Not helpful for contractors.......2001-02-27

While this book should be read by every HR person and every supervisor or manager ever hiring a temp or contractor, it is a superficial overview of the contingency staffing industry. As a technical contractor, I was hoping to obtain a better understanding of the ins and outs of the industry to improve the types of contact assignments I obtain. This book doesn't provide that insight.

Highly recommeded for anyone who uses temporary staff........1999-04-29

As a production manager for a medium-sized electronics manaufacturing firm, I am continually challenged with getting better performance from our temporary staffing services. We have struggled with what we have considered lack-luster service and with a fairly high attrition rate. Our selection of services was based upon competive bid, but we did not select the cheapest.

After reading Temporary Sanity, I realize that many of our problems have stemmed from lack of internal coordination as well as a poor communication plan with our staffing provider, both of which are stressed in the book.

Although I have used temporary agencies for over 15 years, I found much of the authors inside information as to the real workings of staffing services to be very insightful, particularly now, when low unemployment rates mean skilled temporary employees can have their pick of the jobs available.

The books continual focus on the importance of treating temporary staff with respect equal to our permanent employees really hit home and, after several meeting with my supervisors and our human resources manager we have developed a plan to involve both the temporary agency staff, and the temps themselves, in our long and short range production goals by truly soliciting their input. After my supervisors read the book, we instituted a quality bonus program for our temporary employees, a temp-of-the-month award, and recruiting bonuses for any new temps which they refer to work for us. Our human resource department is working on written guidelines for all of our temporary employees as well as written job discriptions for all temporary positions. We have also,followed the authors advice about having a liason person from the temporary service meet with us weekly and in person to discuss present and future staffing needs and any individual performance issues. This one step has helped our communication greatly.

This is just a begining, but already we have seen improved moral and attrition, I'm confident I'll see improved production numbers this quarter.

There is enough solid information in Temporary Sanity that I would recommend it for any one who uses temporary staff, whether or not they are having problems. There are time and money saving tips throughout, funny real-life illustrations and anecdotes based on their many years of experience. The chapter on legal considerations may be an eye-opener for many reader...well worth the 14.95 price.

"Oh Aye, I et a bap! The other OTHER white bread It's hwats fer dinner! Get in mah belly! Ahm higher on the food chain than you!"

Even if you aren't Fat B***std from Austin Powers sequel film, you'll appreciate good Scottish baking. And unlike Fat B***std, this book does not weigh a metric ton or have unusual eating habits (like Haggis.) It's TINY! But it has everything you need to make the most popular Scottish treats. These little cookbooks are amazing in how they pack in the most essential recipes from around the world, yet fit nicely in an overhead shelf in the smallest galley kitchen. I especially like the Oatcakes, which are easy to make and taste marvelous with butter and honey. (Heather honey if you can get it.) But be careful, if you overindulge in these recipes, and boy can the Scots bake or what, you may end up looking like a certain villain from a Mike Meyers film.

Really useful book........2002-02-27

Great tips, for sewing machine and serger, for a reality-based sewer. (So many books are for people whose lives seem to consist of nothing but sewing, not for the rest of us.) When she says she has tips to speed things up, she just doesn't mean fast - she means fast and thorough. So it's not only fast, it's better. The only problem I had was sometimes the illustrations should have been numbered to coordinate with directions and weren't, or else there were steps not illustrated (though well described) so I was sewing "by faith in the word" of the directions and it turned out right. It is well illustrated and there is always something to learn and try on almost every page.

I've been sewing for 40 years. I read this manual like a novel. It was so helpful to me to becoming more organized. I teach young girls to sew, and teaching the organization methods by Nancy has helped them see how much easier it is to sew when you have everything you need in one place. NO more looking for the missing buttons, zippers, etc. Nancy is such a talented individual and I'm grateful for her expertise. Anyone who buys this book will benefit from it. Enjoy!

I've been sewing since I was 15. I've taught others how to sew. This is a good common sense book and I think it is helpful for all skill levels. After turning a few pages, I'm wanting to sew!

This an exciting book, and one which will make sewing possible in your busy life. Included are new techniques for sewing better as well as faster. The instruction sheet that came with your pattern doesn't have the best plan for sewing your next garment -- this book does! Very useful

Aung San Suu Kyi's first-ever biography bends over backward in the name of "balance." Like almost all visitors to this embattled country, Pulitzer-nominated journalist Barbara Victor entered Burma (now called Myanmar) under the auspices of its government, a brutal dictatorship that regularly jails and tortures its dissidents. The situation presents certain intrinsic dilemmas, considering that Victor was never able to interview the subject of her book, the most famous dissident of all: Aung San Suu Kyi, the beloved "Lady" of Burma's democracy movement. Nonetheless, Victor provides an excellent overview of Aung San Suu Kyi's career and achievements, in particular her turbulent early life. Her account makes clear the strong influence of Aung San Suu Kyi's father, a revered military hero who was assassinated in 1947 in the struggle for Burmese independence when she was only two years old. Especially in contrast to Aung San Suu Kyi's almost saintly self-sacrifice, the Burmese junta (cursed with the movie-villain acronym SLORC) tends to come off as almost cartoonishly evil. Victor's access to top-level Burmese generals precludes such simplistic analysis, but what's fascinating is how the regime consistently betrays itself, exposing its own corruption and moral decay even as it twists the truth to serve its own ends.

This paper presents an approach for the integrated consideration of both technical and valuation uncertainties during decision making supported by environmental performance information based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Key elements of this approach include ''distinguishability analysis'' to determine whether the uncertainty in the performance information is likely to make it impossible to distinguish between the activities under consideration, and the use of a multivariate statistical analysis approach, called principal components analysis (PCA), which facilitates the rapid analysis of large numbers of parallel sets of results, and enables the identification of choices that lead to similar and/or opposite evaluations of activities. The integrated approach for the management of uncertainty is demonstrated for a technology selection decision for the recommissioning of a coal-based power station. The results of the case study decision suggest that stakeholder involvement in preference modelling is important, and that the ''encoding'' of value judgements and preferences into LCA environmental performance information is to be avoided. The approach presented in this paper provides a foundation for the consideration of the implications of diversity in values and preferences as part of an overall approach to promote effective decision making based on LCA environmental performance information. However, the approach is more universally applicable - it can be used wherever multiple criteria decision analysis is used to assist in the resolution of complex decision situations.

From the author: Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and related techniques provide more data faster and more often than was possible in the past. Also, high-quality manufacturing requires methods capable of detecting process changes even when the process is producing in the defects per million range. Past research has shown that the best method for analyzing binary data for most situations was the CUSUM procedure. Today's manufacturing environment requires even faster, more accurate detection of process changes than the CUSUM offers. This paper describes a study in developing a system based on using multiple statistical tests together to attain the extra speed and accuracy needed. The results of the research show that the system performs very well when measured against the baseline method: a CUSUM procedure with an [h.sub.t] value of 4.2. The system outperformed the baseline handily in speed of detection. At some points, the system would have correctly classified the equivalent of over 10% of the total received signals before the baseline. For processes measured in defects per million, the actual time differential would be even more pronounced. In addition, the system performed at least as well in accuracy, providing a composite performance over the test scenarios of 95.02% compared with 94.57% for the baseline.
