More here than meets the eye........2003-09-30

Sometimes a book grabs my attention because of the overall look of the cover, the title and the graphics. This book with it's interesting title and strong purple cover caught my eye and I had to explore further.
It's not a real long book, but it is filled with some solid insight and advice.
I'd recommend it to any in a sales or business environment. Self employed entrepreneurs as well as corporate managers would gain something from a reading.

Each chapter has a short story that makes a point about a topic and then a discussion of that topic follows. There are quotes on the bottom of each page and several pages of quotes at the end.

What are some of the things I gained an insight into?

Time. We all have the same amount but we don't all use it the same, an interesting look at how we deal with time.

Creativity. What is the difference between being creative and simply following the crowd? How can we "steal" ideas yet still be creative?

Learning. This was perhaps the most important chapter. Do we really learn to learn or do we just memorize facts and figures? How learning, continual learning, is so important.

Supporters. The people we surround ourselves with.

Does the idea of an "honest" thief sound like a contradiction? An oxymoron? Perhaps, but the author here makes a clear cut and compelling argument about using the foundation set by those before us to climb even higher and reach our goals.

A very strong recommendation.

Balancing supply and demand.......2005-05-25

Questions for the executive team that merit concern: What about inventory? If a plant is schedule to build a 100 unit but 140 appear will there be enough inventory to satisify the unexpected demand? In the reverse, when demand fails should the plant continue building inventory? What are the alternatives existing on the manufacturing floor? When orders fail to appear workers and equipment are idle unless alternative work is found. When demand exceeds supply, can more supply be created through overtime or outsourcing? How are customers affected? "When actual demand is underestimated, management becomes the traffic cop, directing the company's limited output to certain customers and withholding it from others."

"Knowing that forecasts will never match actual demand, except on rare occassion, master schedulers understand that they must be flexible in shifting capacity and materials from one period to another. They must know which customer will allow a delivery split over two or more periods. "A valid master plan is one in which the material due dates equal the material need dates, and the planned capacity equals the required capacity."

Manufacturing Production Scheduling is balancing Demand (Sales Forecasts, Customer Orders, Branch Warehouses, Interplant orders, and Custom/Special Orders) with Supply (Inventory,Equipment, Labor, Facilities, Time, and Money). When a company has more demand for it product it can 1. Increase the supply of the product by getting more material and resources 2. Decrease the demand by turning away or rescheduling some of the demand. Likewise, if there is more supply of the product than demand the company has two choices: 1. Increase demand by energizing the sales force, run a promotion, or discount price. 2. Decrease the supply of the product or material/capacity needed to produce it by cutting back production, people, and equipment.

The supply side can have a shock absorber. Inventory is a shock absorber. Another type of supply shock absorber is flexibility in the manufacturing chain which allows the company to alter plant floor activity to satifisy demand flunctations with severe disruptions.

The demand side can have a shock absorber. Flexiblity can extend to sales and marketing through promotions and discounts. The customer can be swayed to cooperate with the demand and supply balance through sales and discount or sales inducements.

A company must decide which side of the demand and supply balance to focus on: "sell the products manufacturing makes" or "build the products that sales sells." Once decided the company moves to the task of balancing product supply through demand management, sales and operation planning, supply management, and master scheduling.

Capacity planning addresses the question: "Do we or will we have enough equipment, enough people, enough materials, and enough time to meet the sales and operations plans as currently written?"

Demand managment manages all demands for the product and ensures the master scheduler is aware of them. It encompasses the activities of forecasting, order entry, order promising, branch warehouse requirements, interplant orders, and service part requirements.

Supply management manages replenishment quantities created in response to anticipated or firm demands for the product. It encompasses supply planning in pre-sales and operations planning, rationing out the production plan to the manufacturing facility, coordinating finished goods inventory, manage production to satisify customer demand, establishing competitive lead times, and counseling with plant master schedules.

Fairly comprehensive and EZ to understand.......2001-03-24

One of few 600-pages book that is easy to understand, and a "pleasure" to read. The book is well organized, and fairly comprehensive. I was a novice in manufacturing concepts and this book helped me gain significant understanding of manufacturing planning concepts. The only subject that is lacking is a brief chapter on modern supply chain planning software packages that have become essential tools these days. The book is very expensive, but IMHO it's worth every penny if you're trying to learn about the subject.

Comprehensive and wonderfully written........1998-09-18

John F. Proud has given us the definitive text on master scheduling. He has turned what should be a dry subject into 500+ pages that are thorough, enlightening, and suprisingly readable.

