Great reference book for those who love to crochet and design their own patterns. It is also good for beginners because the introduction explains the basic crochet stitches along with their variations. The diagrams and color pictures of each stitch pattern are very helpful. Highly recommended for anyone who crochets or wants to learn how to crochet.

Nice assortment of stitches. Definitely enough to keep a crocheter busy for a long time to come.

I did find some of the diagrams of the stitch patterns confusing, but the stitch diagram of the granny quare really helped a lot.

Unique use of easy stitches.......2007-01-23

This particular Harmony Guide has the standard sc, dc, front and back post, cluster, and v stitches shown in color with clear directions. What sets it apart from other stitch guides are the number of combinations of the sc and dc to make interesting cloth patterns. Many of the cluster and chain groups are different from patterns I have seen in other books, and several sc, dc in a stich with chains or not produce very pleasant fabrics. The motifs are typical, and the edgings are ones you could find in other books. For creating your own scarf or blanket, this book shows lots of possible results, and I have thoroughly enjoyed using it.

This book has very nice patterns, some of them are found everywhere, some of them are rare. The patterns are easy to follow, I haven`t seen any mistakes yet. It`s a good reference book to look up the patterns, and also a good experimentation book to challenge yourself with the tough patterns once in a while. Highly recomended!(All these apply to V6).

For those who think Irish.......2006-12-24

A kindly nephew, after hearing me at a fmaily dinner announce how bored I was with my hobby, and how I craved getting into a new one, thought of me this Christmas and bought me "220 More Crochet Stitches" hoping I might find the world of, whatever it is, more exciting than my present hobby of rescuing abandoned pit bulls and training them to help the blind. Well, I'm torn. Of Irish descent myself, as is my nephew and pretty much my whole family, my eye was caught by the hefty section on Irish crocheting--oh, wait a second, "Irish style" crocheting which is a horse of a different color, for never in any of my trips to Ireland have I seen such patterns as these. Lovely they are, are some of them, and as I wrote my nephew, very dear, and yet I can't picture myself, even in tyhe direst of straits say I was reduced to penury and had to corchet my living so I could put a wee bit of a roof over my head, I can't imagine ever willingly picking up the crocket needles and having a go of it. Consider this, my friends, this is the first two steps of "Irish Style Crochet IV.16"

First round, "1ch. work 10sc into ring, sl st into first sc."

Second round, "1ch, work 1sc into each sc, sl st into first sc."

Not on my watch! Yes, after a bit I got into the sweet groove of it, as I imagine that "1ch" might stand for "one chain," by why not separate the numeral "1" from the initials "ch"? Why run them together as "1ch"? Looks like an itch to me! The finished product, in a watery green lace, resembles a leaf gone to seed in a old pool of grave water from a halfdug grave in County Curran. It's about the size of a doily, or perhaps a soup plate if you had such a thing in your house. Yes, I can see bringing in your needles when you're bored, perhaps if you're on a jury. (But will the judge or foreman allow you to bring in the objects of steel backstage as it were onto an empanelled jury?) Yes, have a go if you must, but as I told my nephew, it's back to the pit bulls for me, for there's never a shortage of the blind wanting a good dog with a spirit in him.

Skip this unless you prefer openwork crochet........2006-09-16

I bought this hoping for some new and interesting all-over patterns. What I found was a book that was really focused on openwork and motifs. If you prefer that sort of thing, this book has a lot of designs, but a lot of them are in the Readers Digest Ultimate Sourcebook (also published by Harmony, but in a softcover and more expensive!!). They've even used the exact same pictures. And, for the price, you're better off getting the Ultimate Sourcebook.

Now, that said, this has possible THE best illustrations of basic stitches that I've ever seen. You can clearly see where the hook should go, including how many threads are over where you insert (for instance, when I was learning, I never could figure out if I was supposed to put the hook under the top two loops or just the top one). I wish they used such detailed visuals in every other crochet book!!! Also, they include very easy to read diagrams, which I just love. I wish every crochet stitch book had diagrams as well, because it just makes it so much easier to figure out what you are doing wrong. :) Anyway, I might get the 300 Crochet stitches book to see if that one has any more of the basic stitches, because while all of these seem to be in the Ultimate Sourcebook, the Sourcebook doesn't contain any diagrams. Makes me wonder if there are diagrams in the Harmony softcover version of the book. Hmmm. The binding on this book sucks, as it is simple glue (more like a large magazine than a book. Likely to fall apart if you use it often. One other issue, they don't tell you if patterns are beginner, intermediate, or expert, which would be nice to glance at and figure out.

Bottom line, unless you want a book dedicated almost exclusively to complicated openwork patterns, skip this book. Definitely not for a beginner or intermediate worker.

Another Must have for every crocheter.......2005-12-06

Not only do you get more stitches but the Afghan/Tunisian tutorial in here is well OVERLY complete. No there are not any written out patterns, but the stitch dictionary can help you create your own patterns. Be sure to get the Harmony Guide Volume 6 to go along with this one, both books are a must have for any crocheter's library.

Not only was the seller prompt in sending the book but my expectations were exceeded with the book itself. This book has every possible crochet pattern you could ever want along with how to, step by step, make these stitches if you don't already know. It also has color pictures for those of you that are more visual learners. I highly recommend this to anyone that loves to crochet.

This book introduced me to the art of Tunisian Crochet and I have been addicted ever since. It has fabulous photos, pictorial patterns and written instructions for all over patterns, filet crochet, motifs, edgings, trimmings and tunisian. It is very clear and easy to understand. I originally came accross it 5years ago in the public library system but have been unable to source it here in Australia. Thanks Heaps Amazon !! PS its sequel "The Harmony Guide to 100's more Crochet Stitches" is based on the same format and is equally good. For those who havent been able to get hold of "The harmony Guide to Crochet : techniques and stitches", this might be a welcome substitute...anyone who wants to share afghan patterns is welcome to email me...

One of the best presentations I've seen so far on crochet stitches. The contents are Introduction 1 page where it shows how to start crocheting, Basic stitches 1 page. Then one page for crochet fabric demonstrates treble all of these shown with very good illustrations not pictures but they are so good they are like pictures then it shows bobbles, clusters popcorns etc.
Three pages on pattern instructions and abbreviations and symbols. The next chapter is allover patterns it has about 63 of these, next is filet crochet, next is motifs, next is irish style crochet, next is edgings and trimmings and the 6th chapter afghan crochet

The author, James Fleming, was one of my Professors at RIT. He worked on this biography for as long as I can remember. I am truly impressed by the final product. I wish there were more politians today like Barber Conable, Jr. He worked for the people and always did the "right" thing. I enjoyed reading about the different administrations and I learned a lot about the inner workings of congress.

Conable as in "Able".......2004-05-03

The Republic won't see the likes of Barber Conable again soon. Fleming brings to life a decent, principled man who in many ways sets the standard for what a Representative should be. Today's congress would do well to emulate Mr. Conable. Fleming uses the crtical eye of a political scientist combined with extensive first person interviews of Conable and staff, and has written a 'must read' not only for poltical junkies, but for anyone interested in our government.
