1901. Part Two of Two. With maps and illustrations. A loving son writes this life of his father, General Stevens, Army Engineer, and governor of Washington territory. After graduating at West Point, he served through the Mexican War, participating in several engagements and being wounded in the attack on Mexico City. He was then deployed to Washington with the U.S. Coast Survey in Washington until his appointment as governor of the territory. Besides his duties of Governorship, he surveyed the northern route for the railroad to the Pacific. His drastic measures to suppress disaffection with the Indians made him extremely unpopular, but he was elected territorial delegate to Congress and there defended his actions. He was appointed Colonel of 79th New York Volunteers (Highlanders) at the outbreak of the Civil War, and when eight companies mutinied after the First Battle of Bull Run, he took drastic measures to restore order. As a result he was promoted to Brigadier-General, participated in the Port Royal expedition and, then transferred to Virginia to lead the division at Newport News. Really fine!.......1999-04-18

Here's a poet who was a gunner in a B-29 over Tokyo, and who kept a diary during his months on Saipan. Really fine, really worth reading, for the unvarnished thoughts of the man who kept the journal. Unlike most such journals, it hasn't been edited for publication, though there are a few of Ciardi's own afterthoughts.

A wonderful read, the author's insight that in war, we are not "killing machines", but human beings. John Ciardi writes about experiencing fear, loneliness, despair, and hope. His diary is but a small sample of the soldiers and pilots on Saipan who were so close to the Japanese homeland and no end to the war in sight.

Cifelli's biography of Ciardi is a carefully wrought story of an illustrious life in poetry that should interest anyone who reads or studies American literature. John Ciardi was an interesting man who had to buck the ethnic prejudices of his time. The adventures of his life in poetry are well worth reading. Edward Cifelli is an skilled writer of this poet's life and he has done an excellent job of weeding out the truth and balancing his portrayal so that we love Ciardi, even while we see his human foibles. He creates emapthy for his subject without going overboard, so that his words are thoroughly believable and offer a measured truth of the man and his fine accomplishements.An excellent portrait of the poet's times, too, and the issues that confront a poet in America!

Stands alone as a managment book.......2003-05-29

I'm amazed that this book hasn't been discovered by more people.

It is clear that the author's view on valuing employees passes the real-world test because, unlike the many management consultants and academicians who have written primarily theoretical works, Melohn actually delivered outstanding business performance through the implementation of his approach.

If you're only going to read one book on this topic, you've just found it.

A refreashing outlook on empowering people.......1999-09-30

The author has a rare view of himself in corporate America. He sees himself as a servant to the people and works on drawing out the best in them. I loved the book because it is proof the managing and directing a force of people through values works! Perhaps the best aspect of the book is that he gives practical steps to incorporate these steps in a organization. However he makes it clear that unless the leaders of a organization embrace these values the efforts of others really wont' matter. He calls leaders to the carpet. You can't expect things (values, work ethic etc) from others until you do it yourself and model it consistently. Personally I have never worked for someone like Tom, however I would love the chance to.
