The Best of the Human Side is full of valuable advice and perspectives on increasing your effectiveness as an individual, as a member of a team, or as part of a larger organization. Customer Reviews:
Practical, thoughtful, succinct look at family business........1998-09-06
For the consultant, advisor, or family member, this is a must read because it is an excellent guide through the sometimes difficult waters of family business.
As an advisor to family owned businesses, I found the book particularly helpful in understanding the individual in relationship to the business and in understanding the interplay of the family system with the business system.
Ms. Dashew is straightfoward in her approach to the complexities of family owned business. She provides ample exercises that draws the readers attention to the issues with tips you can use in resolving those issues.
In her book, Ms. Dashew tackles difficult issues such as substance abuse (an issue too often supressed in the family and the business) and whether to join the family business. She brings clarity to the issues and provides practical advise.
Whatever your involvement with family owned businesses, this is a book that should be on your bookshelf.
Thorough, fresh, and insightful - from a leader in the field.......1998-07-29
This is one of the best books on personal development that I have read. A rare find amid the myriad self-help and pop psychology books, The Best of the Human Side offers a fresh perspective relayed with warmth, humor, and common sense. Many topics address issues family businesses face; however, several of these same topics (confrontation, dialogue, listening) apply just as strongly to non-business, interpersonal relationships.
I look forward to reading more from Leslie Dashew.
The best book to date on the complexity of a family business.......1998-06-29
In its most simple form, The Best Of The Human Side is about making connections.
First, there must be a connection with one's own identity - of being clear about who you are and what you are about before you can adequately enter into the second part of the book - making connections with others.
Finally, having looked at some practical ways of connecting with others, Leslie brings us to the most interesting and dynamic of all human interactions - the family business connection.
Having grown up in a family business, I can state with certainty that the insights, lessons and tools that are provided in The Best Of The Human Side are pragmatic, useful and easily understood.
There is a healing that takes place as you begin to understand that the dynamics of a family business are shared by most, if not all, family businesses. Ms. Dashew pulls from a wealth of different sources (i.e. The I Ching to The Lion King) to explain the multifaceted issues that face family businesses and in that explanation, there is a connection with other families who are experiencing the same thing you are.
For anyone who owns a family business, works for a family business, consults to a family business or in any way is connected to a family business, this book is a must to read.
It is easy to read but don't let that fool you to the depth of its content. Take your time and reflect on each chapter. This book makes a real connection!

Good Ship Happens! :-).......2003-06-30
An excellent book if you want to sell anything online; full of very practical and easy to implement advice for running an efficient back office. I learned how to successfully navigate shipping procedures, avoid internet fraud, process payments, manage customer service and complex tax nexus issues. The book is very complete and well organized - a must read for anyone doing business online! - Jason Hartman
Excellent Guide for Ebiz & Ecommerce.......2001-03-01
Excellent guide, especially for those implementing e-catalogs. Very good for The chapters are direct, loaded with questions and checklists.
Book that is long overdue.......2001-01-06
This is a topic that is long overdue. One only need look at the headlines of how some e-merchants badly fouled up fulfillment this holiday and the prior one to realize how invaluable this book is for e-commerce. Especially useful are the checklists, work-sheets and the exensive research Ms. Bayles did in finding pertinent sites that have a bearing on the topic. This is a book that, in contrast to others on e-commerce, will never go out of date.

excellent.......2006-11-03
This book is completely unique among the knitting books I've read. It's not a pattern book, not an instruction book, and not a book of nice feel-good knitting stories. It's a lot of good advice from a seasoned knitter and yarn store owner. Reading this book, one learns about knitting basics, knitting groups, knitting gifts, knitwear design, and a bunch of other topics. A purely enjoyable and helpful book, I would highly recommend it to any level of knitter.
Explore the diverse world of knitting.......2004-11-29
This book serves as a map to the world of the handknitter. It isn't a travelogue -- you won't stay long in one location or learn too many of the details -- but you will get the bird's eye view. She deals with charity knitting, a big area for many knitters. She deals with specialty techniques such as instarsia in a simple cotton bag. She deals with knitting in the modern age with patterns for things such as a palm pilot cover and information on web sites and knitting mailing lists.
If you are a beginner or intermediate knitter, buy this book, read it to learn what you can this go round and put it aside. Take it out in a year or so and read it again. As you progress as a knitter, you will find more to learn and gleen from this book. You won't get tired of it any time soon.
