    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2005-09-23

I have 2 issues with this book:

    1. Why is this book listed at $27-31, when it is printed $12.00 on the back? I feel ripped off.

    2. This book is AMATEUR. I EXPECTED SOME GOOD INFORMATION, NOT "don't do drugs on your lunchbreak, it will affect your work," or "don't try to be cute, it is not professional." Another good tip I learned, "No screaming, swearing, or throwing things." Who needs to be told to NOT do this? Please. Oh, something else I learned, "Any hairstyle that requires a diffuser should be reconsidered." OMG Please.

    1 out of 5 stars Very Elementary.......2003-04-18

This book is for an entry level assistant. I have been working as an assistant in corporate America for 10 years and needed something to motivate and refresh me. This isn't it. This is an explanation on how to organize files, answer phones and basic business etiquette. Perfect for someone starting out.

3 out of 5 stars HOW TO BE A GOOD SECRETERY 101.......2001-11-08

This is a good introductory text on being a secretery or a receptionist. This would be most useful for people just starting out without any office experience who don't know what a spreadheet is. To anyone else the text is too basic, though it covers a wide range of office related matters and because of that this might be useful as how to reading for a newly appointed office manager with no prior experience. What this doesn't reveal are any tricks of the trade you would expect an old salt to have. Also disturbing is the casualness with which the author accepts the abuse she endured as secretery from the egotistical octopuses in the entertainment industry that she worked for.

    3 out of 5 stars Ok but..........2001-06-16

This will help those who a really starting out in the business and need some great ideas. Well written and to the point.

3 out of 5 stars Useful if you have no administrative experience.......2000-07-22

This book is a useful one if you're new to the world of administration and have not worked as an admin or executive assistant before. However, I found that the tips and ideas the author provides are very basic common sense and really didn't get much new out of it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a few years of admin experience under their belts.

3 out of 5 stars Some beautiful design examples, distracting separator plate.......1999-03-23

I bought this book because of the beautiful lacy detail work Sylvia does on her cakes, but the more I looked at the cakes in the photos, the more I kept saying, there is something wrong with the way these look. Sylvia uses very large separator plates and does not blend in the base to the top of the cakes. The look is very distracting to the overall presentation. It is a shame because many of her designs are so elegant. I would not reccomend this book as a sole source of cake decorating tips.

In this collection of anecdotes of the "famous people I have known" variety, John Kenneth Galbraith lets his hair down--well, as much as a Harvard economist in his 90s might be expected to, anyway. Despite the informality, Galbraith's prose is suffused throughout with dignified precision, even at its most profane (as in his recollection of his extemporaneous evaluation of incomplete returns from the 1948 presidential election: "I think Thomas E. Dewey may well be shitting in his blue serge pants"). For the most part, Name-Dropping concerns itself with the major American statesmen from the Democratic party of the mid-20th century--Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson--but Galbraith also shares his reminiscences of working on Adlai Stevenson's two failed campaigns against Eisenhower ("no modern politician," he writes of the experience, "had a more faithful coterie of supporters") and of Eleanor Roosevelt, "who, but for the accident of history and the prevailing constraints of gender, could have been President in her own right." On the international front, there's a brief encounter with Albert Speer, Hitler's architect and economic director, and more extended contact with Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister (Galbraith served as ambassador to India in the Kennedy administration). Name-Dropping is a slim connection of anecdotes, held together by little more than Galbraith's presence, but that is more than enough to make its behind-the-scenes history cohesive and, in its way, quietly entertaining. --Ron Hogan

                          Book Description

John Kenneth Galbraith, the noted economist, joined Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal in 1934 and served that administration during World War II in the crucial role of deputy head of the Office of Price Administration in charge of price control. His service to FDR and his relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt began a long involvement with the leaders who would define much of the course of the twentieth century: Truman, Stevenson, John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy, Nehru, Lyndon Johnson, and others at home and abroad. Drawing on a lifetime of access to many of the greatest public figures, Galbraith creates a rich and uniquely personal history of the century -- a history he helped to shape. We are invited to hear FDR on the Great Depression and World War II; Albert Speer, the Third Reich's architect and armaments minister, on the boorishness and incompetence of the Nazi leadership; John F. Kennedy, from youth to the presidency; Jacqueline Kennedy's shrewd judgments of the White House inner circle. In this clear-eyed, unsparing, and amusing look back at the world and the people he has known, Galbraith tells what these leaders did -- how they looked to him then and how they look to him now -- with unforgettable reminiscences and a rich infusion of engaging anecdotes. Name-Dropping charts the political landscape of the past sixty-five years with the dazzling insight, humor, and literary skill that mark Galbraith as one of the most distinguished writers of our time. Just some of the portraits . . . Eisenhower's brother remembered a meeting in the Oval Office at which some difficult and potentially very unpopular decision was reached. Reflecting on the expected adverse reaction, Ike had said, "It's all right. When I've explained it to the press, no one will have any clear idea what we intend to do." Kennedy's preference for plain talk did not spare his friends. Before I left for New Delhi in April 1961, we had a farewell breakfast at the White House. That morning the New York Times had a piece on the new ambassador to India; Kennedy asked how I liked it. It had been generally favorable, and I said it was all right, but I didn't see why they had to call me arrogant. "I don't know why not," said Kennedy. "Everybody else does." Nehru said that one day at Gandhi's ashram in Ahmedabad a friend and supporter sought to ease a conflict with the British Viceroy by saying, "Mahatma, you must know that Lord Irwin never makes a decision without praying over it first." Gandhi reflected on this for some minutes. Then he said, "And why do you suppose God so consistently gives him the wrong advice?" Johnson once said to me, "Did it ever occur to you, Ken, that making a speech on economics is a lot like pissin' down your leg? It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else." Not since have I given a speech on economics without having that metaphor in mind.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read by Academic "Economist". Last Great Socialist........2002-09-12

