If I could only own one Italian cookbook..........2006-07-11

...it would certainly be one by Marcella Hazan, and quite possibly this particular title. This book is not only full of classic recipes, but information on the importance of using the right ingredients, care in preparation, and all of the details to make a recipe come out just right. I use this cookbook almost weekly, for these are recipes that do not require endless preparation time nor long lists of ingredients; these are practical, traditional Italian recipes that anyone can prepare with a little care and attention to the details.

Some of my favorites are the Pan-Roasted Porgies with Marjoram and Lemon; Swordfish with Salmoriglio Sauce; Thin Spaghetti with Scallops; Veal Scaloppine Sauced with Anchovies and Capers. If you are looking for a good introduction to Italian cooking beyond red gravy pasta and meatballs, this book would be an excellent choice.

This is an amazing compilation of italian favorites - authentic tastes and flavors. I have enjoyed every thing I have made especially the focaccia bread with rosemary. Anyone on the WW Flex plan should include this in their cookbook library. Its awesome!

Lose weight and still get to eat great Italian food!!!.......2006-08-15

WOW!! This is my new fave cookbook. I just started WW Online less than a week ago and have cooked out of this book everyday and love, love, love being able to enjoy great Italian food and still lose weight! I've lost 9 lbs. in the last 5 days and have had some type of Italian dish EVERYDAY!! I made yummy Spinach Stuffed Shells for a dinner party yesterday and everyone was raving about them and did not have a clue they were from WW until I whooped out the cookbook. Plan on using this book on a VERY regular basis!!

Great for Italian food.......2006-02-23

I've not used this book as much as I have some of the other Weight Watchers cook books but this one is just as good. If your love to cook Italian food, and want to stay within your points, this one will have you covered. Things covered in this book are Pizza and pasta based dishes along with several not so Americanized Italian dishes. You'll get recipes for making home made pasta as well as several types of breads that won't blow your diet.

We love this book. I haven't made a recipe from it that we don't like, and my husband is a picky eater!
Even though I am no longer strictly following the Weight Watchers plan we still turn to this book for our favorites.

In "The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews II," Edda Servi Machlin provides vivid descriptions of the daily life of the once-flourishing Jewish community of Pitigliano in Italy's Tuscan hills. Accompanying the more than 250 recipes is a rich treasury of the history, lore, and cultural and religious traditions of this thousand-year-old village, where Ms. Machlin lived as a girl and as a young woman. Included are recipes for Italian dishes adapted to fit Jewish dietary laws as well as dishes that combine ancient Sephardic preparations with Italian cooking. This volume is more than a cookbook; it is a valuable cultural document.

Even better than the first volume, with more discussions and examples. The recipes, as with Volume I, are as classic as ever, and well balanced. Strongly recommend.

Gilding with metal leaf is just the start for this author. The other major technique covered is the use of bronze powders (aka metallic powders).

Other techniques covered include: gilding on glass, hand painting on metal leaf, paint effect, tortoiseshell effect, sprit dyes to create mottled effects, verdigris, metallic waxes, distressing and incising.

Many excellent photos are included along with concise instructions.

A Brush with Talent.......2003-03-06

In a market overcrowded with books on decorative paint effects and techniques, Decorative Gilding is far and away one of the best. Particularly useful (and unusual) are two formatting
layouts used by this author. The first is the inclusion of "Pitfalls", text boxes which include common problems in applying the technique described. The second is the identical application of the particular finish on different kinds/colors of backgrounds. From my own experience, a gilding technique will have a very different appearance, depending on the background color used, from item to item. The photography is excellent, the text clear and concise. A must for any serious artist's library!

In 1934, Oregon's newly-elected governor was a conservative anti-New Deal Democrat in a party dominated by President Roosevelt and his reformers. Here was a volitile combination certain to involve Charles Henry Martin in major political controversy. Governor Martin quickly turned his formidable talents to the destruction of labor unions and reformers in Northwest industries. He formed a secret Red Squad within the Oregon State Police bureaucracy, which operated up and down the West Coast. In addition to spying and using disruptive tactics, the Red Squad was linked to the framing and conviction of union activists in California.

Martin earlier had served two terms as a U.S. Representative. Contemporaries, including his political enemy Richard Neuberger, gave Martin considerable credit for the authorization of Bonneville Dam when he lobbied FDR and congressional colleagues. Through Martin fought vigorously for the project, he also waged a struggle against the proponents of "public power," whom Martin believed wanted the dam's output "socialized." Martin concealed the fact that public electrical distribution could harm his regional stock and real estate holdings. After political defeat in 1938, Martin blamed much of his troubles on the National Labor Relations Board, accused FDR of being a Communist and Fascist, and counseled appeasement with Hitler.

The author also explores Martin's equally intriguing military career (1887-1927). A graduate of West Point, Martin was at center stage in a number of remarkable events including chasing elements of Coxey's Army, the Philippines acquisition, entering China's Forbidden City during the Boxer Rebellion, commanding the all-black 92nd Division immediately after World War I, and perpetuating the Army's discriminatory policies of the 1920s.
