Each chapter includes a hypothetical case study and an introduction highlighting key ethical points; two academic essays; and a real-life case study. Questions for discussion accompany the essays and case studies. The author has also included a general introduction to ethical issues and an overview of ehtical theory; a section on institutionalizing ethics (discussing ethics officers/programs/ codes etc.); and appendices providing excerpts from important classic contributions to ethical theory, and from relevant Canadian law.

Effective, but tests your patience.......2004-03-11

Essentially, a quality reference book. I'm a remodeler and general contractor in Madison, WI. I've used this book to establish budgetary figures for homes I buy, renovate and flip. Being accurate with this book means being patient and flipping back and forth to find every little detail, but the time pays off - Means brings me in at or just above my actual costs. Couldn't ask for much more, except the layout according to the CSI Master Format doesn't make it easy to find all the right items and numbers. Also, Means doesn't allow for things like the style, height or complexity of the roof when determining cost to install shingles - so just be careful and remember to add in that contingency at the end. And don't forget to add local sales tax, if you have to pay it. (In my opinion, this book is better than Means Residential Repair and Remodel guide - that book gives you less options. However, it is organized they way you might layout a project. It's also easier to get a final number, but you defintely have to up your contingency factor because it's not as accurate.) If you're a remodeler, buy Detailed Residential Costs and use it - it'll save you time and money in the long run.

2007 Edition: Excellent reference for budgeting or estimating.......2006-12-28

The 2006 Edition is a worthwhile buy and pays for itself quickly. I wish I had bought it much earlier in my home budgeting process. The information is well organized in a user-friendly manner. It even has cost adjustment factors for hundreds of cities. This should help you to be prepared somewhat before you start negotiating with builders and contractors.

Excellent book if you are building your own home.......1999-08-25

This is an excellent book for estimating the costs involved in building a new home. It provides enough detail to get a good idea on costs. It is not as detailed as some of the other books out there but for a person like myself it has proved to be an invaluable tool. And it is easy enough to use as opposed to some of the other books out there.

Martha Ann's Quilt for Queen Victoria was an inspiring story that reminds us to never give up on our dreams and also to dream BIG and leave the rest to God. As a freed slave, it seemed highly unlikely that Martha Ann would ever be in the company of Queen Victoria. But after 50 years of dreaming, PREPARATION and ridicule, Martha Ann got just want she wanted -an audience with the queen. Not only is the story true, it is inspirational to everyone not just children. Kudos to Kyra Hicks for bringing the story to light and inspiring us all to dream BIG!

Martha Ann's story is not only an inspiration to all, it is also a true story. A story reminding us that with determination, hard work, and confidence even the most seemingly impossible dreams can come true.

Born about 1817 in eastern Tennessee, Martha Ann Ricks was a slave. Her father was a traveling preacher who learned about the American Colonization Society, an organization that assisted blacks in beginning again in a new place - Liberia.

When Martha Ann was 12, her family had finally saved enough money to buy their freedom and they moved to Liberia. Once there Martha Ann was able to go to school where she joyfully learned how to read. At home her mother taught her to sew. However, these happy times came to an end all too soon when African Fever took the lives of her mother, father, and sisters.

As an adult and a married woman, Martha Ann went to the market with her husband where she saw British naval ships patrolling the coast to stop slave catchers from kidnaping blacks. So impressed was Martha Ann by the ships and Queen Victoria for sending them that she determined to personally thank the Queen for protecting her people.

An impossible hope? Yes, but Martha Ann fulfilled her dream.

What a privilege it was to read Kyra's latest work to my 5 year old. She absolutely loved it, asking so many questions and commenting on the beauty of the book itself. This book was such a treat for both me and her! It's educational, uplifting and sweet. I encourage my daughter to always reach beyond the stars and this book reinforces that. We will read it again and again and share it with others! Thank you Kyra.

Great book!.......2007-05-10

This is a really interesting and unique children's book based on a true story. My children were really, really interested in the historical aspects. My kids are 5 and were very much into the story, asking a lot of questions about the history of it. I found it stimulated great conversation about serious topics.

I think this book is great! It's packed with history and photograghs-most of them in color. The quilts are beautiful with templates and sewing hints that are easy to understand. Patchwork, applique, log cabin-there is a little of everything.

Much more than a story of captivity..........2005-06-19

Without blowing his own horn, the author exposes how to be a good human being. The story is also captivating, but what is behind the story is the good part. Tom Sutherland is an amazing human being, to have undergone captivity at the hands of terrorists, yet come out of it a better person. Jean Sutherland's parts fill in the corners well, both write very well.

Helpful in understanding the ethnic complexity of Lebanon........1996-06-27

I was fortunate enough to hear Thomas Sutherland speak almost immediately after his release, and several times since. He has always been consistent in his praise for Terry Anderson, his acceptance of his internment as "his own risk," his lack of bitterness for 6.5 years away from family and his support for the people of Lebanon. The book genuinely reflects the man.

Candid look at old Savannah.......2002-12-01

Enthralling essays about Savannah's noble and oft ignoble past! Includes essays about "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's days in Savannah, Bobby Jones time there in 1930, and a 1950s Elvis Presley concert that stirred the status quo and bemused the local media. Along the way we watch the city grow from an outpost carved in the vast wilderness to a modern city, see the rise of Savannah Jazz, and look on as a teenage Ted Turner learns to sail in Savannah waters. Also included are in-depth profiles about Savannah's lest than glorious past such as "Corruption Savannah Style", which looks at the vices of Georgia's mother city during the first half of the 20th Century. From the colonial era and James Oglethorpe to the 1970s, this book lays bare old Southern clichés and in doing so is great reading.
