This biography appears to be complete and well-researched but is buried by facts, names, dates, etc. without any sense of character or passion. The book, and the main character, have no pulse, making this an academic exercise in annotated timelines.

I agree with another reviewer that a lot of unnecessary wandering in the wilderness makes this book a tiring effort to enjoy, but some of the reviews seem to miss utterly the author's intense perspective which is nothing less than a fervent glance at Richelieu unscourged. Levi's historical take is often speculative, or is it? Perhaps it's more an unsolicited testament of things from the vantage point of those whom many historians have decided, in their churning quest to install an egalitarian privilege, are easily brushed aside, their subject's particular paradigm having been in their view eclipsed.

Richelieu himself, master of detail, would likely find himself more readily in Levi's book than in most textbooks and any number of insufficient biographies. You'll need a comprehensive understanding of the royal houses of Europe and the intricate volleying and snuggling between them to make sense of quite a bit of this book. Nor will you find a wholesale dismissal of the Roman Church's temporal politics here, and rightly so. This, after all, is history, not a fairyland for the democracy besotted. Even an Irish Times review on the back of the book can't help referring to "an allegedly devout mystery..." I suspect there are already too many allegedly brave biographies whose principle recommendation is a tawdry bias.

Levi's book gives an unindicted account of the Cardinal and his world. I'm grateful for that, despite the book's onerous flaws - sometimes incoherent writing, an at times merciless academic posture, and some unnecessary repetition. Four solid stars, but then, I'm a stickler for the real thing.

A good biography............2004-02-12

I found Anthony Levi's biography on Cardinal Richelieu to be quite readable and informative. The author definitely appears to know his subject well and the complex personality of Richelieu comes out with clarity and understanding. When you write a biography of man like Richelieu, background materials must be included to revealed the extraordinary period that he lived which made Richelieu, such an extraordinary historical personage. While deeply hated by his own people during his lifetime, it would be no discredit if he would be regarded as a national hero today since without Richelieu, there may not be a France as we know it.

Poor history mixed with faux scholasticism.......2003-08-08

I'm the person whom Amazon lists above as "people who bought this book also bought Talleyrand (Duffy)".

Levi divides this book into two parts. The first half is history in the "in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue" style that went out years ago. It is a numbing recital of: "in 16xx ABC did this; in 16xx DEF did that; and in 16xx so did GHI". This half of the book is poorly organized. Often Levi is forced to double back 10 to 20 pages in order to pick up something he forgot. Unless you have a good grasp of 17th century France, you will find the wild cascade of unrelated names and places disorienting. Don't waste your time trying to follow the history. Much of it is factually debatable. Levi never even quite seems to figure out when the 30 Years War took place.

In part two Levi takes up the cultural side. This half of the book abandons the "in 1492" approach for some of the worst academic English you are ever going to meet. The man simply cannot construct a pointed English sentence. I quit counting the number of consecutive 50 to 70 WORD sentences. Subjects and verbs seldom seem to meet, much less agree. Only experts at diagramming sentences need apply.

Levi is clearly not in his home area. Bluntly, anyone who can dismiss Corneille, Pascal, and Descartes is simply not well grounded in this period and its follow up. The lengthy discussion of Jansenism puts Levi into a subject area he clearly does not understand. About all you can say he got right for certain is that Richelieu and the Jansenists were not on good terms.

This book is a quandary. In many respects it is a hagiographic gloss of Richelieu. As a piece of popular history it is barely skin deep. Historical accuracy and much of the religious interpretation is questionable. The political analysis is simplistic and incomplete. (Hopefully, you already understand the relations of the Habsburgs, Dutch, Swedes, Germans, and the Pope. Levi spends a lot of time wandering in the wilderness here.) The quality of writing is pretentious in the second half, and questionable throughout. When finished, you will have done little more than confirmed the preconceptions about Richelieu you brought with you, picked up some notions about Louis XIII, and maybe have acquired a smattering of dates.

A man of contradiction and contrast.......2003-08-01

This is a good work of popular history. As he wrote it, Levi was probably thinking of people like me who know their knowledge of French history in the 17th century is inadequate but don't want to spend months in the library filling in the gaps. The book is full of important figures like Marie de Medici, Anne of Austria, and Gaston of Orleans, but Richelieu and his career are at the center of the whole story. The author is at his best when analyzing Richelieu psychologically and morally, but he seems to value those of his subject's virtues that might place him closer to the Homeric moral universe than to ours. He praises the cardinal for his bravery, tenacity, and ruthlessness rather than looking for signs of compassion, tenderness, or justice. Of course Richelieu was intensely loyal to the king, Louis XIII, but he was equally loyal to his own quest for power, prestige, and possessions, three realms in which he met with overwhelming success. One of the interesting side issues in the book is the king's inability to relate sexually to women and his dalliances with several men, most notably with Cinq-Mars, who betrayed him. Richelieu did his best to protect the king's reputation even in this area. The more important question Levi works with is how Richelieu almost single-handedly changed France from a collection of separate areas, princedoms and duchies, with their various customs, laws, traditions and loyalties, into a modern nation-state under the absolute authority of the monarch. He also did much to promote culture, art, and literature. But he achieved all this at the cost of unendurable suffering among the common people, who were over-taxed, underfed, and who lived in general misery. Naturally, he was generally despised.