John Kenneth Galbraith was at one time a hero of mine. Read more than 10 of his books over the years. Bought this book and read it having been a hero of mine. I urge for all people to read to this book for the sole reason to show how out of touch, "ivory tower" tenured intellectuals has misguided us.

The 20th is ending and the era of "ivory tower egghead" is coming ot a close. The preeminent egghead is Professor Galbraith and this books is a clarion call of a out of touch egghead socialist. Buy it for records.

As a former student of economics and history, only when one leaves the university does one realize none of these people have ever had a "real" job so much as working McDonald. Tenure has given them lifelong employment-what in China is called the "iron rice bowl".

Professor Galbraith has written over 30 books. However, has this man ever open a business, work at a private company, try to make a product or services that the people want and need.

Academica and Government are havens for those who want job security, lifetime employment and insulation from the marketplace and the "customer".

Professor is the ultimate egghead socialist and dreams up fantasies where everyone lives "fulfiling life" with jobs, health care, and education. The Soviet Union and China failed miserably building stagnant socialist economies and the whole world is moving from a planned economy to a market economy. This books by Professor Galbraith is a testament to "ivory tower egghead" who refuse to confront reality. Never mind the "egghead" refuses to get a real job where they have to actually work for a living.

I recommend all to buy this book. Agree or Disagree. This book is a final testament of the greatest "egghead" of them all and how the world is moving to markets and totally bypasses them and yet they continue to champion socialism and collectivism: ideas that are going the way of the dinosour.

2 out of 5 stars Requiem for an old Socialist.......2000-11-02

My daughter gave me this book as a gift, I guess, because I'm an economist. I wish she hadn't. Others obviously think Galbraith's musings more than a little entertaining; I don't. He came across to me as asserting that the only people worth knowing were the ones he once served/worked with. I would rate some his ancedotes as amusing, but the flavor of the book seemed to be that of a very old man, whose core beliefs have been repudiated by history, claiming that the idea of a command economy just didn't get a fair shake. All these socialist countries just haven't done it right, and they just don't make 'em like they used to.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Dose of Intellectual Humor.......2000-10-27

Name Dropping is a great high-level recap of Galbreath's insider experience as an influential 20th century statesmen. Like a grandfather recounting the salient parts of our recent American history and his career, its everything that you would not expect from an agricultural economist -- entertaining, witty, and easy to read. Highly recommended for train rides, short flights, or rainy days.

What a great read this is. Galbraith brings out a personal side of people we could only imagine exists. Of course, he reveals the same of himself. (Ever see a picture of him smiling?) The book reads quickly. In fact, my only complaint about the book is that I got so relaxed while reading it that I fell asleep too easily. (I read late at night). I'm sure, as I did, you'll be envious of Galbraith's acquaintances with the "characaters" of this book. Buy it!

The world turned upside down for city-bred Marjorie Douglas when, in 1943, her young husband moved her and their baby, Anne, from suburban St. Paul to a western Minnesota stock ranch to help his parents stave off financial disaster. With wit and wisdom Douglas's memoir describes a midwestern way of life of fifty years ago.

I absolutely loved this book. I'm a city girl who at the time I read this book had been transplanted to a hobby farm in Kansas. I always recommend this book to any "newcomers" to the country. I was sad to see the book end! Definitely a must read!

5 out of 5 stars A long, weary, happy, sad life.......2004-11-27

Marjorie Myers never guessed she'd be spending the next 17 years of her life on an out of the way farm way the heck out in Western Minnesota; she'd been happy and content living the urban lifetsyle of busy, bustling St. Paul. But then she fell in love and got married, in the middle of World War II, and the next thing you know she was living among her in-laws, a mixed blessing at best. This is her memoir of her years in what amounted to another country for her, a time when she learned a lot about a simpler life and a more arduous one as well. For if America changed a lot between 1943 and the beginning of the "New Frontier," it never changed as much as for people living on stock ranches like Marjorie. She never thought she'd be killing animals, much less ones she had gotten to love as pets and friends, but the hard way of the farm got her used to it. At bottom she remained the same endearing, enchanting woman she had started out with, and you know what?

She came out of her experience a whole lot smarter and with more of a natuve wisdom about the way things work, not only on the farm but in the secret chambers of the human heart. If you like Mary Gaskell's novels of 19th century farm life, you will enjoy this true account, s beautifully written, of one'woman's farm wife experience, and you will grow to love her husband, "Don," and understand why a man like that could make a woman leave her former home and follow him even unto a farm not much removed from the famous COLD COMFORT FARM. Highly recommended for both city and country folk.
