Inspiring.......2007-05-27

After receiving my disappointing MCAT score and three unsatisfying grades, I saw the world was tembling in front of me. I began to question myself. Do I really have what it takes to become a doctor? Maybe I am not smart enough to compete with other people. I was feeling very discouraged until I encountered John Maxwell's "Success: One Day at a Time." In the book, it says success is not measured by how much one accomplishes but by how many problems one encounters, and one should never give up their goal just because it is difficult at times. I read the entire book in one sitting. The book really helped me to divert my attention from focusing on my lackings to my strengths. It helped me to build a new attitude toward the means of acheiving my goal.

I wish more people just knew what was written in this book. Its not really what you did in one situation or another, its who you are that makes you who you are. so if you had a bad day or somebody turned you down or something, dont crumble into pieces, just keep living the way you want and eventually- sooner than later- that will pay high dividents

Inspiring and Encouraging.......2006-04-24

This book was given to me by a co-worker years ago when leaving my first counseling position. Ever since then it has inspired me and been a resource that I constantly utilize. Ive used it in my practice of therapy as well as my personal life. Great book that will never become outdated. Buy it and use it, and use it, and use it. Its always close by for a reference on my daily journey. Highly recommended.

Great snippets of wisdom!.......2000-04-11

I've always been a big fan of John Maxwell's work and this did not disappoint. This is a great companion book. Full of great, short, positive insights it's a great source of daily inspiration and wisdom. Maxwell still reigns as the leader in understanding leadership and vision and by culling the wisdom of great leaders he once again provides an inspirational and insightful book!

EXCELLENT, INSPIRING READING.......2007-09-27

I am in sales, my wife is aspiring to bigger things in her position at work. We both found this book to be very inspiring, thought provoking, and a source of encouragement to "keep pushing" at our jobs to excel. I've always enjoyed books that provided a source for generating enthusiasm, and this book does it in spades! it's an easy read, and a book that you can put down and go back to on an as needed basis. We thought so much of this publication that we purchased three additional copies to send to our Sons and a young friend as a means of inspiring them to work hard, excel and never let set backs get you down. We are positive thinkers, who always try to look at the bright side of life. This little book helps us stay motivated and be inspired each morning as we head off to work. I can't tell you how many times we've reread this book. Negativity is contageous, just as much as enthusiasm is. We can't stand negative people, who think negative thoughts. This keeps us on the road to positive thinking, positive attitude, a can-do attitude. My Wife does a newsletter that is sent to her associates each week, and has begun to include appropriate quotes from the book at the end of each one. The response from her managers, as well as her colleagues has been overwhelmingly positive.

Contents do not match the title.......2002-11-23

"Get a job in 30 days or less" is full of useful advice on various parts of a comprehensive job search, but if you thought this was a day-by-day guide to finding a job, forget it. The book has a very clever marketing title, but from a practical stand-point it is NOT a day-by-day list of 'things to do'. Firsty, it will take you several days just to read and work through the exercises in the 'Introduction' and 'Getting Ready' section. And to successfully land a job these exercises need to be worked through in depth. Unless you are a speed-reader and have NOTHING else going on in your life, you probably will not reach 'Week 1 - Day 1' until week 2. The authors provide you with lots of information for every day (including Sunday!) of week 1, for the following 3 weeks you are left pretty much on your own.
In summary, yes, the book has useful tips, however it works better as a reference book (there are sections on 'dealing w/headhunters', 'networking') than a day-by-day list of things to do to land that dream job. Maybe the title sells the book, but the editor or whoever came up with the title is doing a disservice to the reader. (The publisher is McGraw-Hill)

Mr. Daigler's work, Advanced Options Trading, provides a sound overview of option pricing models and the variables that influence pricing for stocks, futures, and exotics. The model of focus is Black-Scholes, though I give Mr. Daigler credit for a renewed look at works by Cox, Rubenstein, and Ross. In addition to the sometimes-tedious theoretics of options, Daigler examines hedging techniques and arbitrage. Overall, a rigid yet unimaginative examination of derivatives, nothing surprising just reaffirming. Floor trading and market makers may find its presentation a pleasant refresher, otherwise look to McMillian or Sheldon Natenburg's works.

