Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Directory of Business and Professional Associations in China.......2003-03-13

This book is great for research and marketing work related to China business. I would keep it!

2 out of 5 stars Less than complete..........2003-01-14

I found Lau's book to be less-than-complete in offering a comprehensive list of Chinese Associations. If you are looking for specific Light Industry and Consumer Product Associations in China, better keep looking as they are not referenced in this publication.

Furthermore and most disappointing, after submitting the necessary paperwork to obtain access to the "Online Database" -which is advertised as being included with the purchase - I never received my username and password from the publisher...and my emails went unanswered.

5 out of 5 stars Directory of Business & Professional Associations in China.......2002-11-30

This Directory is the most resourceful book one could find in the market on its subject. It's great for conducting market research and locating relevant business associations to develop business relationship with counterparts in China. I would recommend this Directory to all business people doing or planning to do business with or in China.

              Product Description

Edible pockets are a wonderful way to enclose food – for appetizers, breakfasts, lunches, picnics, casual suppers and desserts. Edible Pockets for Every Meal has been a nitty gritty® best-seller since 1994, bringing together a huge collection of edible pocket recipes from around the world. Whether called dumplings, turnovers, pasties, calzones, empanadas, piroshki, boreks, quesadillas, knishes, pot stickers or samosas, edible pockets are universal.

This newly revised and updated cookbook has lots of recipes for savory fillings made from poultry, meat, seafood, cheese, vegetables and herbs; sweet fillings made with fruit, nuts, chocolate and cream cheese; ready-made wrappers and wrappers made from yeast and pastry dough. There is also extensive information about ingredients, food pairing suggestions and equipment – even a section on leftovers.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I was amazingly surprised by this book:.......2007-05-14

I purchased this book as a quick way to make tasty healthy lunches for my husband to take to work. I found many very delicious filling recipes, which I have prepared and enjoyed myself. I also found a wide variety of wrapper recipes as a scrumptious variation for the fillings. It also has a selection of ready-made wrappers that you can purchase in your grocery store. I'm sure you will enjoy this delightful book.

              2 out of 5 stars I can't recommend this book.......2002-02-19

The strongest part of Edible Pockets is the various dough recipes. I've tried only a couple, but they worked. I did have to adapt the process to working dough with a stand-alone mixer. I didn't mind, but in a book that seems aimed at the complete novice, it's surprising that German doesn't address this popular alternative to bread machine and totally manual approaches.

My biggest complaint, though, is the filling recipes. Have you ever made tuna salad as usual for sandwiches and wondered how it would work if heated? Probably not, but German recommends this in the "tuna and cheese" filling and I was sucker enough to try it. For the record, celery just enough off crisp to be soggy is not a wonderful texture. And the cooking directions for fillings are misleading, as another reviewer has pointed out. An example is the "Cornish Pasty Filling," which was already well on its way to mush at half the hour's cooking time prescribed. In general, most fillings lack moisture and make for a mighty dry pocket.

German's directions for assembling the pockets are also at fault.
It's nice to know one can roll out the pastry to 1/8", but there are plenty of fillings that work best with a thicker-sided pocket. German does mention the possibility of letting the yeast-dough pockets rise before baking but fails to point out that the fillings must be at room temperature if this is going to happen. I also wonder why she is so keen on using pressing molds for calzones and other standard pockets. Unless you are cooking for an army, crimping with fingers seals the pockets just dandy.

When German says "If you have leftovers ... try using them as pocket fillings," she hits the nail on the head. If you have access to a toaster oven at work, her book helps provide a tasty lunch solution. Throw away the second half of the book, though, and dream up your own fillings.

              4 out of 5 stars Genuinely Addictive.......2000-04-03

My copy of this unpretentious little book is rapidly getting dog-eared. If the recipes weren't so very good, my family would surely be dog-tired of pies and turnovers by now, because I can't seem to stop making them! I literally had to start decorating my productions so that we could distinguish the three or four kinds we usually have on hand.

The book has two parts, one on wrappers, and one on fillings. Wrappers are further subdivided into yeasted, pastry, and ready-made wrappers. Fillings are split into Savoury, Vegetarian Savoury, and Sweet. I have no sweet tooth whatsoever, so I can't comment on the sweet fillings, but of the fifteen or twenty savoury fillings I've made so far, there has only been one dud.

              So why only four stars?

              1) The section on pastry wrappers could be a little longer, with more instruction on the often-devilish details of pastry-making.

              2) I like my fillings to have interesting textures. Ms. German seems to prefer puréeing everything.

              3) She has a tendency to overcook fillings (astonishing comment, coming from a Brit!)

              4) She has a fondness for frozen vegetables.

The last three quibbles are obviously easily rectified by adjusting the recipes to your taste.