Good resource.......2004-03-12
This book is a great resource for those of us interested in the history of knitting, the feel of knitting, the type of fibers used, and much more information. But, don't think it'll teach you how to knit. I think there are much better books out there to "teach" knitting. This is a book letting you realize that you aren't alone in your love for knitting. It's a delightful quick read.
Great for the advanced beginner, not bad for an old hand.......2002-02-05
I bought this book on a whim (it cost just the amount I needed to qualify for free shipping) and then read the reviews. My heart sunk a little when one of the reviewers said the book was only for beginners. I've been knitting for over 30 years and teach advanced classes. Had I wasted my money? No.
I've been reading "The Joy of Knitting" a chapter at a time and really enjoying it. The book consists of twelve chapters. Each chapter has ten to fifteen pages of thoughtful prose followed by a project/pattern. The heart of the book is the prose. The topics include knitting how to sections about fiber, color, and texture. What sets this book apart from the others are the wonderful chapters on the greater essence of knitting -- the history of knitting; knitting groups; tricks on knitting gifts; knitting resources on the internet; computer design; the internationalization of knitting (i.e. the recent interest in Russian shawls, Latvian mittens, etc.) and a final chapter on knitting to improve the world.
The patterns include a simple mobius scarf, watch cap, socks, a palm pilot cover, Latvian mittens and seven others.
This isn't a book for novices but is a perfect book for the newly "hooked" knitter who wants to know more about the greater universe of this wonderful hobby. Even as a veteran, I learned more than enough to justify the cost of the book and will urge my local store owner to carry the book.
Truly a joy.......2002-01-04
Ms Myers has it right: knitting at this point in our history is more than the necessity it was for our ancestors; knitting is something we do to give pleasure to ourselves and others, and it's a way of connecting with our community and with our past. While this book isn't a total guide to knitting, that's not a drawback. There are plenty of other all-inclusive how-to books (Vogue's Guide to Knitting, Knitting Without Tears, and Knitting in Plain English are my three basic reference works)and there's always your friendly local knitting shop for hands-on assistance. Really, The Joy of Knitting fills another niche: it provides some basic instruction, a few simple projects to give you a push to get started, and quite of bit of information and encouragement. I've been knitting off and on for a number of years, but would classify myself as a beginner (more enthusiasm than skill). This book got me going again - it reminded me of why I began knitting in the first place and why I enjoy it. I knit for my own pleasure (for the joy of creating something); I knit for the pleasure of those I love (thinking of them while I'm working on the project and reveling in their amazement over the finished piece); I knit to feel a part of history (following in the footsteps of my mother and grandmothers); and I knit because I'm part of a larger community of (mostly) women around the world who knit for all these reasons and more. The Joy of Knitting brought this all home to me and rekindled my interest in this wonderful form of self-expression. Get a copy for yourself (and your child?) and see how easy and pleasurable knitting can be. Give a copy to someone you love. Who knows: your thanks just might be a hand-knitted Mobius scarf!

In this surprising, often thoughtful, political biography, investigative writer for the American Spectator David Brock--best known as the right-wing hatchet man who produced "The Real Anita Hill"--makes a case for Hillary Rodham Clinton as a brilliant, principled, but betrayed woman. Hillary Clinton's social activism, Brock notes, is rooted in liberal Methodism and deep compassion for the underprivileged, especially children; but it has been distorted and derailed by her Faustian alliance with her husband, "the greatest seducer who ever lived," according to former White House aide David Watkins.
Book Description
No public figure in contemporary life has elicited more polarized reactions than Hillary Rodham Clinton. The first presidential spouse who pursued a major policymaking role, the beleaguered first lady has been a heroine and role model to her feminist alliesand a malevolent, power-mad shrew to her conservative foes.
Now David Brock, America's most controversial journalist, takes on the most controversial first lady in history, producing a boldly incisive yet surprisingly sensitive portrait. A political biography of the first order, The Seduction of Hillary Rodham is the story of one strong-willed woman's struggle to maintain her personal and political integrity in the face of powerfully seductive forces, including the appeal of Bill Clinton, a charismatic, talented, but deeply flawed man who may have been both the best and the worst thing that ever happened to her.
Customer Reviews:
Cankle biter.......2007-02-05
David Brock's Seduction is a great read, and it will be curious to see this work rise on AMAZON's sales list now that Hillary has lifted her skirts for a run to the White House (watch those cankles!).
