Book Description

This indispensable tool provides you with thousands of building assembly and component costs. With accompanying drawings, explanations, component breakdowns, and reference tables all within one easy-to-use format, you can quickly estimate a building's square foot cost and easily compare and price alternatives.

You'll find separate reference aids with code requirements to assist you in budgeting any job, or in quickly checking a unit price estimate or subcontractor proposal. Tables of unit prices allow you to cost out virtually any combination of building components or assemblies in the logical sequence of how the building is built.

Using the UNIFORMAT II numbering system as a guideline for consistent estimating and reporting, Means Assemblies Cost Data 2004 enables you to easily price and compare various building assemblies. Use the manual's complete examples and references to build your own assembly cost data file.

The 2004 edition features:

--All the building components required to develop accurate square foot cost estimates and verify unit price estimates. Diagrams, descriptions, specifications, and costs.

--Costs to assist in making design/build budgetary decisions based on preliminary or conceptual information.

--Updated reference information and cost planning guidelines.

--Square foot costs for 58 most common building types.

--Easy-to-use estimating forms and index.

--City Cost Indexes and Location Factors for material and installation for more than 930 zip code locations in the U.S. and selected locations in Canada, (including How to Use information).

--Access to Means engineering staff for technical information about the cost data.

5 out of 5 stars A quick way to an estimate........2007-06-11

The Assemblies Cost Data method is a reliable and fairly quick way to generate an estimate. This is especially helpful if you want to compare the costs of different construction types (i.e. steel, pre-cast, cast-in-place). However, I found that I still needed the information in the more detailed Construction Cost Data book to fill in missing items, like demolition, louvers, or ceiling insulation.

5 out of 5 stars Means Cost Assemblies is Super Info! A lot more than prices.......2000-09-07

This book is great for those of us just starting out in construction - it breaks down each system so that you may price the pieces individually or as an entire system price.

It's really great if you don't know what you should be looking for in a complete system. For example, what goes into a stem wall - this book explains it, and then prices each individual part. Great resource!

James Ray is our hero here at Pug Headquarters. His Science of Success was good and his Million Dollar Mindset is equally as good.

These are common sense rules of conduct which can be easily applied for certain success.

Brian Tracey suggests we invest 3% of our gross income in learning tools. He also recommends to use wisely the time spent in our automobiles by listening to educational improvement material. James Ray's Million Dollar Mindset satisfies both those things.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a Blueprint for Creating Massive Wealth!.......2007-07-21

"The Million Dollar Mindset" is an incredible learning system from a true thought-leader in the field of wealth creation and personal development! As a celebrated wealth expert, James shares the proven methods that are guaranteed to turn a mindset of lack, limitation, and scarcity to one of prosperity, increase, and abundance. For these reasons alone, it's easy to see why Oprah invited him on her show, twice!

One of my favorite parts of "The Million Dollar Mindset" is contained within the 5th CD, which delves deeply into the psychological factors of influence. James uses the acronym C-R-A-L-S-S, which stands for consistency, reciprocity, authority, liking, social proof, and scarcity. Mastery of these factors combined with James' insight, is absolutely priceless and has sky-rocketed my income in the last few months! I've learned how to effectively leverage my time, efforts, and energy through other people.

I highly recommend this program to those that are serious about acquiring massive wealth. Since I've been so inspired by this course, I've been giving it as a special gift to friends, family, and fellow entrepreneurs. Reflecting on my phenomenal results from using James' system, the information included is worth thousands of dollars and James Ray International should charge what it's really worth!

1 out of 5 stars Save your millions!!!.......2002-11-14

This book is the most over rated book I have yet to find on Amazon.com. I was so excited about this book when I read the great reviews, only to become very disappointed when I got it. It really did sound promising!! I really am surprised at all the great reviews it has received.

Any reader of self-help books, will see that there is absolutely nothing new or different about this book. It is written in a very elementary style that is almost insulting to a person's intelligence. The "tests" at the end of the chapters seem as if they are written for a child.

Throughout the book the author is constantly referring to MDM$...which is code for Million Dollar Mindset. It is mentioned so often, you feel as if you have purchased an advertisement for her company instead of an informational book.

Bottom line advice: SAVE your money!!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and helpful.......2002-03-08

The author discusses many of the challenges she has overcome in her life, and offers a fresh approach to sweeping through achieve satisfaction in life. Her book has numerous tips highlighted throughout that provide useful information and direction. Two of these were of specific and immediate use to me increase my business and decrease stress and clutter. Her writing style is easy to read, and contains many unique, helpful, insights.

