This book focuses on mental health in the corporate word. More specifically, it address the fact that working life has become a nightmarish experience for the majority in salaried employment, mainly because of a radical paradigm shift that has taken place in our times.

It begins by giving an excellent commentary and an in-depth analysis of what this paradigm shift is all about. In effect, moving from the machine-age world-view to the e-world view that prevails today has changed just about everything: the prevailing mind-set, the way work is organized, how people need to be treated, career path planning, even the type of education systems which are considered appropriate.

Those who are caught in "transition sickness" (my term not the author's) typical of our times will find this enhanced comprehension of what they are actually going through extremely advantageous. Greater insight will generate greater adjustment and thus higher levels of mental health.

The author recommends that we become convinced of one truth, viz. that it is the world that seems to have gone "crazy", not us! This would be a welcome insight which will bring much relief to those who are struggling so much in a confusing world just to keep afloat. With such a conviction in place, we are empowered to work on the strategies she recommends. These include becoming extremely clear about the meaning and purpose of our own lives - what she defines as "spirituality". With such clarity we will be able to steer our own career paths and our lives in according to what has meaning for us.

She also emphasizes the need for enhanced personal development particularly in the area of self-nurture to sustain our own vitality and the ability to respond creatively to a changing world rather than to succumb to it. This includes: being in touch with our inner truths and striving to go after our own desires and preferences, ensuring our physical health, taking care of our emotional well-being by taking time and energy to cultivate strong bonds of relationships with family and friends, replacing disempowering belief systems with positive thinking, as well as acquiring wisdom as opposed to knowledge. Such wisdom includes learning that "The big people are those who give"!

This book is certainly recommended reading for all those who want to live creatively in this brave new world rather than merely cope or survive. The author writes from her personal experience of the present reality and thus her book has the power to inspire and transform. It did have such an impact on me personally.

I commend the author for giving us an insightful treatment of today's working world which manages to be analytical and intellectual yet touchingly human and thus credible. Read it if you want to soar to new heights of personal achievement and happiness even in such a crazy world as ours today.

Not the most useful, but comprehensive........2007-09-09

This book by Anthony Boardman et al. is a heavy read. It is not a book you would want to read from A to Z in order to understand Cost-Benefit Analysis or CBA, but it is one of the better reference books I have found. The only downside I found was a very theoretical approach and lack of really useful examples. Nevertheless, not one element of CBA seems to be left untouched. This book is a valuable reference to anyone relying on CBA as a decision-making tool, because it will assist you in understanding what it is that you are analyzing when applying CBA.

I had to buy this book for a class I took on Cost-benefit analysis (which is probably why you're thinking of buying it, too). The contents of my review won't have much influence on your choice to purchase it, as that decision has already been made by your prof. But I think I owe you a few warnings.

Some of the chapters are well-written (the chapters on discounting and compounding and time value), but most of them are confusing (the chapters on option value and the section about the optimal growth discount model). Even our professor, who has a BA in econ from Yale and a PhD in econ from Berkeley, had trouble getting through these sections. Some of the homework problems at the ends of the chapters ask about material that the text never fully explains. In a few instances, the book reminds you why you hate integral calculus.

So although I can't stop you from buying this, I can at least warn you that your trip through its pages will be nothing like a trip through the beautiful mountains on the cover. Unless you were planning on climbing the mountains. In January. Without GPS or crampons.

The authors have put approached this topic in a step by step way. It explains important background topics as well. I bought this book for a class, so I really didn't have much choice in the matter. I expect that most buyers will do so for the same reason. To them, I say "don't worry about it," this won't hurt as much as you think." If you are considering this for pleasure reading, well, don't let me stop you.

Probably one of the few only books available that talks about CBA. Lacks in real life examples, otherwise a good read for grasping basic concepts and tools.

Excellent starter book.......2007-05-10

If you are just starting out in the craft, this is an excellent book to start with. The book illustrates and gives step by steps on a wide range of woodcarving techniques. These include relief, 3-dimensional, and pierced carving. Each project includes the recommended dimensions, wood type, and a list of the tools needed to complete them. There are also small sections describing tools, carving techniques, and methods for transferring patterns. These do not go into great detail, but enough to give you the general idea.