Problem-Solving That Works.......2006-08-01

I've been looking for a good resource on problem solving for ages and finally found it in this (apparently overlooked) book. Countless other problem solving guides that I've found, and then discarded, offer only the most general advice and scattershot techniques. Successful Problem Solving, on the other hand, devotes at least half the book to exercises that help readers identify their own dysfunctional core beliefs (about competence, self-worth, safety and primacy of their own needs) that block their efforts to solve their most stubborn problems. This alone would be worth the price of the book.

What follows in the second half of the book is a proven step-by-step process for more effectively solving any kind of problem. This book is not for everyone, however (hence the four stars.) It requires active engagement in the exercises, a fair amount of time to think through the material, and a willingness to introspect, but for me paid off from the first few chapters in new insights, old resolutions kept and problems (finally) solved. I would recommend it to anyone with an intractable problem. This works.

Easy to read and the most useful for people initiating alliances. Attention to the soft side of alliances is the most useful. Very few people deal with this critical aspect of alliances. My colleagues and I want to hear more from this author.

An Indelible Impressionist Work.......2003-04-25

Several elements make this work exceptional. It consists of 37 vignettes during a decade of the author's early life in a California farming community that was trying to emerge from the Great Depression and continuing through much of World War II. One driving element is that each of these 37 chapters is initially linked with a starting headline in that day's newspapers involving one or more national or international events.
The individual vignettes sometimes reminded me of a good Impressionist painting -- splashy color, sometimes downright gaudy, but each is powerful as its own piece of ritual of entrance into adolescence and generally overcoming the obstacle of that day. At least some of these, particularly as they merge with the world scene of that slice of time, will become indelible for those of us who read its pages. Some stand out for their humor; others through the range of emotions from sympathy-empathy all the way to unbridled joy. And there are even a couple chapters that cope with those difficulties, problems, and occasional thrills that clearly relate to subtle and not-so-subtle hormonal changes.
Strongly recommend for men ages 25 and up. Its very nature is so masculine that I have no idea whether women would, by and large, enjoy a glimpse into its content. I suspect they would.
And, to this reviewer's judgment, there's little doubt but that a second book will be forthcoming. I'm keeping my open for that!

A Must Read.......2003-04-25

OK, who should read and would enjoy this book? First, anyone from the "GI" generation (Brokaw's The Greatest Generation) born 1901 -- 1924* or the "Silent Generation" born 1925 -- 1942.* They can remember a time in America when a 10-year-old could go out to play in the morning and his parents not worry about him unless he was late for dinner. Those who remember can play "Nostalgics" (a word coined by Shelley Berman) and relive those days. Boomer generation members, born 1943 -- 1960, will love it because it shows a time in America that they were born into - but lost. Generation X, born 1961 -- 1981 can begin to understand that all those wonderful stories the old man (their fathers and grandfathers) told are really true. The Millennial Generation and beyond, born 1982 -* should read it so they will listen with more attention to the old men. They can learn so much!

What a story! Richard Rohrbacher starts it in 1935 and skillfully makes a youngster spring to life before your eyes. From hanging around a construction site to the first guilty feelings of an adolescent that can't help but fall in love (lust?) with his 8th grade teacher. From the sad musings of old man about dying to the youngster's hilarious fear of dying himself from an "advanced case of acutum masturbatum morbindus," Richard keeps your face in his book.

The narrative saddens, as did the whole world, as first, his love (the teacher) left to join the WACs. Then his family, then his friends as ". . . we watched the June graduates trade their gowns and mortarboard for uniforms." They also ". . . wondered if our name was slated to appear on some future casualty roster . . ."

This book captures, in an easy readable way, life in America as the world skid inexorably into WWII.

An amusing and heart-warming book about the author's adventures while growing up in a mid-sized farming community in Northern California in the years 1935-1945. The author presents a nostalgic and true-to-life picture of life in an American community in those "innocent years," while at the same time showing the impact outside events had on his and his family's life and on the community.

A "must read" for baby-boomers (like me!).......2003-01-25

An enchanting autobiographical account of growing up in California's Central Valley town of Stockton. I enjoyed following young Buck's adventures and his perspective of the events, both personal and historic, in the 10 years (1935-1945) "before the bomb". As a baby boomer, this book gave me some great insight and appreciation of what both my parent's lives might have been like when they were growing up and perhaps a better understanding of the "older generation's" take on our current world events and American culture. I hope Richard Rohrbacher has a sequel in the works!