5 out of 5 stars This will help change your life.......2002-03-07

Since meeting Cathy one year ago I have learned how to deal with my elderly Mother -I hope my kids won't have to deal with me in the same way.
My Mother had me on a yo-yo until Cathy taught me how to give her boundaries that she didn't even realize I was doing. We actually can enjoy each other's company now. Cathy has also taught or I should say is still teaching me to set priorities for Rhoda and to put Rhoda first. This is a difficlt step for me but I am getting there. Her book is helping too. That is a must for anyone who desires to improve themselves in business orpersonal life. It is EXCELLENT./// Rhoda Collier,Consultant

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational book!.......2002-03-07

If you are looking for an inspirational book that is unlike any other, this is the one! The author draws from her health issues and guidance from God to tell us how to have the "million dollar mindset." She shows us how our beliefs directly affect our attitudes and actions and how to change them for the best. She also addresses gut feelings, time management, healthy eating, relationships and parenting, entrepreneur issues, overcoming adversity and self-care. I found the book a refreshing break from other "dry" and general self-help books. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down and immediately wanted to start on my own "million dollar mindset" notebook!

5 out of 5 stars Great Practical Advice.......2002-02-19

At first, you might think "The Million Dollar Mindset" is all about how to make more money, but it's not. What's great is that Cathy Kato gives practical advice on living an authentic life and encourages us to expand our thinking to include abundance in all aspects of our lives. It's clear from the stories she tells that she has done this work herself--overcoming many obstacles in her own life--and has helped many clients to do the same. Her advice is thoughtful, doable, and heartfelt!

5 out of 5 stars The most practical chemical engineering book ever!!!!.......2007-05-02

If you are a working chemical or process engineer this book is great to check how equipments are really built. If you are a student or a professor, you may not found it very helpful. It shows you for real how equipments are design with several constructive details.

        3 out of 5 stars Overwhelming.......2006-11-10

Tons of information but nearly useless for the process design course that I am taking this semester. Avoid paying full price because it is like a big reference book

4 out of 5 stars This is Not Perry's.......2005-04-16

The book starts out with some refinery flow sheets for making 'grasoline' from 'californing' crude. Process control is simple enough. The next section on fluid flow uses non-standard equations which are overly complex. The same goes for heat transfer. Fair does a good job on distillation. Reaction engineering is completly omited from this text.

4 out of 5 stars The most practical chemical engineering reference book.......1997-09-22

For the working chemical process design engineer, this is the best reference I've come across. It tells you how to pick equipment and generally how to determine equipment sizes. As a design or procurement engineer you work with vendors to make final equipment selection, but this book gives you what you need to know before you start talking to the vendors. It bridges the gap between theory you can get from textbooks and detailed applications you can get from sales literature. I'm surprised this book hasn't caught on as a standard in the chemical engineering profession

                Book Description

Add pizazz to any quilt by capturing the vibrant energy of string piecing. The authors show how to create exciting and graphic quilts using 'strings', narrow strips of fabric, sewn to a paper or fabric foundation. You can chain piece your strings for fast and easy sewing - fun to do alone or with a friend. Twelve simple and delightful string quilt patterns, with complete step-by-step instructions, will introduce you to the unlimited possibilities of this classic technique. The patterns give a colorful new look to such traditional favorites as Spools, Lone Stars, and Kaleidoscopes. AUTHORBIO: Bobbie Aug and Sharon Newman met in Paducah, Kentucky, at the 1989 American Quilter's Society Show. Both were in the first group tested and certified as quilt appraisers by AQS. Currently, both serve as members of the AQS Appraiser Certification Program Committee. Sharon also serves as the program's administrator. REVIEW: Rob Holland of Planet Patchwork says, "Another venerable technique, string piecing, is given a fresh treatment in Bobbie Aug and Sharon Newman's new book. String piecing provides a way to break free of blocks (though it can also be used in blocks) and to add energy and surprise to your designs. Much of the energy in some African-American quilting stems from the string technique."

I bought this book and my fingers started itching to make one or all of these patterns. But first, the fun part --- just keep stitching long, or not so long, strips of scrap fabrics of all kinds together. Follow the simple instructions combining colors and prints, whatever you pull out of your scrap pile. When you're finished you'll have some really funky material to work with. Now use the measurements or templates given to make squares, triangles, diamonds, whatever, to make a new old-fashioned looking quilt. Lots of color pictures are included to give you a great selection. OR design your own. Believe me, it's not difficult! That's why this book is so great.

