behind an affluent and cosmopolitan life. A totally different world awaited her in Havana. As she grows older, she develops a secret life, becoming involved with a sexy and fiery Marxist revolutionary. As her family regains wealth and prestige, the daughter better understands her parents, their complicated relationship, and her own place in the world.

This lyrical, lovely work, reminiscent of Marguerite Duras' The Lover, is much more than a memoir. It is a work of art that will call each reader to examine the birth of consciousness and soul in themselves and that, for a brief moment, will remind each of us that technology and consumerism, as fine as they might be, are not the fundamental needs of the human soul.

The Gate works on many levels - from scintillating romance to the psychological profile of an influential social thinker. By reading The Gate, the many readers of The Chalice and the Blade and Sacred Pleasure will learn for the first time the very personal events in Riane Eisler's life that lead her to the courageous and portentous insights about human relationships and social history later documented in her exhaustive research on both pre- and contemporary civilizations.

Never before has a noted thinker revealed the inner psychological drama of her own awakening so directly related to the development of her groundbreaking creation of social theory, embodied in her work of the last twenty years in creating the partnership model. It will be clear to historians how the events in Ms. Eisler's life awakened her to social action and discomfort with prejudice, violence and inequality. The Gate shows the common thread of injustice and man's inhumanity to man -ranging from the persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany, to the sexual and economic exploitation so rampant in Cuba, to the horrors of racism and justice in the United States itself. But above all, it is a book that will move every reader with its hope, faith, and love.

4 out of 5 stars The Unknown Community: Jewish Refugees in Cuba.......2000-07-22

With the turn of each page I began to realize that this was more than a semi-autobiographical work by one of the most well-regarded systems theorists of our era. Riane Eisler, the internationally acclaimed author of The Chalice and The Blade, Sacred Pleasure, Tomorrow's Children and numerous works on the women's legal rights, has brought to the attention of her audience an area of Jewish twentieth century history previously unknown to many....the role that pre-Castro Cuba played as a haven to thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in the late 1930's.

The Gate provides the reader with insights from a young girl's perspective, growing up with a culture, language, and socio-economic background significantly different than anything she or her family had experienced before. The reader perches on a young Eisler's shoulder as she explores the sights, scents and sounds of a tropical paradise, as she encounters her first love affair, and how she grows to understand the relationship and role her parents play in her life.

For readers familar with Eisler's concepts of partnership and dominator models of relationships, it is quickly apparent the role that her Cuban upbringing, her father, and the young idealistic revolutionaries she found herself surrounded by played in her research of these concepts in later years.

My one regret with this book is that Eisler does not continue to enchant the reader with the changes to come in her early adulthood as she enters the United States, witnesses the struggles her family must undergo to "start over" yet again, and as she begins her own exploration and growth as a lawyer and young mother. We get a mere taste of what is to come, instead of the full serving the reader begs for!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Let 'Em Treat You Like a Girl: A Women's Guide to Lead.......2004-11-16

Don't Let 'Em Treat You Like a Girl is a self help guide to leadership success made especially for women. Often unbeknownst to us as women, we often exhibit or illustrate aspects and attitudes that reflect stereotypical girlie qualities. We wear stylist stiletto heels and short skirts. We smile and nod a lot looking for acceptance. We decorate our cubicles and offices with knickknacks. We volunteer for any odd job just to help out the team.

To most of us, we feel we are just being kind, helpful, considerate, stylish, sexy, or cute. However, we rarely realize how these actions affect our reputations as strong, knowledgeable, powerful leaders. This book states that if we as women wish to be recognized and respected as equals in business we have to act like leaders and equals. We can't use our sexuality or our mothering qualities to our advantage and then turn around and expect our peers and employees to relate to and respect us as powerful businesswomen.

As I read this book, I recognized many of my female colleagues and acquaintances. I snickered to myself while reading these entries, recalling how ridiculous I thought these women were being even at the time. However, there were also several moments while reading this book when I confided to myself that I do or I have done a particularly girlie act that the author describes. Realization hit me as I then remembered the strange and blank looks I got from my colleagues when I did these things. Now I know why.

                                5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-02-15

If you listen to any review, listen to this one. I have read many CW books, and this one is very enjoyable.

                                Good:
                                Easy to read

                                Bad:
                                No Maps

The book is about Stonewall as a Soldier and how he relates to people and situations. There isn't a lot of detail over battles. Actually, most battle sections in the book are about 2 pages once the fighting starts.

Read this book for an enjoyable read on the mind and heart of Stonewall. But if you want a book that shows Infantry X attacked here, and Infantry Y attacked there then this isn't it.

                                That is a good thing..............

