5 out of 5 stars The One I Always Pull Down from the Shelf.......2003-11-29

This cookbook demostrates that combining good ingredients with simplicity can result in wonderful dishes. I have an extensive cookbook collection, some are beautiful to look at and some are a great resource for recipes; this is both a joy to browse and a pleasure to cook from. The instructions are clear, the lists of ingredients and number of steps are reasonable, and the results have always been very rewarding. As an indication of how highly I think of this book, I purchased copies for both my mother and daughter. This is a great book to have in your kitchen library.

5 out of 5 stars I went from Novice to Gourmet!.......2003-02-19

I have collected some very interesting and promising cookbooks over the years, and all of them combined could not teach me what this one book has. I literally went from Novice to Gourmet when I started making some of these recipes. I rave about it and give it to everyone on my gift list.
You can make any of the recipes everyday and not feel overwhelmed because they are truly simple! My favorite is the Lamb Shanks with Rosemary and Leeks served with mashed potatoes. Although it takes 2 hours to make, your actual work time is less than 20 minutes. Just leave it to simmer and check on it every half hour, and Viola you are a gourmet chef!
I have such confidence in the kitchen because of this book! I hope, if you decide to purchase this book or put it on your wish list, that it will give you half the joy it has given me because even that would be heaven sent!

Praised for a thoughtful reassessment of Frederick the Great in his previous book, Giles MacDonogh tackles another controversial figure in German history, Kaiser Wilhelm II. William (as his British biographer calls him throughout) has often been dismissed as an anti-Semite and a reactionary whose policies, particularly the buildup of the German navy, inevitably led to World War I. MacDonogh's readable and thorough synthesis of current scholarship depicts a more complex man with far more in common with his English mother, Queen Victoria's daughter Vicky, than is usually acknowledged. "He had inherited her memory, her lack of snobbery, openness, vivacity, moodiness, over-estimation of her own importance, her cleverness without wisdom," writes MacDonogh, characteristically listing both good and bad traits without moralizing. William's mixed feelings about his mother indelibly shaped his attitude toward Great Britain: he strove from the moment he became emperor in 1888 for an alliance with England, yet seemed compelled to undermine it due to "a combination of admiration and envy, animosity and affection." Born in 1859, his botched delivery resulted in a withered left arm, the first in a lifelong series of painful physical and mental ailments that may well have been responsible for the intemperate outbursts that have damaged his posthumous reputation. MacDonogh reminds us that William's worst threats--to tear up the German constitution, to have his enemies shot--were never carried out. After Germany's defeat in 1918, he abdicated and retired to a manor house in Holland; he may have disliked Jews, but he viewed the Nazis with distaste and until his death in 1941 gave no indication he supported the Third Reich. MacDonogh's detailed account of William's life and times doesn't so much revise the conventional portrait as add nuance, and it will be welcomed by aficionados of old-fashioned narrative biography. --Wendy Smith

                    Book Description

Wilhelm II, Prussia's last king and Germany's last Kaiser, was born in Potsdam on January 27, 1859, the son of Prince Frederick of Prussia and Princess Vicky, Queen Victoria's eldest child. Al-though he is widely perceived as a warmonger who seemed to delight in victory, bloodshed, and the belligerent aims of his staff, he carved out an image for himself as the 'Emperor of Peace.' Historically, he has been blamed for World War I, although he made real efforts to prevent it. He has been branded an anti-Semite, yet the Nazis wrote him off as a 'Jew-lover.' In this fascinating, authoritative new profile, MacDonogh takes a fresh look at this complex and contradictory statesman and the charges against him.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good -- he has many characteristics of G W Bush.......2007-09-24

Lots of detail that gives a view of how at times the Kaizer was very fit for the job and at other times extremely unfit. But when things comes down for a final decision he did what he was told by who ever was his 'Cheney' counterpart of the time or based it on his religious convictions like Bush. Other parallels with Bush: lazy student; not a deep thinker; not pragmatic; not a hard worker. However, more intellegent than Bush. The bottom line: don't have a leader that did not work day and night their whole life to accel and most of their life working become a leader of a country -- they won't do it well and will not give their position the effort it is due. The cause of WWI was that things got too complicated much too fast for lazy and very limited leaders. The cause of the Iraq war was things were simple for an even simpler President too lazy the think things through.

I enjoyed reading this book. There were a few times I lost track of who was who doing what to what and when and where, but for the most part I felt I understand better the role and personality of a complex and contradictory charactor in history.

In regard to the Kaiser, the quote by Daisy Pless in this book may say it best. "Poor man, he means so awfully well, and everything he does is intended for the best, and still he is completly destitute of tact that everything turns out exactly opposite to what he intends."

