Creating a New Life.......2001-09-06
A good friend gave this tape series to me as a gift at a time when I was considering relocating from Cleveland to Chicago for a new job. I didn't listen to it at first as I was "too busy" with my move. It turns out that my new employer had sugar coated the position, and that it was nothing like it had been represented. Days into the job, I was depressed. I started listening to Schoeniger's tapes. And I loved it! Gary Schoeniger has a calm confidence that helped me to open my mind to a different approach, a new attitude and a better feeling about myself. I realized that it was my talent this new employer sought and that others would want it too. I decided that despite a lot of fear and anxiety, I would quit (after only 4 weeks) and market myself as a litigation consultant. Using Schoeniger's techniques, I started cold calling, and now I have a successful business working with companies on their business conflicts. The Best Basic Book of Kids' Sweaters.......2006-09-26
I have made a half-dozen completely original sweaters based on the patterns in this book. It's the perfect diving board from which you can get creative and make sweaters that are your own design, using the intarsia and lace patterns that Kate Buller suggests, or make your own. Bright, fresh patterns and clear instructions, and even includes instructions on knitting techniques (such as short rows, intarsia, lace, etc.). The motifs and suggestions are marvelous---quirky to gorgeous to clever to oh-my-gosh-how-did-she-DO-that!
The only downside is that there's not much instruction about how to scale the patterns using different yarns and gauges, but for the intermediate knitter, it's easy enough to figure out.
I got this book on a whim, and am so glad I did.
Never Buy Another Knitting Pattern Again!.......2005-03-17
This is really a terrific book. First, you pick the style of garment you'd like to make (pull-over, open front, etc.) and the kind of neck line (rounded, v-neck, hooded.) Then you can customise your sweater using a variety of intarsia patterns (even some great ones for boys, such as space and pirate themes), cast-on techniques (including a great ruffle), band/cuff techniques (more than just the basic k1p1 repetition), and even some fun cast-off techniques. The book even offers help with color choice. I have found no errors so far and have not had difficulty adapting the instructions to yarns other than worsted weight yarn (which is the weight called for by the author.) My only wish for this book would be that it include more intarsia motifs.
The Ultimate--but not for beginners.......2004-07-28
Wow! I'm never going to buy another knitting pattern book again. This book is exactly what I've been searching for for the past year. It includes a number of types of sweaters (v-neck/cardigan/etc.) for ages from infants on up to school-age kids. In the back is an awesome directory of stitches for borders (lace, ribbing, etc.) and patterns for any kind of motif you could think of (from skull and crossbones to trains to zoo animals). You can mix and match sweater styles with motifs or edges to get a great sweater. Also included are guides for each size showing you where to place motifs if you choose to use them.
There is so much to choose from here, including a few hat and bag patterns, that you won't get bored ever. The possibilities are endless. However, I would not recommend this book to a new knitter. Get a few projects under your belt before working from this book.

Although I purchased this book specifically because Susan Klein grew up on Martha's Vineyard (an island I adore), I fell in love with it for the childhood she describes. Many of the short stories (some only a page) describe the idyllic childhood of days gone by - when a 5 year old could ride her new bike unsupervised, and older children formed teams to play strategic games for hours on end. But Susan Klein does a remarkable job of encapsulating all that growing up entails - the real and the imagined pains of childhood, as well as the joy. She touches upon so many subjects that you might mistakenly think it is a heavy read - broken families, religion, the challenge of making ends meet. But mostly it is a collection of stories that will warm your heart, and sometimes make you laugh outloud. Now, if only there were a sequel so I would know what happened to her best friend David...
Wonderful stories to remind us all of childhood innocence........1999-01-21
This book reminded me of my own childhood, even though it took place in another generation and very far from my home town. It is a book everyone can relate to.
Klein's way with words and descriptions is incredible! She has had such intriging experiences, such as her father leaving them at such a young age, her intruduction to bigotry and segregation, and such wonderful happenings on "her own little island."
She talks of making jam, riding on the "flying horses", and of cook-outs on the beach (with at least one lobster per person).
It truely is a beautifully written book and I reccomend it to anyone who would like to be transported to another time and place for just a short time.

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!

I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

Challenging Textbook, full of practical Excel techniques.......2004-12-01
Best for an MBA textbook or very dedicated self-study for quantitatively oriented business analysts. You learn a lot of Excel skills and how to produce practical tables, charts and other exhibits in Excel.
Using traditional statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, Statistica, etc. makes the teaching and learning simpler. Using specialized software is the way to go if you are going to learn heavy-duty statistics (PhD research or Stats major). However, if you are an MBA student, you probably will not have access to specialized statistical software, since the jobs for which that is cost-justified generally are staffed by stats majors. Thus, learning to do a great analysis job using Excel is beneficial in the job-market "afterlife".
This book isn't an "easy read," as you will need to work carefully *all* the examples to really understand what is going on, especially with the early chapters. A common problem is skimming over the examples, then running into a wall in later chapters. If you really study the heck out of each example, things seem to go well. The book comes with the data files for all the examples. The instructor's edition comes with excellent solutions for all the problems. The author really knows how to make Excel do anything!
I earned an MBA many years ago from a top ten MBA program and worked in business after that, including owning my own business. Later I returned to school for a phd degree and now teach stats in a b-school.

I am using this book for a MBA class at a Top 20 school. Our class is focused on students who have not had any formal background in statistics. This book lacks in depth explanations for its problems. Its solutions manual is marginally helpful because it also does not explain how it reaches the answers.
Granted this book is mean to be used with excel, but it relies too much on Excel to do the computation. Thus the student is limited in building a strong basis in statistics.
Unfortunately, my whole MBA class is going through is agony with this book.