Brock's Seduction of Hillary Rodham will satisfy no one on the tails of the normal distribution of those with an opinion of Hillary Rodham Clinton (HRM HRC).
Which makes it a surprisingly honest book, but one that mostly lays the blame of her political development on the round heals of her opportunistic and amoral husband.
Still, Brock's prose packs a punch, and his journalism alternates between thorough and tedious to sloppy and careworn. Errors a plenty, but about evenly divided into the camp of ones that hurt HRC and ones that help her, so no prize on elevating one error over the other to prove an ideological point on the one-upmanship game.
This book was originally commissioned by The American Spectator and offered as a subscription renewal premium, so it would be fair to anticipate that there might be a slant or agenda attached. Yet delivery of Seduction was delayed for a good while, both from Brock's missing deadlines, and the ultimate lukewarm conclusion the book comes to about HRC: she's not the devil incarnate, nor particularly great, nor hopelessly Lady Macbeth, but rather an intelligent ambitious pol of the old entitlement school of rule and divide spoils. The editors of The AmSpec were probably not amused, but by then articles were appearing about Brock's private life and journalistic techniques in The Washington Post. The book disappointed everyone, and eventually Brock was given the heave-ho from AmSpec (deserved) but well remembered and thanked for his great book The Real Anita Hill (also deserved).
The two weakest areas are Hilary's handling of Federally subpoenaed documents for the Whitewater investigation (she hid and suppressed them is about the only logical conclusion you could come to) and her amazing 10 sigma event of earning 1000% returns on cattle futures glancing at headlines in the Wall Street Journal (I have a bridge to sell you, comes with the Eiffel Tower). But neither Hilary haters nor Hilary defenders (she doesn't need them) will be happy with this book.
She's a Great Woman.......2005-06-29
Almost ten years have passed since the publication of this book. From before then and until recently, David Brock has appeared now and again on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal," during which time he moved from the right to the left on the political spectrum, eventuating in his disavowal of the right-wing attack machine in which he had played such an important part. Compelled by a sudden interest in Hillary Rodham because of her possible run for president, I selected THIS book to educate myself on her because it was during the research and writing of it that Brock turned away from the dark side of the force. Something about her inspired him to take a political one-eighty, so one would assume that he shared in this book something of what it was that brought him to such illumination. I remember when it was released, right wingers were furious to learn that their heretofore reliable hitman hadn't delivered the magic bullet that would put an end to the Clintons, and Hillary in particular. Instead, Brock presented a detailed account of the influences that drive Hillary Rodham, and to a liberal's delight and a right winger's disdain, she's basically a deeply spiritual person, with her ideology steeped in Christianity, the type known as social gospel activism. It's hard to take the moral high ground in opposing her after these submissions, and you'll have to find something else to hate her for besides your affected righteous indignation.
The book focuses primarily on her moral influences, and shows how they consistently affected her. She had always been personally conservative, despite the influences of the campuses she attended in the 60s, shunning the libertinism, refraining from drugs, and remaining relatively chaste; politically she rejected the destructive anti-establishment revolutionary thinking preached by the harder activists. Her activism lay in the belief in making change within the system by altering how the law is viewed. It was all very fascinating stuff, and the reader will learn to split a hair or two.
What some readers in some of these reviews possibly objected to was the way Brock mentioned some of the rumors -- gossip, mostly from her detractors, alleging lesbianism or an affair with Vince Foster; the gossipers should make up their minds -- but these stories had to be discussed if the book was to have any credibility at all. Brock inserted some incredulity into the comments by putting them in the context of hardball politics played by her husband's political enemies, jealous backbiters, and sometimes just plain old Arkansas male chauvinism. When Hillary moved with Bill back to his home state, she didn't deal graciously with a male-dominated political system that resented strong women. Some of Bill's closest friends panned her. Her strenghts made them feel weak. From what I gleaned, she was committed to intelligence itself as a tool, as a gift, and as such, regarded it as an asset she was sure principled people would appreciate. This was not the case, as most people's agendas were less noble than her own. Eventually, she learned to play the political game, to take on APPEARANCES, using tactics every politician on Capital Hill uses every day, and, as in everything else she sets her mind to, she excelled in it. Lacking her practicality and her commitment to her long-range goals, some people were harshly critical of her, accused her of selling out. The truth is, she detested the political games even as she played them -- preferring instead entreaties to reason -- but she brushed aside her objections for what she felt was a greater good, the use of her gifts to make positive changes in society.