Contents include the mechanics of master scheduling, managing the MPS in various manufacturing environments (make-to-stock, make-to-order, etc.), planning bills, finishing schedules, capacity planning, demand management, and system implementation. Key points are punctuated by a running fictional account of master scheduling in action -- with all the personalities and politics that bear on this essential task.

Proud presents the vast material in a logical and entertaining manner. Detailed computational examples are provided for many of the situations a master scheduler will face. Proud is not afraid to depart from standard APICS language or teachings when appropriate -- but he does clearly identify when he has done so. Perhaps most significant is his exceptional grasp of the human relations and management issues involved. He shows that master scheduling is more than just crunching numbers.

Highly recommended as preparation for the APICS Master Planning exam.

Great book-Out of print.......2007-05-29

This is a wonderful book for the advanced knitter. You can make about every sweater with any yarn you can dream of. The only down side is you have to be good at going back and forth between pages to fill out the pattern sheets. But if you have the patience, the results can be amazing.

Does much to demystify the process of pattern design.......2006-06-16

One of the major problems faced by knitters is getting their garments to fit properly. Patterns in books and magazine can be beautiful, garments made by following prefab instructions don't always fit the real life bodies for which they're intended. Many knitters eventually come to the realization that if they want something that really looks good, they're going to have to design it themselves. But designing a sweater can be an intimidating thing if you've never done it before. How much ease do you need? How do you shape the armholes and the neckline? The fact that there's MATH involved only makes it worse. That's where this book comes in.

"A Knitter's Template" makes the process much easier. Although there are some patterns included, they're not the reason to buy the book. The real meat lies in the introductory sections that deal with the nuts and bolts of design, fit, and pattern writing. The authors provide a basic set of instructions for knitting a garment with a few different style options and blank spaces where you plug in the stitch numbers and measurements that fit your gauge and size. They follow this with lots of charts that give you the numbers you need.

By and large, this is a great book. My first garment, a shell made with a ribbon yarn, turned out well enough that I'm now working on my second project, another shell with a few design differences. The reason that I gave these book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the book seemed a little disorganized and I sometimes found it difficult to find the specific information I needed. Also the charts are a little rigid in that the sizes are based on even numbers of inches. That can be a problem if you're an odd number size, or, for that matter, if your gauge runs, for example, 3.75 stitches per inch instead of 3.5 or 4, which is what the charts are set up for. Do you use the chart with the smaller gauge or the higher gauge? Which size do you use? There's a fudge factor here that can't really be eliminated, but I wish the authors had provided more information (and handholding) on how to deal with this. As for row gauge, if you're row gauge isn't the same as that given on the charts for your stitch gauge; you'll need to use the chart that does fit your row gauge. It can be confusing, but the authors do warn you about that.

"A Knitter's Template" is a very useful resource for designing your own garments, It's not the be-all and end-all of books on knitwear design, but it is a good place to start.

It's a Winner!.......2004-05-06

I rate this book right up there with The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns. One of the best tools yet! Kudos to Barry Klein, Laura Bryant and all the other contributors to this wonderful book. It is nice to see books that more advanced AND beginners can use equally.

There are gauge and measurement charts for a variety of yarns and pattern styles and garment sizes, pluse some basic well written patterns that allow for lots of embellishments and customization by the knitter.

Buy it and enjoy it! You won't be sorry.

When Colonel Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders up the San Juan Ridge in 1898, it was one of the most daring exploits of the Spanish-American War. A Truly Unique and Fascinating American Family.......2007-01-29

Completely understanding TR is impossible without considering his children, or his own childhood for that matter. These are the foci of the "The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War." TR was deeply influenced by his father, a wealthy and generous, many would claim great man whose most glaring defect and regret was what amounted to a buy out of his Civil War service obligation. TR called him the "greatest man I ever knew." Yet, in many respects TR spent the rest of his life attempting to overcome and reverse this blemish upon the family record through extraordinary patriotism and service. Leading at the apex of conflict and danger was the duty of a great and privileged family. This credo was embraced wholeheartedly by his children, which makes for fascinating reading. While some would argue this compulsion became excessive and detrimental, the Roosevelt's had no regrets and curiously embraced their family tragedies in the midst of great pain. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the death of the youngest, Quintin while flying patrol over German lines in WWI. On the other hand, if you are looking for an in depth look at any one or more of the children this book will not suffice. Indeed, the early chapters focus on TR's life leading up to WWI, while the latter chapters are largely dedicated to his offspring's activities in young adulthood, particularly those related to the Great War. There is little regarding TR's close and often tender relationship with his children during their childhood in the White House or at Sagamore Hill. As a result, while I greatly enjoyed this book, I was hoping for more breadth and insight into the children's upbringing and their lives after TR's death.