Still, little comfort to the millions who died in the "War to End All Wars."

I picked up this book on recommendation from my dad, a history buff much like myself, and was extremely disappointed in it. Instead of dealing properly with the Kaiser himself it spent the vast majority of the time discussing and analyzing German politics and political figures active during the Kaiser's reign and made only the most fleeting references to the personal life of the Kaiser (or anything to do with him personally, for that matter). It's as if the author was too afraid to delve into the private life of this controversial figure because he knew that the bright picture he put forth of the Kaiser would be blown to pieces. Needless to say, this book should be entitled "Politics and Political Figures During the Reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II."
Go to another book if you are looking for a true biography of Wilhelm. This one will only disappoint.

The most recent English language biographical study of Wilhelm is The Last Kaiser: The Life of Wilhelm II by Giles MacDonogh (2001). MacDonogh seems to have set out deterministically to write something other than an "indictment" of Wilhelm. He asserts that historians have been unduly critical against the emperor for eighty years, which has prompted him to examine Wilhelm "in a light which, if not ridiculously positive, [is] at least a little more indulgent than that which as coloured attitudes in the past." (viii) While MacDonogh's study is not "ridiculously positive," it does tend to minimize Wilhelm's culpability for the various blunders historians commonly associate with his reign. While he concurs with other scholars of Wilhelmine Germany that the emperor was "a mass of contradictions," (1) MacDonogh also minimizes the Kaiser's documented anti-Semitism, and strongly implies that the "cases brought up against the emperor" such as the Kruger telegram (1896), the "Hun Speech" of 1900, and the Daily Telegraph Affair (1908), were handled "reasonable, and in some cases well" by the Kaiser. (7) This attempt to show that Wilhelm did not act maliciously, criminally or incompetently is what differentiates The Last Kaiser from its predecessors.
In MacDonogh's account of Wilhelm's wartime role, he reaches a familiar conclusion: "it would be impossible to make out that he played the role of `Supreme Warlord' between 1914 and 1918." (3) He shows that Wilhelm "wavered over the preventive strike" long advocated by the General Staff, and "each time he looked in to the abyss he drew back in horror and countermanded" his generals' orders for such an attack. (9) This gives the kaiser too much of a benevolent, conscientious role for the time. MacDonogh portrays a Kaiser swept up with the emotions and events of August 1914, a leader who allowed himself to be carried into the war. By the first weeks of the conflict, "he had become increasingly peripheral." (367) This declension culminated in January 1917 with Bethmann Hollweg's removal at the insistence of Hindenburg and Ludendorff, at which point Wilhelm "was no more than a shadow emperor. No one listened to him." (391) Probably true.....
Despite showing far more sympathy toward his subject than other biographers of Wilhelm II have done, MacDonogh echoes many of their conclusions. "It is perhaps right that we condemn William," he suggests, "for if the First World War was not his undertaking, the finger of blames points over and over again to the failure of German diplomacy in which he tried so hard to play a positive role." (460) MacDonogh seems reluctant to assign Wilhelm much direct blame for the origins of the Great War or how it was conducted. On the contrary, most students of the last Hohenzollern ruler of Germany concur with the concise biographical entry in The Oxford Companion to Military History (2001): Kaiser Wilhelm II was "seduced by...nationalism and militarism," and came to discover that "leading a cavalry charge on maneuvers...is not the same thing as presiding over a beleaguered state engaged in total war." The last German Kaiser "lacked the strength of character and consistency of purpose which his role demanded, and if he cannot be blamed for leading Germany into war, he may be more justly censured for what one historian has called `a childlike flight from reality' in the crisis of 1914."

The book is good because it examines one of the figures who was instrumental in shapping the 20th century. The author proves that he was very erratic with his forighn policy and his views on the world. The author also disproves the misconception that it was his imperial ambitions that led to the first World War and points out that it was the militarism of prussian aristocrats.

This sensitive, restrained memoir searches for answers to the most painful of questions: Why would a bright, athletic, seemingly well-adjusted boy like Kathleen Finneran's 15-year-old brother want to take his own life? Sean Finneran's 1971 suicide is the pivotal crisis in The Tender Land, but not the only one. References to a family strain of depressive mental illness sound a warning note; Finneran's maternal grandfather probably killed himself, and her mother is subject to severe bouts of depression that may also have afflicted Sean, whose suicide note reveals a self-hatred that the love of his parents and siblings could not assuage. The author frankly relates her own problems with weight, an inexplicable but irresistible urge to shoplift, and uncertain sexual orientation. But Finneran's precise prose, rich in evocative physical details, convincingly limns an ordinary, generally happy Midwestern family: five children spread over 16 years; a devout, nature- and animal-loving mother; a father who communicated best without words, rooted in "his faith in materials men make of the earth." There are no villains and no answers in this heartbreaking book, which respects the essential mystery of a shattering tragedy and closes with an affirmative message to Sean: "I want to call out your name and tell you, across the tender land, that we have gone on living." --Wendy Smith