A well written, comprehensive, practical guide to knowledge management in the law office. The author has taken the theory of knowledge management and explained why it is so critical to the "business of law" - ie why, since lawyers only sell knowledge, they must have a knowledge management program in place. She then describes how any law office can apply the theory to their practice - giving helpful hints on developing the knowledge management strategy, and implementing specific initiatives. I have read a lot on this topic, but nothing comes close to this book.

A must read.......2004-01-26

This book is a must read for every managing partner. The author makes a compelling case for why, as a knowledge based business, knowledge management is fundamental to the successful operation of a law firm or law department. Rusanow's book is the only book on the application of knowledge management theory to the legal profession. Her approach is easy to read, practical and business oriented. Through her examples of knowledge management in law firms, her mastery of this topic and its application to the legal profession is clearly evident.

Rusanow's approach is much broader than the typical technology centric approach to knowledge management - recognizing that while technology is the enabler, lawyers must also look at scope, organization and culture to be successful at knowledge management. Chapters are also dedicated to the relationship between knowledge management and clients, and how to measure the value of knowledge management. The author also devotes a chapter each to knowledge management for law departments and solo practitioners.

I highly recommend it!

Book Review: Knowledge Management and the Smarter Lawyer.......2004-01-26

The first book on KM expressly written for lawyers came out this year. It is Knowledge Management and the Smarter Lawyer by Gretta Rusanow. The publisher is American Lawyer Media, the leading legal news publisher in the U.S. This book is a guide for implementing KM programs in law firms. It paints a rosy picture about how KM can help a law business. "If knowledge management is done well, leveraging the knowledge that differentiates you from your competitors will lead to reduced costs, increased revenue, increased profitability, a more satisfying work environment - and the best lawyers, the best clients and the best work." (p. 31)

Rusanow provides this definition for KM: "[K]nowledge management is the leveraging of your firm's collective wisdom by creating systems and processes to support and facilitate the identification, capture, dissemination and use of your firm's knowledge to meet your business objectives." (p. 7) She says that firms need to develop KM strategies. Such strategies may mean starting small with a pilot project in a practice group. Rusanow acknowledges that larger KM initiatives require management support.

Rusanow sets the record straight that KM is not simply a technology solution. She suggests that attorneys should spend time creating a knowledge base of precedent documents as part of a KM program. Precedent documents are form documents that would be commonly used by other attorneys. The idea is these documents will improve efficiency so lawyers will spend less time "reinventing the wheel". The trouble is, in law, wheels come in so many shapes and sizes. Rusanow recommends that senior attorneys should be creating the precedent documents while associates would alter them to fit circumstances according to their clients' needs. This way of doing things would change the way firms conduct their business. Senior attorneys may not want to lose time that they could be billing to their clients.

Rusanow identifies the time-based billing model as "probably the single greatest barrier to knowledge management." (p. 194) She says hourly billing promotes inefficiency because it rewards slow work, but KM is about efficiency. She advocates alternative billing methods such as billing by transaction. The American Bar Association's Commission on Billable Hours has explored such options, but it seems that the ubiquitous practice of hourly billing is firmly entrenched in the legal community. For reasons not related to knowledge management, many attorneys would like to do away with billable hours. These reasons have to do with quality of life issues. There is great pressure on attorneys to meet billing quotas, frequently more than 2,000 hours a year. Regardless, hourly billing looks like it is here to stay.

All in all, Rusanow's book seems to offer more cheerleading than evidence that her version of knowledge management will work. The 484-page book includes only two references to other sources. One is a Nonaka article, The Knowledge Creating Company, and the other is a report produced by her own consulting agency, Curve Consulting. Rusanow should have included references to the works of other KM theorists, including Working Knowledge by Davenport and Prusak.

It will be interesting to see how well this book is accepted by the legal community. It is unlikely that its concepts will be implemented wholesale because of its position on time-based billing. One thing it will do is open up the idea that KM is more than a technology solution.

Another book on KM for attorneys, Effective Knowledge Management for Law Firms by Matthew Parsons will hit the presses in 2004. Oxford University Press will publish it.

