Not so fundamentally sound..........2007-03-25

In 2005, I began reading Isiah Thomas' book as part of my dissertation research and I found Coach Thomas to be a good storyteller capable of blending his experiences in basketball and business.

Among the highlights of his book, Thomas (2001) shares his Indiana University mantra which echoed qualities that every individual could aspire for: "self-development, preparation, concentration, and execution." Thomas added that these characteristics were incorporated into the coaching drills and programs that he participated in during his time at Indiana University so as to teach "how to (use a skill) "what to (deciding between two or more skills), and when to (knowing the actual moment to use the developed skill)" (Paye, 1996). Thomas (2001) also leaves his readers with this thought, character is usually found in "unconventional places" as opposed to right in front of us.

Overall, I rate this book as an average read since the author only dabs into his core topics (business, basketball, coaching) without actually sharing concrete information which readers can apply to their everyday lives. It is basically a book of compiled life stories which Thomas try's to share with his audience.

My Review.......2004-02-08

This book I think personally relates to me and many others because it is about how to succeed when expectations are lowered by others... and mainly yourself. This book dares the reader to not only dream a bold dream but also how to keep fighting for it... despite mistakes and barriers. What really stands out was that Isiah spoke of the having a "Root" and how important it is to stary true to it and how that would make the difference in success in business or any goal we have in life.

As far as Isiah's life goes... what I admire most was that where he came from, his basketball acheivements and the fact that he had a social consicence. His accomplishments dispells the myth that business sucess lacks compasson when it fact it can make one climb higher, reach farther and fight harder in all phases of life.

This book describes what it takes to cross multiple socioeconomic levels in one generation. If you want an easy to read, thorough description of how to exercise the "freedom of the will" to rise above the present and grasp the possible, then buy this book.

I am an executive, who has a BSEE and an MBA. I've read many books on: leadership styles, management techniques, innovation, power, etc... Compared to those books, this book does not disclose some new technique that has not been covered by others, perhaps in far greater detail. It does something far better than that. This book describes what it took Isiah Thomas to raise himself up from the lowest socioeconomic level in America.

I can identify with Thomas' struggles. When I was 7 I lived in Chicago's West Side (near Humboldt Park). At that time, my parents were poor, but they taught me the same lessons as Dear (Thomas' mom) taught Thomas.

The lessons seem simple to somebody at a higher socioeconomic level: set a vision (dream) of where you want to be in N (5, 10, 20, whatever) years; commit yourself to accomplishing the tasks that will take you through the path that leads to your vision; use your will to stay focused on that path, do not let yourself get distracted from that path by "quick and easy fast buck options" that only sidetrack or derail you; and build yourself a network that will help you stay on track to win.

However, the above is extremely, painfully difficult if you live day-to-day worrying about your: next meal, walk home from school, and all the other things that plague a poor inner city kid.

This book is an outstanding motivational item for any child that is facing "the streets" (i.e. the obstacles Isiah faced. It lets them know that their struggle can be conquered. It provides, through detailed descriptions, the techniques used by one of the conquerers. Those techniques help a child, teenager, or perhaps, even an adult, rise above their current state. I know, because Thomas is not the only one to come out of the tornado. Many others have done the same, using a similar set of techniques.

BTW, if you want to read about the CBA, read "Life on the Rim: A Year in the Continental Basketball Association" by David Levine. Thomas' book is not about one mistake in an executive's life.

If you want to read a lifting, exercise in the freedom of the will to succeed, buy this book... or give it as a gift to somebody that could really, really use it. I have.

A great book for those who are starting out.......2003-02-04

I am sick of these silly reviews which harp on the CBA bankruptcy, which Isiah acknowledges as a failure. What they did not acknowledge is that this "50+ year old" league was on the brink of failure when he bought it, and would have failed earlier had he not, plain and simple. This is a great story for someone (like most of our inner city youth/adults, especially those who grew up in the 1970s) who is struggling with their circumstances, yet striving to make something of themselves and those around them.

The CBA critics are probably the same who regard Jack Welch, as the ultimate Corporate God, yet fail to acknowledge him as what he has clearly shown himself, a self-aggrandizing, greedy, materialistic, adulter. Isiah, unethical? I have not seen him take the 5th and refuse to discuss his mistakes. What about these guys: Ken Lay, Scott Sullivan, Bernie Ebbers, Andy Fastow? Hmm....