                                Book Description

"The Tender Land" is a love story unlike any other. In her remarkable debut, Kathleen Finneran renders powerfully the emotional, spiritual, and physical terrain of family relationships--their closeness and disconnection, their intimacy and estrangement, and their ultimate resilience. The Finnerans--parents and five children--are a seemingly ordinary family until their lives are forever altered by the death of the author's younger brother. His suicide at fifteen serves as a focal point for Finneran's spare and elegant portrait of her family, its sorrows and its joys. "With subtlety and grace and a heartbraking compassion for the truth" (Book), Finneran pays tribute to the enduring love between parents and children, brothers and sisters.

5 out of 5 stars It will move you........2005-08-18

This book reveals the emotional upheaval that only a suicide survivor can put into words. Ms. Finnerman's story of the suicide death of her brother was unfortunalty a subject I can relate to. It is a well told and sensitive book which shines a light on the topic of losing a sibling in such a tragic manner.

                                5 out of 5 stars Extremely Moving.......2005-05-18

I recently read The Tender Land and loved it. I admit that I was somewhat hesitant to read it because of the suicide subject matter. But it turns out to be more of a book of how a family copes with sudden death and the grief that follows. I think anyone could relate to this story. Ms. Finneran is a descriptive author that brings the reader into the story to experience it yourself. I will be looking for more of this author's work.

                                5 out of 5 stars Truly unforgettable.......2003-11-16

This memoir is one that I will never forget - it affected me in the way that The Lovely Bones did - it's left me with a profound feeling of heartbreak and poignancy.

Kathleen Finneran is probably one of the bravest of authors as she lays bare many personal feelings and experiences of her own, along with the family tragedy that the Finnerans lived through when they lost 15-year-old Sean to suicide.

She portrays her family, separately and wholly, as tight-knit, strong, extremely loving, but tragically touched by depression and suicide.

I highly recommend this beautifully written, heartrending, precious memoir. It is one-of-a-kind.

                                5 out of 5 stars Lovingly Revealing.......2003-11-12

Kathleen Finneran's debut novel, "The Tender Land" is unforgettable in its restraint and quiet beauty. Finneran's words lovingly reveal her family's tragic history and her own painful coming of age. She deals with her 15-year-old brother Sean's suicide by sharing this memoir with others as a love letter to him.

"I realized I needed to write about my brother's death in a way that was more intentional than tangential. I started out in the form I was comfortable with, writing an autographical essay that was submerged in more objective prose, in this case an essay that explored my mother's real belief that my brother was an angel by comparing his qualities to those angels that exist in literature - Thomas Aquinas on angels, Dante Milton," explained Finneran. "The end result was something that seemed very artificial, and I felt my brother deserved better from me. So I just started writing what I wanted to remember about him, free from any form or genre constraints; in doing that, in taking the simplest and mot direct approach, I learned to write about his death, I had to write about his life, and to write about his life, I had to write about my whole family."

Finneran was born in 1957 into an Irish Catholic family. She and her four siblings, an older brother and sister, Michael and Mary, and a younger brother and sister, Sean and Kelly, had a comfortable life in suburban St. Louis. Depression and suicide ran in the family. Kathleen suffered from depression and her sister, Kelly, tried to overdose at age 28.

Finneran's first sexual experience coincided with the night Sean died, making sex and death forever inextricable for her. She slept with a man. "How could I tell Mary what that weekend was for me, making love to a woman the next."

She later found comfort with a woman lover, Ellis, who was her best friend, despite her mother's cautious warning about being "different." "'There's something about Ellis,' Sean had said once. 'When you are with her, you always feel safe.' And it was true. She lived simply, straightforwardly, as if life required nothing more than mastering a series of survival skills. And she had mastered them. I marveled at the shallowness of her breath as she slept, her blond hair falling across her face, her body's no bigger than Sean's. Her arms were stretched out above me as if she were trying to shield me from something, as if I were a child whose body was precious and small and in need of her protection."

Throughout "The Tender Land," I wondered why Sean had committed suicide. Finneran eventually divulged the reason.

"...On the day he died, Florrisant Junior High was winning by a large margin. With little time left on the clock, the coach felt it safe to send in the second string. In those final few minutes, Sean made his first shot of the season..."