Projects Are the People.......2002-07-12

Project management is people management. This book provides great insights and profound practicle guidance on how to accomplish that successfully. Responding to the challenge of keeping contributors motivated in a high pressure environment, we are reminded: "All people are motivated. The question is:'Motivated by what?'" I also like the quote, "There is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequals." The graph contrasting Project Stages versus Team Development Stages on page 63 is also a very useful contribution. Anyone looking for some sound guidance on how to help people navigate the complexities of projects would be well served by reading this book.

Way back in 1513, Machiavelli, when he wrote The Prince, described a problem repeatedly faced by Project Managers. ?It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones.?

Randolph and Posner have the solution. A solid methodology for project management is certainly necessary, but not sufficient. Project management is not just planning, execution, and control; it is about people and bringing them together in a common vision. Most books written about project management focus on methodology but stop short of people aspects. Not so with this book; it explains how to manage this eminently critical resource in such a way as to optimize their performance on your project. Think of it as getting extraordinary performance from ordinary people. Checkered Flag Projects is a must read for all Project Managers.

Excellent Book!!.......2002-11-07

Like Maria Bruscino Sanchez's other books, this is filled with easy, delicious recipes. I received this for my birthday a week ago and we have already tried several recipes. Each one we have tried was easy, tasted great, and the kids were able to help. They are all "keepers". The Eggnog cookies are particularly good. We have made three batches and plan to make more for Christmas. The Maple cookies are aso excellent, another keeper in our house. I hope Maria Bruscino Sanchez writes another book fast, I can't wait to try anything else she makes.

I've looked for this book for a long time. I am interested in Sammy's life
and his death, and I learned much more about his life from his daughter Tracey. It is a fast read book, very imformative, and heart-breaking.

As a life long fan of Sammy Davis, I loved this book..........2006-08-20

There are lots of things written on Sammy Davis. I started watching him on TV as a child and as a present my parents took me to see him in Golden Boy on Broadway. I saw him in concert another 7 times. I recently saw a video of his impersonation of Michale Jackson, and I remembered how much I truly ENJOYED his performances. I've read his other biographies.

I have to say, I am truly glad that his daughter wrote this book. It is a truly enlightening perspective - a child's viewpont of her Dad, both good and bad, and her life as Tracy, Two Commas. Her word for having grown up as, Sammy's Kid.

I found the story a wonderful adventure. It made him so real. Okay, he wasn't a great father, but he was who he was and he was one of the greatest performaners ever.

Thank you, Tracey Davis, I really enjoyed this.

I enjoyed this book. It was very interesting to hear about Sammy's life and lifestyle from his child's perspective. The book was written in an uplifting manner. I do wish the author had gone into more detail regarding her brothers' & mother's lives and feelings on things. It's a fast read!

a daughter's tribute to her neglectful, self-centered father.......2001-08-19

The sometimes touching story of a girl who wants nothing more in the world than her famous and utterly neglectful father to just love her and recognize her. Much of the book is a pathetic story of this sick alcoholic father doing just about everything humanly possible in life BUT give her what she needs. The odd thing about this book, though really not odd considering how common it is, is that this girl goes through her life so utterly proud of her failure of a father, proud of all his accomplishments, proud of the famous people he hobnobs with, proud of how much time he gives them, proud of how fancy and star-studded his parties are, proud of how much he loves his audiences and spares them no attention, proud of how much money he has, and vicariously proud of herself for just being the daughter of one so awesome.

It's really a sad book, its saddest aspect being that the daughter, while writing, doesn't even realize that though she felt her father "came around" in the end and really learned to love her and treat her well, it never really happened! Sammy David, Jr. DIDN'T come around in the end and learn to love his daughter, his daughter simply matured and learned to relate to him more on his level, thus meeting more of his needs and making a relationship with her that much more palatable to HIM.

The reason I found this book worthwhile enough to plow through was that it gave a strong inside view into the life of an extremely wounded and self-centered man and showed now just how much his neglect affected his child, but also how distorted HER thinking could be as a result of this neglect, allowing her to mistake his few crumbs of love far too late in life for the nutritious meal she once deserved.

This book is really a daughter's tribute to her famous father. My question, really, is her motive for writing it. I suspect that she had grandiose motivations of her own, and wants to bask in the sunlight of her father's glory. I'm always suspicious of tell-alls like this, especially ones that tell "dirty" secrets of still living people who are close to the writers, such as things like the alcoholism of her step-mother, her brother's drug abuse and homelessness...and her own suicide attempt. Although I'm not a puritan by any means, I feel some of these things, for the author's own personal and emotional safety, would be better left told to a therapist...

Has It's Weaknesses.......2001-07-21

The reminisences of her childhood as Sammy Davis Jr.'s only bloodchild is interesting "remember, you're a Davis" and adds interesting insight. However, this book is marred by her obvious hatred and long tangents against Altovise, the third Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr.(which is clearly due to the fact that her mother was the second Mrs. Davis) If you over look this, it makes a good read.