Avoid this book. As historian William C. Davis has noted, the author knows so little about his subject that he put a picture of a Federal cavalryman on the cover...that's not Stonewall Jackson. For a solid biography of Jackson, see James I. Robertson's work on the subject.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Most Successful Biography.......2003-08-25

John Bowers has written an eloquent account of Jackson, one of the South's most colorful and enigmatic generals. The author approaches the material with a sensitivity that is often lacking in Civil War literature. He does not attempt to hide behind a facade of objectivity, but rather tells us from the get go that he's a Southerner, with family ties to both sides of the fraternal conflict. I could identify with Bowers reluctance to draw near "that deep hole of obsession from which few Civil War buffs return." I have a grandmother who is supposed to have been from the South. From that point on I became hooked into reading the work with a kind of amused detachment. What emerged for me was a vivid image of the War Between the States "true eccentric"(Shelby Foote). On a more abstract level, I found myself entertaining the notion that there must be some value in eccentricity, as illustrated by the general's military genius. After all, wasn't eccentricity the heart of Romanticism? a popular movement throughout the culture of the South and the Civil War era. The kind of individualism that Jackson champions in his "ideal Rebel" state, seems to have all the ear marks of a great Romantic quest. The archetypal warrior (and we are all warriors on some level as readers) must view the world in terms of vision rather than as a kind of soul less empirical truth. At the risk of being completely misunderstood, I can't help believing there was more at stake in this "eccentricity" than the antiquated racial theories the General and his supporters defended. This book certainly facilitated my thinking about a very important chapter in American history. It is for me a highly commendable biography.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a biography, but it is by no means boring. I read it as a senior in high school. I was never a bookworm, but I began reading this book and couldn't put it down. I took it with me to every class and read it when I got home. My grades took a plunge, but it was well worth it!

3 out of 5 stars Basic Stonewall Jackson Overview.......2002-04-04

This biography is a quick overview of Stonewall Jackson's life and is written more as a historical sequence of events rather than a revealing depiction of the man's character.

                                    Book Description

In light of recent debates and studies on what political scientists call "developmental authoritarianism" and what some economists consider the East Asian model of economic growth, this book analyzes and evaluates Burma's economic performance under military management. It considers the relationship between democracy and economic growth, especially the thesis advanced by Asian authoritarian leaders that sociopolitical stability and discipline must be established as a prerequisite to economic development. Based upon empirical and historical facts, the book shows that the present military regime's denial of democracy to the people and its ostentatious economic reforms have not promoted real economic growth and human development in Burma. That regime, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), consists of poorly educated power-driven rulers. The book underscores that Burma's lack of economic development, despite its rich natural resources, lies in the regime's misuse of both human capital and those natural resources. They have depressed the country's social capability for past, present, and future economic development.

Mr. Coleman is considered one of the finest of baseball broadcasters, but his (and Mr. Valeni's) writing is rote - tell a lot of familiar yarns, and hope Red Sox fans will buy the book.

Ken Coleman was the announcer for the Browns and the Indians. I enjoyed reading about Jim Brown of the Browns and other football players. I remember a lot of the ball players for the Indians. They were noted for having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball in the late 1940s and 1950s. Ken was also the announcer for the Red Sox.

Although Ken Coleman was primarily identified with the Boston Red Sox, you don't have to be a fan of the Bosox to enjoy this book. (I'm a Tigers' fan.) Ken was blessed to be a part of the Cleveland Indians, Coach Paul Brown's Cleveland Browns during the days of the great Jim Brown, Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, and two stints with the Boston Red Sox, including the Impossible Dream year of 1967 (The Year of the Yaz.) The most interesting story that I found was Ken's telling for the first time the story of the decline of Indians' pitcher, Herb Score. People attribute Score's decline to the 1957 line drive off the bat of Yankees' infielder, Gil McDougald. However, Coleman relates that Score had his ankle injured in a spring training pickup basketball game in 1958 and tried to come back too soon before his ankle had a chance to heal and ended up with a sore arm. Ken provides us with a good summation of his career and his subsequent retirement from play-by-play work. He wanted to continue on a year-by-year basis, but an excuse was given that an announcer was wanted who would insure of being there for four full years. We are all remembered by what we give to others, and Ken Coleman gave his listeners and others he came into contact with a lot to remember. The Lord doesn't permit us to know all the good we do for others, but, in time, He will reward us. Thank you, Ken, for sharing your career with us.

Talking On Air: A Broadcaster's Life In Sports is the biographical story of Ken Coleman, former Boston Red Sox broadcaster who worked in Major League Baseball from 1954 to 1989, including ten years with the Cleveland Indians and four years announcing games for the Cincinnati Reds. In the twenty years he spend as the voice of the Boston Red Sox, Coleman became known to millions of New England baseball fans, making him an institution throughout the region, and eventually resulting in his election to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. Talking On Air is a "must" for baseball enthusiasts in general, and Boston Red Sox fans in particular!