Highlights: Spicy Asian Chicken, Chinese Orange Beef, Piroshki, and both of the empanada recipes.

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your bread machines!

5 out of 5 stars The key word here is "Fine".......2007-03-26

If you want to truely refine or up grade your woodworking skills, buy this book! The editors of Fine Woodworking are among,if not "the", leading comtributers to the art of woodworking today.

                3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2004-10-20

This isn't a bad book but it,s clearly a load of dated articles stuck together in an attempt to teach those who wish to make drawers & boxes a little something that in my opinion takes a long time to truely master. It's suggested in the book how easy it is to make dovetails, I've been making kitchens for years and it takes a long time to learn what you really NEED to know about these things. Take it from me it's easy to talk the talk.
There are better books out there that cover this subject in a more informative and enjoyable manner, try any of Jim Tolpin's woodworking books and you,ll see what I mean.

                5 out of 5 stars Classic Treatises.......2002-01-17

Some of the very best from the early years of Fine Woodworking Magazine by some of the Titans of the Seventies. These techniques are as fresh and informative today as they were when they were written.

5 out of 5 stars One of FWW's Best of the "Best Of" Series.......2000-04-25

40+ reprinted articles from Fine Woodworking magazine by such masters as Tage Frid, Ian Kirby, Mark Duginske, Jim Cummins and many others.

                General subject matter includes:

Joinery -- box joint jig, blind finger joints, plate joinery, tapered sliding dovetails, hand dovetails.

Boxes -- bandsawn, box design, bookmatching boards for.

Carcases -- European style cabinets, blanket chests, open, stereo cabinets.

Drawers -- general how-to, bottoms, making your own hardware, miters/tape/glue, panels for lids.

Miscellany -- drawer stop ideas, hanging doors, panel cutting, french fitting.

All in all, this is a well rounded, authoritative and tremendously helpful volume for the advanced amateur cabinetmaker. I have personally used many of the techniques described herein on my own projects with much success and am all the better craftsman for it.

                Highly recommended.

                Book Description

Married to Benito Mussolini's favorite daughter Edda, Galeazzo Ciano was a brilliant, ambitious and ruthless young Italian. Throughout his period in office Ciano kept a diary so detailed and revealing that both Mussolini and Hitler sought to impound and destroy it. The diary was smuggled out of Italy by Edda, who sought unsuccessfully to trade it for Ciano's life. The diary was later acquired by the American spy, Allen W. Dulles (later head of the CIA) and published in full in the Chicago Daily News. It remains one of the classic insider accounts of the workings of the Fascist and Nazi governments. Ciano's glamorous, violent, and promiscuous life was acted out at the highest levels of European politics and society. There has never been a biography of him in English: this is one gripping read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a sorry personality.......2007-05-29

I had some respect for Ciano before I read this, thinking he was the conscience of the Italian people. In getting to know Ciano by reading this book I realized that he was a mirrow image of IL Duce, including the womanizing part. His wife, Duce's daughter, was just as vain and an equally sorry figure. The author does a splendid job of researching old documents, talking to some of the older survivors and friends for first hand info.

5 out of 5 stars WOW. this is one of the most fascinating stories of World War 2.......2007-02-06

This is truly one of the most disturbing stories in World War 2. Ciano would become the epitome of everything hated in Italy. He would claim responsibility for the invasion of Albania and Greece and blamed for some of the worst defeats in Italy's history. Much of this is undeserved as Mussolini was calling many of the shots and the fall out between the two became apparent. Had Ciano been stronger and not captured under the personality cult of Mussolini the break would have been bigger and he would have opposed the war shattering the Duce ideas of a strong Italian army. The diaries that Ciano wrote would be key aspects of Nuremberg and both the allies and axis sought to acquire them. The story of the acquisition is heart wrenching and Edda Ciano's bravery is truly remarkable. What she went through from the execution of her husband to the estrangement of her father Mussolini was simply amazing. This is a must read for those who want to understand how World War 2 unfolded and the war that Italy played. It is a well written biography and truly a great addition to the historiography.

4 out of 5 stars Good background for Ciano's diary.......2003-12-06

Moseley has written a readable and well researched book on the life of the enigmatic Count Ciano. It is certainly the first comprehensive study of Ciano to appear in English. Ciano is worthy of the attention of anyone interested in Twentieth Century Europe, diplomacy, or World War II. Moseley does a good job of revealing Ciano's evolution from a blind follower of Mussolini to active and effective foil. There can be little doubt that in anything less than an unrestricted dictatorship, Ciano's efforts to keep Italy out of WWII would have succeeded. In the end Ciano's undisguished contempt of the Nazi Heirarchy cost him his life. I recommend this book as a precursor to reading Ciano's diary.