More instructional to the reader is the detailed accounting of the scandals that had eclipsed everything and anything else about the Clintons. The tableu that had played out via hundreds of insinuating soundbites was revealed as just a shadow play. The financial scandals were too complicated to be appreciated through snatches of news, and Brock here lays them out in detail, connects the dots, forming a cohesive story, and you realize that a lot was made of nothing, that the whole fiasco resulted from machinations of a partisan political system, polemics gone wild. He doesn't explicitly say so here in this book, as he does in a later one, but that is indeed the case.
Overall, it's a good read. Only one part was boring, an interminably long description of how people were selected for President Clinton's cabinet, a tedious detailing of the relationships Hillary relied upon to establish control. This is only a minor point. Most of the time, he moves along. Brock's criticisms were always accompanied with a mitigating point, describing Hillary in the context of a political food chain. And while Brock's criticisms seemed harsher toward the end of the book, the rest of it betrays his very high regard for her.
And why wouldn't he have a high regard? She possesses a moral conviction to advance society for everyone's benefit, and a superior intelligence at her disposal to aid her in accomplishing it, qualities that would add up to greatness in any other politician. Brock's main detraction is how Hillary dealt with a hostile poltical environment, that her education and her values inhered in her a more principled approach, one based on moral arguments she might deliver in a courtroom, and this worked to her detriment in the final analysis. But she's unable to set the rules, and thereby forced to play by them as they are. That's a small detraction in my estimation. By the time I had turned the last page, I had come to see her in an entirely new light, as one fine human being with only minor character flaws. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a clearer picture of her.
On the other hand, to the rabid Clinton bashers, I say this: Don't bother, as YOU won't get much out of it; it is simply not spiteful enough.
Why does Brock hate Hillary?.......2002-03-22
In page after page of "facts" based on assumptions, presumptions, and lies, he produces a tale of flimsy accusations of improperity against a woman who is much brighter, quicker, and kinder than her male counterparts. It was easily apparent that he manufactured much of the "facts."
The Vast Credibility Conspiracy.......2002-03-08
I read this book when it was first issued. The more time passes, the less impressed I am by the work.
At the timethe book was issued, I noted what must have been a very painful episode in the subject's life, at least as Brock reports it.
According to Daivd Brock, for her entire life, Hillary Rodham's mother urged her daughter to excell at academics. Yet when Hillary received the singular honor of giving the commencement address at her college, an event that brought her national attention at a young age, Brock reports that Hillary's mother was not in attendence. That struck me as what must have been a particularly bittersweet moment in the young Ms. Rodham's life. To work so hard for approval and then receive none.
Several years later, in a biography that received cooperation from the First Lady, Gail Sheehy reported that it was Hugh Rodham, Hillary's beloved father, who had skipped her famous commencement address in lieu of other pressing activities.
Mistaking the subject's mother for the subject's father strikes me as a rather serious factual error for a biographer.
Even-handed????.......2001-06-13
I disagree with the other reviews of this book. It is even-handed only if you consider damning with faint praise to be even-handedness. Brock's thesis is that while Bill Clinton is a sleaze bag; Hillary is a sincere committed radical--sort of a Emma Goldman with a law degree. While he does at times acknowledge that a double standard has been applied to the Clintons, as compared for example to the Bushes, he repeatedly denigrates Hillary by resorting to guilt by association. He trots out every associate she has ever had who has been involved in any liberal or left-wing cause and gives you their background in lurid detail. According to Brock, Hillary's intellectual development stopped in college or law school. I await his new book to see whether he really is ready to write an even-handed appraisal of the current political scene. In this book, he assumes that the liberals are naive or out to destroy basic American values. For example, he assumes that there wasn't merit at all to the Vietnam war protests or that anyone could actually believe that the war was both immoral and not in the interests of the United States of America.--Arthur Amchan

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on Strategic Management.......2000-04-10
This book is very excellent for being comprehensive and well organized. It is also written in very lucid language but professional, which made it easy for the reader to go through the book and understand the ideas of the authors. This book helps in building a visionary style of thinking for the leaders to enable them to cop with the challenges of the 21st century. It covers many aspects of strategic management like finance, marketing, purchasing, and planning organization, human resources and non-business strategic management.
The authors support their ideas by case studies. In fact they incorporated 19 case studies in the text that make it very practical and unique.
