      Book Description

A judge's legal ruling can be a complex interaction between facts and laws. However, if a judge bases his ruling on erroneous technological theories, speculation, and forecasts, the final decision will be a wasteland of legal mumbo-jumbo, incomprehensible to both lawyers and critics. This is what happened when Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson decided the Microsoft antitrust case, ordering the division of the software giant into two separate companies.

In a major new study of the Microsoft antitrust case, Hudson Institute economist Alan Reynolds examines, point for point, every Finding of Fact on which Judge Jackson based his conclusions. He critiques the accuracy, consistency, and relevance of nearly all of the judge's 412 Facts, finding that half of the facts went unmentioned in the judge's legal conclusions. This leads Reynolds to the verdict that the case is "literally baseless."

The book also provides detailed reporting of key meetings and memos from Microsoft, Netscape, and many more top players involved in the trial or the computer software and hardware industries. Reynolds brings the reader deep into the world of legal questions surrounding computers and software, and gives deep insights into this increasingly important industry.

Richard B. McKenzie, the author of Trust on Trial, has written, "Alan Reynolds has probably done more to undermine the government's case than all of Microsoft's lawyers combined."

this book has no value at all. its suggestions for getting ahead of other people in emnergency rooms: "say you have a pain in your chest". i wasted $6.00.

1 out of 5 stars Some clever ideas... if you have the integrity for it........2004-12-31

This guy offers advice like going to the guy in the front of the line at a barber shop and giving him a sob story about how your mom just died. Another suggestion is to pick a wimp at the front of the line in a crowded amusement park and try to make him think that you're a man of God who has to get the orphans back in an hour. Would he please just let you in in front of him. Then if he doesn't oblidge, there's a reason you picked a wimp. You now threaten him with physical violence.

If those methods suit you, you'll probably like the book.

1 out of 5 stars She should have waited until tomorrow to publish.......1998-08-19

The book is pathetic. For example, Logue does not understand basic mathematics. She assumes that all delayed reinforcements are related to the inverse of a monomial. This fails to capture the few cases where one can make proper study, such as compound interest, which has exponential decay. Moreover, her model leads to an infinite value for no delay in gratification which would make the model mute. More seriously, she assumes that self control is the only way to run one's life. This book is not science, it is bad religion. She should be embarrassed.

            Book Description

An entrepreneur with attitude, Justin Herald shares his advice on making dramatic life changes and achieving goals in this inspirational business book. At the age of 25, with only $50 in his pocket and no experience in business, Herald launched Attitude Gear, which today is a worldwide, multimillion-dollar clothing company. With remarkable success in just five years, the Attitude brand now appears on T-shirts and extreme sporting gear around the world. Herald, now retired at the age of 31, credits his success to hard work, determination, and goal-oriented action. The notion of an overnight success is dispelled, as Herald's conversational tone and personal anecdotes encourage people to defy the "good things come to those who wait" mentality.

            5 out of 5 stars Ripley's Optimism Encourages Freelancers.......2002-10-19

In a wavering economy, freelance writers have managed to hold their own, and with encouragement from authors like Kimberly Ripley---it's no wonder. She defines the how's, what's, where's, and why's of freelance writing and insists that writers get on their feet and do it! When she says "Write Now!" she means business.

This is a must-read for those seeking advice for starting a freelance writing career.

            5 out of 5 stars The Writer's Best Friend!.......2002-10-14

If you're a writer -- and these days, who isn't -- there's no better "friend" to have than Kimberly Ripley! Her writing is fresh and nurturing and, in a business that's plagued by depressing statistics, doom and gloomers, and naysayers who'd rather see you fail than succeed, Mrs. Ripley's timely and professional advice is a breath of fresh air we could all do well to breathe in deep!

5 out of 5 stars If you're HIP, you gotta have this party book!!.......2002-07-04

If you're throwing a party and want it to be unique, the drinks and presentation in this book will take you there!!

There's something for everyone.....like "How Now Brown Cow" to "Buttery Pierced Nipple".

And for the COLLEGE CROWD...you really need to check out the Totally Cool College Cocktail and Shooters section......your college colors in a refreshing drink may be there. But most of all, it is actually interesting reading to imagine what the mixes will taste like and to pick up some cool bar lingo along the way.

My friends always grab the book and read it while I'm trying to mix a drink because of its fun entertainment level.
So if you want a unique, interesting Restoration Hardware/IKEA/Martha Stewart with an edge type of bar book.......this is it.

What an outrageously FUNNY and imaginative way to deliver drink recipes....I have already tried several of Miss Charming's recipes and can't wait to try them all....I also enjoyed Miss Charming's book of bar tricks and can't wait to see what comes next...you can bet I will be first in line to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Charming is at it again........2002-06-13

Yes, there are other drink recipe books out there, but not with this style. Cheryl's spin on things is unique with everything from traditional cocktails as seen in the movies to college and university mascot favorites (Go Gators!) Before reading this book I never knew about the potential of blocks of ice with shooters, what a GREAT idea! Now, we just need to have a party and put Miss Charming's words into action. Can't wait to try apple pie using Cheryl's recipe instead of grandma's.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Charming Does it Again!.......2002-05-22

Cheryl has a creative, as well as an obvious mischievous soul. First she mentally entertained us with her "Book Of Bar Amusements", and now she provides us with some liquid entertainment in order to lull us into complacency.

