Hap Klopp has passed along a "Jewel" which he created with first hand experiences in both business and life. Klopp connects with reader using personal stories that include hard-work, adventure, and lots of fun. Klopp addresses subjects that we all encounter irrespective of our backgrounds, age, gender, religion and preferences. Few examples are:
* Beyond Profit "Profit is one measurement". Organizations should be measuring employee energy level, satisfaction and creativity.
* "Friends tell you when you are going wrong". It is important to find people that can be honest with you and guide you through good and bad times.
* "People want to be led; they want a vision to follow".
* Quality control using statistical tools to weed out defects is not the solution. Raising the bar to the highest standard is the best way forward.

This little book is packed with great ideas and information on the concept of leadership and management skills. Hap's observations of people and principals are clairvoyant!
Ultimately readable, with great human-interest stories, Hap evokes much of our own experiences and understanding as we journey with him through the conception of The North Face.
It's legendary history and individuals come to life, dancing with vitality as we read the saga of a unique and complex business adventure.
I give this a 5 star rating for anyone involved in business and life management!

Life-changing advice & fun to read.......2003-12-29

Hap Klopp started The North Face. I've got one of those coats, and it is great. So is this book. You will not believe how cool this guy is, and how inspirational AND irreverent he is in the context of building a spectacularly successful business. He quotes Jack Kerouac, he rubs shoulders with the world's most daring adventurers, and he works harder and smarter than anyone around him. His advice is spectacular because it feels so real. The people he writes of are the people doing some of the coolest things in the world - in business, sports, adventuring and other areas. He loves his employees. He has fun. Get this, he smokes pot and has been drunk. He's also been the first one in the parking lot for decades. Work hard, play hard - Klopp thinks that leading people is about emotional connections and shared visions. This is great stuff. If you really want to lead people - or find your way - in modern America, you've gotta read this book. Really, I'm telling you - wow! It's that good.

Best leadership book ever........1999-10-08

If you want to know what your team members really want from you, and you want some practical yet unorthodox advice that really works, absorb the contents of this book. I read it back in the early 1990's, and have read many other leadership books since, but this was simply the most inspiring leadership book I ever read. The lessons I learned from this book stuck with me longer than any other, and it helped me achieve outsanding results. PLEASE REPRINT IT!

This is a truly remarkable book! I wish I had it when I first learned to quilt years ago. Loaded with great tips and beautiful photographs, this book will not just collect dust on your shelves with all your other quilting "tips" books; it truly is a rare find. I have put several of the tips and tricks presented into use already and it has made my quilting quicker, and more fun. Great gift for beginners (send it along with some fabric!)

This study of Jonathan Sewall, an aristocratic Boston Loyalist, tells the compelling story of the passions and paradoxes of a country in the throes of the Revolution.

Born into a bankrupt branch of a prominent Massachusetts family in 1728, Sewall was educated at Harvard and, after a brief stint teaching school, went into law. He developed a friendship with John Adams that survived the Revolutionary War personally but not politically.

He thrived in his chosen profession taking up the art of the publicist in the service of his King. He wrote pamphlets, open letters, and newspapers columns under the pseudonyms of "Philanthrop" and "Philalethes."

Sewell sought to avoid confrontation with his revolutionary friends and while remaining independent in his appointed posts, but was trapped in the political hierarch of colonial Massachusetts. Unnerved by the “Boston Massacre”, Sewall retired to the country in order to avoid prosecuting the British soldiers involved. When the Revolution began in earnest, Sewall took refuge in England, confident that a quick British victory would return him to Massachusetts.

The last twenty years of his life were a sustained tragedy of being snubbed by the English, exhausted finances and declining physical and mental health.

A Good Theory Book If That's All You Need.......2006-09-15

I think that Follari wrote this book with a particular course aim in mind, one focused ONLY on theory. It only covers historical figures, theory, curriculum basics, and some issues of early childhood education. It doesn't go into any dynamics of the classroom by comparing infants/toddlers to primary school children and kindergarteners. If this is all that you need, then you have it here. I, however, think more is needed to make the book worth the price.

It's divided into three parts: foundations, models, and a "practical" section (which she calls Beginning the Journey). Part 1 focuses on the basics (obviously) while Part Two outlines the curriculum models that early childhood professionals must know about today. Part 3 is one chapter, an amalgamation of all of the previous eleven chapters into some sensible professional framework. It makes for a very dense, kind of abstract manual on the whole.

Out of all of the three sections, Part 1 works the best namely because of how it briefly, informatively, but clearly outlines the historical figures and movements of early childhood education in Chapter Two. This segues perfectly into constructivism within Chapter Three because it prevents the student from being overwhelmed with a large slab of theory at one time. Presenting, for example, Vygotsky's theories in a historical context followed by presenting his theory from a pedagogical context allows a young teacher-in-training to absorb the nuances of his ideas for long-term keeping rather than short-term test cramming.

Part Two works decently, but I think that Follari tries too hard (but valiantly) to condense the theories down while simultaneously keeping as many details as possible. Consequently, all of the details of, for example, High Scope are there, but little explanation is given to secure a firm understanding of it. These chapters go by a bit too fast for a novice. It's okay for a veteran teacher, but a new one needs a little more slowness and gradual detail...more hand-holding.

Part Three is only eight pages. It could have been integrated into Chapter One possibly.

On the whole, we get exactly what the title tells us: theory. I find it somewhat refreshing to read it without context, but, again, an undergraduate may need more practical meat to chew on. I think this book would make a good supplementary text rather that the anchoring textbook of an undergraduate introductory early childhood class. I would instead check out books by George S. Morrison, Feeney/Moracik, Jo Ann Brewer, and Robert Berk.
