5 out of 5 stars Save your time.......2006-03-05

I bought the 2nd edition ( ISBN:0973455187 ) of this book. I really love it, especially the step-by-step sequence of it. I would say that even I do have the broadband internet connection but if I would be searching for the information that I have found in this book, It would have cost me at least $1000/- worth my time. If you are looking to migrate to Canada then this book will be a smart start that can save you $$$$$ and time.

I wish I'd read more of the reviews before I bought this book.. There is one review (Reviewer: Raj. April 20, 2005) that explains that this is just a copy of what available at the Canadian immigration web site... and that's what it is. There is NOTHING in this book that is not available at the www site... DON'T waste your money!!!!!

                      Book Description

The book is concerned with the statistical theory for locating spatial sensors. It bridges the gap between spatial statistics and optimum design theory. After introductions to those two fields the topics of exploratory designs and designs for spatial trend and variogram estimation are treated. Special attention is devoted to describing new methodologies to cope with the problem of correlated observations. A great number of relevant references are collected and put into a common perspective. The theoretical investigations are accompanied by a practical example, the redesign of an Upper-Austrian air pollution monitoring network. A reader should be able to find respective theory and recommendations on how to efficiently plan a specific purpose spatial monitoring network. The third edition takes into account the rapid development in the area of spatial statistics by including new relevant research and references. The revised edition contains additional material on design for detecting spatial dependence and for estimating parametrized covariance functions.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars First book on spatial design.......2001-04-06

Spatial statistics is an important subject, and there are excellent books such as Ripley, Cressie's books. However, very little work has been done on how to collect spatial data, though experimental design is an old but important subject in Statistics. This book, now in its second edition, makes an excellent start in this emerging area. This reviewer, fortunately, has the chance to participate in a multinational weather experiment in which one of the goals is to collect additional spatial data for improving existing data network and for improving short-time-scale and mesoscale weather forecast. This led to our study of adaptive design for spatial dynamical systems and spatial fields, leading to a 1999 paper on J. of Atmospheric Sciences and a book Chapter in Studies in Atmospheric Sciences published by Springer in 2000. Now, adaptive spatial design, or targeted observations, is an very hot area in meteorology, and many papers have published in meteorology dealing with various aspects of applications. There are good economic reasons also for doing adaptive design, though practical impacts of this approach need to be justified also. After making this unnecessary detour, what do I think of this book? Well, I think it's an excellent supplementary book for a spatial statistics course. This book only covers the classic aspects of spatial design, namely a frequentist approach to static design for standard spatial estimation and prediction, with applications such as in designing monitoring stations. By combining with our more recent work optimal design using Bayesian methods, you probably get a very good coverage of statistical design for spatial or space-time fields, an area which I foresee more developments in the future.

                        Book Description

Paul Nagel's Descent from Glory was an extraordinary critical and popular success, a Book-of-the-Month Club main selection hailed by reviewers as "magnificent" (The New York Times Book Review) and "splendid" (The Christian Science Monitor). That book focused on the men in the Adams family,
but many readers--and Nagel himself--felt that the most interesting and stirring part of the Adams family saga was the story of the women. Here at last is the book many readers urged Nagel to write: the full story of some of the most interesting and important and articulate women in American
history. This is no mere sequel to the first book; it is an attempt to do justice in their own right to some extraordinary individuals in their own right who happened to be women and whose personal lives and outlooks have been eclipsed by the famous men who surrounded them.
Nagel portrays his subjects as they saw themselves and each other. This is possible because of the abundant comment and confession they shared with each other, much of it surviving in the Adams Papers. They spoke to one another about their existence with a frankness and detail which is unmatched
in American historical sources. We find them in the joy, sorrow, dreariness, and peril which came to females of that era, no matter who they were. Thus this intimate and candid portrait may be our nearest approach to how American females actally lived and thought between 1750 and 1850.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Most Interesting Study!.......2003-11-27

Co-dependent relatives? Disfunctional families? Yes, these are modern pop-psychology terms. But Paul Nagel shows that these things existed at least two centuries ago, in one of Americaýs most prominent families.