                5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational.......2000-03-15

Or how to make a scrap quilt fast and accurately without sweat ! Every time I look at this book I want to try a new pattern : the technique is well explained and there are great photos of all the quilts projects. There are also extra pictures of old "Stringies" to inspire you. If you've never tried string quilts before this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars A fast but not really filling read........2003-10-30

Richard B Russell Democrat from Winder Georgia, was an extremely skilled parlimentarian and executive. However he was easy prey for Lyndon Johnson who gave him the shad treatment. In looking at this man's life he accomplished many things but in the end was lacking in 3 things. The courage to step up and lead the Senate and bend it to his will on agricultural and defense issues and an inability to see beyond his roots and their limiting factors he could of broken the mold and become President if he realized that geography and socioeconomic factors would inflict a defacto segragation on America and that once they were done with the Civil rights struggle the north would lose much of it's passion for social reform and change and the nation would be generally like it always was with blacks in the end vanishing into the mostly white Hispanic race. The third thing that I found him lacking in was honor he was but a Lyndon Johnson stepping stone and no Samuel T Rayburn.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Senators To NEVER Be President.......1999-12-30

Henry Clay. Daniel Webster. John C. Calhoun. James F. Byrnes. Robert A. Taft. Hubert Humphrey. Add Richard Russell to this list and what do you get? A collection of our nation's most accomplished and able Senators who never became President. All of these men were giants in their time, and Russell was no exception. The youngest Governor in Georgia history, Russell came to Washington as a Senator in 1933 and left in the early 70's, feet first. A legislator of uncommon ability, Russell was a master of the procedures, traditions, and customs of the Senate; of parliamentary tactics; and was constructive on all matters of domestic or foreign policy. His peers referred to him as a 'Senator's Senator', Presidents called him a 'President's Senator'. His hold over Georgia's political and business establishments enabled him to seek reelection every six years unopposed. Unfortunately, his refusal to change his political position or personal attitudes on the issue of civil rights doomed him to be a 'regional Senator' rather than a 'national' one. He sought the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1952, but won only the delegates from the states of the Confederacy. Despite the increasing liberalism of his party, Russell the conservative, voted the straight Democratic ticket in every election. Russell was perhaps truly the last great statesman of the Senate.

4 out of 5 stars Story, yes; insight, no........1999-07-29

This book is a straightforward account of the life of one of the 20th century's five most important U.S. senators. However, it falls short in examining Russell's ideology, which is tied to his time and place when it is ever mentioned. A fully satisfactory biography will have to explore the man behind the rise of Lyndon Johnson, the coordinated southern resistance to integration, and much of Senate anti-Communism from an intellectual point of view.

Broadcaster Jon Miller didn't know he was a baseball "purist" until acting commissioner Bud Selig accosted him with the moniker on national TV in 1993. "At one time," writes Miller in retrospect, "the label 'baseball purist' could've been worn as a badge of honor. Any legitimate fan would've been pleased to be thought of as a purist. But I suppose that to Mr. Selig, a purist was a lonely old man hunched over a windup Victrola, thumbing through a 1929 Who's Who in Baseball, fretting that the game just hasn't been the same since the Babe retired." In Confessions Miller admits to being a purist--loosely defined by him not as a forlorn fan stuck in a period-piece movie but as a fan knowledgeable enough to realize that baseball evolves for the good of the game--despite what myopic owners might try to perpetrate in the short term. In a chapter titled "The Good Old Days Are Now," Miller reminds die-hards of the old adage about things changing and staying the same. To wit, here's Ty Cobb in 1925: "The great trouble with baseball today is that most of the players are in the game for the money." Miller goes on to suggest that the 1990s will be remembered in 20 years as a "golden age" of hitting and that accusations of juiced balls, watered-down pitching, smaller ballparks, and expansion still cannot account for this decade's abundance of outstanding batters. The voice of the San Francisco Giants (and formerly the Baltimore Orioles) holds forth on everything from interleague play (it's good for the game but messy) to traveling with Cal Ripken (a game of Strat-O-Matic baseball reveals just how competitive the Iron Man really is). Occasionally he whiffs--as when he suggests that ballparks install 20-second time clocks to keep pitchers hurling at a reasonable pace. But ultimately what comes through the anecdotes and arguments is his tremendous love for the game and a generous capacity for recognizing the quality of the present and not just the past. --Langdon Cook

                Book Description

Just mention the word baseball and a huge smile beams across his cherubic face. Ask him about the grace of Ken Griffey, Jr.; the power of Frank Thomas; and the precociousness of Alex Rodriguez and he'll delight you for hours with tales of the beauty of the game. The Golden Days of baseball are now, he'll tell you, and then he'll go on to prove it. He's Jon Miller, and in this candid, funny, forthright volume he tells us why baseball is the greatest game and why -- despite the counterproductive comments of owners and players -- it will continue to be well into the twenty-first century.