"That night at home he didn't mention it. At dinner, he never said a word about the game. After he finished doing the dishes, he went upstairs, made a timid attempt at slitting his wrists, then opted to swallow a fistful of the pills that keep my father's heart beating at a regular rhythm. 'I hate basketball and am no good at it,' he wrote in a letter he left. In the few minutes that he had been sent into play, he had taken the ball down the court the wrong way. The shot he made was to the other team's basket."

I understood Sean's frustration. I was in my freshman year as Sean, and the gymnasium was filled with people yelling, "Shoot it!" I made a basket for the other team. I broke out laughing. My team won the game.

"They (Finneran's parents) don't understand why I would want the world to know some of the things I've written about myself (in "The Tender Land). Well, it's not that I want the world to know things about me that most people would consider private. It's not that at all. In many ways, I would have preferred not to have revealed myself to the extent I felt necessary. But the book revolves around my bother Sean's suicide, and however many reasons or causes can be attributed to someone's suicide, I think, in the end, people kill themselves because they despise themselves deeply, even if for only a moment. They can't continue on in the world being who they are; they can't fathom ever being different from how they are in that moment, and they can't conceive of there being anyone else in the world who is like them," said Finneran.

I sympathized with Finneran throughout the book because my cousin, who is a year older than I, committed suicide two months before I moved to Seattle. I understood how Finneran felt; however, it wasn't my kid brother, who is alive and well and living in Indiana.

Finneran's "The Tender Land" has been written, as a personal essay extended at length yet has remained a quality piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Tribute to Finneran.......2002-08-16

This is the most gorgeous book I've read in a decade, seriously. I am a writer and I have taught college-level creative writing and literature for the past thirteen years. While researching a reading list for my class in reading and writing the memoir, it was my good fortune, and that of my students, to happen upon Finneran's book. I used the book that semester, and am using it again this fall for the same class. Aside from being a literary gem, the book provides rich opportunities to teach about writing well. It's lovely, poetic, searingly candid, exquisitely scenic. Every single character is painted in full detail, adding up to the portrait of a family who has lost something big.

I highly recommend this book. If this world had half a brain, it would be on the bestseller list.

                                  Book Description

Game theory has come to dominate industrial organization economics, but business strategists continue to debate its usefulness. So far, empirical work on the application of game theory to business strategy has been too limited to force a consensus. As a (partial) remedy, Games Businesses Play uses detailed case studies of competitive interaction to explore the uses and limits of game theory as a tool for business strategists.

Because they are analytical rather than descriptive, the case studies are not typical teaching cases. The cases are paired with customized game-theoretic models that cover a wide range of commitment decisions, from short-run commitments such as price to longer-run commitments such as capacity expansion and reduction, product and process innovation, and battles for market share. A variety of quantitative and qualitative techniques are used to test the models' predictions on case data. In addition the book sheds light on a number of other issues important to strategic management, including the resource-based view of the firm and the emergent theory of dynamic capabilities.

Writing in a intuitive and straightforward way is not one of mr Ghemawats talents, at least judging from this book. His intention when writing this book seems to have been to encourage fellow academics to use the case study method to explore the usefulness of game theory and bring it closer to practitioners.

My backgound is that I have roughly 50 academic credits in economics (mostly financial) and I have read some introductory level game theory texts, and I was at a loss when looking at the game theoretic models that Ghemawat uses. I understood most of the analytics though and there is some pretty interesting material covered in this book. But I don't think the general reader of strategy literature will get that much out of it.

If you have a strong background in micro economic theory/game theory and like seeing it applied on business, you'll probably get a huge kick out of reading this book. Ghemawhat is very careful to report how the models are set up and adapted to the situation. Great stuff if you happen to like that sort of thing.

Before reading it, I had a huge over-belief in what game theory could accomplish, but after reading this book I have a much more realistic view of its limitations (in applied business strategy at least).

Pankaj Ghemawat applies the Harvard Business School concept of case studies to game theory. Ghemawat's intent is to demonstrate that game theory is applicable to business strategy. Overall Gemawat makes a strong case for the practical aplication of game theory to business strategies. The book is useful for teaching graduates and undegraduate students a practical use of game theory. The writing style is somewhat clunky but rereading each case 3 or 4 times is worth the effort. The calculus and statistics is somewhat complex for a non-specialist , however the basic ideas are presented clearly. Overall this is a challenging book that presents game theory in a more sophisticated manner than found in the customary introductory books that rely on the cook book recipe presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Applied game theory for managers and economists.......1997-11-17

The author applies his breadth of practical and academic experience (ex-McKinsey consultant and Harvard Business School Professor) to create a range of practical case studies in applied game theory. There's a good balance here - the economists will like the theoretical rigor but it's still accessible to the general reader. Useful either as an introduction to game theory for managers, or a source of case examples for the more advanced student.