Just a note on woodworking books in general - Once general technique for carving is covered, there is little else that can be taught by text. One has to actually carve the wood ;) No book will do that for you.

The projects in the book are easy to do and the results are very impressive. This book covers some basic techniques and provides patterns for these projects. Each are illustrated with color photographs and step-by-step descriptions. If you are looking for an in-depth discussion on wood, tools, and sharpening techniques, this isn't for you. If you are looking for some easy projects to start off with, buy the book!!

A nice history until 2001.......2007-07-23

I am a new fan of NASCAR so I really wasn't too familiar with it's history. Well, this book chaznged all that! This book covers NASCAR from it's beginnings in moonshine runners of the 40's up through Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001. This is just a great book. The author really brings the characters and personalities of Big Bill fRANCE AND ALL THE DRIVERS TO LIFE. I came away really understanding the sport's origins and history, and it only deepened my love for NASCAR. This is a MUST READ for any fan curious of how the sport has developed over the years. The book is written in a style that is very relaxed and down home, certainly not pompous and pretentious. This book was so well written I felt as though I were right there at all the races, right up close. I will read this book again for sure. GET THIS BOOK, you won't regret it!

The book was a pleasant and entertaining read. Many of the stories have been told and retold many times including the tragic death of Fireball Roberts in, of all places, a fiery crash.

The book tells the behind the scenes politics and vision of Bill France Sr. that made NASCAR a multi-billion dollar booming business. NASCAR did not begin in 1994 when they first went to race at Indy even though ABC television would have you believe that. It did not begin in 2001 when Fox got the coverage of the entire year and watched Dale Earnhardt die on the final lap (this is basically where the book ends). It did not even begin when Daytona was originally run in 1959.

NASCAR began as basic "Dukes of Hazzard" style moonshine running. The history portrayed in the book is accurate but a bit shallow. It also fails on another point: I would like to have seen a more in-depth treatment of the 1992-1993 Winston Cup points race and twin tragedies that deprived us of Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. The book is a good overview but lacks depth in some areas - and this one is the most telling.

All in all, it was a good book. But you CAN get more information from the Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia as well as Golenbock's book.

I'm a new NASCAR fan. I happened to buy this book at full bookstore price. I also bought a used version of Peter Golenbock's "American Zoom". I read Joe Menzer's book first. Loved it. Then I read Golenbock's 1993 book and read many of the same stories, almost word-for-word, about NASCAR.

Accessible & Entertaining.......2002-02-17

I'd have to agree with points made by both of the previous reviewers. Joe Menzer has done new interviews, and some of the sources he's chosen offer fresh insights, particularly Max Muhleman's thoughts. It's also a very concise, reader-friendly encapsulation of the sport's history and recent developments. So, if someone were looking for an accessible, entertaining introduction to NASCAR, especially its early history, I'd recommend the book.

However, if you're very familiar with NASCAR, its legends, and their stories, you might find some of the things he discusses to be old news or slightly cliched. But if you've never heard the anecdotes before, then they're extremely funny.

Annie Hunnicut's car breaks down in the mountains of Kentucky. Along comes "a good ol' boy" to rescue her. Annie doesn't realize that her savior is Buck LaSalle, the same man whose leading a group of workers to try and stop a factory closing--the job that Anne has been sent to do. Regardless of the fact that their at the opposite ends in a tug of war, Annie and Buck let friendship prevail. The best scene in this book happens at the bar. It starts with the two of them having fun, then turns to some jealousy, which leads to a misunderstanding that leave Annie's feelings hurt, which in return causes a big fight, and that fight leads them to their first night of lovemaking. Once Annie has finished her job, she's ready to return to New York--their last night together is heartbreaking. In the end, they both sacrifice for their love, which is a wonderful, funny end to this story. As a point of interest, Mary Kay wrote a sequal to this book with Buck's brother, Bryce, as the hero---"Sweet Dreamin' Baby".