In Confessions of a Baseball Purist, Miller takes us on a journey into the heart of baseball as he's seen it from the best seat in the house. He brings to life the emotion of the night Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record, the history-soaked drama when the Giants and Dodgers faced off in a crucial pennant-race series in September '97, Eddie Murray's fitting return to the Orioles to hit his 500th home run, and the day Edward Bennett Williams -- owner of the Orioles -- approved the plans for the creation of Camden Yards. But Jon doesn't shy from pointing a finger at the darker forces at work in the game: the insanity of not having a real commissioner; the follies of radical realignment and excessive reliance on novelties like widespread interleague play; the old-time players and broadcasters -- including his good friend and partner Joe Morgan -- who don't accept that today's players are bigger, faster, stronger, and better; players who denigrate the game, not realizing that by doing so they're insulting their own fans; and owners and general managers who can't make a move without discussing the economic ramifications, even though that's the last thing their fans (or, to use the owners' term, their customer base) want to hear about.

With charming candor and disarming wit, Miller takes us from the broadcaster's booth into the stands and down onto the field and into the dugout. He pays tribute to his heroes and his partners, who include some of the classic voices that shaped his love of the game: Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons, Vin Scully, Hank Greenwald, Chuck Thompson, and Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek. He tells about the Opening Day rain delay that launched a second career as an after-dinner speaker in Boston, as his partner Ken Coleman led him into doing his now-famous Vin Scully impersonation; the maddening experience of working for Charles O. Finley, an owner who managed the remarkable feat of building a World Championship team that finished next-to-last in the league in home attendance; and the pleasure of being a part of the growth and development of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball into the game's weekly showcase for a nationwide audience. He profiles some of his favorite baseball personalities, from Reggie Jackson and Kirby Puckett to Alvin Dark and Charles Steinberg; shares inside stories from the broadcast booth about the secrets of Phil Rizzuto's scorebook ("WW" means "Wasn't Watching") and what to do when your partner is knocked cold by a foul line drive; and tells, for the first time, the story behind his leaving the Baltimore Orioles after fourteen years doing the team's games.

True to the broadcaster's art, Confessions of a Baseball Purist calls the game the way Jon Miller sees it: with wit, with style, and with absolute candor. For the baseball purist in all of us, Miller provides a rallying cry, some warm memories, and reasons to keep believing in the game we love.

                2 out of 5 stars Flawed.......2006-05-30

I got this book for Christmas and read it Memorial Day weekend. I love Jon Miller's voice and play-by-play skills. That being said the book leaves much to be desired. The chapter on the "Good Old Days are Now" is extremely silly looking today. Realizing that this was written between the '97 and '98 seasons at first Miller must have looked like a genius as McGwire and Sosa battled for the single season home run record, but in 2006,it seems ridiculous. Especially, after McGwire embarassed himself in front of the Senate the way he did. It's funny how Miller tells the story of how he was amazed at how huge McGwire's biceps were. Rather cocky of McGwire to be showing off his chemically enhanced physique. My other problem is that Miller is not completely truthful. There is a section where he tells of how he would go to A's games with friends (when he was 14) and tape himself broadcasting. Miller was born in 1952, which would have had this happening around 1966 or 1967. He then tells us that sometimes his "broadcasts" would be ruined if a fan sitting close by had brought his boombox. Around this time FM radio was in its infancy and boomboxes did not hit the stores until almost ten years later. Unless, this fan had stepped through a wormhole or was able to warp the space-time fabric, there is no way Miller's broadcasts were ruined by boomboxes. His anectdotes are good enough that he doesn't need to supplement them with such a glaring untruth. It casts a shadow of suspicion on everything else. The is no room for poetic license in a memoir.