Sorry boys, I will stick with Isiah and his book. He never tries to portray himself as a victim, yet acknowledges his mistakes. What would you call this person? I think we would call this person a human being. Make this book a part of your library and share it with your kids.

Absurd Exercise in Self-Congratulation.......2001-12-03

There are two possibilities:
1. Thomas wrote this BEFORE he ruined the CBA and bailed on the organization to coach in the NBA. So maybe his recommendations on life and business aren't ones you want to follow.
2. Thomas wrote this AFTER he ruined the CBA and bailed on the organization to coach in the NBA. In this case, he's sadly blind to his lacking business skills, after taking the CBA to bankruptcy with his faulty business plans and generally greedy, self-absorbed behavior.
This book is only interesting in that it shows how people can be so self-delusional. Don't buy this.

A patchwork quilt pattern book.......2005-08-24

I ordered this quite recently and to be honest found it pretty disappointing.

It was of course written in the mid 1980s so do not expect any of the modern techniques of rotary cutting and paper piecing. The instructions would be barely enough to get a beginner going as they are written in text with no how to illustrations, but they are of the most basic and quite old fashioned, requiring you to use templates to cut out each piece individually with scissors. Only the briefest detail is given on how to machine piece and how to hand piece using a running stitch and the final instructions for binding the quilts with four separate pieces of fabric, one for each side, added on consecutively, were never good practice at any time in the history of quiltmaking. The variety of patterns is quite good but unfortunately there are some eight pointed star blocks including Lemoyne Star which have been drawn incorrectly as four patch blocks.

There are no pictures of finished quilts, even hand drawn. This book was written in the days before everybody had computers and although the illustrations of the blocks are good and clear what you get is instructions for 27 quilts all exactly the same size, with the same size border and the same block layout and no consideration given for the different kinds of patterns included in the book.

Compared with the quality of today's quilt books I think Dover should consider withdrawing this one as it doesn't hold a candle to most of the quilt pattern books available today or indeed others they published around the same time as this one.

I would recommend that any beginner considering a new book avoid this one and consider perhaps Lynne Edwards's Sampler Quilt series and perhaps one of the Jinny Beyer books, which will give plenty of information and lots of patterns, and which are well illustrated and beautifully produced with clear illustrations of work in progress, patterns and finished quilt galleries.

Traditional Patterns.......2002-04-06

The patterns (as the title of the book indicates) are the traditional ones(Ohio Star, Eight Point Star, Clay's Choice) that more experienced quilters will already be famliar with, but it does have those nifty plastic templates (four of them--you'd be surprised how much you can do with so little)which in my opinion are worth the money all by themselves. If you're a real beginner and the patterns are new to you, I would recommend you combine this with Laura Erlich's Complete Idiot's Guide, which I just LOVE. She gives really clear simple instructions on how to piece together the same designs in this book, which this is a little weak on, if you don't already know what you're doing.

Easy to Make -- Yes they are!.......1999-12-28

The pictures and descriptions are easy to follow. The templates are heavy plastic to stand up to the many hours of cutting I will put them through! The patterns included in this book will keep quilters of all levels busy. Make one block or an entire quilt - the directions for both are included.

A nicely illustrated journal to record the heartfelt emotions of a grandmother for a grandchild. It covers a variety of information on the subject's life and feelings. A great keepsake. Note: Some of the content might be more suitable for a "traditional" family. I found that some of the questions might be uncomfortable for some family situations.

This book presents a comprehensive history of the mathematicians, mathematical academic life, and mathematical trends present in Poland during the first half of the 20th century. The book takes interest in the sudden flourishing of Polish mathematical thought during this period, and chronicles the extensive contributions of Polish mathematicians to topology, set theory, and analysis (functional analysis). It attempts to explain the conditions which led to the intellectual prosperity, and the conditions which allowed it to endure during the ravages of the two World Wars. The author presents detailed, often first-hand accounts, however, at points he becomes a bit monotonous as he tries to honor everyone from that time period. Overall, it is a good source to learn about the mathematical environment in Poland at the time, and to learn of the lives of such great mathematicians as Banach, Mazurkiewicz, Zaremba, Sierpinski, Kuratowski, Steinhaus, Knaster, Mostowski, and others.