                5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2003-11-24

This is a superb read and Mr Mosely coveres an intensely complex period with majesty and skill. Here and there it is a bit difficult who the subject is of a sentence, as the relative pronoun sometimes doesn't come after the immediately preceding subject of a sentence, but that happens rarely. Mr Moseley's reads like a thriller, but at the same time is a thoroughly researched, critical reading of a tragic, through fascinating period of history. I cannot recommend this book more highly for anyone interested obviously in history, but also for those interested in human behviour and our ability to deceive and contradict ourselves. Do read!

3 out of 5 stars Very good, could have been better.......2000-08-04

This is a good book and Mr. Moseley is to be congratulated on a decent job. He has done his research and provided a vivid account of Ciano and the people around him. I do not give this book five stars, however, because it needs editing. It seems in some places Mr. Moseley loses his strong narrative as he relates diary entry after diary entry - seemingly with little connection. Also, the book could have used a glossary containing the names of the principal players in the Italian fascist government. These faults lie not with Mr. Moseley as much as with his editor/publisher. Nevertheless, I rcommend this book as one that provides a fascinating slice of WWII history.

Barry Gifford's father, Rudy Winston, was considered a "good man to know" in the wild and woolly Chicago of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. His list of friends and acquaintances included everyone from the mayor of Chicago and actress Dorothy Lamour to characters with monikers like Willie "the Hero" Nero and Arnold "Suitcase Solly" Banks. To his son, however, he was practically a stranger. Rudy Winston died when Barry Gifford was 12 years old, and Phantom Father is Gifford's reconstruction of a time and a man he never really knew.

Rudy Winston was born in Vienna and moved to the United States when he was 8 years old. As an adult, he ran a combination liquor store and drugstore that doubled as a drop-off point for stolen goods, drugs, and other contraband. Although his family was based in Chicago, he had places in Miami, New York, and Acapulco, and it was widely rumored that he performed the occasional hit for his gangster friends. Even before his death in 1958, Rudy had been something of a phantom in his son's life. According to Gifford's grandmother, his father didn't even speak to him until he was 5 years old; then Rudy walked out on the family when Barry was 8. Much of the material here that deals with Rudy Winston first appeared in Gifford's earlier book, A Good Man to Know. What sets The Phantom Father apart are the unsentimental portraits of family members, family friends, and the various odd characters who passed through Barry Gifford's childhood.

                  3 out of 5 stars A loving father, a bewildered son........2004-03-07

After reading the two fictional accounts of gangsters by Stephen Hunter, I thought I might read about a real one for a change. I bought this book primarily as the pictures showed the man as a normal human being, more resembling the government men in the old movies than a killer.

It is touted as a 'memoir' but it is merely short remembrances of the author about himself, not so much about his 'good' father. His note about the Japanese form shosetsu being described as "a piece of autobiography or a set of memoirs, somewhat embroidered and colored but essentially nonfiction."

While shosetsu contains elements of fiction, it is "a rather more flexible and generous and catholic term than 'novel'." This book belongs to this genre and should be approached as such, he writes.

Why should so-called historians get away with embroidering and elaborating on the facts and present this as nonfiction. Our local historian does just that constantly, and most folks believe that what he is writing is the truth.

This most-prolific writer does just that with his childhood remembrances. Seems to me he had a privileged and good life; maybe the father moved on to create another family, but he did not abandon or forget his firstborn son.

I just wish he had presented more of the humanness of Rudy Winston whose specialty was the liquor business (man, he would fit in here in Knoxville where the yuppie newcomers sit out on the sidewalk on Gay Street and drink hard liquor openly -- and get away with it).

He was a fine-looking man, and his son is handsome enough to be in one of those movies he has collaborated on with David Lynch.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps his best book.......1999-07-21

Gifford's fiction is often an unholy pastiche of styles and devices, and this technique is perfectly suited for his memoir PHANTOM FATHER... I highly recommend it. Deserves a space on a short bookshelf that includes Angela's Ashes and The Liars' Club.

                    Book Description

Enterprise modeling is the primary tool used in business re-engineering. Historically, the number one problem with enterprise modeling has been the lack of formalism. Getting Results with the Object-Oriented Enterprise Model tackles this dilemma head-on and prescribes a formal methodology based on object technology. This book will help create a reliable enterprise model by assessing the enterprise's current operations as well as its future operations. Developing the model within the context of object-orientation will provide an ideal framework as each object will represent a behavior that is analogous to the issues addressed within the model and the enterprise itself. Getting Results with the Object-Oriented Enterprise Model will then help the reader prioritize and execute the changes suggested by the model. The authors synthesize paradigms from conceptual modeling, information theory, computer theory and business theory to develop a comprehensive and formal description of the enterprise that works. By combining their considerable expertise in both IT and business theory, the authors are able to define the rigorous methodology needed to successfully model any enterprise.
