"Manages to reach to the limits of bad taste!"-Abbie Hoffman.......2004-11-19

Buy This Book was one of the first graphic novels, but, unlike Maus and most of the others that followed, is not in a narrative/sequential form. It's innovative design is more reminiscent of Marshal McLuhan's "Medium is the Massage", perhaps crossed with a bit of MAD magazine. Abbie Hoffman really DID characterize it as above, and the Small Press Review called it "profoundly moral." Includes a visual excursion through the 1970s in author/artist/designer Pete Wagner's political cartoons. The meat of the book is about "post-Sixties political activism" and advocated a kind of surreptitious revolution using humor rather than violence. The author's friendship with Yippie leader Abbie Hoffman was an influence on both the title and the content.

This book examines the new and rapidly developing area of law relating to trade in financial services, with a particular focus on the rules contained in Chapter 14 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The Trojan Horse of NAFTA.......2000-07-29

NAFTA has come to mean many things to many people. The most recent chapter of NAFTA (or TLC in Mexico) is the presumed opening of financial services sector under NAFTA. To complicate the equation, the US has passed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which replaces the "sinister" Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. The new opening of financial sector under NAFTA means very different things to Canada, Mexico and the US. The book goes through the Chapter 14 of NAFTA with a fine toothed comb. It explains how it came about. It deals with the "negative list" approach of NAFTA as opposed to "positive list" approach of CUSFTA with respect to the financial services. Unfortunately, the book is long on description and short on analysis. It does not include any analysis of Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (as it was actually written as Schefer's doctoral thesis sometime in 1998). This is unfortunate. The book also dwells almost exclusively on banking. Surely financial services mean a lot more than just banking. Insurance (for example) gets lip service. More glaring omission comes from complete silence about Banking Secret Laws (Secreto Banacario) of Mexico. This Act will be a source of lot of international friction under NAFTA.

An Organizational Blueprint for Software Project Success.......2000-04-24

This is a book written by a software project manager for software project managers, et. al., actually good for anyone involved in software development. Whitten gives an honest look at some of the reasons for project failure and provides a practical and workable blueprint for ensuring software project success.

He provides a good functional description of the key project players in a software development organization that can easily be adapted to any size organization. He defines the key roles in a project (Project Manager, Business Architect, Product Architect, Process Architect, Team Leader, etc.) in a way that makes the need for these roles seem intuitively obvious -- after you've read it, of course.

Much of the secret to project success, according to Whitten, lies in the clear delineation of project responsibilities, in the individual acceptance of these responsibilities, and the willingness to be accountable for one's activites. Whitten provides several sample scenarios for establishing project management organizations and process control for large, medium, and small projects, as well as managing multiple projects with a single organization.

Whitten speaks as one who has managed, coached, and consulted through decades of software development projects and acquired a rather large laundry list of "what-not-to-do" in a software project. His writing style is one of frankness and honesty in appraising the right and wrong ways to manage software development projects.

Very Precise.......2007-08-07

I have read this book - it is the first book that I completed in 2 hours. Very short and precise, but I think some of the principles (if not all) are very well explained in books authored by Norman Peale.

I personally felt that the author has done a good job, but is expecting the readers to make sense of most of the things and think out for themselves what may be best for them. So in a way, it does not say much about passion, motivation and goal setting.

A Great Book from a Great Friend........2002-07-13

I spent great hours with Alan Guinn's book and since I know him in person it was even a better experience because it was like hearing him saying those words.

It was the same Alan Guinn I know just talking to me. And that was one of the best features of the book, it was a person to person experience and not just like other books where the authors believe they know everything about my life and know exactly what is better for me.

It was like if he was telling me his perception of life and shared with me some insights he collected through his life. It was a sharing experience, not a teaching one.

That's why I feel confortable in recommending this book.