Most of the book discussed the Smith sisters --- Mary, Abigail, and Elizabeth. What struck me most about these three is how much they came to rely on each other. This has a good side --- i.e., thereýs always a sympathetic ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on, or a pair of hands to pitch in when help was needed. It has a ýbadý side too --- for often one sisterýs ýconcerný for or about another bordered on interference. And it seems that the first rule of the Smith Sisters was ýNever raise your own children when they can be passed on to a relative.ý But who knows, maybe that was just the eighteenth century form of ýday care.ý

The other major chunk of the book describes John Quincy Adamsý wife Louisa: a very fascinating, intelligent, and educated woman ... whose husband probably did not appreciate her. If anything, John Quincy appeared rather wimpy compared to Louisa.

The final generation discussed in this book is that of Charles Francis Adams and his wife --- also Abigail.

Throughout the book we are treated to accounts and anecdotes about the various Adams relatives and in-laws. It is amazing how the behavior of these people came so close to disgracing or embarrassing the sitting presidents, John or John Quincy. If it happened today, the Press would be all over it!

This was the second of Paul Nagelýs books on the Adams family that Iýve read. Like his John Quincy Adams, The Adams Women was informative and well-researched, if a bit pedantic in tone. It brought to life this fascinating family and the era in which they lived.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Study.......2001-01-01

Author Nagel has done a wonderful job of bringing the lives of the Adams women to life. The first part of the book concentrates on Abigail Smith, wife of John Adams and her sisters. Their letters describing their daily lives are fascinating. The various daughters of these women are also highlighted. The only daughter of John and Abigail, Abigail (nickednamed Nabby) is a particularly heartbreaking story. Pushed by her mother to marry a "promising" young man, she becomes the abandoned wife of a cruel alcoholic, living in near poverty. Unable to break away because of the strict moral codes of the time, she succombs to cancer, dying in her father's arms. Almost all of the women of the family were tortured by the alcoholism of either their husbands or sons. Louisa Johnson, the wife of John Quincy Adams is also highlighted. Her unhappy marriage to a difficult man is portrayed sympathetically.

Even though thiese women lived almost 200 years ago, their stories are timeless. Unable to contol their own destinies, these women nevertheless contributed greatly to their families and communities.

1 out of 5 stars Nagel takes another potshot at the Abigail Adams.......2000-04-12

Nagel starts his book with a discussion of how happy he is to write another book on the Adames, specifically on the women. He then proceeds to tear the best of them, Abigail Sr., to shreds. Portraying her as shrewish, domineering, and just distasteful, he paints an inaccuratly biased view of an amazing woman who was far before her time. Although I don't know enough of the other women to critque his evaluations of them, I have read Abigails letters at the Mass Historical society and have read countless books on her during the last six months in relation to an intensive research project. I have seen many different "reads" of Abigail from feminist to domestic to maternal...but none so blatantly anti-Abigail. I suppose the world needs dissent to continue to have interesting discourse, but Nagel quite obviously hates Abigail Adams. If you read his book, please temper it with something like Portia, which is admittedly dry, but will give you a good counterpoint to Nagels criticisms.

4 out of 5 stars Another winner for Nagel & the Adams!.......1999-10-24

Another winner for Nagel. This book is as good as his other two about the Adams family. I still don't find Abigail very likeable. The pressure she put on her children to achieve broke 3 of them and the lone successful child (John Quincy) turned around and did the same with his children. I really enjoyed the writer's descriptions of Louisa. I hope to see a full blown biography of her someday...she deserves it! I gained a true understanding why John Quincy had the personality he did. Abigail was extremely intelligent and ahead of her time. I enjoyed reading of her true partnership with husband John.

In 21 interwoven stories, author Robert Amerson re-creates life on his family's 160-acre farm in the remote Hidewood Hills of eastern South Dakota from 1934 to 1942. In exquisite detail, he portrays a particular moment in time with a power that could help many readers better understand their own pasts.