With such unique and individually named drinks as "Who Let The Salty Dogs Out", "Butter Me Up Scotty", and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", you know that things are going to get interesting. She breaks her drink recipes not by style, but by overall concepts involved with their names, with such categories as "Amazing Critter Cocktails" (Flying Pink Squirrel), "Famous Picture Show Cocktails" (Thunderball Rum Collins), and "Totally Cool College Cocktails And Shooters" (Husky Rooter Shooter). Even her approach to describing the recipes as well as the instructions for making (and drinking) these concoctions lets you know that Cheryl enjoys having fun with us on many different levels.

This is a deceptively simple book. It's designed to help people reflect on their own experience and use what they learn as a source of personal growth. The authors identify several self coaching opportunities or openings, and include exercises for working alone or with a coaching partner. They also provide a detailed self-assessment section plus a section on coaching "tools" like choice management and self-observation.

At one level, the book gives people simple guidance for learning from experience in ways that can help them realize their potential. But the quest can be much deeper - and with the same basic tools and techniques. Basically, this is a book that mirrors the reader. Those looking for quick and easy answers will find them. Those more interested in serious self reflection and inquiry will find rewards as deep as their curiosity and capacity can take them. I love the book - especially the questions and exercises -- and will tap its wisdom regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough research and excellent analysis.......2002-11-21

The subject of property tax exemptions for charities may not on first impression seem like the most burning issue of the day. However, the topic involves several elements that provoke the passion if not the ire of any number of people: taxes, property rights, politics, discrimination, and religion. A list of subjects not to raise at cocktail parties would not contain too many additional entries.

Legal theories notwithstanding, property taxes begin with the simple practicality that real property is impossible to hide and easy to confiscate. Regardless of the owner's asset liquidity, property taxes invoke the Willie Sutton theory of taxation: that's where the money is.

Legal theories notwithstanding, property tax exemptions have at their origin the fact that activities that we consider as charitable, schools, hospitals, welfare, etc., were the almost exclusive province of the medieval church. The church could not be taxed because the crown would risk excommunication or interdiction. In the Middle Ages, in contrast to today, going to hell was something to be feared rather than encouraged.

We learn from this that property taxes are inevitable and exemptions are eternal if not immutable. Old habits are difficult to break.

Evelyn Brody, the editor of this book, is professor of law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology and an associate scholar with the Urban Land Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. She and her contributors do a uniformly good job of placing the issues in context.

The historical perspectives were valuable, particularly a chronology showing how history and taxes interrelate. Other chapters include discussions of legal theories of taxation and exemptions, alternative methods, and the conflict between tax-exempt organizations and municipalities.

If the book has a deficiency it is that the scope constrains itself to, as the subtitle indicates, mapping the battlefield rather than preparing for battle. I should have liked to see more material on the relationship between property taxes and property use.

All in all, the book is definitely a successful example of thorough research and excellent analysis of that research. I await the sequel.

                          Book Description

Contrary to the gospel of a century of management thinkers, the primary job of the manager is no longer to plan, organize, direct, or control, asserts management expert Leonard Greenhalgh. Instead, he argues, today's successful managers are primarily negotiators who are judged on their ability to foster, coach, protect, and support collaborative relationships -- and manage conflict -- with peers, workers, bosses, suppliers, customers, regulators, competitors, and stakeholders.

In one of the most comprehensive analyses of business relationships ever written, Greenhalgh shows how relationships -- not technology or "know-how" -- are the foundation of the new extended enterprise. In immensely readable prose, he describes how companies have moved beyond adversarial relationships of command-and-control hierarchies to a new communal world in which internal networks of autonomous professionals and external networks of collaborating organizations compete against rival networks. In order to manage, managers must acquire a whole new set of negotiating skills, he argues. Traditional negotiating techniques promoted winning and self-interest, leaving a wake of bitterness and acrimony. Here Greenhalgh introduces for the first time a brilliant concept he calls "Commonwealth," which promotes ongoing relationships and the common interest. Using scores of detailed case studies and examples, he offers a set of cutting-edge tools managers can apply immediately to repair and improve relationships between people at all levels of responsibility, between groups, between organizations themselves, and between personalities involving gender differences.

Timely, stimulating, and powerful, Managing Strategic Relationships is essential reading for every manager who hopes to succeed in the organization of today.

                          Download Description

At a time when companies are becoming more global, the work force more diverse, and the focus on managing products has shifted to providing services, many twentieth-century management principles are rapidly growing obsolete. Antiquated notions of an all-powerful manager directing subordinate workers have been replaced with the preference for decentralized decision making, empowered workers, and teamwork. In Managing Strategic Relationships, Leonard Greenhalgh, Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, offers readers the key to business success in the new millennium. To succeed in this new business world, every manager must become a negotiator who is capable of understanding and managing networks of relationships both internally and externally. Based on cutting-edge theory and approach, Managing Strategic Relationships challenges the existing paradigm, and lays out the key elements for identifying which network relationships are essential for a highly successful business. It is a must-read for managers at all levels who want to succeed and better understand the organization in which they work.