Excellent distillation of Roosevelt's last years.......2006-12-06

Renehan's accounting of the last years of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. is condensed and fascinating. Mostly covering 1898 and 1910-1919, the book provides insight into the southern New York high society of the early 20th century. Famous names, including Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, Cowles, and Coolidge, parade across the pages.

Nuggets include the mention of Harvard in that time as a conservative and pro-military bastion (compared to today's institution fighting military recruitment in court), Woodrow Wilson viewed as an appeaser, a coward, and an appointer of bigots in his administration (in contrast to a reputation as being a visionary negotiator), observation by Gen. George Patton that Theodore's eldest son, Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt III, was a courageous commander- but no soldier (both father and son won the Medal of Honor...a feat perhaps not matched by any other American family), and the contrast highlighted between Kaiser Wilhelm's non-combat patronage of his sons (during WWI) and the former president Roosevelt's sons participating in front line combat. Another interesting fact: three of Roosevelt's four sons died in military service--one killed in action, one dead of a heart attack a month after D-Day and one day before he was to be promoted to major general, and one a suicide). The fourth suffered from the long term effects of severe war wounds.

Roosevelt is also revealed as a founding father of the original progressive movement...born out of the Republican party, no less. "Progressive" used to mean advocating sensible capitalism through the restraint of unlimited power of large corporations (through the Sherman Act) and the promotion of sound environmental policy and conservation. It also demanded the U.S. government uphold its main role--that of national defense. This is in stark contrast to today's "progressive" thinking--complete rejection of market economics and corporations, radical environmentalism, and pacifism. Roosevelt must spin in his grave.

All in all a great primer of the former president. Makes you want to immediately run out and read more.

A giant of a man with a giant family .......2005-05-10

This is one of the best biographies of Theodore Roosevelt that I have ever read. It is interesting when you read this book and compare the legacy of the Roosevelt family and the Kennedy family. This is just my own opinion but I think the Roosevelt have more personality then all of the Kennedy family which is strange considering that the Roosevelt's are more overlooked.

Roosevelt was in effect the first of the modern politicians but still elements of the old school.

He was arrogant, a jingoist, and bombastic. He was also larger then life and an honest man in his own way. He also made sure that two of his sons served with the ground forces during WWI. That is something that cannot be said politicians today.

The primary obstacle to effective problem solving in any environment is that the people that need to be involved are not problem solving experts. Most have not been trained in the use of the basic problem solving tools nor trained in a structured problem solving process. Process Problem Solving provides an overview of these basic tools, with examples of their use, and an explanation of a logical problem solving process. The author also discusses typical problem solving traps that present obstacles whenever there is a problem to be resolved. Throughout the text, the author sprinkles "Problem Solving Truths" which are intended to reinforce key concepts and serve as learning aids.

Incorporating a variety of learning aids, Process Problem Solving encourages the reader to learn the concepts presented. Sproull uses the "learn, then apply" approach by beginning each chapter with "What You should Learn in this Chapter" to emphasize the major concepts to be presented. In each chapter, Sproull has incorporated illustrations, charts, and examples to explain the concepts in practical terms that may easily be transferred into practice. Each chapter concludes with a problem assignment, to provide practice in applying the concepts, and "What did you learn" which prompts the reader to express what has been learned.

After discussing the tools, their use and application, and the problem solving process, Sproull introduces the "Problem Analysis Flow (PAF) Chart" in Chapter 6. This chart is a new tool for use through the problem solving process. It guides the user through the process in a logical manner. When the PAF Chart is complete, the user should have all the necessary information necessary for corrective action.

The problem solving examples provided in the main text are supplemented by four case studies in the Appendix. Each case study contains a complete discussion of the problem solving process from the discovery of the problem through its analysis, using the PAF Chart supplemented by the tools described in the text, to its resolution. These case studies provide practical examples of the tools, techniques and concepts presented by the author.

Process Problem Solving is a practical text for learning and applying a practical problem solving process. Although intended for a manufacturing setting, the principles, tools, and techniques are equally applicable in a service industry.