I grew up in the Hidewood area and I have purchased some copies of this book as gifts which were given to old friends. The book is well written, factual, reasonably documented for a work of this sort, contains many names I recognize, and it provides an accurate verbal picture of life in this small part of the country during that period of time. I do not know the author, but his style certainly fits comfortably with the culture he describes. This is rural South Dakota depicted as I also recall it, and it has been written by one of our own. There is another author, Jim Roth, who has published a book titled "Memories of Estelline" which describes this same small region a couple of decades later in a series of short essays. However, I suspect books of this sort will be of interest to a rather limited population.

4 out of 5 stars A story of my neighborhood.......2002-06-03

I grew up two miles and one generation away from the setting of this story. It brought back childhood memories of familiar locations and names. The author uses an interesting technique of telling the story with different points of view in each chapter. It makes for enjoyable reading even though it's a mostly fiction story based on real characters. The author's POV is used often enough to bring out the emotions of a coming-of-age story and the social aspects of mid-Thirties farm life. There are many similarities between this Hidewood memoir and mine, "A Farm in the Hidewood: My South Dakota Home."

                            Book Description

This book provides in-depth coverage of the most important results about fuzzy logic including negations, conjunctions, disjunctions, implications and gives the interrelations between those different connectives. The work brings together multiple results about valued binary relations satisfying diverse transitivity-type conditions.
The authors propose the first sound introduction to valued preference modelling through the systematic use of fuzzy set theory and functional equations and derive the possible foundations for multicriteria decision aid using aggregation, ranking and choice procedures on the basis of axiomatic results. The text presents a unified view of various multicriteria decision making tools that have been independently derived in the past, dealing with pairwise comparisons. The monograph is mathematically oriented but the results will be of the greatest interest for engineers and economists who design and implement decision support systems in practice. It is also supplied with a sufficient number of examples to make it attractive to nonspecialists.

                              Book Description

Because the actions of multinational corporations have a clear and direct effect on the flow of capital throughout the world, how and why these firms behave the way they do is a major issue for national governments and their policymakers. With an unprecedented ability to adjust the scale, character, and location of their global operations, international corporations have become increasingly sensitive to the kind and degree of tax obligations imposed on them by both host and home countries. Tax rules affect the volume of foreign direct investment, corporate borrowing, transfer pricing, dividend and royalty payments, and research and development. National governments that tax the profits of international firms face important challenges in designing tax policies to attract them. This collection examines the global ramifications of tax policies, offering up-to-date, theoretically innovative, and empirically sound perspectives on a problem of immense significance to future economic growth around the globe.

From the supplier: IRC section 367 identifies the tax treatment of tangible property and intangible property, including securities and intellectual property, transferred by a US person to a foreign corporation. Recognition of income from such property and continued tax jurisdiction over the property was enacted to ensure that businesses do not avoid taxation of appreciated property through outbound transfers. Section 367 triggers deemed annual royalties for intangible property to ensure that corporations that benefit from research tax incentives cannot avoid US taxation.

From the supplier: The IRS has released final regulations under IRC section 482 that identify the requirements that must be met for cost-sharing arrangement (CSA) to be considered qualified. CSAs are used to allocate research and development costs incurred when intangible property is developed and used by more than one business entity. The regulations identify what steps must be taken for an agreement to be a qualified CSA. CSA treatment can provide significant tax planing opportunities but can also reduce foreign-source income and research and development expense deductions.

From the author: While regulations on tax evasion via transfer pricing have been thoroughly explored in the literature, little is known about the effects of domestic tax policies under a Bilateral Advanced Price Agreement (hereafter BAPA) on production decisions of multinational companies. I show that, even if BAPAs prohibit income shifting through transfer pricing, inefficiencies arise via distorted production when markets across countries are interrelated through intra-firm trade of multinational companies. The analysis provides governments with useful guidance for how to coordinate tax agreements.

From the supplier: Transfer price, or the price at which entities transfer goods or intangible property or furnish services to a parent firm or subsidiary, has attracted the scrutiny of the IRS because of the possibility that firms could use transfer pricing to shift profits between related firms through cost of goods sold. Many legal disputes about transfer pricing have arisen between the IRS and organizations. The IRS has therefore developed a program to allow firms to negotiate a prospective deal with it pertaining to transfer pricing methods, facts and an acceptable range of results.