The Hawk has been a major influence in Rock 'n'Roll as well as Country Music in Canada since the late 50's.Last year he was honored wiyh a star on Canada's Walk of Fame;a well deserved honor.This good 'ole boy from Arkansas tells it all;the good,bad ugly,fun,wild,happy,sad,times he has had over the years with his family,band,businesses,friends,fans and whoever else who could keep up with him.He knew and frolicked with the best of them and even a few nobodies,the only prerequisite being ,you wanted to have a good time. Everyone who was anybody,in the music business,crossed paths with him.
The book is written with the same speed as he lives his life.
If you want to read a book about a guy who has lived three lifetimes in the time that mortals have trouble living one,here's your book.No one man ,The Hawk excepted,of course,should ever have that much fun;then again,no other one man could.

Pleasant Overview of Business Continuity Management.......2004-05-14

Reading the material presented is a breeze. Unfortunately, it is unfair for me to pass judgement on the subject matter, as I am still a novice. Common concepts and definitions are presented on Section 1 while Section 2 expounds on the implementation aspects. Being a newbie I was somewhat impressed that the tasks involved even include mitigating human factors such as psychological effects, as well as a taskforce to handle the media with its coverage of any disaster that might be detrimental to the image of the company. An interesting concept presented was "Multilateral Business Continuity", as it raised questions on whether your business partner's (major customer, supplier, logistics) failure could even spell doom for your business.

BCM is presented as an all-encompassing "way of life", ensuring that a business can survive a disaster and bounce back to its pre-disaster profit level, and the tasks and information that is required to ensure proper diagnosis, prescription and maintenance of a business. As one of the authors put it - "Do we gamble with failure or hedge against it".

Although presented as a collection of 20 articles it is seamlessly organized that the information did not appear redundant. After which Case studies are presented on major disasters that happened to corporations in America, most notably 9/11. Considering the scope of BCP/BCM (Business Continuity Planning) endeavour, the market for its implementation within Malaysia is limited to listed companies that can afford the methodology preached. Plus, Asian cultures abhor having outsiders prodding through every nook and cranny of their business process and resource points, isolating weaknesses and identifying exposure and making sure that the business is resilient enough to withstand a collapse of its major infrastructure. Not only that, to ensure success, key personnel from all sectors have to be identified and interactions and accountability documented with redundancies and multiple information and escalation routes introduced to ensure resiliency. At the end of the day, one would envy the consulting firm that manages such a wealth of information from any such companies, which one would assume will be sizeable enough to want BCP/BCM. What a treat indeed!

On the downside, as expected with books that compiles articles, the depth of the information presented is quite shallow, but fortunately for a person like myself that are new to the subject, it's quite a readable experience as that is exactly what I am looking for. It provides enough pieces to the puzzle for me to proceed with my r&d activities.

Practical BCM at last!.......2000-01-25

This is a thoroughly welcome addition to the business continuity books on the market. It brings a clear, rational approach to a very complicated topic. Unsurprisingly, the book adheres to the ten stage process as defined by the Business Continuity Institute and the Disaster Recovery Institute and is written in a style that is easy to read and with very little jargon. (It even gives guidelines on how to read the book.)

The book outlines some important lessons:

- The Importance of business continuity management

- Business continuity plans should be based on outcome scenarios and not causes

- The need for an organized development/implementation

- BCM is never complete - amendments and testing will always be required

There are a couple of points to note though:

- It fails to deliver the message clearly that Business Continuity Management is an umbrella for business impact analysis, risk management and business continuity planning. Too many people just concentrate on the latter.

- My experience shows that many advantages are gained through the development of the plan when the business continuity is firmly in the minds of those involved and the management sponsors (who have allocated resources and funds). This is as important as the plan itself.

- Unlike chapter 15 (Developing the written plan), Chapter 18 (Selecting tools to support the process) is an example of where the book sits on a fence. It describes the types of tools required but gives no clear examples of data used. There are numerous examples that could have been used to illustrate this; perhaps this leaves the door open for consultancy opportunities!

- Another downside to the book occurs as early as section one, which is described as an executive overview and is 75 pages long!

Notwithstanding these minor grumbles, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone involved in BCM or anyone thinking about creating a more secure business.