5 out of 5 stars humorous and entertaining anecdotes and thoughts.......2004-04-02

This book brings forth the thoughts of one of the most well known and well respected broadcasters in baseball today. This book came out in 1998 when Miller started as a Giants broadcaster. His broadcasts on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball and radio broadcasts for the Giants bring out his personality. He's dedicated to his job and had been interested in broadcasting since he was a child. His passion for the game of baseball and his attentiveness to perfecting his craft only added to his skill in the descriptions of his broadcasts and brought the feel of the flow of the game while it's unfolding live in front of his eyes. If you are familiar with Miller's broadcasts on TV or radio then you won't lose a step when reading his book because it is similar to the way he broadcasts. Miller brings about his thoughts about some of the issues in baseball like realignment as proposed by Bud Selig, to the personalities of owners he has known and how they contributed to the rise or demise of a franchise, and stories about Cal Ripken and some insider accounts from the clubhouse about his consecutive game streak. Miller bring a good light-hearted folksy humor that will make you smirk or guffaw with tongue in cheek. It is interesting in the fact that it feels like he conversing with you like you were at a bar and he was telling interesting stories which would be either intriguing or funny. This is a nice book for baseball fans who want to see things from the perspective of a broadcaster. The book reads easily and shouldn't take too long to read at all.

                4 out of 5 stars A Fine Memoir.......2000-01-31

I received this book along with Joe Morgan's as a Christmas present, and it was interesting to read them in tandem, as it shows why they are such a complementary broadcast team. Miller's book is more an anecdotal memoir than a detailed analysis of the game, but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment of it. His tribute to Ken Coleman, the retired Red Sox radio broadcaster, brought back to this Red Sox fan vivid memories of Miller's all-too-brief stay in Boston. The book, however, suffered from an editing job that assumed that the reader had a familiarity with Miller's personal life and career history. For example, there are several references to his first marriage which both assume that the reader knows that Miller was married before and why it ended. But these references are extraneous and add nothing to this picture of Miller as broadcaster and baseball purist -- which, after all, is the book's primary focus.

                4 out of 5 stars Funny memoir.......1999-09-01

More of a memoir than anything else, the book is unflaggingly interesting and funny, especially if one can imagine Miller himself reading it. An audiocassette version of this book might well be the ultimate way to experience it. In any case, it just breezes by, leaving you with a warm feeling and a greater desire to hear more Miller broadcasts afterward.

                3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......1999-08-02

Maybe I'm being too critical here. I mean, I like Jon Miller. He's an excellent broadcaster. He certainly knows his baseball. But can he write? The answer (even with assistance) is, disappointingly, no. He has some good anecdotes, and makes some good points, but as I was reading it, I couldn't help wondering, "Where is this book going?" The answer is nowhere. It's meandering and disjointed. He makes all of his "controversial" points in the first chapter, but then offers nothing to back up his theses later in the book. Still, if you want to learn about Jon Miller, to read some interesting stories about the colorful players and broadcasters Miller has encountered over the years, AND get a defense in of Miller's decision to leave the broadcasting booth for the Baltimore Orioles, then go ahead and buy the book. But, perhaps you would feel you're getting your money's worth if you waited for the paperback version or maybe borrowed it from your local library.

2 out of 5 stars This book is simplistic.......2000-11-03

The author provides case study after case study with practically no analysis himself. He spends an entire chapter promoting himself and lambasting a client who didn't heed his advice.

Is this a good book for newcomers? Possibly. If you're a student and don't know much about public relations this book will probably interest you. If you're a practioner and this book is anything other than remidal reading, it may be time to consider finding a new career.

To his credit, the author does present case studies that run the gamut from non-profits, to disasters, to educational instituions, to criminal clients. He does provide a wide array of different situations.

I have no doubt that the author is an excellent practioner of the art of public relations. As a journalist and an instructor, the book leaves something to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2000-03-16

I found this to be one of the best books out there on risk and crisis communication. The author succinctly presents a wealth of practical information and tips. This book is as useful for newcomers to the field, as well as those who have weathered many a crisis. In addition, its universal advice applies to all organizations--whether you are in industry, government, education, sports, or non-profit. I've bought copies for all my staff!

5 out of 5 stars Great Desk Resource.......2002-03-20

I'm a tax attorney and I have this book as a desk resource. It is a great general text on a variety of tax issues. This book has helped me find the quick answers to countless "simple" tax questions.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Textbook covering Corporate Tax.......2001-01-10

This textbook has a counterpart INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX, also published by West's Federal Taxation that is used extensively by business schools as well as accounting classes covering all the aspects of taxation.

The book is written in an easy to understand manner, which follows the most important codes that are used in tax today. The only drawback of these books are the fact that since the tax codes are constantly changing, the books are updated about every year.
