Fluffy, but not bad in principle.......1999-05-17

A cheap book and an easy read. Author makes good points about importance of charisma and clarity in personal presentation, but outside of providing generalities doesn't help:Knowing that confidence will help "unlock my potential" won't necessarily give me that confidence. Also, anecdotal evidence (the only type offered) suffers from questionable research: e.g. the charismatic leader of Virgin Airlines, *William* Branson is a model of "business likability" so remarkable that the author forgot the guy's name is actually Richard. Similarly iffy examples litter the text. On the bright side, it's food for thought, and it's easily read on a plane.

Toogood sets forth advice on how to maximize our potential, telling us that ultimately a person's own words will determine how far he or she can go. This is a book stressing effective communications, and we learn that CVA, Communications Value Added, is the author's designation for what we say and how we say it; it can determine the success of a person's business. So important is CVA that the author contends that the ability to inspire confidence makes us the best spokespersons for ourselves, whether we run a business, own one, or work in one. The author presents seven principles of CVA, which include never bore (the first eight seconds wins or loses the audience), give something extra in the speech (take a position, teach something), and be the master of your presentation (start and end with just you talking, no slides or logos). As a long time predominantly raw vegan, I am always interested in user-friendly recipes for my ultra busy life. There are two recipes in this book that I can use to impress any type of palate, including my own. The apple pie I have made repeatedly for special get togethers. At a raw gathering in Minneapolis I actually had people introducing me as the one who brought the apple pie. The candied walnuts I made as gifts for family, my mailman, my boyfriend, my co-workers and think I will do it year after year. I am being asked to make and sell them. You must try it to understand. You will need a dehydrator for the walnuts.

I have been a raw foodist for years and I have gone back and forth between many types of eating. This book is perfect for all eating forms. It is health, simple, creative, and extremely tasty. I have eaten at many raw food restaurants and tasted many recipes, they work with the natural elements and it can be difficult to make dishes satifying enough to consider a meal.

BORING!.......2004-07-14

Having read literally DOZENS of great raw foods books, (as a raw foods nutrition specialist, I have to know this subject, backwards and forwards,) I must say, I was underwhelmed. This book just simply is NOT a raw foods primer, as the title states, but the "artist's" self-promotion.

A primer would teach basic raw foods techniques. You'd be better off with Steve Meyerowitz' Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook. At least you'd learn how to sprout, how to juice, how to dehydrate, etc. This book assumes you already know that.

A primer would teach basic recipes. You'd be better off with Rhio's Hooked on Raw. At least you'd have dozens upon dozens of simple, basic recipes you could go home and fix up for dinner TONIGHT.

All this book is, is several pages the "artist's" ART work, and a few pages of boring, overly-complicated froo-froo cuisine.

This is NOT a primer. It's showing off.

In the world of open source there is a plethora of books on installing and administering Linux. There are also many technical books available on setting up a web server or other specific areas of Linux. This book fills a very broad gap for the non-technical person who wants to know about open source products and how they can be beneficial to your needs. This is not a technical manual but a guide that gives a higher-level view of what the software can do and how to use it.

It includes information on obtaining and installing Mandrake Linux (but no troubleshooting if you have a problem), setting up an office network, setting up an email server, setting up a web server, customer relationship management, calendar and schedule management, document management, accounting, project management, security, and just about everything you need to know to setup and run your business on an open source solution.

Perhaps the best way to provide an indication of this book's perspective is to look at a specific chapter. One of the best ones for this purpose is the one on setting up a web server. The first thing addressed is why you need a web server in the first place. This is followed by an examination of the most common open source web server - Apache. It then provides enough information to understand some of the basics of configuration. This allows you to understand what the configuration files do and get a server up and running, but not enough information to actually configure a secure server.

So, what makes this book so unique that I would recommend it to anyone? It meets the needs of the manager in that it is general enough that someone who has no knowledge of Linux can understand what is going on and what to expect of an installation. Yet it also meets the needs of the technical Linux user who understands the details of all the configuration files but often does not have an overall view of what the complete system is supposed to do. For example, it gives a short conceptual view of Perl that is sufficient to let the reader know if it is something that they could use but provides no information on how to program it. Then again, there are many, many books on Perl programming available.

"Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems" is a very highly recommended book for anyone who is looking at the open source market and particularly anyone considering Linux as an operating system of choice either on the desktop or as a server. This is easily one of the best Linux books of the year; providing a management level view of the Linux world without the technical focus of other books.

I just finished a rather interesting and different book on Open Source Software. The title is Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems by John Locke (Charles River Media). The author contacted me and asked if I'd like to review the book, and I accepted. Since this is an area which is grabbing more of my interest these days, it was helpful in many ways...

First, the chapter layout:

When I first started reading it, I was expecting something non-technical in nature, something that would be targeted for the average business owner that knows s/he wants to spend less on software and is looking for alternatives. And to be sure, the book does deliver to that group. But there are also chapters (or areas within each chapter) where the content gets pretty technical. For instance, the detail on how to set up a web server isn't for the person who simply wants to turn on their computer and go. These areas are going to appeal to the in-house technical support person who's been charged with making it all work. While you could (and probably should) find whole books on many of these topics, there's enough detail to get you started in the right direction.

I think Part 2 is extremely valuable, in that it helps both the business owner and the techie figure out what's available in terms of open source alternatives to the typical business software. You learn about OpenOffice.org as a replacement to Microsoft's Office. You learn about MySQL as an alternative to Microsoft Access or many other more expensive relational database systems. You'd be able to find all this out if you dug around on the web long enough, but the author packages up the information in a single location and helps you start to understand what's available for you.

There's also a CD in the back of the book that contains many of the open source packages discussed in the book. Being that these packages move pretty quickly as far as release cycles go, I think I'd prefer visit the web site for the specific package and download the latest. Still, if you're wanting something quick, you'll have it on the CD.

At first, the mix of technical and non-technical content in each chapter didn't quite set right. I wanted the book to target one or the other. But the longer I read, the more I liked the fact that the book could serve as a single volume to allow both the tech and non-tech sides of a business to come together on common ground. The non-techies can ignore the parts that are over their heads, but still understand the possibilities. The techies will understand where the business is coming from, and will get a good start on implementing the software. As a result, I give this book high marks for anyone wanting to some or all of their business computing to an open source model.

What I liked about the book is that it's easy to read, filled with information, goes to the point in concicely and simply answering 20 questions on Self-Directed Work Teams (SDWT's if you prefer). The 20 questions are answered.. but what I also liked.. in that each chapter ends with "Questions FOR YOU" -- so the book becomes really hands on.

If you would like a "preview" of the questions... they cover everything going from what Self-Directed Work teams are (naturally...) to keys for success, benefits for the organisation AND for the team members, the roles of team members, managers and supervisors in the Work team, how to get started and I could go on. Actually, the Business Book Quality Digest called it "the best quick introduction to self-directed teams" -- it may very well be!

I have read this twice now, and its power has not diminished. I give it four, not five, stars only because the writing does not quite match that power. The title comes from the fact that the reward in German occupied Poland for turning in a Jew was just that - 100 cigarettes and a bottle of vodka. Absolutely marvelous memoir of a young teenage boy who managed to survive, all on his own, by smarts, courage and sometimes, sheer luck. His music saved him more than once, and I was astonished, that once he reached Canada, he did not continue in that vein. The kindness of strangers, and the fact that he was blond, helped him many times. And the facts he learned about cows are amusing and interesting. They are not so dumb as we think, it seems.

I'm not a reader, and I was working one day and started reading this book. If it's not a good book, I'll put it down and never pick it up again. That wasn't the case with this book. I couldn't put it down and finised reading it within 2 days. WWII and the Holocaust have always interested me, and this book really made me understand more about it and what times were like for the Jews having to endure that horrible time. I strongly recommend this book to anyone.

I read this book the summer i was fourteen. I had just begin to become interested in the Holocaust and WWII. Well, it's a year later, and I still vividly remember how interesting this book was. This is an incredible memoir. I won't spoil it or say too much, but Schaller tells us of the events of his young life as a Jew in Warsaw when the war broke out. I found myself marveling at the fact that when the story begins, he is around my age, and how courageous he is stunned me. This book really set off my fascination for what happened to those 6+ million during that dark time for humanity. Well, it's a great book, just see for yourself.
